Here are the facts: Most expected the recruitment of Anthony Hill to be a long, drawn out process between Texas, Texas A&M, and OU aggy hosts its annual pool party in July, an event that even aggy message board posters insinuate is where bags are dropped Anthony Hill visits College Station for this event, immediately meets with Jimbo Fisher, and commits about 5 minutes later aggy completely falls apart, losing 6 games in a row. Hill visits for one of those losses, and by all accounts has a miserable time and is encouraged to look elsewhere by current players on the team Hill immediately decommits Almost the entire LB room decides to leave, seemingly confirming the rumors of an unhappy locker room Meanwhile, the Texas LB room shows incredible improvement, including an afterthought recruit turning into a bonafide star Hill commits to Texas Imagine the mental gymnastics required to look at this timeline and conclude that aggy is really where he wants to be, but he is being dragged against his will to Austin.47 points

The Akana family- *Keonilei Akana left Nebraska in the dust and transferred to Texas. After making the national title match the year before at Nebraska. *She then helped Texas win a national title in volleyball and her service ace was the final point in the national championship match. *Tausili Akana then led OU on in recruiting and signed with Texas. This family is really trying to get a building named after them.39 points

JFC we just signed a top WR prospect and you people are clutching your pearls over his 100m time, Neyor’s injury, and the WR room in general. Can’t you surly bastards enjoy the fucking moment? For fuck’s sake.27 points

They're all eventually going to realize that there are key roles on the business development and brand experience side that need focused, experienced personnel owning these responsibilities. There isn't currently someone on the Texas One Fund side working to cut deals with corporate entities in order to showcase players for NIL. Some of that has popped up. Some corporate have gone directly to players. Agents for big time players have helped (Bijan's team helped him maximize his NIL opps to close to $3M). It's a known gap in the growing machine on UT NIL's end. I don't know if it is even recognized anywhere outside of Oregon, us, and probably USC and Miami (corporate in both regions have been actively trying to work with their programs since last July). The good news is, most places won't be able to do much about the corporate side of NIL unless they are consistently nationally relevant. Take Bama at the moment. Big corporate is all over their stars, but what happens when they're wandering in the wilderness? Not much native corporate for them during the darker times. We have belabored the Oregon situation regarding NIL since literally the dawn of NIL. They have huge advantages engineered through one massively wealthy and connected alum. They have all the money they could ever need and they have an all star team running their NIL machine from one of the biggest marketing and brand-building giants the world has ever known. The only disadvantages they have are 1) you can't move Eugene somewhere else and 2) they may wind up in the Mountain West. If a player is only about the money and building his brand, Oregon is the best choice on the map, rivaled only by Texas, USC, maybe Miami, UNC, Ohio State, UCLA, Georgia and whoever else is running boss over the sport at any given time. Until further notice, the biggest force in NIL will remain Oregon. And Knight is allegedly leaving Oregon athletics something around $1B when he's gone. That's a rumor, but I see no evidence to discount it. Frankly, I find it best to just ignore Oregon. If we go head up with them on someone, it's not like we can't win it, but it's going to depend upon that person's key driver - if it is money, only Oregon lacks a limit for any recruit. For those who have wondered, Knight, his team, and Texas NIL aren't enemies currently, and Nike views the UT brand as a pillar brand for them in college sports. I don't expect to butt heads as much with them as some other schools will. We'll see. The work on the mega $$$ alums continues in earnest and there have have been multiple entities participating at mid-6 figures upward who will continue to do so. More is needed. Just like more crowdfunding is always needed. But a lot of BMDs have stepped up or have soft circled that they will. Invention is ludicrously hard and building everything from the ground up that didn't previously exist takes time, patience, vision, courage, money, and institutional support. Those ingredients are all in Texas NIL's favor as much as anyone's right now.27 points

I know we're still hanging around the rim with some guys, but we've got NSD in the books and 22 signees (plus 2 transfers so far). Let's take stock of what we got, starting with the offense. QB - Arch Manning Misses - Don't care, got Arch. Best player on the board at the most important position in football. I haven't watched film on the other top QBs in this cycle to know what we're missing out on because I don't care. Arch is fantastic prospect and he would deserve his ranking if his name was Archquavious Jones. RB - Cedric Baxter, Tre Wisner Misses - Rueben Owens I love Cedric's film and I love that we pulled him out of Florida. Dude is a power runner with top end speed and some nice shake for his size. I can't believe there are recruiting services who don't think he's the best running back in the country. Tre Wisner is a nice complementary piece with a lot of versatility. Owens would have been an even better lightning to Baxter's thunder, but he also seemed like a headcase who didn't want to share carries or the spotlight. If I had to choose between Owens and Baxter, I take Baxter every time. WR - Johntay Cook, Ryan Niblett Misses - Jalen Hale, Jaquaize Petteway, Jaden Greathouse, DeAndre Moore (maybe?), Ja'Kobi Lane (maybe?) I'm excited about Johntay Cook and think he's one of the very few guys who could contribute as a true freshman depending on how the WR room develops in the offseason. He's a polished route runner, has great speed, and his film shows solid hands. Niblett is a super athletic project who has all the tools to become a great slot receiver. Two great recruiting wins against some very stiff competition. The problem is both Cook and Niblett are under 6 feet and neither shows much of an ability to win contested balls on film. Enter Jalen Hale. Go watch his junior season highlights: Jalen Hale - Longview - 2021 Junior Season Highlights (247sports.com). Nearly every catch is him adjusting to poorly thrown balls, high-pointing, and fighting for the catch. It's a skill that is woefully missing from this recruiting class and the WR room on campus right now. Hale would have been the perfect player to round out this WR class and, in my opinion, is the worst miss of the cycle. We really could have used him. Jaden Greathouse is a really well-rounded player, good routes, good hands, good size, decent speed, and has a lot of nasty blocks on film. I'm not gonna dickride him like I did Hale, but I like his game and wish we would have made him more of a priority. Petteway is a good player, but between Cook and Niblett I think we have his skillset covered in the class. I'm happy with who we got, but I think the misses really hurt here. Maybe we can make up for it with Moore or Lane, but neither of those guys is bringing what Hale has to the table. TE - Spencer Shannon, Will Randle Misses - Duce Robinson (maybe?), Ka'Morreun Pimpton Spencer Shannon's film shows a technically competent blocker with a great frame for physical development. And he caught a few balls on slant routes for like 40 yards. Hopefully he eventually wins the Geoff Swaim Memorial Extra Blocking Surface Award for providing outstanding value to the team that no one cares about. Will Randle only makes sense to me as a take if he was necessary to secure Arch Manning. If we just needed a guy with Will Randle's skillset, there are 10 dudes as good or better than him in Texas every year. Pimpton and Robinson would have been nice additions, but I'm not losing sleep over either of them. I would have been perfectly happy with Shannon as the only TE take this cycle. OL - Jaydon Chatman, Trevor Goosby, Payton Kirkland, Connor Stroh, Andre Cojoe Chatman is an excellent player that's a solid take in any class. Trevor Goosby is a lean, athletic player with a great frame that has the skillset to play outside. His upside is Connor Williams/Sam Cosmi. His downside is the fact that we have to hope he becomes that level of player instead of already being that level of player. Payton Kirkland is a massive human being that plays as tough as he looks, but I'm not sure he has the feet to play tackle at the college level. Compare Kirkland's tape to Kelvin Bank's senior season: SENIOR SZN HIGHLIGHTS - Kelvin Banks jr highlights - Hudl. 00:35, 3:10, and 4:40 show some beautiful pass protection and at 1:03 there is a literal murder caught on film. Now, I know we can't expect everyone to be Kelvin Banks, but I think the comparison is useful to see Kirkland's shortcomings so far. There's not a whole lot of tape on Kirkland pulling, getting to the second level, finding guys in space, or stonewalling in pass protection. He's just lining up and mauling dudes half his size. Maybe we see more of his game in senior season tape but it's not on HUDL so I haven't seen it. I love Connor Stroh's senior highlights: 2022 Senior Season Highlights - Connor Stroh highlights - Hudl. He's consistently finding guys in space and at the second level to block. There's also some nice pass protection moments in there at 2:39 and 5:45. He's still got a long way to go regarding footwork and technique but I could see him taking the Christian Jones developmental path. Andre Cojoe is a poor man's Payton Kirkland and he's carrying a lot of bad weight in his senior tape. You need a lot of faith in Kyle Flood to see Cojoe as a take. Honestly, this is a bit of a disappointing haul. There are excuses: 2023 was clearly a down year for offensive linemen in Texas, the 2022 OL class was so good that it scared off elite linemen who wanted quick playing time, the coaches were looking for developmental guys to sit behind the 2022 OLs, etc. I also can't recall us "missing" on anyone as the coaching staff locked the OL guys down pretty quickly and seemed to focus on other areas. I wish we had made finding a surefire offensive tackle more of a priority, even considering last year's class. We're a few key injuries/portal entries away from the dark times again, we need to keep the cupboard as stocked as possible. Overall Thoughts on the 2023 Offensive Class Listen, we got the number 1 recruit/top QB in the class, top RB in the class, the best WR in Texas, and a lot of useful toys to go along with them. Could I piss and moan about the WRs we didn't get or that the OL class isn't loaded with five stars? Sure. And I kinda did already. But this is still a really good class and, when viewed in context with the 2022 class, addressed our roster needs very well.26 points

I wouldn't count on it unless we have a really good year and it's clear we're the best chance the SECSEC has of bringing it all home..then, and ONLY maybe then we'll get a few favorable calls. We don't need favorable calls. We just need evenly called games. In the SEC, unless you're playing against Alabama or maybe Georgia for the time being, then calls aren't going to go deliberately against you. Because the SEC doesn't care at all about fixing games outside of their preferred contenders. And that's all we're asking-- if we can simply stop being negatively targeted for lopsided officiating simply because we're Texas and the local B12 refs can't stand that arrogant wealthy school in Austin, we'll be in much better shape. Sure the calls will go against us when we're playing Alabama or Georgia, but the couple of times per decade that actually ends up happening in the regular season, are a far cry from the weekly screw-job we endure in the B12. The ags and other haters are constantly warning us that we won't be treated differently in the SEC, we'll just be one of the gang. But they don't understand that such treatment will be a welcome change from all of the shenanigans and bullshittery that currently plays out against us in the B12.25 points

Putin has spent decades shaping Russian institutions— government and otherwise— and that doesn’t go away overnight. The deeper problem is that Russian state power has for centuries viewed Russia as an imperial power and Russia itself as too big, too diverse, too unruly to govern by any method other than authoritarian rule. And historically, periods of Russian state weakness have been accompanied by massive social upheaval, war, and famine. As long as Russia’s governing elites maintain this conception, the “Russia problem” will not go away for Russia’s neighbors. If the U.S. has stumbled “making the world safe for democracy,” then for centuries Russia has been trying to make the world safe for autocracy. Any flicker of human protest against autocratic governance in what Russia views as its sphere of influence is treated as a threat to Russia itself. This is why pointing the finger at NATO or the U.S. rings so hollow. For Russia, invading a nearby state that is experimenting with democratic or liberal ideas is the natural state of affairs. Nothing could be more intuitive for generations of Russians. They did it in Georgia and Ukraine. They did it to Czechoslovakia and Hungary. They did it to Poland several times in the 18th and 19th centuries. They did it to Hungary and Romania in 1848 (this was the most explicit formulation of Russian autocratic promotion). Until Russia reforms its image of itself as a polity based on consent and not force, the neighborhood will be dangerous for any country that attempts a different model. Russia is perfectly capable of quarreling with other autocracies of interests collide, but the simple existence of successful non-autocratic nations is viewed as a threat to Russian interests.15 points

Fantastic post. For some of our fellow Americans who still willingly seem to not get it, the problem with Russia was never "communism," per se. In fact, we bit way too hard on that in the red scare days. The problem with Russia is.....Russia gonna Russia. It has a large enough geographic presence that it can and will be the turd in both the Asian and European punch bowl, going out and doing Russia stuff. Russia's strategy is never to make Russia great. It is to create parity by weakening everyone else down to Russia's level, and colonizing adjacent territories to create buffers. That approach is literally centuries-old, and has been deployed while Russia has been 1) a monarchy, 2) "communist," and 3) a fascist kleptocracy. Through it all, Russia has Russia'd. I have little hope of Russia ever changing its ways. So, instead... ...this. We can't make Russia a non-nuclear power. It will continue to saber-rattle with nukes, no matter what anyone does. But we CAN destroy its ability to be much of a turd in the punch bowl. We need to take this opportunity to, as completely as possible, destroy their conventional military. THEN, to fortify the shit out of fortress Europe (yeah, we naively thought that era was over....think again. If you don't get EVERY cancer cell, the cancer WILL grow back.) Keep Russia in its cage. Oh, and that also means electronically. Their cyberwarfare and interference in Western affairs needs to be treated like the hostile military action that it is. If the Russia people ever decide to have a functional state that can participate in world affairs and not smear shit on the walls, cool. Don't hold your breath waiting.14 points

Here's what these idiots have failed to realize, and it's obvious up to the HC level. Yes, you are going to have to recruit your current roster. You're going to have to pay the stars every year on new terms. You can also taper on guys that don't get it done. If you're going to do it really well, you need endlessly deep pockets from multiple boosters, and crowdfunding capabilities that enable forever subscriptions, and then you're also going to need serious corporate depth for the truly elite guys that you will have to both attract and retain in order to compete for the playoffs. They still don't get this. "Good luck when he asks for more money next year!" Uh, yeah, we hope that is the case, because that means he's damned good and showing out as a freshman. Also, the players know this. Texas is managing the NIL side of things in the locker room just about as well as anyone, by all accounts. This is something that the coaching staff's approach to the players lends itself well to under Sarkisian. It's going to be harder for the hardasses to handle. Saban has built himself a solid support team to insulate his approach with the Gen-Zs. We'll see how it goes for Kelly. It will be fucking easy for Harbaugh and Swinney. Fisher? Well, again, he's a simple idiot and innovation is the kind of the thing that is going to run guys like him, of his age, over. It's already happening. These guys are so completely disconnected from reality at this point that someone should commission a study on the fanbase and compare it to what happened with The Seekers and Sister Thedra in 1950's Chicago. They're so completely committed to Fisher being the guy and taking them to the promised land that they cannot possibly abandon the attachment to him without risking a psychotic break. We're looking at some whacko shit here.14 points

I can only speak for the Dallas Texas Exes, but we have raised millions for scholarships. The chapter has funded three Forty Acre Scholars, which provides a full ride based on academics, stemming the flow of top students in Texas going to schools like Duke. Additionally the chapter has given out countless need-based scholarships. I believe Houston has done pretty much the same. Smaller chapters do what they can, providing need-based scholarships to local students.12 points

I see CTJ already touched on it, but yes, everything we've heard is that Sark has managed the locker room pretty damn fucking well in the NIL world. Some of that is communication, some of that is culture, some of that is recruiting the right guys to that culture, and them helping sustain it...Long story short, the players are happy to get support, and they understand that not everyone is going to get paid like Bijan or Ewers, and they're generally fine with that shit. It's also a huge fucking difference between just dropping massive bags to a player and promising them a payout for signing, as opposed to legitimate NIL deals on top of general player support. Players see and understand the difference, for the most part. aTm still doesn't even understand how NIL is supposed to work. That's a fucking problem, for them at least, and we are all fucking here for it.12 points

RGBIII already answered the Texas question. I don’t think Oregon is that far off of 1 either, simply because they don’t have to be. Lanning was part of the bag machine at Georgia so I’m sure yesterday’s chicanery boiled down to some good old fashioned baggage handling, but it’s mostly unnecessary now. They have Knight’s full financial backing. They can wink and nod about what someone gets on campus and then load them up and keep them. They’re off of 1 mostly because they choose to be, not because they have to be. ATM is at a 10 and they may be the only team there. We talked to an official elsewhere about their bullshit and that person said “all they’re doing is money laundering and then claiming that everyone else is too”. They haven’t adjusted to legit NIL and the aggie staff is fully involved with paying players for playing. It’s somewhat phenomenal to witness. Legit NIL is rapidly in ascent and these goobers are doing donuts in the school parking lot in their brand new ‘85 trans am, hollering “whoop!!” as the tires squeal and $1 bills spill out in front of the sophomores. Miami is backed by a true slime ball in Ruiz, but they’re allegedly somewhat compliant. Miami has too many native competitive advantages with NIL for them not to figure it out better than most. The only things working against them is a stadium situation that is laughable, a fanbase that doesn’t really exist, and a coaching staff whose core talent was being able to buy players when others viewed it as illegal.12 points

Gaetz, MTG, Boebert, Tucker, Gohmert, etc. simply sympathize with Russia and Vladimir Putin more than they do with Ukraine’s efforts to democratize and join Europe (which they hate). Putin isn’t accountable in elections, uses state power to harm his political opponents, pretends to advocate for family and traditional values, persecutes sexual minorities, has trashed civic society and the free press, and runs an effective propaganda machine. He’s exactly what they support in a leader and they would like the U.S. to look more like Russia. It’s not acceptable to say you hope he wins out loud anymore so instead they play this little game where they don’t like Putin but they don’t like Zelenskyy even worse.11 points
