Spoiler

Haynes King Heisman odds skyrocket following being named A&M starter

Haynes King was officially named Texas A&M’s starting quarterback on Saturday, and it’s safe to say that the oddsmakers have taken notice. Prior to the announcement, King was +10,000 to win the Heisman trophy, according to DraftKings Sportsbook. That was good for the 40th-best odds in the country, and was worse odds than his teammate Max Johnson (23rd-best at +7000).

Fast forward to today, and King has vaulted up to +5500 odds, which is tied for the 17th-best odds alongside South Carolina QB (and Oklahoma transfer) Spencer Rattler. LSU transfer Johnson’s odds plummeted down to +15,000, while five-star true freshman Conner Weigman’s odds strangely remain unchanged at +12,000.

I'd love to see the people placing actual money on Haynes King winning the Heisman.

I really enjoyed BON back in the mid to late 2000s, when Peter Bean ran it. Wescott is unbearable, though.

I get some of the old $9.95er stuff confused like everyone else so maybe I am getting this wrong again, but isn’t Bean the one who melted down in like truly legendary ways? I feel like one of the early $9.95ers was giving guys blowjobs for money on the side and then had like a Dog Day Afternoon level hostage situation in downtown Austin or something. Did that happen? Was that him? What else is behind the story if either of the first two questions is answered with “yes”?

I don't recall Peter being named in that sort of thing. Peter was in law school out-of-state in the 2005-2010 timeframe and worked for Jackson Walker in Austin after he graduated, iirc. So he made it through the Bar's character & fitness review and got hired by a reputable firm. (Unlikely that he had hostages and blow jobs on his record.)

There was a rumor floating around about him back then, but I never put much credence in it. Sounded like someone had an axe to grind, but I don't actually know.  But he is a tax and erisa attorney in good standing.

Well scratch him off the list, then. I swear I remember @Burt Macklin or @texifornia or someone else voluminous and following recruiting that had a story on it. Maybe it was the fatkid before he was murdered by latent racism.

Chip's only real value was that he was very tied in at the admin level during Dodds/Patterson/Perrin. That was super useful during realignment one and the subsequent Steve Patterson shit show. Since CDC came in, he is clearly on the outside so now he mainly just sits around and snipes at people for clicks and writes hit pieces for other teams. He is Ketchum lite.

You're not wrong. It was 100% peter bean that was rumored to being cracked out as fucked and handing out BJs for money in Austin parking garages. I think the hostage thing was somehow related to him working in the same building or office that the FBI raided for that real estate guy, but I could be  completely wrong about that one. But him being on crack and handing out BJs was absolutely a rumor at the time. I feel like there was actually some evidence to back it up.

Not exactly big business here.

Orangebloods might be the worst rag on the planet and is a disgrace to the program. AD should have revoked access for OB and the Statesman years ago.

Coach V: Last night's Texas win over ULM was fun

Spoiler

By Coach Venable: It’s always fun to watch the Texas Longhorns make plays regardless of opponent. It was very obvious that some of our returning veterans have definitely improved over an eight month camp to change our way of living and competing. We still have some that haven’t thrown caution to the wind unfortunately and they should be passed up in short fashion if that continues. We made too many mistakes for sure but when you make those errors busting your butt they don’t seem to hurt the team as bad. Here is how this pair of eyes saw some of our first contest.

I think the most impressive aspects of our defensive effort was split between how well we ran to the ball and our tackling program wide. The best part of both strengths was they were accomplished as a team. We played fundamentally sound and basically limited our mistakes to minor errors—we seldom took the wrong avenue leading to major busts. This was definitely an improvement over last season. Missed tackles became quick opportunities for teammates to apologize for your miscue.

We had several defenders raise their performance from last season in my opinion. That’s a step in the right direction. Everyone saw Barryn Sorrell (88) make his claim on the strongside edge position. He distributed more of the promise he gave small hints of last fall. I saw a completely different Anthony Cook (11) and I gave him a standing ovation performing like a bullet safety. Moro Ojomo (98) made plays inside and outside. Jaylan Ford (41) was extremely active in coverage but was a minor disappointment against the ground game. DeMarvion Overshown (0) is a much better player when given a specific assignment—eliminate having him read keys and assign him sic’em every down.

Jamier Johnson (31) will play major snaps this fall. Jaylon Guilbeau (13) is fun to watch. Ovie Oghoufo (18) is not fun to watch. Ethan Burke (91) is fun to watch. T’Vondre Sweat (93) is fun half the time and not the other half. Vernon Broughton (45) made three terrific plays but needs lower body strength bad. D’Shawn Jamison (5) had a big game but did anybody see him as a punt blocker making a huge play? Ryan Watts (6) is a big corner that will secure the weak side. If Jerrin Thompson (28) had another 15 pounds he would be dangerous. He runs the pursuit angle very fast but lacks a puncher’s chance at a knockout.

The biggest improvement on defense might have been Pete Kwiatkowski’s gameplan. I’ll leave it to others to describe what his strategy was but I was impressed that he didn’t ask players to win assignments they weren’t as comfortable fulfilling. Of course, the difference in quality opposition might make a bigger difference than we need but I saw players making the correct decisions all over the field last night. That’s a huge start in playing well. We ran extremely well (and smart) to the ball. We tackled very well most of the time. It will interesting to see how well we tee it up with the big boys this week.

Bijan Robinson (5) is just different. Roschon Johnson (2) is a leader and a warrior. Quinn Ewers (3) is the moxie talent that will take your whisky and have his way with your women while you wonder how this rube finished high school. Xavier Worthy (8) is scary good but missed two potential td’s (posts) where he fade adjusted while QE laid it out there for him to run under. Ja’Tavion Sanders (0) is a five star TE that will make good defenses assign an extra defender to underneath threats, mainly him. Casey Cain (88) made sure both 88’s made the honor roll with a nasty move to put a 50 yarder on the board.

The OL had a very average night with some super goods and some why did I do that’s mixed in. Hayden Conner (76) and Kelvin Banks (78) executed several excellent “twists” switches and had just a few bad efforts. Jake Majors (65) had a solid night—good snaps and correct calls are half the battle and Jake carries his own weight in that department. You gotta love Cole Hutson (54) at RG. Early enrollee that proved he belonged and now everybody takes him for granted. He’s a stud warrior is all he is.

Christian Jones (70) is still struggling with pass pro at RT. We didn’t get to see enough of DJ Campbell (52), Cam Williams (56), Malik Agbo (67), Neto Umeozulu (72), or Connor Robertson (62) to see exactly how close they are to being productive backups. We know where Andrej Karic (69/92) and Logan Parr (71) fit in the scheme of things but it appears Karic needs to stay alert because these young guys are definitely knicked up probabilities.

One bad snap, hold, or kick on a field goal ruined a good night on special teams. I was impressed with our coverage units. We are definitely stressing special teams more under this staff.

Well, that bunch of ragknots (Alabama) comes into our house next week. I have a hunch everybody will undergo an oil check on both sides. I never went into a game thinking we had zero chance of winning and I’m not about to start now. Nobody said it is going to be easy but one way or the other it will be settled on the field and not before the kickoff. Let’s have fun again this week.

You're not wrong on their access, but I'd stop short of it not being "big business." I have no idea what their membership numbers are these days, but they used to be the biggest UT website on the internet. If their subscriber base is 15k people, that's 150k of revenue...a month. That's 1.8 million a year. You might not call that Big Business, but thats a very comfortable living for Fat Ketch. Who, the last time I saw him over a decade ago when he was out trying to score drunk college chicks, he was driving a 120k mercedes. I know because he wouldn't stop talking about it to said 22 year old girls. I doubt the years since have gone so sideways as to invert the power of compound interest.

Fair enough, can’t argue with what connotes big business. Certainly profitable for those involved.

From a media perspective, we need our admin to grow a set and make some hard decisions.

While none of this is wrong, I have zero doubt that OB has lost substantial numbers from its subscriber base. I know IT is booming and that growth is very unlikely to be coming from purely organic subs. A ton of the new subs will inherently be cannibalizing people from other sites.

The second thing to consider is that it is in no way believable that a man who can't keep up with his income tax obligations is somehow nonetheless investing wisely and building a large nest egg. Let's think about the financials for a minute.

10,000 subs * $9.95/mo = $1.2M annually. That has to be split 50/50 with Rivals.

Assume $25K/mo in advertising = $300k. That can be kept.

Payroll is how many folks? Suchomel and Anwar? I haven't been over there in probably 15 years so I don't know who else is on the books. Assume 4 heads at $30k/year each, so $120K. Burden * 1.2 = $144K/yr.

Assume other SG&A is another $25K/month (it's probably higher but Rivals offsets some of the expenses), so you're at $300K/yr.

So you go $1.2M - $600K + $300K - $144K - $300K = $456K. Ketchum's take-home is probably roughly $450K with key variables moving that number up or down being sub count, payroll, and advertising revenue.

Then you have the guy's personal budget:

Food: $18K/mo.

Mortgage: $3K/mo.

Utilities & Services: $750/mo.

Legal: $5k retainer/mo.

Since the guy is immobile and doesn't have a vehicle that he could fit into, I assume he's $0 on travel and auto. I doubt he's bought clothes in decades.

You're looking at almost $27K/mo in personal expenses against a pre-tax salary of $450K/yr. Take home on that is about $32k/mo. So, if he has a really good month and doesn't splurge on suing people or ordering the right side of the menu at Perry's Steakhouse in The Woodlands more than 4 times a week, his total savings is $5k. That's $60k/year. Compound that shit all you want, I wouldn't call the dude set for life unless he goes on a diet or decides to stop suing multiple entities at any given moment in time.

When you say advertising, do you mean promos and other fee waivers? Have trouble getting to $300k

I didn't spend a lot of time thinking about it, but if a site with that kind of traffic and customer loyalty isn't raking in $25K/mo at a minimum in partnerships/sponsorships/referrals/banner ads/etc. then it is the most poorly run shithole on the Internet. Frankly, he could be raking $50K/mo pretty easily and he doesn't have to split that with the parent company.
