  1. Wait, did people really think there would be college football season? That universities that already exploit young men for tens of millions of dollars would get away with risking their health, amidst a pandemic, for a cash grab? College ain't the pros, and the optics of playing college football in such an environment is terrible. Maybe if this country had taken the pandemic seriously; maybe if we had actually invested in rapid, accurate testing <checks notes> six months ago when this was emerging; maybe if mouth-breathing fucking morons could be bothered to wear a mask; maybe if the dunning-kruger segment of society didn't think it was smarter than the "experts" about every fucking thing; maybe if we didn't have leaders who said grandma should die to save the economy ... then maybe we might be in an environment in which college football was possible. But no, America in 2020 is very fucking far from having its shit together, so enjoy your fall without college football.

  2. I've taught at both places. It's not even particularly close. To use John Kelso's line: "When I walk across the UT campus, I feel like an old man. When I walk across the TxSt campus, I feel like a dirty old man."

  3. This is the dumbest thing I've ever read. One person in America who can break all the laws and not play by America's rules who also has the power to appoint someone who enforces those laws and pardons or commutes sentences for his other buddies who break the law is what we are dealing with. It's not 1 person. It's the entire GOP and it's being spearheaded from the executive branch by the current president of the United States Donald Trump. The person who sits in the white house doesn't usually break the fucking laws of the country created to facilitate governing properly. This guy is wiping his ass with the constitution every day. He's defying supreme court rulings. He's left completely unchecked and just last night he reorganized the us postal service less than 100 days from one of the most important mailing events in the history of the fucking planet earth. So fuck you and fuck anyone else who thinks this isnt about saving our fucking country. The America that was created by our nation's founders and iterated upon by great men and women over the years to be a beacon of democracy and leadership thoughout the world. That America is on its death bed and this would be the killing blow.

  7. The Trump era has exposed what was always hiding under the facade of the GOP. They don’t care about the country or people. They care about winning. I’ve watched principled conservatives who decried anytime Obama did an EO act like it’s not big deal that Trump does them now. They simply only care about holding onto power. Look at Lindsey Graham. Look at Turtle. I really hope November 2020 is a reckoning.

  8. We're in London. It's 1940 and we're under an air raid. There are households refusing to douse their lights during the blackout. You want to talk about the soccer season but some people keep bringing up the bombs that are falling all around us. It's annoying, isn't it?

  11. Assuming you actually care about a rational response, here you go. If we actually had rapid and accurate testing ... you could test players with confidence before and after games. Unfortunately we can't even accurately test governors who are in the presence of the president. The kind of thing that competent governments do is respond to pandemics with things like a comprehensive testing plan. With tests you have information, and with information you can act. The experts you denigrate were indeed giving mixed messages back in March, and yes, they made mistakes. But later in the spring, as evidence became clear, there remained ambivalence on masks from some local, state, and federal leaders. It's pretty simple, if the nation had masked up we could help bring R0 below 1.0 across the country. However it's become part of the culture wars, and so instead of controlling the spread of COVID-19 this summer we've seen dramatic increases, particularly in the south. Here's a good overview of how anti-intellectualism, among other things, allowed COVID-19 to bring America to its knees. We probably should have had harsher lockdown for a longer period of time. This, followed by widespread mask usage, likely would have brought the pandemic under control and brought us back to some sense of normalcy by now. Instead we're talking about canceling fall sports and in the middle of some very, very difficult decisions about the extent to which we should open up public schools this fall.

  18. Moving next week so we're playing "eat whatever we can find in the back of the pantry". I managed to replicate the KFC stoner bowl. Instant mash (+garlic, butter, s&p), HEB spicy popcorn chicken, cheese, and brown gravy from a packet. Brings me back to my broke ass bachelor days, but it slams and goes hard.

  20. There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge. - Isaac Asimov.

  24. Shelby had a blood transfusion last week and rebounded to about 90% normal for a few days, but unfortunately started a downhill slide this past week. We took her back to the vet and they did more testing and determined she has renal failure and there is nothing more that can be done. We have her on 6 different medicines that they hope will prolong her life, but it’s basically palliative care at this point. My wife and I both knew this would eventually happen - she’s 12 years old and had a cancer that is considered terminal - but it’s still a gut punch. She’s had surgery, a 12 week course of chemo, and ongoing medical therapy. Her quality of life has been unbelievable throughout this time and my wife is a saint for taking her to every appointment and making sure she never misses a medication dose. We’ve spent the equivalent of a new SUV on her treatment and it was worth every penny, but eventually there is a time when it simply can’t be fixed. Today was a bit tough for us because she was lethargic and just seemed a bit dazed. No signs of pain because we know what to do in that case, just slept a lot and slow to move, definitely not her normal self. The writing is on the wall and that hit us hard. We went out to eat to take our minds off it and came home to find her standing at the back door and wagging her tail, waiting on us to come in. That made me pretty damn happy because I love the way she greets us (her sister, Nora, ignores us) and I thought the days of Shelby greeting at the door were over. Even in her poor health she still misters the strength to welcome us home. Sorry for being a downer, it’s just a shitty process and it helps to externalize it. She’s still a part of our lives but time is short and every moment is increasingly precious.

Canadian bacon, aged chedder, green onions, japs. Hot sauce applied between the cheese and bacon. It slammed; will make again & try with other breffiss meats.

  37. So the program that plays guards at tackle, qb’s at RB, safeties at corner, DE’s at te, and recruits wr’s and safeties that are future lb’s did not offer a potential 5 star that could play probably 3 different positions because their safeties coach is picky and didn’t see him as an offer? 40. I hate the current political climate so badly. One comment on the value of a vote. If you weren't born and raised in the US you may not realize that getting to vote for candidates whether, your chosen ones or another, is not necessarily the case everywhere. So assuming your vote doesn't matter is the equivalent of saying we might as well be China, let the CCP pick our leadership, or any of the Latin American countries in the 80s with their military dictatorships. Voting matters. Choosing not to vote says a lot about a person, mostly not good. It's like one person not wearing a mask, in a lot of ways.

  41. Wulaw made pages 97 and 98 possibly the dumbest pages I’ve ever read on shaggy/surly, and just to add to the pile on, he repeatedly showed he doesn’t even know how to spell masturbation correctly. The irony there considering his mental backflips that justify, I guess it is some kind of nihilism, would be funny if it weren’t so sad and alarming. Guess he’s tooling around America teaching his kids that voting isn’t important and doesn’t matter.

  42. Actually, it’s among the dumbest things I’ve ever read. Here or anywhere else. The cumulative nature of things - votes, floodwaters, straw on camel’s backs - is a real thing. No individual raindrop flooded anyone’s house, ever. Yet if you yelled at and insisted to each of the trillions of raindrops that created the flood that they were meaningless, the flood wave that they cumulatively and collectively formed would wash you away, laughing the whole time. Jesus Christ, seriously, I can’t even figure out how to reason with the stupidity of a statement that “one of something in a system that accumulates that something is meaningless.” The truth is that EACH AND EVERY of those somethings has meaning, because they accumulate. And in every election, there is a single vote that is the vote that puts the winning candidate 1 vote ahead of the opponent....because it comes right after the accumulated votes that put them in a tie. God, I’m dumber for even engaging in this idiocy. What an absolutely moronic fucking tangent.

  43. Tired of hearing about professional athletes talk about how they are sitting out of something due to family reasons, as the rest us of go to work and live on. If it's for medical reasons, that's understandable. But because your cousin's BIL got sick is bullshit. You can afford to sit out, when you are getting 1.5/mil over the next 2 years. If you want to sit out that's fine, just STFU, while the grown folks work and not play games.
