  2. The middle hasn't gone anywhere and in fact is probably much bigger than it has ever been before. We just don't see or hear from "the middle" because they don't post 1M times a day on social media, aren't outraged by every fucking thing, and the biggest reason- they don't drive clicks, views, and ratings like the fringe on either side. Oh, and the "middle" are more worried about their family and dealing with everyday shit then they are about some Karen getting pissed she has to wear a mask at HEB, or someone that got their feelings hurt by someone that used the wrong fucking pronoun.

  5. So my hospital woes have been well documented by me here because this is my only real “safe space” I can vent anonymously because my other social media is relatively public and under my real name. This isn’t a big city and everyone knows where I work. Just got the daily update. We now currently have 48 CV-19 inpatients (they’ve stopped breaking out how many are in ICU and how many are “just” hospitalized), 32 PUIs, and EIGHTY ONE tests administered just today sitting in our lab to be processed. The PUIs are almost certainly positive cases, so doing the math, that’s 80 patients (already hospitalized + PUIs). We’re currently clipping along at a positive rate of 9.3%., so those 80 pending lab tests should result in approximately 10 positive cases. Taking us up to ~90 Covid patients. I won’t post specific population numbers for my county (don’t feel like courting a doxxing) but we are a Level III community hospital with ~260 beds. And 24 of those beds a L&D. So we could be looking at 38% of our non L&D beds occupied by CB-19 inpatients. I’ve felt a lot of emotions over the last few months. Today was the first time I felt truly frightened. Sorry if this is a rambling mess and full of typos. I’m exhausted and I don’t claim to be any good at math and shit but our situation is terrifying.

  6. I'm sorry, but ABSOLUTELY NOTHING is going to come of this. This administration has done uncountably many things that are both true, and handled in the most clumsy way imaginable. With exactly zero consequences. FOX/Rush will get their spin going, and this is not even going to move the needle one iota with his base.

  9. Regarding enthusiasm.... I absolutely care more about removing Trump than I do about elevating Biden. But my level of passion about removing Trump is higher than any enthusiasm I have had for any candidate ever. JFK could have come out of secret cryogenic freeze, with Lincoln as his running mate, and I’d still would care more about removing Trump from office. It’s not a knock on Biden that my main focus is getting rid of Trump. We are in a dangerous situation and that danger needs to end. Biden is the guy to do it. Cool.

  10. It wasn't even stupid. It was flat out criminal. The republicans decided passing a new tax code in 2017 that adds over 2 trillion to the deficit in 10 years for money directly going into their billionaire donor's pockets was ok. This year they decided it was not ok to add a few trillion to the deficit to save the lives and well-being of millions of Americans and save the economy during a pandemic. So they forced everything open and everyone back to work in the face of a debilitating virus. That's biblical level evil.

  16. Rep, of course. A thank you not actually for what you do, although that is deserved by you and everyone who keeps showing up in the battle zone, but for letting us see a little of what is going on. People like the yokel in the store can maintain their belief it is a hoax until confronted with a taste of reality. I harp on this, but I'll repeat it. We are being let down by the best news media for presenting the reality of this disease beyond statistics, charts, and talking heads. National TV news. Where is the video of the person in their 40s discharged in a wheel chair with lung damage? Where is video of a patient coding in ICU? Where are testimonials from actual survivors and survivors of the deceased? A non-jounalist might respond that it's difficult to report on this. Reporters have covered actual battlefields. They've been present at riots, revolutions, and hurricanes. If medical professionals can go to the ICU or ER, reporters can find a way to gear up, get releases from their subjects, and return with minimal risk. Where is the coverage? Where are the imbedded reporters? Why not set up a permanent camera or two in a hospital and edit the video to protect identities and privacy? This is a failure of initiative, imagination, and purpose of news reporting by the TV news media. They wait to repeat what the print journalists uncover and then just sit around talking about it. Persons on TV who call themselves journalists and don't go get stories should do some self analysis while they're sitting in the make-up chair. Are you vainly referring to yourself as a journalist? If you are one, you're lazy, incompetent, and seemingly hostile to actual news that is unpredictable and waiting for illumination. Your job wasn't supposed to be to explain the news to poor dumb me; you're supposed to find and publish it as free of analysis as possible. The republic is ill-served in many ways, my friends.

  18. I have a Carl Reiner story that I hold very dear to me. I figured I'd share it today, on the day of his passing, because I hope it will bring some other people some joy the way it does me. Growing up my dad and his twin brother fell in love with Sid Caeser's Your Show Of Shows. It is the show that made my dad fall in love with storytelling and comedy. They worshipped Caeser along with castmember/writer Carl Reiner. Caeser, Reiner, and the other writers on their show, including Mel Brooks, Neil Simon, Larry Gelbart, and Woody Allen, all made my dad and uncle want to be writers, which they both ended up being. Growing up my dad's choice of dinner on every birthday was Beef Stroganoff. Why did he eat Beef Stroganoff on every birthday for his whole life? Because of a joke on Your Show of Shows. When Charlton Heston was a guest on the show they did a cold war spy sketch where Reiner was told to go to a restaurant and “ask for Beef Stroganoff.” He sits down and the waitress comes over. Reiner says "I'm here for Beef Stroganoff." She leaves and a short while later Heston walks over to the table and asks Reiner “can I help you?” Reiner responds “I asked for Beef Stroganoff,” and Heston pauses and then in his deep voice deadpans “I am Beef Stroganoff.” The joke made my dad laugh his whole life. Around 20 years ago my dad had his yearly birthday call with his brother (they're twins). My dad mentioned having Beef Stroganoff and my uncle asked why he always had that on his birthday. Confused my dad just said “because of the sketch.” My uncle had no idea what he was talking about. It turns out he remembered the sketch clearly but was convinced Heston's name in it was “Sauerbraten” not “Beef Stroganoff.” They ended up arguing about this for years. My dad bought every DVD and VHS of Your Show of Shows he could find. He watched every clip online and every documentary, but there didn't seem to be any surviving tape of the sketch. Jump ahead 10 years and Carl Reiner writes a new book. He announces he will be signing and giving a talk in NY at the 92nd Street Y. My dad sees his chance. He buys tickets as fast as he can. My dad was desperate to ask him about the sketch in person. But knowing that he may not get the chance, he also wrote up a letter to hand to Reiner in case there was no time to ask. When it came time for the signing my dad waited in line and when he got in front of Reiner he told the story of how his whole life he'd loved the show, and the sketch, and Beef Stroganoff, but then he got in the fight with his brother. Carl listened. When he got to the part about how they couldn't remember whether it was Beef Stroganoff or Sauerbraten he asked Carl point blank- which was it? Carl Reiner stared at my dad, laughed, and simply said “That was a long time ago.” My dad thanked him anyway, got his book signed, and then decided to hand him the letter he'd written too, just because he had said some nice things in it about how much he appreciated Reiner's work over the years. Two months later. My dad is out for a bike ride. The phone rings. My mom answers. A man asks to speak to my father. She tells him that he's out. The man says he'll try back another time. She asks who it is and he says “Carl Reiner” and hangs up. No number. No caller id. Obviously we are all in awe that he called and we wait for him to call back. And we wait. And we wait. Finally a week goes by and the phone rings. My dad answers it excitedly, like he'd answered every call the past week. But this time it's Carl Reiner again. He says he read the letter my dad gave him at the signing and he found it so touching that he wanted to share it “with the others.” Then he puts the phone on speaker and Carl Reiner is having dinner with Mel Brooks and Sid Caeser. They are calling my dad to answer his question about a sketch from 50 years ago. They all make some jokes and then admit they have no idea whether Charlton Heston was named Beef Stroganoff or Sauerbraten in the sketch. But they all agree Beef Stroganoff is funnier, so they give the victory to my dad over my uncle. This was literally one of the best days of my father's entire life. His heroes called him up to chat and make jokes and thank him for caring. It meant the world to him then, and it means as much to me now that they would do that. As a sidenote a few years later my dad went to the Museum of Television in New York and decided to watch some stuff from the archives. There they had some episodes of Your Show of Shows that aren't available anywhere else. My dad sat down and watched them all. On the very last episode they announced a special guest- Charlton Heston. My dad held his breath. The sketch begins just as my dad remembers it. And then Sid Caeser tells Carl Reiner “Go to this restaurant and ask for Saurbrauten.” So even your heroes get it wrong sometimes. But I love that my dad made the joke funnier. Thanks Carl for inspiring my dad to be a writer. And thanks for being so kind, generous and warm. He tried to follow in your footsteps in all of those things and I'm trying to follow in his.

  20. Update from my hospital in Houston. We are opening up another ICU and downgrade unit for COVID patients. Currently our four ICUs are full. For the patients that are in our emergency center I've heard from nurses there that they are reaching out to hospitals in places like College Station and Huntsville to take our COVID ICU patients since we are out of space. I worked overtime this week to make up for how short staffed we are as nurses are starting to have symptoms of COVID and calling in. We are pulling nurses from downgrade floors to take our patients, which is super unsafe since they don't have ICU experience. We did stop elective procedures this week on my unit but I'm worried that these patients that aren't able to get cardiac caths done will eventually come in emergently after having a heart attack. We had several of these the first time we shut down elective procedures.

  22. The GOP and conservatives potentially have a very important role. There is a heavy need for the voters/representatives who rein in progressivism by asking questions like “how are we going to pay for that” and “what’s the real cost”. I am not old enough or studied enough to know if that was ever the reality of how the GOP served (I suspect this was the case during the Eisenhower administration), but it doesn’t appear to have been the case since at least 2000. Sadly, over at least the last 20 years, the GOP slid from conservatism to regression. People today calling themselves conservatives are in reality regressives; they’re not ensuring progress is made responsibly and with accountability, they’re actively working to take society backwards. Embracing Trump was not only the death blow to their credibility as the party of family values and fiscal responsibility, it shifted their focus completely away from the parts of their ideology that have value. In the context of our 2 party system, I am hopeful the GOP can shift into the proper role I described above as stewards of responsibility and accountability who serve as a check on radical liberalism. But the only way that can happen is if the demagoguery represented by Trump is irreversibly defeated. The 2016 election was devastating, but it wasn’t the end of the story. In my opinion, a Trump Re-election would definitely mean the end of the GOP as anything other than the party of fascism, but quite possibly could mean the end of progress in our country.

  23. No one is excited about Biden. But I’m excited he can put together the right cabinet and staff to really do some visionary things IF a blue wave turns the senate and keeps the house. Biden will just listen to experts and chart a path. That’s something to howl for, and hope hasn’t been around in about 3 or so years.
