I posted a couple thing in the Watch Fanatics thread, but thought I’d share some info here. My Dad played under Coach Royal from ‘60 to ‘63. He never started a single game, offense or defense, during his four years for UT. Back then most everyone played both ways, but he saw his time on special teams, like KO kick/returns and punts etc. To “letter” back then one had to actually participate in an offense/defense snap or play. It wasn’t until the tail end of the ‘63 season/‘64 Cotton Bowl that my Dad actually played a position on the field! Four years of practicing with others and never participating during the game for an offensive/defensive snap on the field. Every day during his tenure he was on the “scout team” at practice. During his Freshman year to help assist on his “scholarship” tuition money, he waited tables in the athletic dining hall. Imagine practicing with people then hurrying your ass up to get clean, so you can serve those you just practiced with! He suffered almost 50 stitches, mostly to his face/head during his tenure on the 40 acres. Yes - they had face masks back then. He was just the end result of Coach Royal’s practices back then. Coach Royal sent him “in” to play guard with about three minutes left playing Navy his Senior year. It was a position he’d never played, but just to get him on the field for a “snap” or two+. When they had their 40th Reunion (63 National Championship) the night before playing against Arkansas in 2003, they had a banquet for both Arkansas and Texas players with both Coach Royal and Coach Frank Broyals attending. My Dad was asked to be one of three UT players to speak on their behalf. Coach Royal actually attended my parents wedding in 1967.29 points

The 2008 Arkansas game was one of the early games that accumulated the feeling among Longhorn fans that this team might actually be pretty damn great. None of those early opponents were all that good (FAU, UTEP, Arky, Colorado), but our offense seemed to hum along each game racking up points and our defense was pretty stout. Also, that game was the first I attended with my daughter. Here she is in the stands, with a look of pure joy.27 points

Arkansas plans to honor the 7 Arkansans and 16 Texans that lost their lives on 9/11 during the game Saturday. Pretty nice tribute. There will also be a flyover after the national anthem.18 points

Which one of you bastards did this? "Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium is an American football stadium in Fayetteville, Arkansas[7] and serves as the home field of the University of Arkansas Razorbacks football team since its opening in 1938. The stadium was formerly known as Razorback Stadium since 1941 before being renamed in 2001 in honor of Donald W. Reynolds, an American businessman and philanthropist. The playing field in the stadium is named the Frank Broyles Field, honoring former Arkansas head football coach and athletic director Frank Broyles.[8] On September 11, 2021, Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium became the birth place of The University of Texas Longhorns reign over the Southeastern Conference." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_W._Reynolds_Razorback_Stadium18 points

I missed this live, but Joe Cook pointed this out in his gif breakdown. We tried to catch them with some tricky shit in the 2Q. All the skill players stood upright like they were at the play-call on the sideline. Card even gives the no-look snap signal. Didn’t work here but just another example of a smart staff putting little wrinkles in to give us an advantage.17 points

On3’s Jeremy Johnson: Texas crept into the recruitment of Trussville (Ala.) senior defensive lineman Justice Finkley in the late stages. It didn’t keep the 6-foot-2, 260-pound defensive lineman from committing to the Longhorns over Alabama and Colorado on Thursday evening. Despite their March 1 offer, it didn’t take Steve Sarkisian and staff long to charm the 190th ranked player in the On3 top 300for the class of 2022. Finkley took his official visit on June 25. That was where the tide turned in his recruitment. “Texas kind of came a little late in the game, but they were quick to impress me, especially on the official visit,” Finkley said. “I checked out their medical facility, which is the medical school that they built about six years ago. That kind of sold me on the education piece of it.” Finkley knows football will be there. He’s not afraid of competition. The Longhorns have two other edge players committed already in Donaldsonville (Tx.) Ascension Catholic four-star J’Mond Tapp and Texarkana (Tx.) Texas four-star Derrick Brown. The Longhorns also have a commitment from Marlin (Tx.) four-star defensive lineman Jaray Bledsoe, the 69th ranked player in the class of 2022, and Houston (Tx.) North Shore’s Kristopher Ross, the 55th ranked player in the class of 2022. Both Tapp and Brown are top 200 players in the On3 top 300. I know I can come there and ball out on the football field,” Finkley said. “They need defensive ends to come in…. I’m going to go there and handle business and do my thing.” Finkley is the Longhorns’ 21st commit in the class of 2022. SEC football ahead? Texas’ move to the SEC was another factor that pushed the Longhorns to the forefront in the recruitment of Finkley. The story that the Longhorns would leave the Big 12 came down in late July, months after Finkley’s official visit. That news was a bit of a push for Finkley. “Them moving to the SEC, is a turning point for me,” Finkley said. “It’s an add on… That is just going to attract more southern recruits. It’s going to make the program even better.” Finkley has taken a liking to first-year head coach Sarkisian’s plan for the program as well. “The new staff at Texas, I believe in what they’re building over there,” Finkley said. “I like seeing what Sarkisian is about to do with the program.” Academics a non-negotiable for Justice Finkley Finkley is heading to Austin with big on-the-field goals. He has his eyes on some deeply academic feats off the field. Finkley hopes to pursue a career as a neuroplastic surgeon. He’s in the biomedical academy at Hewitt-Trussville. He was hoping to get his EMT license before he left for college, but he won’t be able to because he’s set to enroll in college in January. Finkley began his passion in the medical field with an eye for forensics. He watched CSI and Bones a lot as a youngster. His interest evolved to educating himself about the human brain. When Finkley isn’t watching football film, he watched videos demonstrating brain surgeries. He’s found a way to balance his academic pursuits and athletic feats because it was the standard in his household. “Both of my parents are educators and they both have doctorates in education, so academics is a non-negotiable in my household,” Finkley said. “I don’t have a choice but to balance it. I have to show the same passion I show in football in my academics.”16 points

The absolute best part was Kyrie Eleison thinking they'd be fine on offense because Steve Ensmiger had Joe Brady's playbook and Steve was calling the plays anyways.16 points

He was talked about extensively in Fall Practice, but he doesn't play in one game and you haven't seen him "this Fall." This fall consisting of one game to date. Outstanding thread, really.16 points

This was true before Delta. Out of 10 exposures, 9 unvaccinated will catch it. Also Delta is killing 2-5 out of 100 all comers and it is killing young healthy people with no comorbidities at a completely unacceptable rate. It’s probably 1 in 200 or higher. And 1 in 10 have serious long term sequelae. I had a good friend from high school 49 years old die within the last month. My wife’s best friend from high school lost her husband who was 47 within the past month. All The tertiary hospitals in Dallas Fort Worth are closed for elective procedures and direct admits to the floor because they are full of Covid and 95% of these fuckers are unvaccinated. People are dying of routine, easily treatable medical conditions because they can’t get medical care because of these fucking morons. Do you know what you call people who won’t do something that is in their best interest because someone they don’t like told them to? You call them toddlers. Seriously fuck them and anyone who’s trying to make an argument that we should give a shit about their feelings. Either mandate they get vaccinated or mandate if they get sick they stay the fuck home I really don’t care which at this point15 points

In early 1999, my wife and I found out she was pregnant with twins. We were shopping at Rooster's store and saw a t-shirt that said "Longhorn Under Construction." We took it to the counter to buy it and mentioned that we loved the shirt but it wasn't quite accurate since we had 2 babies in there. Sales clerk said to hang on a second while they went to the back. Apparently Rooster told them to iron-on an "S" after "Longhorn" free of charge. Must have worked, both kids graduate in May. Thanks Rooster, RIP in the great alumni center in the sky.14 points

Fostering is very difficult. It's much more of an emotional sacrifice than a time/monetary one. Think about how much you love and care for your children and how valuable their sibling relationship is to you. Now Imagine that you have no assurance that your children will remain under your care and protection 3 months from now or that you cannot guarantee your children will remain together. That is what fostering is like. We fostered a little girl from right before Kinder to First grade and then her mom got her act together and jumped through the hoops to get back custody. One of the most haunting memories I'll never get over is that little girl telling me she didn't want to leave. About 11 years later I got a phone call from her while I was driving down the highway. I had to pull over because I couldn't stop crying and laughing because she turned out ok and was telling me about her life. She ended up being raised by a grand-aunt in Houston.14 points

Four years ago today I had to put down my best friend of 16 years. Amber was an amazing pal in every way. We kayaked, hiked, camped, traveled, and hunted together for all but the last few months. So damn smart I never had to worry about where she was or what she was doing. Here's to you, Amber. Ill see you at the rainbow Bridge.14 points

Happy to report that a few weeks in, my Alabama Juco Students have settled into a quiet methodical non-flashy adherence to mask and distance protocols. Remarkably little absent-mindedness and zero drama, rather astounding considering more than half are teens. It's not just my classes, the great majority in my building are doing what we asked them to. Today I had a talk about the virus with them where I admitted that, sure, things were inconvenient, and, who knows, in 20 years we'd realize we didn't know everything we could have done, but that I admired how they'd stepped up, and I appreciated it. I don't want to live in a world where I'd have to hunt zombies, but if I did have to hunt zombies, I'd trust this crew to cover my flank.13 points

So one of the guys I fish with a lot does this big annual trip in Port Mansfield with a group of old friends and their sons. The friend that owns the house down there is a Dr, and sent a group text asking if everyone was vaccinated. Two of the guys in the group are Aggie engineers in commercial construction, and neither of them or their kids were vax'd. He told them they would need to wear a mask the whole time they're in the house if they aren't, and they both blew up on him with muh freedom and stupid libtard comments, so he un-invited them to the trip and now there's a big fight within the group and it's probably ended some long term friendships.13 points

Dude. Come on. If a lawyer has told you its not "safe" to join burnt ends on surly horns for any reason, you should invite him on a trip to hawaii for being such a good lawyer, take a helicopter tour, and then push him out into an active volcano for being so mind numbingly stupid and bad at his job.12 points

So this is going to be a long post, but a few thoughts about Sark, this staff, position groups, game performance, and Arky. Sark: I think we hit a home run hire. I was drunk on the Meyer bandwagon and I really didn’t know what to expect with Sark due to him flaming out at USC. This dude is arguably the best QB coach and play caller in college football. How many QBs has he had drafted? NFL scouts trust him. He put on yet again a coaching clinic last week. The 3rd and 4th down plays were perfectly designed and got our best players open. How many times would Herman sub out our best players on critical downs and basically play hero ball with Sam. This team and players are going to love him. He was a successful D1 player so he can relate to these guys. This is an elite coaching staff that we’re in comfortable situations that chose to leave to follow him. Contrast that to Herman who brought a G5 staff and brought in guys like Tim Beck that were basically told to look for other jobs. Just really happy that we have Sark. QB: Card is the real deal. When was the last time we had a qb that was throwing guys open? If this is his floor, he’s going to be the best passer since Colt. Sark recruited and offered Card at Bama. I don’t think he takes this job is Card isn’t on the roster. I fully believe he was going to start Card the minute he got here bc his skill set is perfect for his offense. But he let Card prove himself to the team and didn’t just hand him the job. How do you earn your teams respect and beat out a veteran player that the team likes? You do it by kicking ass with the 2nd team. RB: This is the best RB room in the country. How refreshing was it to see our best player get utilized and put in successful situations. I’m excited to see how we use K. Robinson. That guy has another gear that most defenses aren’t built to defend. WR: If you don’t have speed, you probably need to transfer (looking at you Troy O). Sark has a type and I don’t think he’s going to compromise. There’s a reason a 160lb Freshman WR is starting over everyone else when he showed up just a few weeks ago and didn’t even know the play book. I feel great about Worthy, Whit, and Moore. OL: Work in progress. I’m optimistic. We ran the ball pretty well against a veteran well coached defense. Obviously we need work, but I trust these coaches to scheme around the OL and they will scheme plays to their strengths. How refreshing is that compared to the idiots we had under the last 2 regimes. DEFENSE: PK and these boys completely punked the ragin Cajuns. Napier is a damn good coach. We contained a mobile quarterback, did not let them convert 3rd downs, and shut down their running game. When was the last time we could say that? Special teams: the Pat block followed by anticipating the onside kick. Wow…. For the last decade, these coaches couldn’t even teach the players when to fair catch. Very impressed with Banks. Game thoughts: Herman would talk about making teams tap out but he had no idea how to do it. Let this sink in… Napier had to go for an onside kick in the 2nd quarter bc his defense was gassed and we were dominating the time of possession. This is the first game in 7 years that I felt we were prepared in all 3 phases. This is also the first time in 4 years our back ups got meaningful snaps to build depth. Until the Alamo bowl against CU, Herman never could even get his backup QB in for meaningful snaps bc every fucking game was in doubt regardless of competition. How nice was it to see Casey run our offense in the 3rd quarter while we were up 2+ scores. Arky: This has to be a statement game and Sark and company know it. You don’t think recruits will compare our performance to Arky with aggy/LSU? It’s going to be a hostile environment. With that said, I’m not sure Arky has a player on their roster that would start over any of our guys outside of Catalon. Their QB is Tyrone Swooped. He can’t throw for shit. To take the crowd out of the game… I expect us to lean heavily on our RBs, control time of possession, and utilize the exact same game plan on defense. They will focus on stopping Arkys run game and ask our DEs to hold the edges and keep their QB in the pocket. We’re going to force them to beat us with their passing game while we ask our DBs to keep everything in front of them. I think this game is going to look very similar to our first game from a game plan stand point and I expect a similar score as well. I’m going with 34-20. Hook em boys. Sorry for the long post but I feel really good about our program, something I haven’t felt since 2008 to be honest.11 points

JFC, do you dickheads not read the whole thread?
