I think many people like Biden and they're glad that he's the candidate. Yes, some Dems wanted Bernie but the reason Bernie isn't the candidate is that the majority of the party base didn't want Bernie, they wanted Biden.

Personally I can't think of another eligible Democrat that I would rather vote for at the moment. As President I think he will preside over a relatively muted swing back to the Left. If Bernie, Pelosi and Schumer are given the keys without restraint, the resulting swing would be too much.

I was saying they like Biden I’m the sense he’s not Bernie- not that Bernie should have won.

I see zero if the excitement to vote for him as Obama or Bill Clinton.

I like Joe Biden.

He wasn’t my first choice, hell he wasn’t even my eighth choice. But I like him.

And the more Trumpkins and Bitter Bernie Bro’s lie about him and smear him, I like him even more.

Come November if everything keeps being horrible, I’ll probably be in love with him.

I will crawl through coronavirus covered shit and glass to cast my vote for him.

Sure

i don’t think he was anyone’s first choice but by South Caroline he was the guy to stop Bernie.

I expect everyone else feels the same way that’s voting D which is why I expect a skull fucking in November.

@Ghost of LL articulated a good point about how Americans view social issues in general. I'd add, as an outside observer at least, there used to appear to be a difference between northern Republicans, who were what you'd think of as establishment types not particularly concerned with social issues; mountain west Republicans, who were really more libertarians; and secsecsec Republicans... Well, they've been religious fundamentalists and/or maga-esque the whole time, and yes, they were racists as Democrats before they flipped, before that gets brought up as if it's not totally irrelevant.

That's gone now. The party is Trump. There is no diversity of thought in the GOP anymore. There is only maga.

I get so tired of this shit. I followed you right up to that 2nd to last sentence. I don't have the mental energy to go into why it is at best a disingenuous statement, but likely an outright perpetuated falsehood. Maybe someone else will do it for me.

i don't know if this is the answer you're really looking for, but i don't think it's about "bernie's a socialist!" it's more about whether that line of attack would be useful in the propaganda machine that could get trump reelected.  i know plenty of people that wanted bernie but were getting increasingly nervous about the line of attack and what the campaigns would look like (there's a reason trump was so desperate to run against the "crazy radical socialist!!")  those same folks weren't at all nervous about whether the country could handle someone like bernie being in charge and what "socialism" really means.

never underestimate the general stupidity of the average american.  when trump was about to be impeached, over half of america thought "impeached" meant "removed from office".  i would bet the majority of people who are scared of "socialists!" have no fucking idea what any of it means or how it would benefit their daily lives.

Not on the ballot but...

Is Murkowski technically an independent who caucuses with Republicans?  Or has she changed back to a Republican?

My memory is that the last time she was elected, she lost the Republican primary and ran (and won) as an independent write-in candidate.  Though that may have been more than her last time running (and she's been reelected as a Republican since).

In any event, one wonders if she wouldn't be a possible flip if the Dems gain control of the Senate in November.

Interesting, I haven't paid much attention to KS but the generally accepted stance is that the Democrat only has a chance if Kobach is the nominee. Trump was up 52-40 on Biden in the same poll so I have to thank that's true, but an interesting poll none the less.

I'm not sure what to make of that.  I will say that the state GOP still has that Brownback stench on it.  But I don't think that really explains this poll.

This poll shows a bigger divergence between a presidential race and a Senate race than you really ever see in modern American politics.  And it doesn't appear to be limited to Kobach.  Maybe we have a resident Kansan who can shed some light.

Bollier is a former Republican in the state house and senate. Switched parties in ‘18 after she was “kicked out” of the party

Until 2016, I was a lifelong Republican. In 2016, I couldn’t vote for either Trump or Clinton and so I threw away my vote on Gary Johnson. All of my concerns about a Trump Presidency have been realized and I’ve been extremely embarrassed by the Senate Republicans who enable his madness. In 2018, I voted for Beto and Lizzie Fletcher in Houston but stuck with several other Republicans (Abbott and Judge Emmett). After the mishandling of Covid-19 and the protests, I will simplify my vote and vote straight D. I’ve also decided I want to see the D’s in charge of the Federal Gov’t for the next several years. In that regard, I am going to throw dollars at promising D Senate candidates.

As of now, I have Kelly, Hickenlooper, Gideon, Jones, Cunningham on my list. Who else should be on the list (Bollier from Kansas)?

I will also donate to Hegar or West depending on who wins the primary.

I guess I’m a George Will Republican. They need to be punished for abandoning their responsibility to the Republic.

Welcome (back? I see the legacy member tag) to the board.

I'd say Hickenlooper doesn't need the money. Colorado's a stone cold lock. Bullock in MT may be a good investment. Maybe Mark Kelly in AZ if that race tightens at all, though it looks good for Democrats right now. I forget the name of the Democratic candidate in Iowa, but if more polling comes out showing that as a close race that could also be a good investment. I'd never discourage donating to McConnell's opponent even if that's fruitless. In general I'd encourage you to contribute locally or in downballot statewide races. Those high profile senate races are going to get a ton of money from both sides. Your dollar goes a lot further downballot.

I actually have a question for you given the background info you shared. It's a little forward so I am sorry if it comes off in a bad way or anything like that. I don't mean it that way, I am just pretty curious about how voters with a background like yours are going to behave going forward:

It's 2024. Democrats have controlled the federal government for four years. They haven't even tried to pass their big progressive items like Medicare For All or Green New Deal, but taxes have modestly increased on upper middle class households and above (let's call this $250k+ for a married couple) as well as corporations, and things look a lot like the Obama era in terms of federal regulatory policy on civil rights, the environment, etc. Military spending is also back down to Obama-era levels. Democrats tried to solve immigration but that was a shitshow because that's what they do. The economy is okay but there's still a tangible COVID hangover, not unlike the national situation in 2012. Judicial appointments obviously lean liberal but they are at least objectively qualified now. RBG and Breyer have retired and been replaced so SCOTUS is not a flashpoint - though a conservative is probably next to go just due to the way the numbers and ages break down. In general the government has its up and down moments, but is no longer a total fucking embarrassment and we generally act like a first world country.

108 year old President Biden is not running for reelection. Some young-ish progressive caught fire in the primary and is the nominee. The White House is going to push hard on GND and MFA if Democrats win. They'll probably pass before the 2026 midterms if the Democrats control the federal government in January 2025. The GOP is running a wholesome Mitt Romney type (maybe he's too old in 2024 but think in this mold) - charismatic, not outwardly racist, etc. Really hammering economic issues, fiscal discipline, and immigration reform, but without the on the nose racism. Texas is kinda sorta maybe in play based on polls. Democrats aren't really in danger of losing the House, but the Senate is hotly contested. Ted Cruz is up for reelection and he is running against a more moderate Texas Democrat - let's say Lizzie Fletcher since you mentioned her. Cruz is trying to project the principled, intellectual conservative persona from the pre-Trump era.

Who are you voting for in the presidential and senate elections? Again, I don't mean to put you on the spot. Feel free to tell me to fuck off. I am just really curious on how moderates will react if/when Democrats get control.

Georgia senate candidates.  Take the money you would have spent on Kelly and Hickenlooper and give it to them.

This former Republican will never vote for a single Republican ever again unless they can beyond a shadow of a doubt prove that they were a never trumper. Any motherfucker that ever supported him politically either before, during or after he was president has no business anywhere near power. They’ve shown they do not have the critical thinking skills or brain power to handle the reins.

That being said, it will be a very tough sell even for the never trumper Republicans.

Republicans first turned me into a Libertarian and now they’ve turned me into a fucking yellow dog Democrat. I still can’t believe it.

As you described, it sounds like 2020-2024 have gone as I’ve hoped. Under Democratic control, I’m hoping for our government to function again and pass simple things that a strong majority of Americans agree on: universal background checks for gun sales, allowing Medicare to negotiate with pharma companies to lower drug prices, reduce military spending to reasonable levels, smart criminal justice reform, a return to American leadership in global organizations and some unwinding of the Trump tax cuts which went to far.

If a truly progressive candidate wins the Presidential primary, that’s going to be a tough sell. During this primary season, I decided I would vote for Bernie because he would be running against Trump. However, I would have definitely split my ballot at that point and Cornyn would have received my  disgusted vote for Senate. In your scenario, I probably split my ballot and vote for the hopefully non-racist Republican Presidential candidate and the Democratic moderate for Senate. I would be hoping for split Government and hoping for the 2 parties to find a way to work in a bipartisan way to solve problems.

Thanks for sharing - I appreciate the insight. Sorry again if I came off overly forward. Interrogation is over.

Similar to my path.  From 1984-2000, I voted R for POTUS and Congress, every damned time.  After learning about (and being suckered in by) the lies leading up to the Iraq invasion, I voted third party from 2004-2016.  In 2018, I voted straight D and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

I’ll answer this since his profile is more or less my own.

im not voting for a republican again in any way shape or form until this old guard that let the amoral piece of shit in office wipe his ass with any notion of conservative principles and the constitution, and gleefully let the party get hijacked are dead. I dare say I might not vote for a R again in my lifetime. Maybe if another party springs up and I’m angry at the Democrats for whatever reason. At the end of the day, I’m now a democrat because at least if they’re inept motherfuckers, on the surface they at least want all people to have some modicum of dignity.

Interesting. There's clearly a split in the ranks of the Trump-era GOP refugees. I've seen multiple posters on here say they'll never vote R again. I've seen multiple say a Rubio type at the top of the ticket would be enough to go back. No way to know what percentage fall on each side, which is really what I'm curious about for the purpose of discussing future election cycles.

That's very odd and really unusual these days, as Senate races have become very aligned with presidential/nationalized political partisanship. I'm sure there is some truth to the simple fact that Kelly is an impressive candidate and running ahead of Biden because McSally's a branded loser. But 13 percent of voters splitting ballots, especially 13 percent of Trump voters, who you'd think are the most married to the GOP at this point... That seems off.

I think it’s closer than that. I think James runs ahead of Trump, but Trump is so toxic that probably sinks his chance to win.

My guess is that if James won the seat he would end up being a star in the GOP, but looks like he’s fixing to (probably) be a two time loser.  That’s a tough seat for the GOP ever to win and he’s ran in about the two worst elections in a decade now. Timing can be really really really important. He’s got bad timing it looks like.

Apologies in advance. I can’t link twitter, but Republican incumbent Steve Daines has already challenged the democratic challenger Steve Bullock to 4 debates in the Montana senate race.

how often do we see incumbents so eager to debate?  Ones that are in trouble I’m thinking.

NC needs to not be close.  They tend to cheat a bit.
Democrats control the governership and therefore the board of elections, as well as NC supreme court. I'm sure local GOP leadership will cheat where it can, but the days of the NC GOP outright rigging ejections are gone. McCrory fucked the GOP there way more than anyone realizes.
