  1. He went to Turkey, and he extracted from Erdogan a statement that Ukraine deserves to be in NATO (careful words as that isn’t a promise to support their bid now). But, a great start. Also the Nazi who is also a Christian hating Jew destroying the Orthodox Church went to a prayer service with the Ecumenical Patriarch. Zelenskyy needed to be back for the 500 day mark. I need to say that his entire turn from smacking Bulgeria’s pro-Russian president to praise for Czech and Slovaks to flattery and prayer in Istanbul then to Snake Island is a master class in diplomacy and public communications and influence.

  3. We welcome the decision of the US to provide Ukraine with the new liberation weapons that will significantly help us to de-occupy our territories while saving the lives of the Ukrainian soldiers. Under Article 51 of the UN Charter Ukraine has a universal internationally recognised right to self-defence and thus we have been officially requesting these types of munitions for a long time. I would like to stress that in exercising our inalienable right to self-defence we will continue to strictly comply with all the international humanitarian conventions signed and ratified by Ukraine. It is important to note that the russian federation has been indiscriminately using cluster munitions from day 1 of the unprovoked large-scale aggression. In February-March 2022 Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city with over a million population, was relentlessly bombarded by russians cluster munitions. Our position is simple - we need to liberate our temporarily occupied territories and save the lives of our people. For this we need to inflict losses on the enemy - war criminals, rapists and looters - who are occupying our territories. The more losses we inflict on them the more lives of Ukrainian people we will be able to save. It is in our interest to save the lives of our soldiers. This is why we will continue to do this using all lethal weapons available to us. Regarding the cluster munitions, we have 5 key principles which we will abide by and which we have clearly communicated to all our partners, including the US. I have personally informed our US partners about these five principles in writing a long time ago. 1. Ukraine will use these munitions only for the de-occupation of our internationally recognised territories. These munitions will not be used on the officially recognized territory of russia. 2. We will not be using cluster munitions in urban areas (cities) to avoid the risks for the civilian populations - these are our people, they are Ukrainians we have a duty to protect. Cluster munitions will be used only in the fields where there is a concentration of russian military. They will be used to break through the enemy defence lines with minimum risk for the lives of our soldiers. Saving the lives of our troops, even during extremely difficult offensive operations, remains our top priority. 3. Ukraine will keep a strict record of the use of these weapons and the local zones where they will be used. 4. Based on these records, after the de-occupation of our territories and our victory these territories will be prioritised for the purposes of de-mining. This will enable us to eradicate the risk from the unexploded elements of cluster munitions. The Minister of Defence of Ukraine is by law acting as the Head of the national de-mining agency. In this capacity I will ensure the implementation of the relevant legal framework for the de-mining process after our victory. 5. We will report to our partners about the use of these munitions, and about their efficiency to ensure the appropriate standard of transparent reporting and control. https://www.defense.gov/News/Releases/Release/Article/3451570/biden-administration-announces-additional-security-assistance-for-ukraine/

The Balts are such a great example of how people and nations written off as hopelessly backward grabbed hold of the NATO/EU lifeline, reinvented themselves as tech geniuses and entrepreneurs, and became in so many ways the beating heart of European innovation and coolness.

Sounds pretty dang good strummed, as well, but I can't really play because I sliced up the tip of my fretting ring finger a few days ago. I think it needs a slight neck adjustment, but should be all good.

  12. But what the Ukrainians have, at least the Western arms, is far more accurate/reliable than what the Russians have. You could argue that they are able to get more done with what they have - if the Russians had anything approaching the accuracy/power of HIMARs, we'd have seen it by now. Something is definitely up. We know NATO intelligence is trying to help them destroy Russian vehicles/systems and providing all kinds of satellite and signals info. We know they have extensive drone coverage constantly looking for Russian vehicles. They have accurate and powerful artillery (not just HIMARS) that can reach out behind the Russian lines quite a ways. We know the Russians are shit at hiding a lot of stuff, plus the Ukrainians are very clever about finding hidden vehicles (thanks to infrared, Russian soldiers falling into patterns, tire or tank tracks that lead somewhere and then stop, etc.). There's also the matter of them appearing not to have anything beyond the Russian/Ukraine border - witness Wagner last month in Rostov on Don and points north, but prior to that, the anti-Putin Russians in the Belgorod area. And where are Russia's helicopters? They are supposed to have 1,500, second only to the US, and have lost at least 90 confirmed by OSINT. Are the Stingers that good and keeping their aircraft from CAS? Everything about Russia right now feels like they are at, or close to, a breaking point - spread extremely thin, and seemingly not able to muster the equipment that we thought they had on paper. Dipping into the convict pool and raising the maximum age of soldiers to 60 or 65 and relying on Iran and North Korea probably tells us everything we need to know. And we know the oligarchs sold off (or stripped for parts) everything they could in the 90s and 2000s. Might also explain why Russian state media has tried beating the nuclear attacks on NATO drum so consistently over the past year, hoping to scare NATO and Ukraine because they have very little else.

  13. 1) MOST may not prioritize or even consider academics. But " ... a single recruiting report ..." ? Are you kidding me? You don't think academics were a factor in Justice Finkley coming here? Or Hayden Conner? Or in Elijah Higgins and that OL picking Stanford? 2) Someone saying academics are important means they should disregard every other factor and make a choice on that basis alone? Choosing a great blend of academics and football ... that's not consistent with academics being important? If playing close to home and family are important to Colin Simmons ... why is he considering schools other than UNT/SMU/TCU ?? 3) Oh, btw, in many areas of engr, and Comp Science, Texas is up there. (In CS, they're #11 in undergrad, and #8 in grad, per US News.) You know who's not ranked ahead of them in CS? Duke. Northwestern. Vandy. (Debating Texas' academic ranking versus those of the other schools you mentioned isn't central to the point, anyway. Just saying if you wanted to pick elite CS schools (rep/ranking ahead of Texas) that play competitive football, then other than Stanford, pick Cal. For elite CS schools that DON'T play high level football, go with CMU or MIT. Duke/Northwestern/Vandy don't belong in either category.)

  14. I am imagining a world where soon a country like Finland, with its large number of somewhat impregnable mountain military bases, will respond to any invasion threat by immediately sending waves of 1000 large armed drone from its fortresses to descend upon enemy armor and mobile artillery. No more days where Ivan leisurely sets up masses of large artillery to do the Russian ‘plow the field and then send waves of troops through the breach’ tactics. They seem in capable of learning new tactics. In that Brave New World, the country who masters anti-jamming technology - so that its thousand AI controlled drones can cover distance quickly and attack from above with the near impunity - will level the playing field against a collection of even hi-tech Russian MBTs and armor. The country that masters that technology won’t be Russia. Nor will Russia again have the economic and technological resources to attack with high tech anything. Having used up almost all their stores of older Soviet kit, I do not see Russia ever being able to rearm to the extent it would need to attack a modern Poland conventionally. Now that the Nordic countries are almost all NATO allies, they are completing their prior plans to combine their countries’ military operations into one C&C system (the NORDEFCO agreement on steroids ) they will also have the conventional means to fuck up this now much-neutered Russia. Absent nukes (which I know is an ‘other than that Mrs. Lincoln, did you like the play? ‘ statement) Russia has forever lost its capability at being a menacing conventional military super power capable of defeating NATO allies if the US is not involved. And I was alive to see it. Thanks Vlad.

I said to my buddy, Johnnie Mack who'd been a door-gunner in Viet-Nam, "Johnnie Mack, what do you think would happen to these fuckers in a real war?" Johnnie Mack, who could have been a stunt-double voice actor for Johnnie Cash, said "I reckon half of em would get killed, and the other half would start learnin." Now these are Russians, so I reckon 3/4 get killed before anybody starts learnin, but my point is we should expect the casualty rate to slow for no other reason than the the most foolhardy tankers are gone.

  31. I came across this poorly made graphic a couple of days ago, which estimates that Ukraine now has slightly more tanks than Russia. They're still far behind on heavy guns and MLRS though. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-07-05/shift-in-balance-of-arms-in-ukraine-underscored-by-fresh-data Edited to add text so no click necessary: Ukraine Has Caught Up With Russia’s Tank Numbers, Data Signal New figures from Kiel Institute put tank deliveries at 471 Russia’s fleet halves, but Kyiv needs more than parity to win New data on military aid to Ukraine highlights a significant change in the balance of heavy weapons on the nation’s battlefields after more than 16 months of war. An update Thursday of the Ukraine Support Tracker database maintained by Germany’s Kiel Institute for the World Economy said Kyiv’s backers had delivered 471 new tanks since the start of the war, with a further 286 still to arrive, even as the rate of new pledges slowed. Combined with a tally of equipment lost or captured by the open source intelligence group Oryx, widely considered to be conservative, the figures suggest that Ukraine’s tank fleet has grown since the start of the invasion last year, even as Russia’s has halved. The gap also narrowed in terms of artillery and multiple-launch rocket systems, although by much smaller margins. The data on tanks in particular tallied with parliamentary testimony given by UK Chief of the Defense Staff Tony Radakin on Tuesday. “Russia has lost nearly half the combat effectiveness of its army,” Radakin told the legislature’s defense committee. “Last year it fired 10 million artillery shells but at best can produce 1 million shells a year. It has lost 2,500 tanks and at best can produce 200 tanks a year.” According to Oryx, which records only losses it can confirm, 2,082 Russian tanks have been destroyed, damaged, abandoned or captured since the start of the war in 2022. Moscow began with 3,417 tanks available, according to the Military Balance, an annual compendium of world armories published by the International Institute for Strategic Studies, a London-based think tank. There are huge uncertainties around such figures, with both sides treating their losses as state secrets and significant difficulties in open-source collection — especially when it comes to Ukrainian losses, which are less well recorded. There are also no reliable figures for the number of replacement tanks or artillery pieces Russia has either produced or pulled from deep storage since the start of the war. Ukraine did, however, seem to come through the first year of the war with roughly the same number of heavy weapons it had at the start, despite heavy losses, according to Yohann Michel, a land warfare specialist at the IISS. Michel conducted his own analysis of the available data earlier this year, adjusting for likely biases in the data. There have since been both more losses, deliveries and seizures of Russian tanks. The same, though, can’t be said for Russia, which also has to reserve a portion of its forces for defenses elsewhere across the world’s largest country. The change in the balance of heavy arms is important, but far from decisive for Ukraine’s ongoing counteroffensive, according to Michel. Cost ‘Still High’ for Ukraine “Even if the situation is more equal in numbers, that isn’t how it works,” said Michel. “The problem is that Ukraine now needs to regain territory, so it’s on the offensive against well-prepared defenses and for that you need a strong advantage.” That explains the focus of Ukrainian forces on destroying Russian artillery and supply lines before committing the bulk of the brigades prepared for the counteroffensive. Ukraine’s general staff recently has been claiming the destruction of more than 30 Russian artillery pieces on an almost daily basis. Artillery losses are particularly difficult to verify, as they are generally hidden well behind front lines. The Kiel Institute’s update of its figures for February 25 to May 31 found that aid pledges were significantly lower than over the winter, despite some large packages from Germany and the US, with military pledges totaling €9 billion ($9.77 billion) in the period. At the same time, the share of military aid rose relative to financial and humanitarian commitments, the institute said. The US and European Union member states have been slowest to deliver on arms pledges, the report said, with 286 of 757 tanks, and 177 of 556 155mm and 152mm howitzers yet to arrive. Those delays could make even some of the delivered tanks less effective than they should be, as Ukrainian forces have had to rush training, often by different North Atlantic Treaty Organization partners that have different practices. “As long as the Ukrainians don’t have a clear advantage,” said Michel, “the cost of trying to move forward will be very high.
