Good question.  Probably 90+% of the time, I don't.  But, when I have had internet or power problems that have knocked out my internet, cell phone hotspot is my backup to keep work flowing.

In the big scheme of things, not being to fwd/ send pics without timing out isn't the end of the world (android phone, so, most are sms/ mms to iphones, which I am assuming are going over the cell net and not wifi), but, is more of an annoyance.   But, I did notice that I and guests were randomly missing calls on the VZW network, unless we had VoLTE enabled over wifi.

Does anyone have any recommendations for apps that block spam texts? Ideally, I'd like to somehow continue using the Verizon Message+ app just because it's familiar (and I'm just generally not crazy about the idea of opening up my contacts and messages to some random Chinese spyware or whatever), but I am fucking fed up that their shithead developers would rather figure out how to use their app to send gift cards to Applebee's rather than how to incorporate a feature that allows us to simply mute text notifications from unknown numbers.

I have always been very careful with giving out my cell number (we still have a landline so we can avoid giving out our cell numbers...) but for the past few months, I have been getting absolutely bombarded by Trumpy bullshit scammers and "fundraisers."

I use the "report spam" feature, which (seemingly) does nothing meaningful, and I forward each one to the FCC's spam report number (7726) which also doesn't do anything, at least with respect to the ongoing nuisance. I add each number to my contacts and then block it, but these assholes have so many rotating numbers (or they're just straight up spoofed) that it's meaningless.

If I ever find the motherfuckers behind 22-now.com I am going to cut off their faces and feel them to rats.

Spoiler

I don't have an app for you but I will say my pixel does a pretty good job of catching and filtering spam messages on its own.

I 2nd this... does well will spam call as well. They definitely have harnessed the "crowd" sourced spam blocking.

AT&T seems to do a good job of blocking spam texts and call. I didn't realize it until I logged into my account and found the tab that showed the number of calls and messages blocked. It was quite a lot.

So I'm reading the new "RCS" text protocols coming with iOS 18 still show a green bubble when an Android user is in your group?  Is that the case?

Yes. No change in color. But the media quality should be much better. So no more pixelated videos, but still very much the intentional stigma of green bubbles on your messages when texting non Apple devices.

Heck.  I'm running my personal phone as my work phone, which is not permitted by our company.  (Company phones are Apple.) I can get by so long as my bobbles are blue.  Green bubbles will draw attention and get me fired.

Also, Chase has a Visible offer for 30% off wireless plans, but Chase gave me $30 off the whole order, so it came out under $200 for a new Pixel 9a and 2 months of Visible service.

This is so weird.  On my Pixel, I can make the text bubbles whatever color I choose.  :)

Are you serious?  Tell me more.

Does it show up to the other guy the same as an iPhone?  Can you edit texts that have been sent?

No.  You can just assign text bubble colors on your end.  And so far, we cannot edit texts or respond to specific texts in a group chat.

I did have the distinct pleasure the other day in telling a friend who was bitching about the quality of the video that he sent the group that if his iphone could run IOS 18, he now was allowed to send good videos. Alas, he had to admit that his iphone was too old to run IOS18.

iPhone moving to RCS Messaging has helped a lot

Yes!  Sometimes have issues from group chats w/ multiple iphones breaking, but, it's great to finally be able to send full rez vids/ pics.

I've liked it so far from an appearance upgrade. And some camera tweaks but I haven't dug into it too deeply.

Only complaint is that it's caused a glitch to my Contacts list where Recently Added #s appear first & I have to scroll to get to my Favorites.

I like it so far.  My podcasts are now running in notifications and I can pull them up to ff through commercials without unlocking the phone or getting out of Waze.

I’ve always stayed with android because of the Poweramp music player and the EQ feature. When I listen to music on my wife’s iPhone, it sounds like crap. I’ve also never really liked the streaming services because the sound quality is generally ass as compared to playing stored music via Poweramp. Well, I just realized you can run streaming music through the Poweramp EQ amp which greatly improves the sound quality. I already subscribe to YouTube Premium which includes YouTube music which is pretty good imo.  I can’t believe it took me this long to discover the Poweramp EQ app.

Welp, I got four good years out of my Pixel 5, but the battery is self-destructing and pushing the screen off the body. Pixel 9 on the way. Hopefully, it gets here before the 5 explodes in my hand

What's a good texting app besides Google Messages?

The insertion of those dumb little arrows a week ago (as if the inconvenience of a long-tap to forward something was worth cutting the functional display width of your text string by 15-20%) was annoying as shit, but now the fucking camera opens up every time you want to send an image - absolutely insanely stupid, and a complete encroachment of privacy.

I've turned off camera permissions, but one more equally idiotic "improvement" and I'm switching to something else.

I like the idea of Signal, but am a little gunshy about its compatibility with other texting apps and operating systems.

I use Textra- lot of customization. There may be others with more bells and whistles, but I've got it dialed in the way I want it and I don't have to think much about it.

I had to check which text app I was using - Google Messages.  No arrows that I have noticed.  Went to settings and saw a button to turn off expressive animations, which I did.  I wish there was a setting that would give a small shock to people who send me emojis.  Otherwise, no issues here.
