Marvel is overplaying their hand.  A deal will probably still get done eventually.

From what some are saying, Marvel paid much of the production costs of the new Spideys in return for the right to use him in the MCU.  Marvel came back after Far From Home made Sony a fuckton of money and wanted 50% of the profits in return for paying for 50% of the production costs.

Anyways, here’s Sony’s official statement:

Quote

Much of today’s news about Spider-Man has mischaracterized recent discussions about Kevin Feige’s involvement in the franchise. We are disappointed, but respect Disney’s decision not to have him continue as a lead producer of our next live action Spider-Man film. We hope this might change in the future, but understand that the many new responsibilities that Disney has given him—including all their newly added Marvel properties—do not allow time for him to work on IP they do not own. Kevin is terrific and we are grateful for his help and guidance and appreciate the path he has helped put us on, which we will continue.

So publicly, it sounds like they worked out the money issue.  Or perhaps they would only accept the 50/50 deal if Feige was lead producer.

Basically a PR battle now, Sony had to say that it wasn't their fault because Disney is trying to drum up fan outrage to force Sony back to the negotiating table, and its working.

Even Sony knows how shitty their movies were before.    I guess their thinking is 100% of 700M is better than 50% of 1B.   Spidey movies still draw like crazy no matter how shitty they have been.

Into the Spiderverse was pretty awesome, and that was all Sony.

Also, didn't Disney want Asa Buttefield and Sony insisted on Tom Holland?

Exactly.  Marvel is reportedly asking for their share to go from 5% of gross they got on the last two Spiderman movies to 50% of profits going forward.  No way Sony should do that.

Holland has become one of the biggest stars still active in the Marvel movies as well.  He'll be one of the bigger draws for future team up movies.  Marvel needs a deal to get done too.

It was great!   Still no one thinks Sony can make a good live action movie.

They lost Pascal and Feige.  Mouse has plenty of IP to play with.

This is partly it, plus the two most highly profitable movies in the franchise were still Raimi's movies so it's not exactly like they haven't done well in the market before.  TAS2 simply did poorly for a multitude of reasons.  I imagine they drop Venom and Spidey into the same universe and integrate it another way.  The best Spidey movie is a cartoon and was Sony produced so they're not totally bumbling idiots, just partly.  Now Fox.... that's an entirely different story.

Kit Harington (Jon Snow) will be in the new Eternals movie as Dane Whitman, who becomes Black Knight. Talk about typecasting.

So the Spider-man news is really interesting.  3rd film going to happen and he gets another MCU film, but teased he could go back into Sony's Venom universe or a crossover between them?

Just curious.  How long does Sony have the Spider-Man right sewn up for? Perpetuity?

Yep, unless they go too long without making a movie. Which is why we got repeats of the origin story so close together. The rights also revert back if Sony is purchased (like is currently rumored to be happening with Apple). So Marvel may just be waiting out someone purchasing Sony.

I'm assuming there is language that Spiderman can be used in other movies, but only one stand alone movie?

That seems to be what is reported from the recent deal.

True but it was a fun terrible movie. I'd much rather watch a fun terrible movie than an excruciating okay movie, like some MCU movies.

I mean I guess a fun/bad movie would be a good explanation.  I don't think it was that bad(I Know, I never do), but it wasn't as good as the last 2 Spiderman movies.

https://www.wired.com/story/taika-waititi-thor-love-and-thunder/

Quote

Waititi recently completed the first script for his sequel to Thor: Ragnarok, Thor: Love and Thunder. As you might imagine from the poster, it’ll have the same rock ‘n‘ roll, over-the-top energy as its predecessor, but more of it. "It's going to be bigger and louder and more bombastic," the director says. "It's only interesting to me if we're doubling down on how nuts Ragnarok was."

I really hope it's not too much more over the top than Ragnarok. Feel like that was the perfect amount...if it's more than that it could be too much.

Never one of their biggest earners, but some of the most fun and rewatchable movies they have are the Ant-Man movies.

Ant-Man and Guardians were definitely the most pleasant surprises to me so far, and I'm all for watching more of them.
