  1. Yeah I'm still around. I quit posting for a number of reasons. But I feel compelled to share this: I survived Hodgkin's Lymphoma 8 years ago. Didn't look back. Many of you may remember my sharing my journey (I used to be McAllan12'sBetterHalf, and my husband, who is apparently a lot smarter than me in this regard, blew y'all off a long time ago.) On March 5 this year I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I had surgery three weeks ago and we are evaluating my options for further treatment. I will say to anyone who does not or will not wear a mask, and expects me to just sit at home on lockdown (which I can't do anyway because of doctor appointments) so you can go to Costco and get your fucking Pringles or to Chili's for your fucking wings or to get your goddam haircut without being bothered to cover your face for 15 minutes because "muh freedums!" I hope you get fucked in the ass with a hot poker and then get Covid and die the most horrible death possible. In that order. No, check that. I hope you get Covid, have a hellish six weeks on a ventilator, and then end up with COPD and all sorts of other horrible auto-immune and lung diseases that make your life miserable for then next 30 years and then die in a lingering and painful way. Harsh? Tough fucking shit. I am showing you the same regard and respect you're showing me. None. And there are too many ignorant pricks who seem to think that either you are old and die in 5 minutes if you get Covid, and those people should just be shut-ins until there is a vaccine, or that you are asymptomatic and will be fine. I'd love for you to experience first hand that there are other outcomes. So yeah, just brush aside the fact that mortality rates haven't risen with this last surge (yet) as evidence that you can act like a fucking toddler who doesn't want to do something just to show that you don't have to listen to mommy all of the time. I hope you suffer the consequences ten-fold. One last thing before someone chimes in with faux concern for my mental health. Yeah I know it ain't good. Yeah I"m angry. Furious, even. The President of the country I live in, and the Governor and Lt. Governor of the state I live in, want to kill me. If that's not grounds to want to throttle someone with my bare hands I don't know what is. And yes I have all the personal support I could need or want. It still doesn't do any good when I've got cancer in the middle of a fucking pandemic and a good percentage of the people around me have as much regard for my health and safety as they would a piece of trash on the street. OK I'm out for another two years or unless I croak first. At this rate given the way things are going it's debatable as to which I'd prefer.

  2. It has been a disheartening journey and it is only starting. I did not realize how there really is no definitive treatment for the illness until we got COVID patients. When they first come on our unit they are not intubated yet and are on maximum supplemental oxygen. They are all agitated and keep pulling off their oxygen devices so we are constantly running into the room to hold the oxygen device onto their face. The doctors don't like intubating as it is hard to extubate/take them off the breathing tube. Eventually though the patients need to be intubated as their oxygenation numbers aren't so hot. After they are intubated the patients usually have to be paralyzed so they can tolerate the breathing tube. Then starts the waiting game of hoping they'll start to improve on the various trial medications and proning them. Meanwhile, COVID wrecks havoc on all of the other organs in these patients. We have only have a few success stories and those patients were the younger ones. Everyone I work with is emotionally drained and the last shift we had two COVID patients that coded. I have family members calling around the clock and I never have anything positive to tell them. We still don't have enough PPE and I rewear my N95 until is breaks. I know that I'll eventually get COVID if I haven't already but at least I'm young and healthy. The older nurses are very nervous and one kept saying "I don't feel safe/I'm scared" the last shift I worked. This is probably more information than you wanted to know but it was therapeutic to type this out. Thanks for reaching out on what it has been like.

  4. Long time lurker but decided to bite the bullet and register since I can offer some perspective on this. I'm an ICU RN in Houston and the ICUs at my hospital are definitely overwhelmed. Elective procedures had started back up at my hospital that required ICU admission afterwards but I have a feeling that will come to a halt now with us having no empty beds. My ICU became a COVID overflow unit in March but we are now at capacity with the majority of our patients with COVID and intubated. The main ICU where COVID patients go has been full for awhile now but they have been able to always downgrade a patient just in time for them to take another sick one. That is not the case anymore as the intubated COVID patients are not getting better and stay for several weeks. The last shift I worked they had intubated patients just chilling in the EC because we were out of beds. Texas Children's and MD Anderson are going to start taking patients from at capacity hospitals since certain hospitals are out of space.

  8. Unfortunately, we're all in the orbit of stupid. Every American and much of the world is in this together. DOTARD's orbit of stupid is a black hole that is sucking in our judicial system, education, medical and general health. And it's accelerating because nobody knows what could happen in November, so we got to break shit now and in the next few months. This is what's happening. It doesn't even make sense to deny COVID testing to Texas or anywhere he has potential voters but there he is, threatening to withhold testing at his own rally. Wearing a mask is against him--wtf how? How does this even make sense? How do you debate against this orbit of stupid? We're all pulling for Joe to bth out of a jumbo sized toddler on a stage which a) isn't going to happen because b) it's a damn toddler and it makes rules that nobody with gravity or common sense can understand. Kelly Ann Conway is still one of his apologizers (White House aides) and she just word vomits on a camera. They laugh, cheer and celebrate him drinking a glass of water with one hand and walking down a ramp--not together either. He says nothing, he's put forth no actual legislation--only repeals, lies, cheats and destroys which somehow benefits his cult. And we're supposed to believe that we can survive 4 more years of this? The elderly said hell, we're dying so nothing will survive. Unions voted for this assclown that threatens them. Cubans voted for him even though he's against Latinos--like racists separate shades of brown. Elderly vote for him even though he threatens them with COVID. Religious vote for him even though he can't name a bible verse, has broken every commandment and undoes legislation to destroy the ones he hasn't. Middle class Anglos back him even though he threatens their SS, Medicare/caid and now 401ks. His selling points are he's Republican, White, racist and ran a fake show about him not bankrupting businesses. He's burning down everything and they pay him to do it--his campaign contributions go into his pocket. He no longer really needs businesses to function because he's got the treasury and bailout money and uses the military to protect his properties. But Republicans also think they'll control this illness and get richer in the meantime while securing their future. Or maybe they're just taking it with them. And Democrats are so used to fkg themselves they feel unloved otherwise-- judging our own in accordance to appeal to every race, demographic, history and subtext. We've already tried to impeach so can't do it again--what's the point? How about you're the only line of defense? And for the asshats on both sides, It's like going into a restaurant and telling the waiter the steak is too rare, I'll go with the bowl of shit, but bleach the hell out of it so it doesn't look like shit. And I want everybody to eat it with me. I don't get it. Yeah, I'm fine today but let's all stock up on guns and ammo in case the government we create goes off the rails. This ship isn't going to be righted easily when almost half the population is against science, logic, affordable medicine and education and things like clean air and water. We're all going to eat a bowl of shit, probably bathe in it and when it's all wrecked, so will Trump. Except he'll be too senile to understand what he's eating--only that he can pass it down with a glass of water he can hold with one hand.

  13. No. He's not stupid. Donald Trump legitimately didn't see this coming because he is a moron. Greg Abbott is an intelligent guy and chose to tie himself to Trump in defiance of reality. Stupid or ignorant is far too complimentary of Abbott. Why do you guys keep running with this whole 'Abbott is intelligent'. If you ask me, he's buckling under the full weight of the Trumpist branch of the Republican Party. That shows you what he really stands for. He'll never be able to run for any higher office. He's paralyzed but the moment, won't stand up to Trump and his cronies to protect Texans, and is failing to walk the thin line he thought he could to escape the crisis.

  14. So today is day 60 for me. It's amazing how things seem to fall into place when I let go of control and self direction and not worry about tomorrow. I left rehab 30 days ago without a pot to piss in and started delivering for Amazon to keep myself fed. This week, I got a job offer that comes with a 10% increase over my last role. Then yesterday, I found out TWC ruled in my favor on my unemployment appeal. I will shortly be receiving 8 weeks of backdated benefits with the federal covid kicker. 15. I had exposure to a confirmed covid positive last week, so decided to get tested. Finding a place with the rapid test in Dallas was not easy. I imagined I'd be able to pull up a list of the places offering it, but where's the sport in that? I finally found it at an a standalone ER place. I called and made sure you didn't need a Dr note or meet some criteria to be tested. They told me to come in any time. I decided to wait until late at night to avoid a long wait, and that worked - I was the only person there. They asked me if I had any symptoms and I said no. They said I had to come back on specific days during the middle of the day. I kind of lost my shit at this point bc I'm the only person there. Yadda yadda not getting tested there. Then there was fuckery with my insurance company in regard to where I could get the test covered and what kind. My insurer is dumb as shit. Decided to get a regular test. Everywhete I looked said results in a couple days. Went to get the test this evening, and they tell me I'll hear back in 7-10 days. What the fuck? That kind of diminishes the value of getting tested. They said their lab, Quest, has a big backlog. This is an anecdote but I suspect it's fairly emblematic of the state of testing. It's now been 5 fucking months or whatever, and we still can't get testing streamlined. It is a God damn crime how ineptly this country is handling the pandemic. There should be rapid tests on every street corner by now. I'm pissed and ashamed for us all.

  16. The real story of that 1975 season is the lost opportunity Ole Miss had. They hadn't lost a game heading into their opener at Baylor and fell 10-20, but they prevented the Bears from raping anyone in Waco that day. With the opener dropping them under .500 for the first time all season, they were bummed to return the State of Texas just one week later to play at aggy. The aggys hadn't played a game yet, so they were well rested and able to scout Ole Miss the week before at Baylor. Ole Miss arguably had the second best defense on the field that day with a slew of All-District High Schoolers, also ran SEC players, and future Raising Cane's Assistant Managers. However, the offense was still trying to catch up and they failed to score in a 0-7 loss on a completely normal sad and depressing day in College Station. The best 0-2 team in the country had to hit the road for the third week in a row and fell to a powerful Tulane team that would've finished much stronger than 4-7 if they caught a few breaks, the ball bounced their way, and they weren't completely shitty. The Rebels vaunted "Second Best Defense on the Field" held Tulane to only 14. The offense found it's footing after being shutout the week before, and that foot was the kicker's as he booted a FG in the 3-14 loss. After the MSUCC (Mississippi State University Conspiracy Committee) arranged for Ole Miss to open with three straight road games, you knew they'd turn it around in the home opener with a rousing 24-8 win against the 4th best team in Mississippi, the Southern Miss Golden Eagles. Not even 5 year old Brett Favre could keep the Golden Eagles from falling to the rising Rebels. Of course, the NCAA couldn't allow the Rebels to get on a roll, so they're back on the road to Bama. If it had been played at home the 6-32 score would very likely have been reversed. Ole Miss then ripped off a 1 game winning streak against UGA before losing their only home game of the year to South Carolina in a game that I'm sure we all know was poorly officiated. Those trials and tribulations really brought the team together to finish the season on 4 game winning streak in which the offense excelled, even breaking 20 points one time. A failure in the bowl system not to have 40 bowl games is the only thing that prevented the Rebels from going bowling. It's safe to say they would've won their bowl game if they were good enough to play in one. Sure, they were 6-5 on the season, but they outscored their opponents 16-15. Four of their five losses were on the road. Only three of their five losses were by 10+ points. It's safe to say if they could've played all home games they would've made it very interesting. As it turned it, 1975 was a Lost Opportunity for the Ole Miss Rebels.

  17. Tarp with an absolute gem of an article about the 1975 aggy team and how close they were to a national title :: Lost opportunities: 1975 undefeated Texas A&M at Arkansas my favorite quote combos :: leading to :: Of course. What's that? How did aggy do in their bowl you ask? aggy got beat 20-0 by a USC team that had lost 4 straight games heading in to bowl season.

  20. My FIL has a 5-600 acre ranch between Llano and Fredericksburg that goes back two generations. Three if you count my wife. He’s ‘retired’ now and runs about 100 pair cow/calf operation because it’s a passion of his. He leases to hunters which supplement the taxes and other expenses. We call it the ranch but he calls it home. He says that when I show up to help it’s like losing two good men.

  25. This cracks me up. Yes, we are opened back up, but are nowhere near 100% normal. Does he know how many sporting events have been cancelled? How many millions in attendance we are off from normal? No events with fan attendance even on the horizon. How many other entertainment venues are shut down for concerts, plays, etc. How many conferences are cancelled? We are talking billions of interactions that are not happening. Airline traffic is still down to like 20% of last year. I guess some movie theaters are open. I'd love to see how pathetic those numbers are. Youth baseball is happening and I'm coaching in a mask while fan attendance is limited to 2 people per child with no concessions open and bathroom use discouraged. That's not normal. Nowhere is normal. I don't know how you put a percentage on "normal" but I'd say any reasonable measurement would not even have us at 80% normal.

  26. I'm sorry, I didn't realize the police came out and did a Don Lemon interview and called people simple minded for challenging the idea that restaurant workers might have intentionally caused food poisoning. You're chasing some sort of hypocrisy that does not exist. The reporting for both examples was dogshit, and so was the way Bubba attacked those that didn't fully buy in to his narrative.

  29. This is just complete bullshit. There are all kinds of proven examples that mask wearing by a majority of people (doesn't have to be all) can hold off the virus until it pretty much disappears. That's been shown in small lab studies but also large populations like Hong Kong, South Korea and New Zealand. COVID is no longer ripping through in the northeastern US, and those states have been "open" except for large indoor activities. That region is nowhere near herd immunity and contact tracing is rare and ineffective. So it's simply masks and social distancing. If we actually isolated positive testers and did contact tracing as well, the numbers would come down even more.

  30. I'll be alright. If I can get the next pot on the burner quickly it'll be a win - severance is based on tenure and I've got a bit over 11 years. Which is... longer than I deserve to have and also plenty long enough for any one place as a 34 year old. But still a bit hard, especially as the last several years have been tough and I've put a lot of energy into keeping the train on the tracks. I had a good phone screener last week for a job that I think would be really great. Call went well, sourcing lady said she'd pass my name along to the manager and that I might hear from them middle of this week. Good company, the right mix of.... stuff I'm familiar with and stuff that moves me towards where I think my future is (really the kind of thing I was supposed to be doing for the past 6 months if we could've stopped bailing water and firing people and instead focused on building shit. Pure remote which is interesting, but we're trying to move and that could really open things up. If y'all want to put some good vibes in the air for me I'd appreciate it. Sorry for some kinda... off topic or whatever. But man the last time I faced rejection from something I'd put this much of my life into I turned into a pile of salt. Whenever I'm having some kinda thing that's really grinding my gears or I'm just pissed, meetings are good. I don't get there as much as I used to, which I guess is the goal. I'm lowkey freaking out, but also I'm not really - definitely not in that place. Thinking back on where I've been, which is at least part of why I want to go to the sober place in crisis, just reminds me... I'm playing with house money, and whatever anxiety I have now doesn't touch what I used to wake up to every single day.

That was well under the state’s overall positive test rate at the time, which averaged 3.7 percent for the week. This week, 1,288 people were tested at a Boston site set up for protesters. Fourteen, or 1.08 percent, came back positive. Other locations reporting no measurable spike in cases after widely attended protests include Philadelphia, Seattle, Sacramento, and upstate New York.

  35. I doubt he could identify the country where they're being massacred nor name that country's leader. Didn't Trump explicitly state, either during the campaign or after the election, that the promotion of democracy and human rights wasn't going to be part of his foreign policy? Newsflash: It's not part of his domestic policy, either. Just ask the kids in cages or the peaceful protesters (and journalists and clergy) who were violently forced out of Lafayette Square with flash grenades, chemical irritants, and rubber bullets. How about his alleged support of Xi imprisoning a million Uighurs in Chinese Communist Reeducation Camps? What about him taking Kim Jong Un's side after the murder of Otto Warmbier or MBS's side after the butchery of Jamal Khashoggi? Fuck Mike Pompeo and fuck Trump.

  37. No, you see, his trick only works if you make him address one thing at a time. See, he can rationalize and deflect things piecemeal that way. You’ll never get him to actually take in information comprehensively, weigh it all in the balance, and render commentary that’s fully informed by every idea that’s been presented. He’s not wired like that. None of these people are. Their brains are the house that cognitive dissonance built, and goldfish have longer attention spans. They only read just far enough to identify what shitty high school debate club tactic they can employ next. They will never examine their own ideas critically, just as they will never consider other competing ideas hypothetically. They need to be in therapy. Instead, they’re ushering in Fascism 2.0.
