Luby’s jalapeño cheddar bizznoskets are not too shabby.   They get what the Yankee-led Whataburger doesn’t.

Quoted because this is identical to what I get, except no gravy and maybe a piece of pie if something catches my eye (narrator: something always does.)

Nor Jenny Craig.

This is a pretty damn good exchange.

Sorry just had to bump up this glory (though you should have added a side of Mac & Cheese like a real man).

You mean like a 9 year old. Fried okra as the third side. Cream gravy on the taters though

Just found out the Luby's in Plano is shutting down April 14th. The property owner negotiated a deal with Chick Fil A so the building will be torn down. That means Dallas only has 3 locations left standing :(

And another one 🙁

Quote

LAKE JACKSON — Families, friends and all those looking for something filling will have to take Luby’s off their list of places to eat in Lake Jackson; the restaurant is closing soon.

Known for its home-style meals and welcoming environment, Luby’s Cafeteria has been a go-to for years in Lake Jackson. For many, it’s where they celebrated birthdays, anniversaries and regular Sunday lunches. Situated off Highway 288, the eatery has been a mainstay for nearly 40 years, first opening its doors in 1984. News of the closure initially was announced in a statement by President Cal Gin.

“Thank YOU for dining with us here in Lake Jackson!” Gin wrote. “Unfortunately, the property has been sold, and we have been unsuccessful in negotiating a lease with the new owner. With heavy hearts, our last day of serving you will be on Thanksgiving, November 28th.”

The property had been for sale for a while, Associate Manager John Red said. The staff had always known this outcome was a possibility but hoped for the company to be able to find a new location before it came to pass.

The location almost met its demise in 2022 when it was to be sold off and turned into a Walk-On’s Sports Bistreaux, but the sale fell through in 2023.

“It comes as a bit of a surprise, but the building’s been up for sale, so we always knew the possibility,” said Red, who has been with the company since 2007 and at the Lake Jackson location since 2012. “We did try to work out some leasing options. … I just couldn’t come up with anything that would be sustainable.”

The possibility of reopening elsewhere in the city or county remains on the table, but it is uncertain.

“There’s nothing official,” Red said. “I know that the company is talking to people, but there’s no official word on anything.”

This uncertainty has left many wondering about the fate of Luby’s location in Angleton. The cafeteria has a satellite location in the Central Brazoria County Business Park which depends on the Lake Jackson location for its supply, with staff transporting cooked dishes to the site every day. Without the kitchen in Lake Jackson, the Angleton location will close.

Thanksgiving has long been a significant day for the cafeteria, with many families opting to dine at Luby’s or pick up pre-ordered meals for their celebrations.

Red confirmed this tradition would continue one final time, allowing patrons to pick up packages the day before Thanksgiving.

Then, the staff will operate as usual on Thanksgiving Day before locking up for one last closing shift.

40 years was a good run

Saw that, but it's takeout only.  Makes it less attractive.

Counterpoint: You can say you ordered for the entire office instead of plowing through it in front of a dining room full of strangers.

I think you show up with your own tray and silverware wrapped in a green, linen napkin and walk that to-go order back to the office.

Luby's was damned fine, but....the rectangle of fish wasn't right.  We all got it, and we all noticed that the breading was too thick/dense.  As in, you had to cut the fish with a knife.  It tasted okay, but the batter used to be lighter/crispier.  Or maybe we got a bad/overbreaded batch.  Everything else was mi-tee-fine, though.

If they were going to screw up something, why did it have to be the fish?

Luanne Platter is rolling over in her grave!

That said, I would smash that fish like the fist of an angry god.  It's been too long.

I worked a summer at Luby’s. To-go “waiter”. Fried fish was far and away the most popular item. Especially on Sundays.

It’s always been frozen. They’d take big blocks of haddock and cut them with a band saw into planks. I believe they’d thaw them in the fridge, bread it, fry it, and put it on the mine as needed.

I can never remember us running out of fish, so they had a shit ton of it.

Yeah, the fish is frozen beforehand, but I always understood the breading happened on-site.

I can’t recommend that location. Been a couple times and it’s not good.

OST has better food and for some reason the portions are bigger too. I’m sure I’ve listed my go to order in this thread before, but here goes: Luann roasted chicken with stuffing and cranberry sauce, sweet potato casserole, green beans with bacon and onion, jalapeño cornbread with Cajun Chef, and icebox chocolate cake.

I recently found out the Downtown Houston location serves breakfast pretty early. I’m going to stop by next I’m down there. I’ll report back.

It’s completely possible the fish they’re serving now is prebreaded, and they just throw the planks in the fryer.

If that's true, whoever made that decision could fuck up Christmas.  We've lost so much.  May this be the tipping point.

Tyler had a cafeteria called Traditions, which was started by a former Luby's employee.  The food was identical if not slightly elevated, and once inside, you might as well have been at Luby's (and we had three other Luby's in town).  It recently shut down (after we lost all of our Luby's).  It's been a small but noticeable hole in my eating-out existence these last few years.

Now that I think about it, I’m not sure they thawed it out before breading it back in the day. I’m not sure how you bread frozen fish, but I suppose it can be done. Skipping a step probably saves them a shit of time and money , but I feel bad for their customers. People routinely drove an hour in one direction to get the fish.

Starchy. I got fat shamed in the Whataburger thread for my go to order, and this is a prime target, but I’ll rise above it.

Their CFS is good, but I always thought their chicken fried chicken was slightly better. Their okra and mac and cheese is damned good.

Once upon a time, there was a Wyatt's Cafeteria in the Broadway Square Mall. I always preferred Wyatt's to Luby's but both were good and had their own style. At one point, that Wyatt's went to an all-you-can-eat buffet.  That was awesome and I'm not sure how many average customers they needed to cancel my impact to the bottom line 😄.

There was a Wyatt’s in Barton Creek Mall too. The only 3 restaurants we ate at as a kid in Westlake was there, Tres Amigos and the Jim’s on South Lamar and Ben White. I’m not complaining either.

Luby's in the Houston med center is going strong. Good food

I love Luby’s, but if I want to go to a cafeteria over by the Houston Med Center, I’m going to Cleburne’s.

When I was growing up, I also was a big fan of Piccadilly Cafeteria in Memorial City Mall.  Salisbury Steak was on point back in the day and, as a little kid, getting to throw my tray on that conveyor belt when I was done was fun.  Simpler times.

Piccadilly was a Louisiana outfit, and as a result, their gumbo and fried catfish was on point.

Looks like they still have an outpost in Monroe, which is where DCBC Jr. will have a water ski tournament in a few weeks.  Unfortunately/fortunately, I will not be making the trek this year since I'm slated to cook BBQ for the ski team to eat on their way back to Austin.  But now I'm thinking Gumbo and Salisbury steak. ;)

/one of my flaws as an east Texas transplant (from Houston) is that if I say I want to eat catfish, somebody better take my car keys away from me because I'm too drunk to make reasonable decisions.

luby's easily has the best lover and onions, that's my usual order

Back when we’d go to Lubys more often, it was my “every now and then” order. When you want it, it hits. Add a good dash of salt and pepper, eat each bite with a bit of griddled onions, and you are L-I-V-I-N.

Truth!  I've learned how to make that recipe pretty well, but my wife makes me do it outside.  The smell is godawful!  I use pork rind panko, so it is totally keto.

Are the onions part of the lovemaking or something to eat after the act?
