Today I was hoping that I would have a great day and didn't have anything to worry about. I was gonna work from home, drop my kid off at school, wrap up my meetings by 4 and head to Sams to pick up the meat for tailgate. I didn't get any pictures...but the total weight of it was 181lbs. 4 Briskets avg 13lb, 5 pork butts avg 10.5lb, 12 racks avg 4lb, whole chicken wings - 36lbs. Thanks to @DalTxHornFan who had a connect that would do it for $1/lb smoked on Saturday ready by 3PM. I said fuck yeah you got yourself a deal. Taking all the meat there and I'm on mopac headed up to far west where this place is. Tire makes noise like it blew up, I check tire pressure everything is fine (I've been putting off tires and this one has had a small leak for a month). GOD DAMNIT I have all this MEAT in my car! So then I'm like fuck it I'm getting off on windsor and checking. I get under the car in the neighborhood and am looking and can't see anything. I get way under after lifting the suspension (air ride on the e63s)- there I saw a big strip of my inner tire just flopping down on the ground from about halfway up. Well I didn't have any scissors and it wasn't hitting anything except the wheel well a little bit I decided to limp it to the BBQ spot. 30 mph top speed up balcones all the way to far west. Get there and have all this meat. He looks at me all funny and is like that's a lot of meat, and I was like yeah do you have any box cutters or something like that I have a strip of tire I need to cut off and literally am laughing out loud at the absurdity of my life. I'm going to be late for Burnt Ends planning dinner at Fogo de chao 6PM reservation. I go outside while we wrestles this 180+ lbs of meat into the store, I cut off the strip of tire and go back inside. We confirmed the weights I ordered some beans and potato salad and they were happy to send me on my way. He may drop by tomorrow he likes to get hammered in a suite. very nice guys - he laughed in my face when I asked if they use post oak and just salt and pepper. I'm now testing my tire for limp or highway duty. We have unlocked highway - air pressure steady, run flats, GPS says I'll get there right at 6 sharp on mopac. We send it, it's a smooth enough ride, get downtown get parked am inside by 6:03, Spencer Shannon is there to greet me. We say whats up, I tell him a story about how my back is fucked up cuz I was throwing my kids in the pool yesterday as I'm slamming water from the bar. We shoot the shit for like 5 minutes and the rest of the guys show up together. We all walk to our table and I sit in the middle, Jack Endries was like tell me about what Burnt Ends is - so I go into it all and tell them we are there to have fun and really feel out what they wanna do this season. Emaree Winston and Jordan Washington immediately cutting up all over the place, Nick Townsend I don't think has ever done a churrascaria in his life, and the other guys were all so confused. Will Randle shows up late. We start the meat consumption process after a brief salad bar hit where the chicken salad was the clear winner. We talk about what they wanna do for this year and they seem fairly committed to doing a rap music video. They also wanna throw a sick party during a bye week and watch with fans. Then they wanna promote the tailgate and make the whole thing a merch line etc. They see the potential of the program and wanna push it. I teased Jordan Washington about not tackling the guy after the INT as something he was getting yelled at by the coach for. He laughed at me and said that guy that intercepted it was really fast. hahaha He got me back later in dinner when the lady came around for dessert he told her it was my birthday. I told them they can't just pick on me because I'm old and he persisted. They brought out my delicious birthday tres leches cake with a candle in it. They all sang me happy birthday really loud in a not loud or busy fogo de chao. I blow out the candle and Jordan Washington stops recording, I said oh man you aren't gonna record my wish? He goes well what is your wish? I said "I wish arch manning didn't have the yips" they all died laughing. We talked about a bunch of random stuff, they talked about wanting the rowing team to be their rap video girls and scheming where we are gonna film and what the bars are gonna be. They are wanting to have fun with the program and really make it a lot more of their personality. Emaree asked me if I liked doing this stuff and I gave him a sort of long winded answer that was about I've got a lot on my plate, but I'm really glad to be able to do it. We promptly changed the discussion to the new iphone 17 Pro Max orange and that he was gonna trade in his iphone 16 tomorrow before reporting to the hotel in the evening. then I took his ice cream away because he is 'over weight' every day, everyone laughed and he asked for his ice cream back in a mock pleading type of way and I gave it back. They are all excited to promote the tailgate and I'll give updates as soon as I have them. Hook 'Em Rick37 points

Flawed judgements on your character? Lol. I'm an old black guy that spent his whole professional life in work environments with little to no diversity. I'm an expert. I've experienced just about every kind of racism there is. I know exactly what kind of racist you are. You watched Boyz in the Hood once and Fox News and think you have Black People all sorted. You're the guy that tells a Black person they are so well spoken and walks off thinking it was a compliment. You're the guy that owns a tree trimming company, sees my and my father in law(white guy) in the driveway, and goes up to him and starts trying sell him on a job. You're the kind of guy who asks me what college I attended and when I say The University of Texas, there is a slight pause before the conversation resumes. You're the type pf guy who when he sees a Black dude pulled over with a cop car behind he you wonder what he did. You're the type of guy who goes to a job interview, and when the Black dude comes out to greet you, you are looking over his shoulder to see when the boss is coming. That's the kind of person you are, and that's why you cannot see what Kirk said is wrong.36 points

So Disney is talking to Kimmel to try to get him back on the air. I assume they are telling him exactly how cowardly they are and how nice they want him to be. If they come to an agreement I'm certainly not restarting my subscription but I'm sure many will. I'm using this as an opportunity to trim costs from my life by eliminating money sent to corporate beasts in as many places as possible. Unfortunately I've also had to include contributions to any entity associated with capitulating to this authoritarian regime, which means I've canceled my Burnt Ends and Texas One Fund recurring payments as well as deciding no further contributions to UT academics will happen either. So far with just media and recurring UT-related cancellations I'm at about $3500 per year saved. Imagine getting paid to have a clearer conscience, that's a win-win.22 points

To follow up on my last point, the "slot" language is what is telling. Take Justice Brown Jackson. At any given time there are dozens of people qualified to sit on SCOTUS. There isn't one person who is most qualfied such that if a different person gets the appointment, that person is inferior. Now lets apply that to Kirk's distrust of Black pilots. The racism is so fucking blatant and for so many reasons it shouldn't have to be explained. But here's one of the many reasons it is overtly racist. There are thousands, maybe hudreds of thousands of commercial pilots currently employed. Flying a plane is hard but doesn't require any particular form of elevated intelligence, just a lot of training. To think for even a second that a commercial airline is going to hire an unqualified Black person for DEI purposes is completely asinine and assumes that Black people are somehow incapable of comprehending the training needed to fly a plane. Or more specifically, even if there was a quota, that there simply aren't enough Black people smart enough to absorb the training and to meet the qualifications to fill that quota. Racist. As. Fuck.21 points

Me, posting in a forum full of 40+yo white guys with college degrees and jobs that keep their hands completely free of callouses with investments and 401ks and believe it's totally OK to have billions of dollars and controlling power of multiple megacorps but who also think maybe we shouldn't stone LGBT to death: "Here I am, amongst the Communists."20 points

Just another example to toss on the fire of the destruction of higher education in the US by fundamentalist nut jobs. The entire US boom starting in the 1950s to becoming the biggest economy in the world would not have been possible without the building of the greatest university system in the world. Which started with a raid of German scientists after WW2 and continued with importing the best minds from around the world on a yearly basis. Now that it is being destroyed it means the US advantage in research and development is gone and will never be back. Better enjoy the military tech superiority now because it will be eclipsed by China before too long.18 points

Kimmel’s conditions should be: 1. No apology from him. 2. Apology from Disney to his viewers and Americans for caving to political pressure. Maybe also a contribution to a trans youth support group or something. If he wants to go really hard in the paint. But fuck any apologies. On 1A go scorched earth.16 points

My problem with sports now is the same J6 folks, radical republicans, maga-tards, and Fat Boy fans who use the n-word and say disparaging things about Blacks, Women, LGBTQ, Latinos, and the like are sitting in the stands cheering on those same folks for their personal gain in the sports world—our fans included.16 points

As a follow-up to the conversation going for a couple of days. I went in yesterday and canceled my Disney+/Hulu subscription. I also cancelled a trip to Disneyland we had planned for November (haven’t bought tickets to the park yet). Yeah, I know, Disney won’t give a shit….but it makes me feel better.13 points

The sports teams and influencers themselves have made it an issue. We have NFL stadiums giving moments of silence to a political YouTuber. We have Dave Portnoy/Barstool bros infecting everything with their MAGA shit. We have Quinn Ewers wearing Trump stuff on camera. We have Joe Rogan and Tony Hinchcliffe as "celebrities" on the field at DKR. Ignorance is not an excuse. The sports need to stick to sports.11 points

So, an interesting new trend: https://www.kvue.com/article/news/nation-world/new-poll-republicans-sour-on-path-for-us/507-8b3ce73e-357a-4ae5-9854-9147855b20d9?tbref=hp I'll highlight the point that I find a bit interesting. I find the shift really interesting, and the potential reason for it REALLY interesting. We have a thread on here referring to the GOP as a "Trumpist death cult." And there's something to that. There is a strong thread of nihilism running through the movement; it's a "blow it all up," "inflict maximum pain on the other" kind of movement. They're posing for smiling pictures at the "Alligator Alcatraz" sign, we all know that "the cruelty is the point," that sort of thing. And, it's easy to fall into that worldview when you see yourself as The Main Character. These are things you/your side DOES, they are NOT things that are done to you. But the problem with "blowing it all up" (economy, education, all institutions, etc.), is that you live in the thing that you are blowing up. So when that bomb of chaos that you've been cheering on blows up, you end up looking like this: And a parallel problem is with the cruelty, and the casually inflammatory attacks on "the other" (invaders, vermin, democrats are terrorists who must be eliminated), etc. is that it lights a fuse of violence. Those of us NOT in MAGA land have seen it and sounded the alarm about it for years, particularly after signature events done in furtherance of the cause: El Paso, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Colorado Springs, the Hortmans, and on and on. But not only does MAGA not care, they actually liked it. Because functionally, all of the political violence was taking out "the other" or their enemies. Why should they mind, the people they hate are getting what they deserve! But again....the "political violence" bomb is NOT a carefully controlled explosion. It is grenades repeatedly tossed into society as a whole. And, eventually, the shrapnel from those grenades blows back on the people cheering them on. Create an atmosphere that incites increasing political violence? Well, they're fine with it.....so long as only "the other/the enemy" is the victim. But....when the storm of violence comes to them, and one of their own....well, that changes things. I am not taking the position that Charlie Kirk's murder was a good thing. Not at all. I have never, ever wanted our country to descend into political violence -- FFS, I've spent a decade being a cassandra about "fucking stop it, people, because this is the INEVITABLE outcome of where we're headed!" I didn't want El Paso to happen, I didn't want Charlie Kirk's murder to happen. None of it. Instead, what I'm observing is that my observation and warning that "this ends in bloodshed" includes a footnote of "and you can't perfectly control where and how it goes, and it WILL get messy." And perhaps what the polling above is showing that once the fantasy world that some MAGAs have constructed -- where they can spew rage, hate, and anger, inciting and inflicting pain and violence willy-nilly -- turns into reality, which is messy, ugly, and involves bloodshed and death....some of them may lose their stomach for it. It's all fun and games when we get to hate brown people and laugh about them being shackled, and not care (or only care in the most cursory of fashions) when they get slaughtered in a Wal-Mart because hey, they're invaders. It's quite different when you realize that the beast of "stochastic terrorist violence" ultimately turns on you and yours, and can't be controlled, and that beast causes some awful, messy shit, in a society that you really, really want to be clean and pretty and well-functioning. The ultimate lesson being that if you think society is too messy and chaotic, the solution isn't to inject hyper-chaos into the system; it's to do the long, slow, and hard work of cleaning up the mess and chaos. MAYBE some of these people are seeing that, across the board, "make everything more chaotic" is both counterproductive as a whole, and causes harm and pain to the very people who have cheered it on. I dunno. Hoping that a group of people realize that "cause pain and blow everything up" is a terrible idea because we all live here together is an act of pure hopefulness, which y'all know ain't my bag. But, I'm observing that COULD be part of what's reflected in this polling. Or fuck, I dunno, the guy at the end asks the right question: Is Kirk the straw that breaks the camel's back or sets off a powder keg? Thus far, the evidence we're seeing is that it set off a powder keg (one that MAGA has long-had primed, and they were eagerly waiting for the opportunity to light its fuse). But that's the near-term, and certainly the action that the admin is taking. But long-term....what are we going to see? Which direction are the American people - or at least this important subset of them - going to go? Stay tuned to find out. But not to ABC or a Tegna station.11 points

Here’s something every media conglomerate can (should) do but won’t: Boycott the admin entirely. No press conferences. No press pools. No backgrounders. No running quotes or seeking quotes. Nothing at all, let them try to use only social and Fox. Report on what they do: “Today POTUS signed an executive order order that does X.” “Today POTUS met with world leader Y to discuss X.” Run quotes from independent analysts and others, but absolutely zero platforming of the admin at all levels. “We have an obligation to report the news openly and truthfully. Accordingly, we will not carry quotes or give space to officials that habitually tell untruths and seek to silence critical coverage. We will continue to report and analyze the actions of this administration but we will not allow ourselves to be a venue for public manipulation.”10 points

Trump won the election because he won in a landslide with people who pay zero attention to news or politics. Seriously he won those people by something ridiculous like 35%. All the "hurr durr, I guess I'd like eggs a little cheaper so sure I'll vote for Trump" people, having no idea what that really meant. I don't want to put too much blame on Team Harris but they did a poor job of finding these people and sufficiently explaining what a Trump presidency would look like (this fucking hellscape we're living in now).9 points
