There are still a lot of issues on offense. Him become a positive would be great beneficial, but there are still other issues.

yep but IMO the whole OL dev needs to happen and fast.  the other 4 aren't rolling balls of butcher knives at this point.  Nick did upgrade us from what was effectively a tree trunk that falls over.

Love this too.

Arch getting down the field as well. Almost had a chance to throw a block.

That’s awesome to see Washington miss then go kill.

Hopefully Brooks and goosby can prove to be a reliable duo to run behind. If we can see that everything gets much better from goal line to situational shooter yardage to avoiding 3rd and long and opening up the pass game. Make it happen.

Question for the brains.
It “seems” like our lines don’t function unless we have 5* stars at most positions. Is our blocking technique (zone blocks) too hard and guys are confused who to block or something else.

We’re not athletic enough to get to some of the blocks but we’re also not strong enough to get enough push with the other blocks due to technique really for both

So I guess question is Flood not recruiting right guys ( I know very hard to project guys 2-3 yrs down the road) or trying to fit square round peg stuff.

I admit PK 1st 2yrs had me questioning D but now Flood concerns me.

Either Flood kinda sucks or the guys aren't doing the right work outs.  Or maybe both.

Man I really wish I was at the house for this so I could show clips. As @BurntOrange&White said, basically the guys are being asked to do shit they arent capable of. Sometimes its a strength issue. Sometimes its technical. Let me give you an example of what he means. Cut to the 7:20 mark. There is a DT playing 1 tech(in the gap between the center and guard) in the left a gap. We are handing the ball off to the right and we are asking the left guard to reach a DT with the playing going away from him. Not sure how he, or anyone, is going to do that. In the Arch thread I used the phrase systemic issues. This is what I mean.

This is a teaching problem

You need to work together on zone. You are asking your LG to block a 0 tech over the center, that is a big ask. For the LG to get there he needs the center to give the 0 tech a good punch to allow the LG a chance to make that block, instead the center just vacates the area and moves straight to his assignment

Hutson makes 0 attempt to help Baker. Baker is an extremely athletic Guard and he has 0 chance to make this block. There are strength and athleticism issues, especially when they asked Stroh to block OZ. The bigger issues are fundamental technique. Lot of what I see is guys focusing strictly on their assignment. You are not seeing everyone consistently work together on zone. You also see it on pass pro with stunts. Someone will stunt around an OL and that OL stands there, allows him to cross his face, and does not give him a solid punch to at least slow him down. I remember a play in pass pro, where Wisner is one on one with DE. There are 2 OL standing like scare crows blocking nobody. Technically they did nothing wrong. The stood in their slide area and nobody showed up, but in reality the LG/LT (forgot which) should have had his head on a swivel and helped Wisner.

One facet of it is recruiting. Flood is recruiting big guys and hoping the get more athletic, rather than recruiting athletic guys and hoping they get bigger. He's asking the large humans to do athletic things and they are just not able to move the way he wants them to. What's disconcerting is that even when we don't ask them to do anything particularly athletic, like just push the guy in front of you two yards back, these "large humans" seem to lack the strength and power to move people. That seems like a Torre Becton problem. Basically:

It's been nice to see Baker be pretty consistently good since the tOSU game. He's quietly rounded into a solid starter at RT with potential to be much more. DJ Campbell also seems to have taken a small step forward. The back breaking whiffs and holding penalties occur less often from him this year, although he still has a lot to clean up and is extremely underwhelming for a 5 star in year 4 of the program.

LG and C continue to be an absolute flaming pile of shit. Brooks has potential as the solution there, but Flood wasted all offseason and the first 4 games, resulting in hundreds of reps at that spot with guys like Neto and Stroh.  Hopefully Brooks can be on a steep trajectory to average or better.  Hutson has been extremely disappointing. He's always been limited physically, but the more disappointing part is his technique and mental part of the game is also terrible, especially for a guy in year 4 of this program. Maybe Connor Robertson is a significant step up from Hutson at C and Flood has just been playing the wrong guy like he did at LG, but we'll have to wait and see on that one.

Flood and Sark's lack of development with guys on the OL has certainly been disappointing, but the gigantic red flag with them is their complete inability evaluate what they had this offseason. It's clear we never had a guy even come close to being the answer at LG all offseason. It should have been painfully obvious to them we needed at least 1 transfer at LG or C and it really should have been 1 guy at each spot.  I'm not sure how anyone can believe Flood is a UT-quality position coach when he's this bad at evaluating what he has, and it's even worse when you take into account the lack of development of so many guys who've been in the program for a number of years.

Baker gives me hope. He certainly has his issues, but I love his enthusiasm. From what I saw he is always looking for work. He is sprinting down field trying to catch Wisner, despite being 10 yards behind, just in case he can block someone to help. If he misses a block, he looks for the next guy. It seems hard to imagine a big athletic kid with that kind of attitude will not improve dramatically. I feel comfortable saying he will be a player at Texas, before he leaves. I wish I could say I am comfortable he will be a positive in the next month.

actually, he wildly underestimated the pressures. OU had 25, not 10. 4% sack to pressure rate is off the charts.

For future reference, O/U is shorthand for over/under, which is a proposition bet. I'm glad OU got fewer than 5 sacks.

See above, but you're right. I way underestimated the number of QB pressures. Glad Arch was able to escape.

I've been gorging on Ikard and Lehman podcasts this week because of the sweet sooner tears.  Ikard said Brooks isn't good right now, but he will be.

What ever makes them feel better about Brooks pancaking R Mason Thomas numerous times.

Even with momentary help, I do not there is any way Brooks could handle him as he is already across his face. Now if the play was coming his way yes. These kinds of things are the reason for a lot of out failures along the o-line. Just making shit difficult for no reason.

I agree with your 1st point, but you shouldn't expect any competent defensive lineman to be pushed back 2 yards consistently in the run game. Sometimes, a stalemate - with good positioning - is a win against a DL.

Asking your guard to get on a 0 tech is a big ask, but impossible without help. If Hutson gets on him and keeps stiff arm on him, there is a chance. It is highly unlikely that Brooks will reach him, but by Hutson stopping the initial penetration there is a chance Brooks washes him out and there is a cut back lane. Whether or not you agree that Brooks can get there, the bigger issue is Hutson has to give some help. Keep in mind that OU DL is very athletic and known for shooting gaps, so this should have been stressed in the scouting report.
