It should have been Gallo.  Bieber is the first in 20 years to win ASG MVP in his home park.  So why did they choose this year to pander to the home crowd and give it to one of the 7 AL pitchers to throw a shutout inning?

In the end though, who really cares about the ASG?

They took away Chief Wahoo, so they gave them an ASG MVP.

If it wasn't Gallo, the only other logical options were Aroldis and Brantley.

Other than just the obvious “he’s the home town guy, let’s make the home town happy” I don’t understand the logic in giving it to Bieber instead of Chapman. If you don’t want to give it to Gallo or Brantley, fine. But Chapman struck out the side on fewer pitches than Bieber, while doing it in a higher leverage situation.

My wife suggested that rule years ago.

She said, "We should you only be able to run when the catcher can't catch it on a third strike?  Why shouldn't you be able to run anytime the pitcher throws it to the backstop?"

I was like, "Uhhhh... I don't have a good answer for that."

Jim Bouton died today.  If you read Ball Four now, you'll wonder what the big deal was, but that was literally the first book (even first stories) that anyone ever read about how players really behaved.  Before Ball Four, the media didn't report the truth; they created whitewashed fantasies to print.

"You see, you spend a good piece of your life gripping a baseball, and in the end it turns out that it was the other way around all the time."

What a fucking disaster.

Quote

The Angels announced today that infielder Zack Cozart will undergo an “arthroscopic debridement of his left shoulder.” He has been shifted to the 60-day injured list, making roster space for today’s earlier transactions.

It’s not clear at the moment just what the expectations are moving forward for Cozart, whose tenure in Los Angeles has been an unmitigated disaster. There is no indication at present whether he will attempt to return later this season, though there does not appear to be much cause for optimism at this point.

Cozart had already been out for about a month when he revealed that his attempt to return without surgery had stalled out. After a few more weeks of waiting, he’ll now go under the knife. His three-year, $38MM contract expires at the end of the 2020 campaign.

When they signed him, the Halos hoped that Cozart would team with Andrelton Simmons on the left side of the infield to form an outstanding defensive and solid offensive pairing. Instead, Cozart has struggled to stay on the field and performed miserably when he has been able to suit up. The 33-year-old owns a meager .190/.261/.296 batting line in his 360 plate appearances in Anaheim.

Mike Clevinger started the season off like an absolute ace, but then a back injury sidelined him for 2.5 months. He got absolutely crushed in his first two starts off the DL, but his last two outings he's been back in form. His numbers on the year, excluding the two bombed starts after 10 weeks off:

4 starts

21 IP

10 H

6 BB

37 K

1 ER

he'll need to start going a bit deeper into games, but he could be a huge boost for the Indians in the second half. also of note, Jose Ramirez has been playing like his old self again ever since his child was born. despite all of their struggles (including/especially Carrasco's cancer), don't sleep on the Indians in the second half.
