Barely.  Thank you.

Will the UKA have enough kickass American F16’s to make a difference?  Will they be able to get to where they can do direct ground support (hunt tanks and such)?

Likely not in the short run. But the initial goal is to eliminate the long range ground to air missiles, Russian airfields before they can go to ground attack mode.

That’s what the US did in the first gulf war. Once the skies are clear, you can do whatever the fuck you want.

Some not-so-great news in the east this week is that Ukraine unfortunately lost a town, Marinka, which is very close to the city of Donetsk. It's not a strategic place and was likely a pyrrhic victory for the Russians with a large loss of personnel. But, still, their willingness to throw meat into the grinder is working for now. Like someone said above, it's their only means for any kind of success.

A  day after Russia said it had taken complete control of Marinka, Gen. Valery Zaluzhny, Ukraine’s top military commander, spoke in sober terms about the fight, comparing it to the scorched-earth battle for Bakhmut, the eastern city that fell to Russia in May. Like Bakhmut, Marinka held limited strategic value, but is now a trophy in ruins for Moscow.

“The situation is exactly the same as it was in Bakhmut,” General Zaluzhny said at a news conference. “Street by street, block by block, and our soldiers were being targeted. And the result is what it is.”

Ukraine’s forces, he said, have retreated to the outskirts of the city and set up some positions behind it, indicating that the cost of staying and fighting was too high. Every inch of Ukrainian land is vital, General Zaluzhny said, but “the lives of our fighters are more important to us.”

*****

The battle for Marinka illustrated a defining feature of Russia’s invasion, one that analysts say gives Moscow’s forces a big advantage: Its willingness to send wave after wave of troops into fierce assaults, accepting a staggering number of casualties but counting on superior numbers in soldiers and ammunition to wear down the enemy.

It is the same approach Russia has taken in the nearby city of Avdiivka, where it has been attacking for months in the face of fierce Ukrainian resistance. The Russian assaults come as Ukraine is encountering dwindling support from Western allies.

A suburb of Donetsk, Marinka once had a population of 10,000 and streets lined with schools, shops and even a museum. Today no civilians are left and the place has been reduced to rubble.

“Ukrainian forces held Marinka for almost two years as the Russians annihilated it street by street, and then house by house,” General Zaluzhny said on Tuesday.

Geolocated footage shows that Russian forces attacked Ukrainian positions over months of battle. Then on Monday, Russia said it had seized full control of the town.

The capture of Marinka could allow Russian forces to turn their sights to the nearby towns of Kurakove, Vuhledar and Pokrovsk, bringing them closer to achieving Russia’s goal of capturing the entire Donbas region. General Zaluzhny said Ukrainian troops had “prepared a defensive line outside” Marinka, suggesting that his military would try to thwart Russia’s efforts to advance farther.

Announced today.

Antony J. Blinken, Secretary of State

The United States is announcing the year’s final package of weapons and equipment for Ukraine.  Our assistance has been critical to supporting our Ukrainian partners as they defend their country and their freedom against Russia’s aggression.

This package provides up to $250 million of arms and equipment under previously directed drawdowns for Ukraine.  Capabilities provided in today’s package include air defense munitions, other air defense system components, additional ammunition for high mobility artillery rocket systems, 155mm and 105mm artillery ammunition, anti-armor munitions, and over 15 million rounds of ammunition.

A coalition of more than 50 countries continues to provide critical support for Ukraine’s forces.  It is imperative that Congress act swiftly, as soon as possible, to advance our national security interests by helping Ukraine defend itself and secure its future.

Another war crime.

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russian occupation authorities vastly and deliberately undercounted the dead in one of the most devastating chapters of the 22-month war in Ukraine — the flooding that followed the catastrophic explosion that destroyed the Kakhovka Dam in the southern Kherson region.

The AP’s reporting focused on Oleshky, one town in the vast area flooded by the dam. Health workers and others who were in Oleshky told The Associated Press that Russian authorities hid the true number of dead by taking control of the issuance of death certificates, immediately removing bodies not claimed by family, and preventing local health workers and volunteers from dealing with the dead, threatening them when they defied orders. Still afraid, many Oleshky residents and health workers declined to speak, fearing reprisal. The AP’s investigation is based on the accounts of those who did, most of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity or on condition only their first names be used, fearing reprisal from Russia on family members still in occupied territory.

Here are the key takeaways from the investigation:

HUNDREDS DEAD

Lots of chatter about her, but Putin isn’t letting her run for President so it’s a moot point

https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/top-russian-court-backs-move-bar-anti-war-politician-running-against-putin-2023-12-27/#:~:text=MOSCOW%2C Dec 27 (Reuters),be candidate%2C said on Wednesday.

Quote

Russia's Supreme Court has upheld a decision to bar a former TV journalist who opposes the war in Ukraine from taking part in a presidential election in March, Yekaterina Duntsova, the would-be candidate, said on Wednesday.

Members of the central electoral commission voted unanimously to reject the candidacy of Duntsova, citing "numerous violations" in the papers she had submitted in support of her bid.

She maybe unknown, but if Putin wasn’t threatened, he’d allow her to run.

It was also interesting reading about the military wives and moms who had a grassroots movement opposing the war. Combating some of the unhappiness with the war is probably best done at a time where Ukraine had not blown up your large landing craft and ammo/missiles.  Putin looks weak. That is the real sin, not grinding meat.

The average Russian sees people not coming home from the war, the price of eggs going up, inflation going up, and Ukraine wrecking their valuable shit in a way they would not have believed possible at the start of the SMO.  Look, I’m not saying this is a Battleship Potemkin moment, I’m just saying that it is difficult to see the cracks occurring in a nation where cracks are not allowed to be seen.

Once again, rather than launch dozens or even hundreds of missiles against military targets, which might help Russian troops on the battlefield, Putin wants to terrorize Ukrainian civilians by hitting apartment buildings, shopping malls, and hospitals, because if he can’t have them, nobody can.

Plus, he’s probably pissed about the Russian ship full of goodies blowing up.

12 dead per BBC.

Ukraine attacked with 158 missiles and drones, says military

Ukraine's military says that, according to preliminary results, Russia used 158 means of air attack in its "massive military attack" on Ukraine.

The commander-in-chief of Ukraine's armed forces, Valerii Zaluzhnyi, says Russia used the more "traditional" method of deploying Iranian-made Shahed drones first.

This was followed by the use of at least 55 cruise missiles, 14 ballistic missiles, five aeroballistic missiles and a number of anti-radar missiles.

Zaluzhnyi says Ukraine downed 27 of the 36 drones launched from Russia, as well as 87 missiles.

It's just gone 11:00 in Kyiv, here are the latest numbers of dead and wounded from across Ukraine:

  • In Kyiv two have been killed and 18 others injured
  • One person is dead in Lviv and nine others are wounded
  • Five are dead in Dnipro after a strike on a shopping centre, 15 others are injured
  • In the port city of Odesa two are dead and at least 15 others injured
  • One person has been killed after shelling in Kharkiv which has injured at least nine others
  • In Zaporizhzhia one person has been killed after attacks on infrastructure, and 10 were injured

It's a sign of desperation by Putin.  He can't win militarily at this point, and as you said, he doesn't even see the point of attacking military targets.  What a creep and a loser.  The real truth about Russia and Russian culture is that they are just a bunch of losers.

And it might work.  Dead babies on TV in the west will beg the question, "Can Ukraine win?"  Not unlike the Tet Offensive.

Several of the missiles that got through were Kh-22s, which was developed as an anti-ship missile.  They’re inaccurate but pack a wallop and blow up all the shit around them.  AFU has not shot one down yet.

Worth tracking for us because it’s a weapon that was designed exactly against us.

I think we will see more infrastructure strikes, but my gut is that this was retaliation for the losses of jets and the Feodosia attack.

Is the reason the Kh-22 so hard to intercept because it's such a low flyer?

Given how little we’ve actually given Ukraine, one would think it would have the opposite effect… then again, today we live in the upside down where almost half the US unknowingly parrots Putin’s propaganda…
