  1. Now that it’s over... Pete wasn’t ready to be President, but a giant fuck you to the Bernie crew for how personal and intense the attacks got against him.

  2. My wife bought quite a few 2L bottles of hand sanitizer from Sam’s about a year ago. I’ve secretly cursed her many, many times when these monstrosities have taken up space I needed for other items. I’m a big enough man to admit to y’all I was wrong, but smart enough not to admit it to her.

  3. Home again! Had a great week, VA folks were fantastic. There were I think 9 patients most of the time. People would come and go, folks getting discharged and new blood getting admitted. Mostly older guys like myself with varying degrees of sight loss. There were a couple of women too which surprised me a bit. I spent probably 7 or so hours working with the white cane over the 3 full days and learned a good bit about that aspect. Some of that was with a blindfold on and exploring one of the buildings on campus that was mostly devoid of people. Obviously I still have fear of what the future will be but after being around and observing those with no sight at all I think if it comes to that then I'll be able to cope. I left there optimistic about my situation which was not the case before arriving. Hope is a good thing. Keep trudging.

  4. What you and Somnio fail to understand is that not everyone that gets infected with this gets tested for it. So some people get infected and hardly get sick, never see a doctor, never get tested, etc. That would lower the actual mortality/hospitalization rate. I know it’s less fun to think that way, because doomsday is more exciting, but it helps to look at things with a grain of salt. I’d be shocked if this wasn’t being openly transmitted across the US for a month or longer at this point. Incubation of 2 weeks or shorter means we should already be seeing overwhelmed hospitals and people dead in the street according to you guys. The true hospitalization/mortality rate of this will likely never be known, same is true for Spanish flu. That could’ve been higher or lower than 2%.

  6. Look what our guitar player brought to practice today: 1953 ES-295 He played it through the Supro I posted in the amp thread a while back. Pure tone. Cleanest P-90s I’ve ever heard.

  17. Got after it with old girlfriend the second we got in the door. Pulling of clothes, grabbing, groping, tugging and pulling. She was all ready to rock after a black tie shindig and some champagne. We just couldn’t get after it fast enough. As I’m thrusting into her I notice her toes are curling up and as I de-thrust I notice her toes uncurl. After 2-3 minutes of this action, she says “deadshank, take my panty hose off, would you?”

  21. Don’t know about the rate, but this was interesting - WHO putting together some info on the limited access they had. This has the link to the PDF and Video of the press conference https://www.reddit.com/r/China_Flu/comments/fbt49e/the_who_sent_25_international_experts_to_china/ 5% of people who are diagnosed with Covid require artificial respiration. Another 15% need to breathe in highly concentrated oxygen - and not just for a few days. The duration from the beginning of the disease until recovery is 3 to 6 weeks on average for these severe and critical patients (compared to only 2 weeks for the mildly ill). The mass and duration of the treatments overburdened the existing health care system in Wuhan many times over. The province of Hubei, whose capital is Wuhan, had 65,596 infected persons so far. A total of 40,000 employees were sent to Hubei from other provinces to help fight the epidemic. 45 hospitals in Wuhan are caring for Covid patients, 6 of which are for patients in critical condition and 39 are caring for seriously ill patients and for infected people over the age of 65. Two makeshift hospitals with 2,600 beds were built within a short time. 80% of the infected have mild disease, ten temporary hospitals were set up in gymnasiums and exhibition halls for those. The vast majority of those infected sooner or later develop symptoms. Cases of people in whom the virus has been detected and who do not have symptoms at that time are rare - and most of them fall ill in the next few days. The most common symptoms are fever (88%) and dry cough (68%). Exhaustion (38%), expectoration of mucus when coughing (33%), shortness of breath (18%), sore throat (14%), headaches (14%), muscle aches (14%), chills (11%) are also common. Less frequent are nausea and vomiting (5%), stuffy nose (5%) and diarrhoea (4%). Running nose is not a symptom of Covid. An examination of 44,672 infected people in China showed a fatality rate of 3.4%. Fatality is strongly influenced by age, pre-existing conditions, gender, and especially the response of the health care system. All fatality figures reflect the state of affairs in China up to 17 February, and everything could be quite different in the future elsewhere. Healthcare system: 20% of infected people in China needed hospital treatment for weeks. China has hospital beds to treat 0.4% of the population at the same time - other developed countries have between 0.1% and 1.3% and most of these beds are already occupied with people who have other diseases. The most important thing is firstly to aggressively contain the spread of the virus in order to keep the number of seriously ill Covid patients low and secondly to increase the number of beds (including material and personnel) until there is enough for the seriously ill. China also tested various treatment methods for the unknown disease and the most successful ones were implemented nationwide. Thanks to this response, the fatality rate in China is now lower than a month ago. Pre-existing conditions: The fatality rate for those infected with pre-existing cardiovascular disease in China was 13.2%. It was 9.2% for those infected with high blood sugar levels (uncontrolled diabetes), 8.4% for high blood pressure, 8% for chronic respiratory diseases and 7.6% for cancer. Infected persons without a relevant previous illness died in 1.4% of cases. Whole lot more info from the report, including tables on ages, etc. at the link above.

  23. You’re missing the nuance. Black voters - especially black women - are connecting with Warren but they aren’t sure she can beat Trump. They’re putting pragmatism over connection and voting for Joe. Threatened communities don’t have the luxury to vote on connection or purity - they just want Trump gone. They’re also skittish about white people not getting behind a woman or a “crazy socialist” and giving Trump the victory. Most of y’all - middle to upper class white men - have the luxury to take a chance this election. Don’t dismiss the women and the blacks and the browns and the gays and the trans who make the calculation - “Candidate A may not be swinging for big structural change but I think he can win and then I will at least be able to quit worrying about my safety, being thrown in a cage, losing my right to marry, be deported, lose autonomy over by body etc. Just get us back to “normal” and then we’ll worry about big change.” Ridding this country of Trump is more important than anything else to a big chunk of voters the Democratic nominee will need to win in November.

  24. Liz really isn't doing poor in the context that she can't reach them. She can, and she has. I'm voting for her as did my parents. Black women are definitely on her side. If any candidate has spoken to Blacks the best, it's been Liz. The problem is people see the polls and are questioning a.) why aren't others seeing in Liz what Black people are seeing and 2.) can she beat trump. I also believe Bernie's coalition is just too much to overcome for Liz. I've said it before and I'll say it again--Black people want to beat trump. That (from everything I've seen over the last few months) is the top goal. The polls still show Biden is the person to do that, so there's your answer as to why most (not all) Blacks are on his side and not someone like Liz. Now Mayo Pete? He's doing poorly because he just doesn't make any damn sense when it comes to Black people and his plans. I expect him to end his race after Tuesday. Why the fuck hasn't Russian Tulsi gotten out yet?

  25. When there starts being news of local transmission and death in your community is when you’ll see most people start to get concerned and start preparing. Ironically, the rush for goods will result in more infections than otherwise. I’m glad I won’t be among them, even if most of what I bought winds up getting donated.

  29. for people just scanning the thread who went tl/dr on this post: This virus is spread in large droplets by coughing and sneezing. This means that the air will not infect you! BUT all the surfaces where these droplets land are infectious for about a week on average - everything that is associated with infected people will be contaminated and potentially infectious. The virus is on surfaces and you will not be infected unless your unprotected face is directly coughed or sneezed upon. This virus only has cell receptors for lung cells (it only infects your lungs) The only way for the virus to infect you is through your nose or mouth via your hands or an infected cough or sneeze onto or into your nose or mouth.

  33. Let me preface this with the fact that I've been married 16 years and I have three kids, so sex can be anything from wild monkey sex to a 5 min quickie. Depends on the situation and available time. My wife does a good job of keeping things fresh, but sometimes it's more of a pressure relief than a drawn-out event. Last week, Aunt Flo was in town, so my wife offered up a BJ. I gladly accepted. Just before beginning, she said, "do you think your mom still gives your dad head?" I'm usually not one to let things distract me, but I gotta admit, this got into my head. I powered through, though. Just took some serious mind shifting.

  34. I’m a big Bogle fan and have my major investments tied up at Vanguard in a balanced portfolio of 65/45 stocks to bonds. I have a 401k “play” account that has the hammer down and is 100% U.S. individual stocks (Seven total stocks that about once or twice a year I move some things around in). Times like this I like to visit bogleheads.org and read their forums. There are some old wise investors who post very good logical advice in those threads. For those panicking, I recommend going to the site for some sound logic. No, we don’t know what the hell is going to happen tomorrow, next month or the rest of the year. But trying to time when to get out and when to jump back in is personally not something I’m not interested in doing. Here is an excerpt from a post on the board I saw today: “Sure, it's possible that the market will crash 50% or more, and NEVER recover. That's possible... That's why I'm not 100% stocks... I've been 50/50 for years now (recently moved to 45/55 a few months ago because I was getting closer to retirement) But novice investors seem to think that a 50% crash is like the Titanic sinking, and must be avoided at all costs. The long-term average nominal return of 9%-10% from the stock market INCLUDES the crashes. Those average returns INCLUDE the 50% drops. Just riding the roller-coaster down and back up, in the past, still made you rich. There was no need to avoid the 50% crashes while saving for retirement. Sure, riding the roller-coaster is scary... But you know what's even more dangerous? Jumping off the roller-coaster mid-ride.” I know some posters on here feel like people can time things and everyone has different beliefs on how to make money in the market. I just wanted to pass this information along for those who might benefit from this perspective. And I do recommend bogleheads.org for early investors who are trying to figure out what to do with their money/savings/investments. Best of luck to everyone.
