  1. A mask is not a political statement. It's an IQ test.

  2. It is a typical GOP ploy: do hardly anything to meaningfully address the issue. Argue that the Dems should vote for it because “something is better than nothing.” Then resist all future attempts to address the problem because “we already did something; you people will never be satisfied!” When that is the known ploy, the only winning move is to refuse to play. Fuck em. Win the house and senate, then pass a good bill.

  3. Warren supporters like Hugo have convinced themselves that VP is some sort of silver medal or consolation prize for her primary run. They also believe that with Liz as VP she would be the de facto POTUS, and they will push that angle all over social media if she was selected. Which is exactly what Trump wants. He's desperately trying to find a leftist bogeyman to run against, as all the "socialist!" and "crazy left!" shit clearly hasn't worked with Biden. Again, it's very clear this isn't a policy general election. We can't fuck this up. If/when Biden dominates and wins the general election, Warren and Bernie Democrats can (and should) challenge Biden to for more progressive policies. Just fucking wait until the election is over.

  4. This is complete domination right now. And nothing between now and November is going to help Trump. I don't give a shit about the vaccine talk. Trump's COVID response has been criminal, and the rise in cases highlight what a disaster the entire GOP is right now. The strategy moving forward is simple. - Stay focused and engaged. Stay angry. - Fight voter suppression and boost voter turnout as much as possible - Pick a POC as VP. Don't try to appease progressives with someone like Warren. - Fundraise like crazy and put money/resources in every state where they have a chance.. Don't just focus on 6 battleground states. Try to win Texas. Try to win Utah. - Don't strategize to win 270 electoral votes. The goal should be 400. Obliterate this motherfucker .

  6. Can you imagine if you took today's American population and time warped us back to WWII when Roosevelt asked people to limit their consumption of gas and butter and sugar to help with the war effort and the greater good? We'd have people watering their yards with gasoline and eating sticks of butter for dinner just to make the point that they won't be told what to do.

  8. The Dakotas just piss me off. Why do we gotta have two of 'em? I mean, a North Dakota AND South Dakota. Combined, the two states had an estimated population of 1,646,721 people in 2019 and have FOUR US Senators. The Austin MSA had 2,227,083, and we're barely represented in the House because of fucked up gerrymandering. Like I said, the Dakotas just piss me off. Sorry for the rant.

  10. Or maybe it's just a fucking knot someone tied. As always, the demand for racism in this country far outpaces the supply. Why that pisses some of you off so much is anyone's guess.

  11. Well, he does seem like he sucks, but it is his right to say what he wants. I don't believe any government entity should step in and force him to close for what he says. If he continues to be a prick and his bar sucks, which it seems like it does, let the market decide and he'll go out of business. Just don't go if you're offended. If enough people are offended and stop going, then problem solved.

  12. Hey fuckhead, yes no politics. This thread has worked great for well over a dozen pages and here you show up to throw your fucking tantrum that there’s some spot you can’t smear your political thoughts on. Get the fuck out of here. Go back to the other thread. And be sure to get fucked in the process.

  15. There are two Dakotas. Most people didn't know that 'til I pointed it out. A south one and a north one. There's one on Central Park where Lennon got shot, but that's not a state like these other two places. The Central Park one is a dump. I could shoot a Beatle, are there any left? I could shoot a Beatle and not lose a singe vote. But the do nothing Democrat party wants to revote...and revoke your great, beautiful second amendment. Here, watch me drink some water.

  16. I've gotten a lot of comments from the newly-converted along the lines "if it was such a big deal, why didn't they MAKE me do this stuff? If I'm 'allowed' to do something, that means it's OK to do it. I shouldn't have been free to do things if they were a bad idea." Apparently the populace is a collective 4-year-old.

  17. Haven't posted in this thread in a long time. But had our pooch Crosby do a rover weekend, and were sent a couple of pics. I swear you could drop him in the middle of Afghanistan and he'd be the happiest dog there. He's turning 11 next month, and he's starting to show his age getting up much slower, sleeping a lot more, but still happy as a clam. Can't let myself think too far ahead with him.

  30. De Tocqueville said otherwise. We used to strike some semblance of a balance between individualism and acting for the common good. We are very, very out of balance right now. Balance is key. Communism and the sacrifice of the individual completely? Not where we want to go. Utter sacrifice of the common good for whatever the individual wants? Not where we want to be....but it's pretty close to where we are. We are a fractured society -- and that goes far beyond the "we are so divided politically" acknowledgement. We are fractured on the community, family, and individual basis. And that's ultimately destructive -- we are by nature and biology a species that performs and survives best in community. The individual should be allowed to achieve, but the good of the community matters, too. And we've taken it to such absurd extremes that the IDEA of freedom has utterly trumped any concept of the VALUE of freedom. So, maybe you CAN refuse to wear a mask.....but the ethical question is SHOULD you refuse to wear a mask? And a huge percentage of us are coming up with a really, really shitty answer to that. They are equating the very concept of even having a right with the obligation to exercise that right no matter what. Why? Why not choose to wear a mask because it's the decent thing to do for the good of your fellow man? I mean, it's the reason that I don't blare my music at 180 dbs at the beach -- I might have the RIGHT to do so.....but it would be rude and inconsiderate, so I don't. When we sacrifice the common good on the altar of the individual, not because we should, but because we blindly insist that we CAN.......that's how you kill a community (which is all that any country/nation is).

  32. Can you guys please stop bringing up New York, especially in the Texas thread? It's like a bat signal for the worst poster on the DT, who then derails the thread with stupidity for several pages until he gets embarrassed so badly that he slinks away and hides out for a few days until someone else brings New York up again. We were doing so well.

  35. All this talk about "we're going to take further measures if things get worse". What does that really mean? There is still a significant lag between infection, symptom onset, testing, test results and hospitalization. So positive case results and hospitalizations are pretty much fully baked in for the next 2 weeks. Those numbers are what they are. And it sure as hell seems like they aren't going to be very pretty. What we do today and the next 10 days impacts how the numbers look in mid through the end of July. We all watched this play out in real time in New York. Once they made tough decisions it was too late. I'm not predicting we get to that level but it seems pretty ridiculous to halt elective surgeries but not also make mask wearing mandatory statewide and significantly roll back (if not close) bars and restaurant capacity. And flat out shut down weddings and other large events period so redneck dumbasses like some in my wife's family aren't convinced they are still holding a big ass wedding in a few weeks (the ridiculousness of this discussion within the family is worthy of its own post, and my wife is in the wedding, so putting her in an awkward position). The public has shown we aren't capable of making smart decisions so time for someone to be the grown up.

  37. Yes, if you have the curve bent then people getting it now is likely better. We don't have zero cases in Chicago but we have the overall number of new cases well under control. Nobody in the field is out here being irrational about we have to get this to zero. Not at all... Texas and many other states problems are because the hospitals are about to become a total shitshow. I posted that IL waited a couple weeks longer than what the numbers may have shown because we had a LOT of ICU capacity pretty much the whole time - with the help of our shitty weather and aggressive politicians we did a good job here. There's no way much of Texas can be having the 'let them get it while the virus is less potent' convo because you guys are having a massive run on ICU beds. Meaning, even the less severe virus isn't helping because your overall numbers are so high that the system will soon be up shit creek. Surly is more educated than most places but the sheer number of people in TX and AZ who were going on and on about a hoax is embarrassing shit. I have lots of family/friends in AZ too and they were the same damn way. Muh rights!! NO Masks!!! HOAX JFC

  38. It has been a disheartening journey and it is only starting. I did not realize how there really is no definitive treatment for the illness until we got COVID patients. When they first come on our unit they are not intubated yet and are on maximum supplemental oxygen. They are all agitated and keep pulling off their oxygen devices so we are constantly running into the room to hold the oxygen device onto their face. The doctors don't like intubating as it is hard to extubate/take them off the breathing tube. Eventually though the patients need to be intubated as their oxygenation numbers aren't so hot. After they are intubated the patients usually have to be paralyzed so they can tolerate the breathing tube. Then starts the waiting game of hoping they'll start to improve on the various trial medications and proning them. Meanwhile, COVID wrecks havoc on all of the other organs in these patients. We have only have a few success stories and those patients were the younger ones. Everyone I work with is emotionally drained and the last shift we had two COVID patients that coded. I have family members calling around the clock and I never have anything positive to tell them. We still don't have enough PPE and I rewear my N95 until is breaks. I know that I'll eventually get COVID if I haven't already but at least I'm young and healthy. The older nurses are very nervous and one kept saying "I don't feel safe/I'm scared" the last shift I worked. This is probably more information than you wanted to know but it was therapeutic to type this out. Thanks for reaching out on what it has been like.
