  1. Thanks for asking! TLDR. I've read all 1200+ pages of this thread, so I'm going off on a tangent... I'm an Air Force Brat, born at Bergstrom. My dad was from Pflugerville and was a jet engine mechanic in the Air Force (Shepard, Chanute, Bergstrom x 3, Clark, Holloman, Eglin, Taiwan, Andrews). I got to see really cool stuff growing up; everything that flew, B-52's rolling off the runway one after the other, sonic booms, 20 mm Vulcan cannon obliterate an old ambulance, C-130 touch-n-go dropping off a cargo, napalm bombing and strafing runs at night, Thunder Birds/Blue Angels every year. At Eglin, the Navy would coat target docks w/ napalm, and tow them to the Gulf for target practice; we used to fish off the target docks, sometime w/ the dried napalm on 'em; good thing we weren't a bunch of fire bugs. Pretty sure he worked on AF-1; he was able to get a "jump" on the weekly shuttle between Andrews & Bergstrom, meet us for lunch, back & forth the same day. I went to school w/ the kids whose dad flew Air Force 1 for LBJ. Clark Air Base, Philippines - American Day, ~ 1959-60; Notice the ladies in dresses and heels. Armed Forces Days during the 60's was quite the show case of military might. I'm the kid in shorts on the right. Philipine Air Force, F-86 Sabre Republic of Korea Air Force, F-86 Sabre F-84 Thunderjet, not sure what country USAF F-100 Super Sabre USAF - F-101 Voodoo USAF F-102 Delta Dagger USAF B-47 Stratojet USAF - TM-76 Mace B USAF Thunderbirds - F-100 Super Sabre (my favorite). Notice the locals. USAF Thunderbirds, F-100, high speed chriscrossing on the deck. Kudo's to pop, snapping the pic as they crossed. House #2 at Clark AB. These were Army barracks during WWII/Korea; we had the whole house. Our front yard at Eglin AFB ('62-'66) looking at Choctawhatchee Bay 7 miles across the bay from Destin. Dad was interviewed for the Popular Mechanics article, "Career School for Jet Mechanics" in Feb '52. Dad highlighted.

  2. Ahh, yes, that 1 thing you can think of and then run with it for the rest of your life. If you think Biden is a racist, then you should also (and always) follow it up with "but trump, desantis, haley, 90% of fox news, cruz, ron johnson, 98% of the white radical republicans currently in congress today, well they are ALSO racist but I support them." Why don't you say that too? You're telling me not to question your blackness when that's exactly what you're doing to me. Do you have a problem with the radical republican party doing voter suppression in Black areas of the country? Do you have a problem with trump saying that any votes coming out of the city of Philly are fraudulent (Philly being a mostly minority/Black city)? Do you have a problem with how your republican party is treating Harris County? What about the Black woman who got 5 years in prison for mistakenly voting yet those White people who did the same got a slap on the wrist? What about desantis sending felons (mostly Black) back to jail for voting when they were explciitly told they were cleared to vote? What about the Proud Boys (a White Nationalists group) who got told to stand back and stand by by trump? You support that? So racist shit comes out of the mouths of the very radical republican party and congresspeople that you support and vote for and you're telling me you're okay with that? You're not going to hold a grudge against them like you do for Biden apparently? No sir, I'm not a "soft serve negro" or whatever the fuck term you and Candiace Ownes have decided to call Blacks who actually understand what the racist radical republicans are doing and you're okay with it. If anything, that would be you, Candiace, and Tim "LET ME LICK YA BOOTS, SUH" Scott. I've told this story before--I was almost a republican growing up in Gainesville. I was super close to being a page to the 2000 RNC thanks to one of my friends in high school. Then I had a talk with my grandmother at the time (her prime was in the 60s) and holy shit, that woke me up. But I say that to say this--I don't know what trauma you went through (and byron donalds and others) to become friends with the radical right. Maybe you were told you talked "too White" like I was told by other Blacks? Maybe you liked other extracurriculars that other Blacks didn't typically like like I did (I was an athlete but also did fucking speech and debate and other UIL activities). Maybe you just liked fishing rather than playing the playstation. Whatever it is, that's fine. But to sit there and act like 1 situation from 30 years ago means the current president is a racist AND YOUR PART IS NOT just further lets me know what current Republicans are and always have been--fucking hypocrites.

  3. I actually really love this pickup and here’s why. - First, he was the top guy out of the state of Mass in 2017. The overall number one. And when you look at the 50 United States, no one can deny that Massachusetts is one of them. - More on Massachusetts and football. Most people hear Mass and think “Boston,” but there’s other places there too. Cape Cod. Nantucket. Worchester, I’m pretty sure. Wooster? Anyway, also a little place called Foxboro. Just where the greatest football player of all time won most of his Super Bowl rings with the greatest dynasty, the New England Patriots. And Massachusetts is really the important part of New England, even if you count Connecticut. - South Boston and those fishing towns are tough, no-nonsense blue collar areas. You grow up hard and learn not to take shit from anyone. But Massachusetts is also home to some of the best educational institutions in this country. So we’re either getting a scrappy, hard-nosed, carry your lunch pail to work brawler, or a cerebral line general who will be quick to pick up on the nuances of Jimbo’s scheme. - His coach at BC happened to be one Steve Addazio. So we aren’t getting an unknown, our OL coach has already seen something in him. He’s seen a guy who was able to appear in four games in 2019. Proven quantity. - Let’s talk about size. This is a guard who goes 6-4, 320. Anyone who follows this game will tell you— 6’4, 320 is a size for many guards. - I knew we had to make some big portal moves coming off last year. And this is literally a portal move, he came through the portal. And he’s big, when you look at players in the portal, he’s for sure on the bigger side. Big portal move. Just one more piece of the puzzle.

  6. Once again, I don’t know what “soft-serve” means. You just completely made it up. Otherwise, you yourself are a “soft-serve negro” who pulls the lever for people who tell you who they are when it comes to minorities. You, a minority, don’t seem to give a shit. That’s your life. It’s odd to me that you, a Black man, get a kick out of telling other Blacks who are Dems that they “serve the same massa” or are “soft-serve negroes” when that’s exactly the same thing that can be said about you and how your party views you. Do you not understand this? Or maybe you do and you just don’t care. Or maybe you’re the “I’m a black republican and other blacks who aren’t republican are beneath me and are ghetto and I don’t want to be associated with that trash” type Black radical R? (Which, for those wondering, that type of mentality, the “don’t think of me as that trash minority I’m different” is what some Blacks and Latinos on the R view as their justification for being part of the radical r’s.) You haven’t said you’re against voter suppression happening in Black/Latin areas of the country. You haven’t said you’re against book banning that ya boy Desantis (who is bought and paid for by DeVos) is doing regarding gay books at the high school level. It’s high school—they are old enough to have a job but not old enough to read about who they are as a person? Fuck outta here with that shit. You haven’t said anything about people in your party who think trump is currently the real president and Biden is being propped up by AI and robots. Not a word about calling Black votes/voters fraudulent when their votes are 100% legal in every facet. You don’t give a shit about your party weaponizing a theory to say that anything diversity should be marked as illegal. There hasnt’ been a peep out of you when Dems win legitimate elections and because radical r’s keep losing, they start closing polling places, have presidential platforms saying you can only vote starting at age 25, and have plans to close polling places on college campus. So tell me, who’s the “soft-serve negro” again? I wrote the original post myself, without coffee by the way. I don’t need you to qualify your thoughts. Your “soft-serve” ass already did that based on your immediate belief that 1 thing that happened 30 years ago (which you clearly didn’t rEaD tHe BiLL) means Biden is a racist now and any Black person (well 87% of the Black electorate) are now “soft serve negros.” I can’t speak for other Black deans, but I’m not yapping up any and everything Joe or D’s have said. I’ve criticized them plenty both on this website and on Shaggy. What I haven’t done, though, is support a politician and radical party that calls Black politicians “aggressive” (which is a trope that gets Black men killed and has been for centuries), I haven’t supported a radical party that allows its members to speak at white nationalist events without repercussions, I haven’t supported a radical party that openly and explicitly states diversity is bad and is discriminatory against Whites. I’m not sure what you’re angry about. You’re definitely showing based on your posting that you have something internally you need to talk through. If it helps to talk with your radical republican friends, go do that. But what I suggest you stop doing is believing that Biden is some huge racist for something 30 years ago when the very recpublican politicans you support are being racist now—today—openly—through their votes, policies, and rhetoric and YOU SUPPORT THAT. You need to own up to it or you’re just confirming you’re like all the other radical republicans—a fucking hypocrite.

  8. There’s nothing inherently wrong with pondering the likelihood of a war that eventually exhausts itself kinetically and that leaves huge unresolved questions. Putin has shown a penchant for freezing conflicts and Ukraine and a Russia are not going to have endless will or ability to engage in heavy combat. This is why upcoming months are so important to set the stage. It’s the framing of it as a stalemate or some kind of partial win for Putin/defeat for Allies that is obtuse. The facts are that Russia achieved almost none of their stated aims, they have wrecked their military for easily a decade to come, they have been isolated from prior preferred economic and trade partners, and they have become more dependent on a smaller set of “Allies.” They’ve paid a tremendously heavy price for basically Mariupol and some coastal real estate and likely would not have launched the war in hindsight. Ukraine had paid a dear cost in treasure and blood and if it hopes to recover, is dependent on massive investment from Western partners (likely) and serious internal reforms (there’s a path but uncertain). The people they lost in a nation that was shrinking before the war cannot be replaced and they can only hope to lure refugees home. Their future stability will also depend on what sort of security guarantees and framework Western Allies are willing to give, which is hard to predict so long as the East and Crimea remain unresolved. Internally— I can guarantee that Ukrainians are discussing the realities and complexities of actually reintegrating the East/Crimea even if they do win. These are not the same regions they lost in 2014. Not the same people. Ukraine has been absent for almost nine years and the population is deeply scarred. There will be hard discussions about how much they REALLY want to push to have them back, especially as Russia has and will try to insert poison pill demands as part of any peace concessions. And at this point, it will be hard for Russia to climb down from the stance that “they’re Russia, we annexed them.” So yes, it’s hard to see a clear “winner” emerging. The goal is to get Ukraine into the most favorable position possible and to dictate as much as they can the terms of any peace— once they decide that they’re ready for it and that there’s nothing more to be gained by fighting it out. On our side, this is not a real burden and we are capable of doing even much more without really breaking a sweat which is why it’s so disingenuous to play political games around it.

  11. Really, this is what the F-16 was made for. If you have a limited number of pilots, and limited maintenance resources, a need to have a lot of planes in the air at short notice, and a lot of missiles, this is the airframe you want. I’m kind of excited the bird is finally getting to do what it was made for- fighting MiGs in an extended conflict.
    12 points
  12. The F-16 looks really sleek and cool at the air shows and when you build models. That’s not what sells the airplane. The pic below shows what sells it- the ordnance it carries. (Did I mention its record in aerial combat? 71-0. Not bad for an “affordable” fighter. Come on, Ukraine. We’re counting on you to take us to triple digits). Also, it suits Ukraine because, as a single engine/single pilot aircraft, every single engine maintained and operational is a fighter in the sky. That’s important when lots of missions are being flown.

  17. TLDR: Everybody tolerated Putin quite a bit as long as he kept things close, and didn't fuck with other countries' energy and food supplies - he was the noisy dog in the neighbor's backyard that you hated, but as long as he wasn't in your yard, you didn't care. Now he's gotten out of the neighbor's backyard, and and he's running around in the street and sidewalk in front of your house, it's clear he's rabid and even if he's not actually in your front yard, you can't avoid the fact that has to be put down, because he's made it clear he will come into your front yard at some point.

Brothahorn is always good for a laugh because he loves to bring up Biden and Byrd all the while ignoring things like the Southern Strategy, the War on Drugs, crack-cocaine disparity in sentencing and a whole swath of things his beloved GOP has done to make the lives of black people harder. Oh wait, next he'll go with the independent thinker line and how he's not a GOP voter every election. Biden hated black people so much that he served as the VP for the first black President for 8 years, nominated the first black female Justice, and selected a black woman as his VP.

They had hoped to transfer him out of the ICU but his BP remains too low to risk it and for the lesser amount of dialysis required for that step down. His internal bleed, something we were terrified of, seems not to have returned. Keep in mind that none of this changes the fact that his liver is completely and permanently damaged. He's in some pain as he has extremely limited mobility, but is keeping his good humor. I will be visiting him tomorrow --have not seen John since last Friday b/c.... Covid. I and others impacted are much better and he is apparently asymptomatic. _________ So, there you have it.

  26. With a fuckin slingshot! Michigan boy who used slingshot to save sister says he 'was just lucky' Alpena Township, Mich. — A 13-year-old Michigan boy who used a slingshot to save his 8-year-old sister from an attempted kidnapping said he was “freaking out” and simply reached for something that could stop the attack. "So I grab my slingshot and open the window and I grab two things — a marble and a gravel rock or something,” Owen Burns told WWTV/WWUP-TV in Cadillac in northern Michigan. Police said Owen struck the 17-year-old assailant in the head and chest, and his sister was able to get away. “I was just lucky. He’s just a big target because he’s not like one Pepsi can,” Owen said. The attempted kidnapping occurred on May 10 outside the family's home in Alpena Township. Owen's sister was outside looking for mushrooms. "I say, ‘OK, be careful.' … And then, boom, something happens,” he recalled. Owen heard a scream while playing video games but figured his sister was just "messing around” with friends. A second scream alarmed him. “So I looked out the window and saw her being abducted by a person and I’m like freaking out,” Owen said. That's when he grabbed his slingshot. Police caught the suspect and said he had visible wounds. The teen has been charged with attempted kidnapping and other crimes. State police 1st Lt. John Grimshaw said Owen's actions were “extraordinary.” He said the boy saved his sister's life or at least prevented “something seriously bad happening to her.” Owen said he had to act. “If I wasn’t out there and I didn’t hear her scream, then she was gone," he said.

  30. (Imma talk about politics, but don't freak out in a CR way.) I think Putin is subject to some bad luck politically. The visible cozying up with Russia from the prior administration primed those that hate the prior administration to pay attention to this more this time. There is a lot of subtext going on at Congress on this issue to this day. In 2014 the average American, and the above average American, couldn't tell you about Russia going into Crimea, and if they could, they couldn't form a coherent opinion about it. The present administration did a very good job (frankly, the most standout thing the present admin has done) in doing a play-by-play of what Putin was about to do, what he was doing, all the way up to rolling tanks about the border, in such a way that fault for this war is very clear in everyone's minds. It was done in a way that leveraged the distaste of the prior administration into actual support of Ukraine that lasts to this day.

  31. If Putin were on a game show, and had won say a $50,000 prize, and it was sitting there in his hands, but the host offers him a chance at a $100,000 prize, but the odds are extremely slim, and he already had the $50,000 check just waiting to be cashed.... Putin just says "fuck it, let's go for it!" It then results in the sad horns playing and him walking away with a bag of groceries and a fancy food processor as a consolation prize. Or a toilet in this case, since he's Russian.
