My daughter has been through some shit she has no fault in, no input into and no way of avoiding. A few years back, as my divorce was just beginning I started a new tradition with her. Every year we dressed to the nines, and we will go see The Nutcracker at the Ellie Caulkins Opera house in Denver, followed by a really nice dinner at a very nice/fancy restaurant. Just got home 2 hours ago from this year's extravaganza. We giggled, and made jokes, we talked and talked, and then giggled some more, we got caught up in the magic and wonderment of Christmas, we watched a really good ballet, we giggled again, we ate like Kings/Queens, we giggled again, we went through one hell of a sugar rush, and then crashed out HARD less than 3 minutes after walking in the front door. Watching her with her little mouth agape while being caught up in the whimsy of the ballet, and seeing her hands involuntarily moving in artistic circles like she was directing the orchestra itself was absolute magic to me. Christmas long ago stopped being about the magic for myself. 9 years ago it started being about MAKING the magic for her, which of course directly translates into it being magic for me. What comes around goes around and all that. Tonight I was blessed again to be able to make some of that magic for her and with her. I pray to God that when the Alzheimers, or dementia, or whatever else comes to take my mind from me, that the last memory to leave me is the memory of tonight with my little girl.32 points

My own was December 22nd, 1983. The first four years of my life was spent living in a single wide trailer. It was 50 feet long or so. My father, a mechanic trained in Germany starting at age nine to repair Mercedes vehicles, came to the United States with my Oma and his army stepfather (A violent drunk) in 1964. Fast forward to 1977 and he had purchased 15 acres of land in my hometown. This is a true story. He bought one of those yellow DIY books and the one he bought was how to build a house. My mom still has the book. My father was a brilliant human being. For the next 6 plus years he slowly built a house. He worked 60 hours plus a week. He added to the house when he had money. 36 years ago today my parents surprised my younger brother and I by moving us into the house and had a housewarming party by inviting all of our family. It was amazing. The house was not finished, but we could live there. He had well water and electricity courtesy of the Pedernales River Electric Corp. 36 years later my younger brother is back there. He and his girlfriend turned my bedroom into a nursery for their first child, Emma Grace, who was born in February. The room is just amazingly beautiful. My mother is still there and she is retired and loving having a grandchild. My father never completely finished the house. Someone asked her why she never allowed the house to be done competely because my brother could finish everything. She said "She wanted it left just how my dad did it because it was perfect to her like that." He passed away in April 2011 and she has been adamant about the house being left alone. That memory of moving into an actual house was amazing and I love this day and look forward to it every year even though I am 1500 miles or so away. I would love to hear some good Christmas or other holiday celebration memories. This is such a fun time of year.13 points

I ceased being a Cowboys fan when that carpetbagging Arkansas yayhoo Jerrah treated the venerated Tom Landry like shit.12 points

Before today, I had never heard the name Mike Yurcich. I know nothing about him. We may never hire him, but I'm already angry with him for our playing calling in the 2020 OU game.11 points

This is what the football board needs more of, sincere shitposting. Hire a fucking terrible former college HC because he wins at one of the best high school football programs in Texas? Sure, why not, you crazy motherfucker.11 points

Holy shit man, I'm sold. You really think we have a shot at the guy who went (squints) 6-37 at North Texas? Let's keep the conversation flowing, lots of good ideas in this thread.10 points

My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet. My father would womanize, he would drink, he would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Some times he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy, the sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. My childhood was typical, summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When I was insolent I was placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds, pretty standard really. At the age of 12 I received my first scribe. At the age of fourteen, a Zoroastrian named Vilma ritualistically shaved my testicles. There really is nothing like a shorn scrotum, it's breathtaking, I suggest you try it.7 points

I’m gonna call bullshit on that. Not that I trust the judgement of Herman or Jackson’s iq, but Smith would have tweeted that a lot sooner.6 points

As most have surmised main target was still in-season so we had to wait for that to wrap up. He finished things up yesterday. Expect the announcement on Tuesday.6 points

I ordered Disney+ since the kids are at home for a couple of weeks. We have Ratatouille DVD but this was still the third thing they watched. They asked if I could make Ratatouille. Here it is...6 points

Not really specific to the holidays, but my wife is currently going through her usual routine of waiting until the last second to get her part of the house cleaning complete. We have friends coming in from Georgia tonight and a Christmas party tomorrow. Usually goes something like this: 1) Talk about these grandiose cleaning plans for weeks... "I'm going to do this, and then tomorrow this, and then Saturday this..." 2) Wait until the final day. 3) Find some reason to go shopping. 4) Frantically run around and scream at the kids for 4 hours while trying to get everything done.5 points

I guess this is a mixed bag. On the one hand, that’s pretty cool for ol’Francisco. On the other hand, he had a chance to just veer into Satan and remove him from everyone else’s equations and he failed on that front.5 points

If Pedo gets him, TH is stupid and a POS for not locking him up. If we get him, TH is stupid and a POS for going with the comfort hire. It is the surly way.4 points

Give me Yurcich over Helfrich. Not sure if Helfrich has ever called plays. If he did, it was after Frost left when Oregon went downhill. Kelly called plays when Helfrich was OC, and Frost called them when Helfrich became HC.4 points

No money shot on the filet, was a little more medium than medium rare but was still good. Extra cayenne in the hollandaise makes a huge difference.4 points

It’s amazing how fragile some white people are when it comes to talking about race and the advantages that the average white person has because of race/history. It’s avoidance at first, deflection next, then finally wanting to “deal with it” so that we can move on like it’s taking spankings from a father. You can see it right here in this thread in 2019. There is no moving on. This is who we are as a nation and we will be dealing with it forever. There is no single conversation, scholarship, or book to read that fixes this. What will help is constant awareness of the past and how it shapes the present. Constant vigilance to interrupt the racism that still persists today, and fight for a better future for ALL kids. If you care, you will have to fight through all denials, deflections, whataboutisms, and claims that you are making everything about race. You also have to know that when you die this isn’t a problem that will be resolved and that it’s a struggle that will go on forever. For those of you that seem to be really uncomfortable with these conversations or want to avoid them, I hope you will ask yourself why that is.4 points

Pulled the trigger on a 2020 AT4 1500 Sierra with the turbo diesel. Got 500 miles out of my first tank in shitty Dallas traffic. Just got a 2” leveling kit to take out that horrible rake and put a bakflip tonneau cover on which are the only mods I plan on doing. This thing is a blast to drive.4 points

Excellent reply. And absofuckinglutely I am. I bought an inappropriate sweater that I feel adequately represents my feelings, and I'm bringing a bottle of bourbon to pour into a bowl. They want everyone to eat soup? Fine. I'll sit down and drink whiskey with a spoon until I'm drunk enough to make them all wish they had made better decisions.4 points

When I was in the 3rd grade, I wrote Merry X-Mas on the chalkboard. Some gargantuan girl about a foot taller than me shoved me and erased X-Mas and spelled Christmas and mumbled something about reason for the season. I mumbled something like: "fuck you dyke, I don't know how to spell Christmas."3 points
