Dr. Manhattan said he could put his powers into some organic matter, and a person could ingest that matter and absorb his powers.

This whole season has a theme with eggs.

He told Angela to watch the eggs in the kitchen he was making waffles, but she crushed them.

That has to be a Chekhov’s Gun. He put his powers in an egg. Who is going to eat it and become the new Dr. Manhattan?

Angela seems too obvious. I doubt it is actually Bob Benson, I mean Senator Bob Benson.

My money’s on Will Reeves.

Well, I guess I should have gone with the obvious answer.

I was going to say the only thing they didn’t wrap up was the identity of Lube Man. Then I went to the HBO website, and the Peteypedia was updated with the following file:

https://www.hbo.com/content/dam/hbodata/series/watchmen/peteypedia/09/memo-dale-petey.pdf

MEMORANDUM

Privileged and Confidential

TO : ANTI-VIGILANTE TASK FORCE (GROUP)

FROM : DEPUTY DIRECTOR FARRAGUT

DATE : OCTOBER 1, 2019

SUBJECT : DALE PETEY

Effective immediately, Dale Petey is no longer an agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and his employment by the Anti-Vigilante Task Force has been terminated.

(Former) Agent Petey’s computer folder will be deleted from the share server in 48 hours, after which time his meandering, self-indulgent memos (he certainly puts the “I” in FBI) and ridiculous documents will only exist as hard copy. Let the legacy of “Peteypedia” be an example of how NOT to conduct professional electronic discourse. Moving forward, I expect to see only the most succinct analysis and most pertinent information in your folders, not exhaustive summations of television programs as if they were in any way relevant to anything, nor schematics of pornographic space-age sex toys. Understood?

Similarly, a maintenance crew will be boxing up the contents of Petey’s office later this afternoon. Anyone interested in taking anything from the stacks of media, ephemera, and straight-up junk cluttering his workspace — multiple copies of Rorschach’s Journal, hundreds of “comic” books (why our society is still so obsessed with pirates is beyond me) and a jug of what appears to be some kind of canola oil, help yourselves. Let the record reflect that I have personally removed a new album by The Nine Inch Nails entitled The Manhattan Project, as my son listens to that garbage, it is rotting his brain, and it brought me great personal delight to smash this “music” into pieces.

Finally, I know there has been considerable chatter about what happened to Petey and his recent work with Agent Blake. Let me address those matters briefly and in order of importance.

I can confirm that Agent Blake has resurfaced following her disappearance in Tulsa. She is currently being debriefed at a secure and classified location due to the sensitive nature of the discoveries she made over the course of her investigations, none of which I am privy to. For those of you whispering that said discoveries involve hoaxes and conspiracies linked to our Commander in Chief, I will remind you all of your oaths. What matters most is that Agent Blake is alive and well and she wishes to thank those who cared for her pet owl while she was away.

As for (former) Agent Petey, the circumstances of his dismissal are as simple as they are baffling. After defiantly refusing my direct order to suspend his activities in Tulsa and return to Washington, I had no choice but to instruct the field office there to relieve him of his badge.

My understanding from Tulsa PD is that he has now gone missing. Given the simultaneous deaths of a U.S. senator and a prominent trillionaire, it would appear Petey has taken it upon himself to continue the investigation despite our closing it. It’s clear now from his memos that Petey (Hero Enthusiast-Obsessive/ Solipsist on the Werthem Spectrum) is at risk for vigilante behavior, and most likely, always was. Perhaps sooner or later, this task force will be investigating him.

God help us all,

Max Farragut
Deputy Director, Federal Bureau of Investigation

It started out with tons of questions, but the questions were incredibly interesting. They really built the anticipation expertly.  Every episode left me wanting more answers.  This last one put the appetite to bed for a bit.  An almost perfect first season.

Would love to see more but will be OK if this is it.

So good...

This article explains a lot of the little Easter Eggs (eggs!) from the episode.

They missed one thing, unless they deemed it too obvious.
the password bian uses to access veight’s baby batter was rameses II. Which makes sense considering his narcissism.

And perhaps considering that Rameses II was Ozymandias?

That was magnificent. Since Lindelof is out for another season, I hope they get someone worth a damn if HBO decides to have another season.

Don't call Benioff or Weiss.

Craig Mazin - writer/show runner of “Chernobyl” - has been doing the official podcast with Lindelof and seems to be just as big a Watchmen fanboy.

Maybe he would be good if paired up with Jensen and the rest of the current writers and directors.

I like that combo. Jensen for his writing ability/devotion and knowledge to the Watchmen source material, and Mazin to run the show.

Yeah, if they do this again, they need to take the Fargo approach.  Do a show in the 70s around time of Keene Act.  Or the capture of Moloch.  Perhaps don't try to copy Lindelof's style of purposely confusing, because I don't think most people can.

That said, I'd be fine if they don't do another season.

no

It’s really not a dumb question on his part. When Veidt mentions that he’s writing a play, it’s actually in reference to the game warden and his escape attempt, not The Watchmaker’s Son. The show’s creator admitted this on the last episode of the podcast.

So it’s possible that’s the same Phillips that becomes the game warden.

Damon Lindeloff in an interview regarding whether Angela got Dr. Manhattan's powers said to look to the original poster for the tv series---in that poster Angela is in full costume and half her figure is bathed in a blue light.  That egg had the power.

Also felt like they made it obvious with Dr M standing on the pool telling her "you need to see me doing this it'll be important for later."

While I thought the finale wasn't quite up to the level creatively as the Hooded Justice origin and last week's Dr.Manhattan story, I thought it landed the plane well so to speak. I really enjoyed the show from start to finish.

Agreed, and it's hard sometimes to wrap it up in a way that's compelling as the building up of the mystery.

Ummm, all the dudes on Europa are Mr. Phillips and all the women are Mrs. Crookshanks.

Did you watch the series with your eyes closed?

I specifically said the Mr. Phillips from the first episode. The show clearly uses misdirection and I wasn't sure if you were led to believe the 1st Phillips you see who is going to be the lead in the play was the one burned alive or painted blue but rather the game warden.

To clarify this discussion, I listened to the official podcast today.

Lindelof said the play Veidt was writing was not the brief stage show we saw but EVERYTHING we saw in the Europa scenes. He scripted everything all the clones said and did to kill time until the time Trieu’s satellite was scheduled to fly by.

He said “all the Phillips and all the Crookshanks” and said they were all copies of copies.

I believe she absorbed his powers, but DM isn't dead. Somehow she will bring him back. Look firward to S2 if there is one. Like the Fargo approach. Just hope it doesn't turn into a True Detective S2.

My thought was like in the movie, if no one absorbed DM’s powers from the machine then DM could work his way back and reform himself at some point in S2.

Also predict at the start of S2 that Angela falls into the water like a normal powerless person in episode 1 and thinks the eggs wasn’t special until she gets powers at the end of episode 2 or 3.

Lindelof said in the official Watchmen pod that he currently doesn’t have an idea for Season 2. He just seems content to have finished Season 1.

I think he left it pretty open to return at some point. Also, the guy seems to genuinely love his writers. He probably wants to get the gang back together in the future. I think the only things holding Lindelof back are:

1) He cares deeply about the source material and Alan Moore’s original vision. His personal need to tell the story of 1921 Black Wall Street Massacre is what convinced him to do Watchmen in the first place. He mentioned several African Americans in the business have tried to start projects around Black Wall Street and they’ve been unsuccessful. Lindelof probably thinks of himself as greasing the skids for those worthwhile projects. So yeah, basically he needs remarkable inspiration.

2) The critical and fan backlash from prolonging Lost. He hints at ABC forcing him to do more seasons than he wanted. HBO seems pretty hands off. When Lindelof told them about his idea, HBO said he could do whatever he wanted. I think If he feels pressured, he’ll walk. It’s hard to tell what motivates the guy, but money/ fame doesn’t appear to be it. I think he enjoys acclaim from the fans though.

If they do make a season 2, they need to spend a couple years developing the story instead of trying to get a new season out next year. I think part of the problem with shows like this is that the creators have the idea in their head for years and they are constantly tweaking it until we get a masterful creation. Then they have to rush to put out something for season 2 without any of that years long planning process and we end up with Westworld season 2.

Given Lindelof’s success extending on both Watchmen and the Leftovers, maybe he should identify some other IP he loves and extend on that.

Nothing comes to mind right now that hasn’t been attempted with less success.  Maybe Children of Men would be good?

I think an original project is the move, but we’ll see. There’s talk of a R rated X Men project. Lindelof should be their first call.

I want a Leftovers prequel.

This show was better than I expected. I hated the movie (when I could stay awake), so I did have low expectations.  It was in a good spot time wise, since pretty much every series I like has either ended or is still on extended hiatus.

But I didn’t love the “all mysteries revealed!” rapid-fire Marvel-style finale, complete with the James Bond villain’s monologue and last second save from certain doom.

Put me down as OK if it’s done and OK if it’s not.
