That fatality rate will go way down once the total number of infected is realized.

You got any proof of that, or are you just talking out of your ass? Someone could just as easily say oh, a lot of covid deaths aren't being counted as covid deaths, so the rate is actually higher.

Tucker had a pretty good segment tonight about what the fatality rate might actually be with examples. Also talks to a Stanford dr who’s conducting the MLB test who too believes the death rate is incredibly low

Yeah it's the other way around probably. Testing is lagging behind actual infection rates. The death rate will go down as the infection rate goes up.  A lot of non Covid deaths are most assuredly being reported as Covid deaths.

How is an interview with a doctor at Stanford politics ?  I watched the interview, and politics didn't seem to be part of anything the doctor talked about.  But hey I could be wrong,  please  point out the politicy parts.

Other than China's fake numbers, Japan's suppressed numbers and SK's "success" numbers, are there any solid numbers from any of the states in that area we can use for guidance?  Places who conceivably are a month or more ahead of us?  Or is Italy/Spain still our most forward-looking, relatively honest dataset?

I can’t even help but laugh at the unnecessary name calling. I don’t think I’ve ever said a word to you in 12+ years on these boards and your 5’7” tucked in polo shirt wearing, half balding, big nose having, giant Adam’s apple ass comes hard at me in the paint like that.

I have no idea if it’s true, it’s just how I imagine you look like

So, let's see if I've got the likely paths correct:

1 -- plenty of people have died.  And plenty more will, because our strategy right now is just to flatten the curve/infection rate -- not stop it.  Within the next year, a shitload of people will be infected.  And plenty of them will die.  That's just the way it's gonna be.

2 -- because we don't have any real solution right now (reliable treatment or a vaccine), even though we may relax some of the current restrictions, many of them will remain fully or partially in place.  Don't expect large gatherings (sporting events, concerts, large university lecture classes) to happen anytime soon -- like not until 2021.

3 -- the current global economic forecast is for the greatest economic punch since the Great Depression.  Practically speaking, we know that the restaurant, entertainment, and travel industries are going to be just hammered.  The forecast is optimistic for growth in 2021, so there's that -- but I think that's because when you've starved for a year, it's easy to gain weight, so to speak.

Summary: this virus will still spread, and still kill, and eventually, it will get the folks it is gonna get.  The global economy is going to be shattered.  The ripples from both are going to take away some of the most basic things that we've taken for granted: going to a FB game on Saturday, attending college, eating at a local restaurant, taking a trip.  Things will be bad -- very bad -- until we develop a reliable treatment or a vaccine.  That's really it.

Am I wrong on any of this summary?  Please tell me I am.  Because....fuck.

Let me guess, they speculated on the virus being more widespread than we originally thought, so it must be less deadly and totally not as big a deal as we thought. Right?

You’re correct. I’ll shorten for you: Lots if people will die and we won’t return to normal life until it burns through the population or there’s a vaccine.

For someone who is constantly talking out their own ass you don’t hesitate to accuse that chicanery on other posters.  If their views don’t align with yours they are ass talkers?  I bet there is another thread where you will find more likeminded friends. Starts with a C and ends with an R.  It’s full of ass talkers.

Edit: its bullshit we even give money to these criminals and clowns.  that money could go to improve the standard of living for people in the US.  someone shouldtotal up the amount of money we've given just these 2 organizations with zero benefit to the US.   fuck them and their bullshit.

Or there a successful therapeutic is found or developed that materially drives down CFR in severe cases.  That's still a possibility.  To me it seems plausible (if not likely) we reach herd immunity or damn close to it prior to a vaccine.   I mean even if something cut the CFR and/or reduced ICU stays by 1/3 that would be massive and with so many people working on it it seems possible at least.  I'm staying optimistic on that front.

I don't really understand the teeth gnashing over the way NYC is counting deaths.  Even with the more liberal method of counting deaths that they adjusted to yesterday, it's still much more conservative than the way the CDC estimates seasonal flu and swine flu deaths.

The CDC will eventually do this with CV 19 as well and it will likely be much higher than what the new NYC method counts now.

Quote

Why doesn’t CDC base its seasonal flu mortality estimates only on death certificates that specifically list influenza?

Seasonal influenza may lead to death from other causes, such as pneumonia, congestive heart failure, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It has been recognized for many years that influenza is underreported on death certificates. There may be several reasons for underreporting, including that patients aren’t always tested for seasonal influenza virus infection, particularly older adults who are at greatest risk of seasonal influenza complications and death. Even if a patient is tested for influenza, influenza virus infection may not be identified because the influenza virus is only detectable for a limited number of days  after infection and many people don’t seek medical care in this interval. Additionally, some deaths – particularly among those 65 years and older – are associated with secondary complications of influenza (including bacterial pneumonias). For these and other reasons, modeling strategies are commonly used to estimate flu-associated deaths. Only counting deaths where influenza was recorded on a death certificate would be a gross underestimation of influenza’s true impact.

For those of you tracking San Antonio... I've been impressed with the city's website.

https://cosagis.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/d2c7584fe9fd4da1b30cb9d6cc311163

https://www.sanantonio.gov/Health/News/Alerts/CoronaVirus

SA had been trucking along at about 50+/- new positive tests per day for the last 10 days or so, but reports 22 and 21 new positives over the past two days respectively. All of that taken with a grain of salt wrt testing, but I'll take any good news I can get these days. Hopefully it holds up.

Doing some quick math on the locals... ~78% of deaths are in people >60 years of age and only ~25% of all cases are in those >60 years of age. Also, like we've seen in other parts of the country, it is really disproportionately hitting the black community -- 12.7% of all cases, 30% of all deaths. Health disparities are real.

On a side/personal note, I turned 50 three months ago and I'd like to point out how arbitrary these ten year cutoffs are in all of these statistics. My survival odds were so much better three months ago, I suppose. For my own psychological health, they should totally go LSU Death Valley style and do this in 5 year increments.

Society recovered from the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic rather quickly.

What's keeping the same from occurring today?

Total income of everyone in the US in 1918 was around $40 billion.  Inflation adjusted, that's a total annual income of $683 billion.  Today, aggregate income is $17 trillion.  So, our economy is (by that measure), 25X the size it was in 1918.  It's a lot more complex -- and the bigger they are, the harder they fall.

That's a broad generalization and not necessarialy correct. Recovery was disparate between areas. We've only been taking coronavirus seriously for about a month. The Spanish Flu was around for over a year, though seasonal. Also it burned through the population relatively quickly, leaving millions dead. So, you know, trying to avoid that outcome has something to do with it.

An unwillingness and an ability to lessens deaths, I guess. Not being shitty. But we’re not going to let it burn through everything.

He didn't spin anything that I could discern (which is unusual for him I guess, I don't watch his show).  He let the doctor/researcher from Stanford University present  their findings.

Sorry if it bursts your whole, the sky is falling scenario. You must be in the Brisket WCC ( that's the World Calamity Camp).
