  1. Y’all realize that we’re watching an attempted authoritarian take-over of the United States, right? As in, it’s not a metaphor or an exaggeration. It’s literal. Donald Trump is attempting to nullify the results of an election and maintain his power despite losing through the constitutional process. It’s banana republic shit playing out in the United fucking States of America. Brisket warned y’all about this. So did Hugo and others. Those warnings were often viewed as histrionic. They were not. Trump is literally a tyrant and we are literally in a constitutional crisis. The GOP slowly cranked up the heat for four years and most of us didn’t notice how hot it was getting. Now we’re boiling.

  2. See, he comes in here and admits to voting for Trump (as did tens of millions of people) but does not endorse his post election behavior. And the response is as vicious and acidic as anything you'd see on Texags (I have found myself fascinated with that site since the election), roles reversed. I voted for Biden. But shouting down everyone who didn't without attempting to engage is why we're completely fucked as a country.

  3. It’s not about what the fucking kid needs. It’s about what the country needs. And right now, that’s a big flashing neon warning: “YOU WILL GO TO PRISON IF YOU THREATEN THE PRESIDENT-ELECT’S LIFE.”

  4. DKR was rocking like never before as the Horns thoroughly dismantled Cougar High 45-24 in a game that was far more lopsided than the final score. If you were there, you know what the environment was like that night... You younger folks may have a hard time comprehending how big of a deal this was at the time. UH had embarrassed Texas more than once in that era and John Jenkins was running and shooting roughshod over college football and were ranked #3 at the time I believe

  6. The problem Trump and the GOP have is that unlike Florida in 2000 - its not just one county in one state. Trump would need the Supreme Court to toss out election results in three states. And even if they 'tossed' those state results (and with it the 47 electoral votes for PA, AZ, and GA) it could be argued that Biden would only need to win the majority (246) of the rest of the 491 electoral votes. Which he would have. Even a corrupt Supreme Court isn't overturning this election. The reason Trump (but really McConnell) was in such a hurry to get the Stepford wife on the court was because there was a real fear that it might come down to just one state (PA) and just a few votes like Florida in 2000. It didn't. This vote isn't close. A court isn't going to be able to steal it.

  12. Which has morphed into the lie that not only are we all in this alone, any notion that we live in a society/community where our actions impact others is treated as heresy to be cast out completely. It's insanity. The cult of the individual that has been created isn't just insane and anti-human, it's anti-American. Read De Tocqueville -- he captured the essence of America at its founding. He LITERALLY wrote about what made America great and unique - and it was our ability and drive to form associations, to work together for a collective good. Balancing individual liberties with the obvious and human truth that we live in community, and that we all depend on each other and none of us are in this world alone, is how we can thrive as a nation. And no, not all individuals have a fair shot at "determining their own destiny." As has been stated here eleventy billion times, some people start the race with great training, great shoes, a great diet, and a support team around them. Others start the race malnourished, untrained, barefoot, and alone. In that race.....who are you betting on to finish? Come on, for fuck's sake. Yeah, maybe one of those starving barefoot guys has the greatest human will in history, and ekes out a finish. But the odds are WAY against him. Just like they are WAY in favor of the guy with shoes, training, and a support team. The American Dream starts with what is actually the first word in our charter document -- WE. I am very successful. I would be an egotistical narcissist liar if I said that my achievements are mine, and mine alone. I had supportive parents. I had great educators. I have had good mentors. I had a public university of the first class educate me. I benefit from a system of laws and rules that helps me succeed and prosper. I have benefited from simple acts of kindness. I have gotten lucky breaks. I have a supportive spouse. "I" have done only a part of what it takes for me to succeed -- "WE" have done a great deal to help me succeed. America's toxic obsession with "me" at the expense of (and outright demonization of) "we" is killing us. Literally, it's killing us. We are dying from secondary effects of loneliness, isolation, and broken communities. The worship of the individual to the exclusion of anything else is the worship of a false god.

  13. It’s an elected position. He won as a Republican. I would be more disturbed if he didn’t acknowledge his bias. And it provides context for the importance to having loyalty to the system over loyalty to a political preference.

  14. They’re not trying to win in the courts. That’s a diversion. The court cases are only there to fuel the narrative of election improprieties and a parallel story of a biased judiciary. They are priming the cult to support a power grab through extrajudicial means. “If there was massive voter fraud and the courts did nothing about it, what other choice did the President have? He had to save us from the Democrats trying to steal the election.” That’s the play. Trump is not and never has been interested in persuading reasonable, impartial people. He’s talking to the marks. Always. There are a lot of them, and those idiots take a completely different lesson from the inevitable failure of these frivolous suits.

  17. Its still like living amongst the Plains Indians in my household. CHIEF Jr. and I field dress them at the lease, then, bring the deer home and Mrs. CHIEF takes over. By the time we get them skinned to the neck, she already has the backstraps, tenderloins, and front shoulders removed, then, CHIEF Jr. and I sit back and watch the show. She lets nothing go to waste. She bones out the shoulders and hindquarters: This is all that is left: I sleep with one eye open. She is definitely not someone you want to meet in a dark alley late at night. CHIEF

  22. As I think the most pessimistic-about-the-Supreme Court lawyer here on Surly, I can tell you there's like a 99.9% chance that concern is gone. That's not to say that 5 (or 6) conservative justices wouldn't steal an election from the GOP in the right scenario, but this is pretty damned far from the right scenario. They'd want something like the 2000 Florida recount with an extremely close race in one state that had a bunch of fucked up ballot issues, not an insurmountable lead spread across 4 different states, with only one of those having anything resembling a conceivable reason to throw out certain votes (and those votes were separated before the count and Biden's lead in PA is big enough that they don't matter). Also, Trump's legal team is nothing but clowns. It's basically a 50/50 guess whether any particular lawsuit these guys file even states a claim for which legal relief can be granted.

  28. I'm gonna put on my serious pants for a second and assume the Republicans are actually in good faith arguing for the president. The talking point that Trump as an individual is well within his rights to contest this issue to its fullest holds no water. First and foremost Trump is not an individual he's the President of the United States and he swore an oath to the people of the United States. The power of the presidency is meant to unite all Americans not to serve the vanity of a single man. By attempting to undermine the resuts of this election he's throwing doubt on every future election and unraveling the very fabric of our republic. What makes Trump the worst president in history isn't the bad policy he's implemented or the mistakes he's made, plenty of presidents have made bad policy but every president before him had at least a belief that the office was a duty and responsibility to the American people. Every president understood that the consequences of their actions could have enormous ramifications for the people but that thought never crosses Trumps mind. Other people simply don't factor into Trumps beliefs, Trumps single Tenet is Trump. Fuck all of you who inflicted this blight upon America and I hope the revelation that you helped bring about the destruction of our republic will keep you up at night in your new autonomous commune.

  29. It's become very clear at this point that the only people who have any idea what's happening next are the ones who are really "in the know," so to speak. To that end, I think it's high time that Jesus Shuttlesworth once more braved the choking, smog-drenched mist of the humidor, uncorked an ancient single malt, lit up a cubano, and sat down and had a nice long chat with El Cohiba Grande to get us the inside scoop.
