Miscellany

We are in a very interesting time in Steve Sarkisian’s tenure. It seems like potential moves are there to be made and recruiting momentum can still be salvaged.

Here are a few nuggets and rumors that are in the ecosystem that affect Texas either directly or indirectly.

We’re not expecting quarterback Hudson Card to be available for the final game of the season on Friday. He has a high ankle sprain thanks to the dirty late hit on Saturday. While we don’t expect him to play, he did play in the state championship game his sophomore year with a broken wrist, so we may not entirely rule it out. We’ll see what Sark says today.

IT feels confident this program is going to look a lot different in the coming months. The expected addition of 33 new players has been well documented, but we’ll see a coaching shuffle of some degree as well. We also expect some changes or additions to the personnel department.

We’re watching the instate coaching carousel closely to see if any potential moves will impact Texas. With Sonny Dykes expected to get the TCU job, that opens up SMU. We’re definitely paying attention to where Ra’Shaad Samples ends up, if for no other reason it could help Texas with Garland wide receiver Jordan Hudson.

On3’s No. 22 player in the nation would make an immediate impact at Texas if he somehow flipped to the Horns.

To be clear, we are not saying Samples will end up at Texas, but we’re not exactly ruling it out either. There are reverberations in the rumor mill that Texas could become an option in some capacity. While Samples is a fan favorite due to his ability to recruit DFW, college coaches wonder how ready he is to be a position coach.

Rumored candidates to replace Dykes at SMU include Rhett Lashlee, Kevin Sumlin, and Lincoln Riley’s brother Garrett, who is SMU’s current OC.

With shakeups at Texas Tech, TCU, and SMU, there is one particular high school coach who may get elevated to the college ranks. When accounting for recruiting, the impact might reach Texas.

One more variable in play: We are awaiting an NIL announcement that should garner headlines and goodwill from recruits.

Recruiting Matters

WR Matthew Golden, Klein Cain (Spring, TX) - 2022: The former TCU commit will see Austin on Friday for the UT-Kansas State contest. The visit is currently slated to be an unofficial. Baylor is expected to receive an official visit prior to the early signing period. LSU could receive an official visit. Houston is also fighting hard. The On3 four-star pass-catcher recently de-committed from the Horned Frogs after Gary Patterson stepped down, and took in Waco last weekend. Golden can be a December graduate, but is not sure if he will now due to having his recruitment turned upside down.

WR Jordan Hudson, Garland (Garland, TX) - 2022: Where Ra’Shaad Samples coaches next year will likely pay a key role in deciding where Hudson signs his LOI in December. This is Samples’ year to move to a Power 5 program with the high-end level of recruiting done in the 2022 cycle at SMU. One member of the staff at Garland High recently told IT that Hudson will almost certainly sign with the school Samples coaches at next season, because it won’t be too far from Hudson’s family.

RB Jamarion Miller, Legacy (Tyler, TX) - TEXAS: Miller continues to say all the right things, and those close to him prefer he stays instate and follows through on his commitment to UT, however we’re paying close attention to Alabama. Bama continues to press and there is some growing confidence in Tuscaloosa.

WR Evan Stewart, Liberty (Frisco, TX): Per our Alabama affiliate, Stewart did not make his scheduled trip to Alabama over the weekend. IT continues to believe the five-star will decide between Texas and Texas A&M.

CB Denver Harris, North Shore (Houston, TX) North Shore - 2022: IT was told Sunday that Harris is more open to the idea of ending up in College Station. LSU’s coaching hire and Corey Raymond staying on staff is key for the Tigers’ hopes. Texas has done a very good job recruiting Harris’ mom and older brother, who are very big in the decision making process. This one still has a ways to go but A&M is making up ground thanks to stability and putting together a strong recruiting class.

OL Kelvin Banks, Summer Creek (Humble, TX) (OREGON) - 2022: The On3 five-star tackle prospect and Oregon commit has been more open in his recruitment over the last month or so. While maintaining his status as a future Duck, Banks visited Austin recently and also decided to trip to College Station on Saturday to watch the Aggies take on Prairie View A&M.

One source close to Texas A&M recruiting didn’t believe Banks would end up in College Station, as of Saturday. IT is taking a wait and see approach with Banks’ recruitment with Texas A&M.

The sentiment seems to sway towards him staying closer to home, and that the Horns or Aggies would be his most likely landing spots. Texas has been tremendous here in maintaining the relationship with Banks and his family and has put itself in prime pouncing position with less than a month before early signing day. Banks has been talking to a few of the UT commits in the 2022 cycle often, leaving the door open for a potential flip.

OL Malik Agbo, Todd Beamer (Federal Way, WA) - 2022: The University of Florida was going to be Agbo's final free trip. Since Dan Mullen stepped down on Sunday, the Gators will no longer get a chance to host the 6-foot-5.5, 320-pound prospect, Agbo tells IT. He also said he'll not use his final official and will now begin the process of figuring out his future landing spot.

Texas, Miami, Auburn, OU, and Florida make up his final top five schools, and Agbo is looking closely at the Longhorns. He sees the opportunity to play early, and to help build the team through Steve Sarkisian.

His visit to the ATX in October was a "real eye-opener about the program and how everyone has each other's back and the real deal family environment."

UT looks good here, along with Auburn, and it will be interesting to see where he fits if Devon Campbell and Kelvin Banks decide to join the party. If the number is five, Agbo might be numero cinco in 2022's class. And as of late last week, Agbo wasn’t a take for Auburn. Could that change, sure, but Agbo is feeling the love from the Longhorns staff.

DB Jaylon Guilbeau, Memorial (Port Arthur, TX) (TCU) - 2022: Don't be surprised if the former Texas pledge rejoins the class. The On3 four-star defender has been talking to the UT staff and if he decides to flip back to orange house, we could see it soon, maybe even during the holiday week. Stay tuned. The vibe Guilbeau receives from Jeremy Modkins about his future status at TCU will play a key role in this decision making process.

LB Harold Perkins, Cypress (Texas) Cy Park - 2022: Texas A&M remains very confident on the 5-star linebacker. LSU is in limbo, but could win late with the correct hire. Texas is in the fight for sure.

ATH Matayo Uiagalelei, St. John Bosco (Bellflower, CA) - 2023: It really doesn't matter where you put the 6-foot-5, 263-pound On3 consensus five-star, he'll make plays regardless. Whether defensive end or tight end, the younger brother of Clemson quarterback DJ Uiagalelei can play on either side of the ball. Likely destined for defensive at the next level, Uiagalelei is getting the five-star treatment. With 20+ offers including UT, Alabama, Clemson, Notre Dame, and Georgia, Uiagalelei will have his pick of the litter come national signing day in December 2022.

Texas is a school to watch in this recruitment. After visiting earlier last summer, the elite prospect would like to return to Austin for a trip. Uiagalelei mentioned when you think of college football, you think of Texas and Vince Young. He acknowledges they've been down, but he really likes Steve Sarkisian, who offered Matayo as a freshman at Alabama, and believes the Horns will be great once Sarkisian begins bringing in his own guys.

Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia, and Clemson are the other schools Uiagalelei mentioned most, each presenting a unique spot in his pursuit. But don't be surprised to see Matayo back in Austin early in 2022, potentially at Junior Day.

Nobody is underestimating the back to back defending champs and North Shore played Westlake much closer than Southlake did.

Westlake.jpg

@Helobious,  @Ravishing Rick and @Beau Vine, here's your 100% sunshine-pumping-free review of last week's Westlake/New Braunfels game.

Last week, a disrespected, scrappy, ragtag team of misfits from Westlake faced off against a much faster and stronger New Braunfels team. Given little chance of winning, the Chaps had nothing other than their belief in each other. With their head coach sick in the hospital, the team turned to an unlikely hero to lead them. One of the fathers, a former failed athlete himself that had lost his self-confidence and the respect of his wife and family, took over, though he had no experience coaching at any level.

The game started like all the others, with the Chaps quickly falling into a hole due to in-fighting with players who come from different backgrounds and don't understand what everyone has gone through, plus some unlucky plays and hopelessly biased refereeing. The crowd, plus the board of trustees, who are led by a woman who is planning on disbanding the school entirely to build a hotel on the grounds, was snickering at the hopeless play before them. The New Braunfels coach and his mean son, who is angry bully, taunted the Chaps and the father, who was looking like a failure to his family again.

As the halftime bell sounded, the crestfallen team trudged to the sidelines. With nothing to lose and the Chaps in a hole, the father overcame his bias against girls playing sports and put his daughter in at QB. The team left the locker room with a renewed sense of purpose and energy. With nothing to lose and no-one believing in them, the Chaps pulled all out all the stops and left it all on the field. As the Westlake girl QB made incredible play-after-play, the formally hostile crowd began chanting, "Westlake, Westlake, Westlake."

Finally, with one more chance to pull out the victory, the coach's daughter scrambled until the clock ran out, then heaved the ball into the end zone, where the shortest, most bullied Chap of them all, made an incredible catch to seal the victory. As the team carried him off the field, the crowd rose as one to salute the inspiring effort of the team. In a surprising turn, the New Braunfels coach and his son congratulated the father and his daughter, who even got a kiss from the cute running back.

Moved by the inspiring effort, the coach's wife stood up and cheered, and she texted her lawyer (who has been trying to win her hand) to cancel her divorce proceedings. Enraged by the surprising outcome, the mean woman on the board ranted that it was too late to save the school. Fortunately, the other trustees finally stood up to her and fired her on the spot.

As the Chaps celebrated their unlikely victory, the father, his wife and daughter embraced on the field.

Stay tuned for a sequel, as our disrespected heroes face an even mightier Valley team, Pharr-San-Juan-Alamo-North-Southwest-Goliad-Refugio-Bastrop-Tuesday-San-Antonio.

Ok, just got little more info. There is a letter from Superintendent saying that the coach will not be part of practice or the game this week. No specifics. Didn’t use the word fired.

Rumor is he attacked a kid In the weight room and there are cameras in there and there is a police investigation.

Appears there will soon be an opening if that's true. Just crazy.

Pharr-San Juan-Alamo North Early College High School really takes your breath away.

Yeah the early college thing was stupid when they added it to their high school names. But everyone just knows them as PSJA, PSJA North, PSJA Southwest. On one hand it’s dumb to have all 3 towns on there but on the other it is pretty hard to forget.

Might as well go all the way and cross-name the school after an alumnus or otherwise famous person with a ludicrously long name.
Pharr-San Juan-Alamo North Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Ruiz y Picasso Early College High School and All You Can Eat Carwash.

Got any ideas on a good mascot for that school?

I said I wasn't going to do this pick-one-game-from-each-region thing again, but I'm supposed to be grading projects, so why wouldn't I write 2000 words about HS football?

6AD1
R1:  Southlake Carroll (12-0) vs Lewisville (11-1), 2 p.m. Saturday at Coppell  The Fighting Farmers have already pulled a couple of upsets, but it would be a shock to see them win this.  Winner gets Trinity-Allen.

R2:  Swapping opponents from the 2020 matchups that saw the DFW schools win both of these.

Duncanville (10-1) vs Spring (11-1), 7 p.m. Saturday at Frisco
DeSoto (10-2) vs Spring Westfield (12-0), 4 p.m. Saturday at San Antonio

I think Duncanville is probably the best team of the four.  Spring's only loss is to Westfield.  At some point, we I have to accept that Desoto’s Judson loss was a fluke and recognize that they’re a really good team whose only other loss is to Duncanville and they’ve kicked the shit out of every other team they’ve played, including a really good Rockwall team last week.

R3:  Fort Bend Ridge Point (11-1) vs Humble Atascocita (10-2), 7 p.m. Friday at Houston  This is a great matchup, as Ridge Point seems to be peaking, and Atascocita got pretty lucky to get past Dickinson last week.  I'd bet on the best player, and that's RP's Bert Emmanuel Jr.  Winner gets Tompkins-North Shore.

R4: Austin Bowie (10-2) vs San Antonio Brennan (12-0), 7 p.m. Friday at New Braunfels
I watched Bowie beat a verrry slow Smithson Valley team last Friday; didn’t seem to have much offensively other than a shifty little RB. Brennan is probably the best team in SA, but who has any idea how good that makes them?  Winner gets LT-Laredo US.

6A DII
1: Guyer’s JV could win this region. I bet they will get playing time.

2: This is too spicy to pick one:

Cedar Hill (8-4) vs Cypress Bridgeland (10-2), 2 p.m. Saturday at Waco’s Waco ISD Stadium
Rockwall-Heath (11-1) vs Tomball (9-3), 8 p.m. Saturday at San Antonio

Bridgeland has been winning, but not convincingly.  CH’s loses are to Rockwall, Allen, Desoto, and D’Ville, so those records are deceiving.  Heath has scored 636 points this season.

3.  Katy (12-0) vs Houston King (10-2), 12 p.m. Friday at Katy  King has established themselves as an H-town power under coach Derek Fitzhenry (yeah, him), but Katy will be too much for them.

4. Austin Vandegrift (11-1) vs Edinburg Vela (12-0), 4 p.m. Friday at Corpus
Valley teams usually get blown out this week because they lack the caliber of defense necessary to compete.  But Vela has allowed just 93 points all season; unfortunately 24 came last week against Taft, and Vandy is a lot better than Taft

5AD1

R1: Amarillo Tascosa (10-2) vs Colleyville Heritage (11-1), 3 p.m. Saturday at Wichita Falls  One of the better running jokes on Texags started when a poster claimed that Tascosa has three guys faster than Brenan Thompson.  If true, they have a shot to beat CH.

2: Denton Ryan (11-1) vs Longview (9-3), 3 p.m. Friday at Mesquite  Ryan beat the Lobos 40-7 back in Week 0, and I have a hard time getting past that, even though Longview is vastly improved, and the Raiders’ offense is verrrry shaky.  I also think LV will have trouble getting past Anthony Hill, who looks to me like the most “must-have” recruit in 2023.

3: Manvel (10-2) vs Fort Bend Hightower (10-2), 7 p.m. Friday at Sugar Land  District rematch, as the Hurricanes pulled a 16-12 upset two months ago.  I think the it’s-tough-to-beat-a-good-team-twice thing is usually bullshit, but I’ll take Manvel here, simply because they look like a better team now.

4: Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial (11-1) vs McAllen Memorial (11-1), 3 p.m. Friday at Corpus  Vets is probably favored in this game, but McM slobberknocked a Victoria West team that Vets struggled with during the regular season and McM’s only loss was in August to undefeated Vela, so don't be shocked to see an RGV team in the region finals against the Flour Bluff/GP winner.

5AD2

R1: Rider and Lubbock Cooper will be dispatching outmanned opponents in anticipation of their annual regional final meeting next week.

2: Aledo (12-0) vs South Oak Cliff (10-1), 2 p.m. Friday at Mansfield  I mean, if Aledo is going to lose, it will be a matchup like this, right?  SOC’s only loss was Week 1 to Duncanville.  Aledo’s lowest point total this season is 35.

3: College Station A&M Consolidated (10-2) vs Crosby (10-2), 7 p.m. Friday at Cypress  Crosby gets the edge in this one and will probably get a badass Texarkana team next week.

4: Leander Rouse (11-1) vs Liberty Hill (10-2), 7 p.m. Friday at Pflugerville
LH is actually winning with a tough D this season; Rouse’s only loss was in early Sept to Weiss. I want to pick Rouse, but LH’s O is so tough to plan for that I'm not very confident.

4AD1

R1: Dumas (9-2) vs Wichita Falls Hirschi (10-2), 3 p.m. Friday at Plainview
This could be a really good one.  I think the Demons have the better overall resume, but Hirschi is on such a roll, with 10 straight wins.

2: Stephenville (12-0) vs Argyle (11-1), 7 p.m. Friday at Mansfield  Argyle is lacking the usual stellar QB that makes them unbeatable, but the Eagles usually win state behind a huge line and a good RB, so not sure that matters that much.  Both teams have played really tough schedules, so it’s a shame they’re matching up in playoff week 3 instead of week 5.

3: Little Cypress-Mauriceville (10-2) vs El Campo (11-1), 6 p.m. Friday at Shenandoah  If the Ricebirds get *ANY* defense, they’re tough to beat because their offense is ridiculous.  LCM is pretty damn good, but an offense averaging only 31 ppg looks like what El Campo will feast on.

4: Austin LBJ (12-0) vs Boerne (9-2), 12 p.m. Saturday at San Antonio  There’s no reason to doubt LBJ any more. The Greyhounds did play their best game of the year last week, pasting CC Miller 63-13, so maybe they can keep it close.

4AD2

R1: Two routs are upcoming as Aubrey and Celina will have a rematch in the Reg final.

R2: Texarkana Pleasant Grove (7-5) vs Quinlan Ford (12-0), 1 p.m. Friday at Mount Pleasant  I would not be surprised at all if TPG wins this.  QF hasn’t played nearly as tough a schedule, and this is as far as the school has ever advanced, and they won last week because the time ran out on Pittsburg as they tried to get the FG team on.

R3: How does a region where the teams are a combined 54-1 sound?

China Spring (12-0) vs Carthage (11-0), 5 p.m. Friday at Prosper’s Children’s Health Stadium
West Orange-Stark (10-1) vs Bellville (12-0), 6 p.m. Friday at Porter’s Randall Reed Stadium

Carthage’s offense looks a little subpar, so they look less invincible than at any time in the past two seasons.  CS has outscored opponents 591-122, so they’re capable of winning.
Bellville has matched WOS’s famous Chain Gang defense with 116 points allowed all season, plus they have an amazing running attack.

R4: Cuero (11-1) vs Wimberley (10-2), 12 p.m. Friday at San Antonio  Classic matchup here.  Cuero beat Wimbo 21-3 early in the season; the Texans played most of that game with their 3rd-string QB due to injuries.  Wimberley has been nearly flawless in the playoffs, with a 122-0 combined score.  Sticking my neck out here because everyone else is calling it a tossup – Wimberley wins easily.

3AD1

R1: Tuscola Jim Ned (12-0) vs Brock (12-0), 2 p.m. Friday at Brownwood  Another game that’s happening too early, as this should be a state title game.  Brock’s closest game was 19 points, but the Indians have played a tougher schedule and they have the experience of winning it all the hard way in 2020, so give me JN.

2: Mount Vernon (12-0) vs Gladewater (9-2), 7 p.m. Friday at Sulphur Spring MV not missing Art Briles much.  Their closest game was 41-21.  Gladewater’s losses are to Gilmer and Kilgore, and they just spanked Grandview last week, so the Bears will be ready to play.

3: Lorena (10-2) vs Columbus (10-2), 1:30 p.m. Friday at San Marcos  Columbus has been a trendy pick for state, but Lorena looks like a better team to me.  The Leps lost their first two games to Franklin and China Spring, and have rolled since.

4: San Diego (10-1) vs Vanderbilt Industrial (10-2), 7 p.m. Friday at San Antonio  Vandy has to be heavily favored in this, but Llano was more heavily favored last week and the Vaqueros beat them, so who knows?

3AD2

R1:  Abernathy (11-1) vs Canadian (9-3), 2 p.m. Friday at Amarillo  Worst Canadian team in years, but someone has to kill them.  I think Abernathy has that team, as they have a good enough QB to exploit the mediocre Wildcat D.

2: Two blowouts should set up a Holliday-Gunter battle for the region final.

3: West Rusk (12-0) vs Daingerfield (10-2), 6 p.m. Thursday at Longview  Daingerfield has got it going; they avenged a loss last weekend by beating Elysian Fields by 40.  WR has scored at least 24 every game, so this should be a shootout.

4: Two blowouts with Franklin and Poth administering the beatings.

2AD1

R1: Hawley (12-0) vs Coleman (11-0), 6 p.m. Friday at Abilene  This looks like a typo, but Coleman has allowed 51 points all season, with 5 shutouts.  Hawley has allowed only 73, and went from 9/10 to 11/5 without allowing a point.

R2: Crawford and Tolar should win easily.

R3: Timpson and Centerville should win easily.

R4: Shiner and Refugio will win easily.

2AD2

R1: Wellington (8-3) vs Gruver (10-1), 4 p.m. Friday at Canyon  Gruver has had the better season overall, but Wellington has gotten really hot and has much more winning history, so I don’t know how you pick against them.

R2: Two great matchups here…

Santo (11-1) vs Windthorst (11-1), 1 p.m. Friday at Graham
Muenster (12-0) vs Albany (11-0), 2 p.m. Friday at Springtown

Santo’s loss is to Albany; Windthorst’s is to Muenster.  Albany has outscored opponents 598-55.  I’ll take Albany and Santo in a district sweep.

R3: Mart and Chilton will both roll and have a district rematch next week.

R4: Eldorado (10-1) vs Falls City (11-1), 7 p.m. Friday at Cedar Park  FC will win this simply because they have a much better D.

I’ve been bitching about how much talent Littleton has wasted at McMemorial over the years, hilarious that they might go to the regional final in their first year without him (yeah it’s 5A not 6A but he still would’ve screwed it up). No Speights bro on the team either. Naturally now that I say that they will lose on Friday probably.

Vela had Taft shutdown all game until late in the 4th, when the raiders finally noticed that their guys on offense were faster than anyone on Vela’s defense (this actually wasn’t true on the other side of the ball, Vela has quick receivers & that Rivera kid can fly, hence his 400 rushing yards). Taft also got a surprise onside kick too. Call me a homer but I think Vela keeps it respectable with Vandy.

Im actually gonna say Brennan upsets Bowie. The bears have a lot of firepower on offense and I’d bet that they have better athletes than Bowie. Their coach is actually smart enough to use them the right way too, unlike the Taft guy.

2AD1

R2: Crawford and Tolar should win easily.

R3: Timpson and Centerville should win easily.

R4: Shiner and Refugio will win easily.

This is amazing. You should be monetizing this. You could have a really strong Texas HS platform that combines website/blog plus video that people send you. You could also have a weekly podcast. This is better than what the competition offers.

Thanks, this is part of why I started doing this.  Other than Matt Stepp, DCTF is just so fucking worthless.  They still haven't picked their "Sleepers" on their Playoffs page.

Someone put the texashsfootball.com domain up for sale last year, and I thought about it, but they were asking over $100K for a site that was shit but had a good name, so I didn't think long.

Is 5atexasfootball.com still a thing? Slorch would know. Also the place I was able to meet Wide-e-Wide and Jtk1519 on. Used to be a great place to talk HS football. Then Jeremy got married and his brother didn’t want to help out as much and they turned it over to some commie’s and I bounced sometime around 2011.

I see. That is a steep price. There are other names out there. Here are three I just pulled out of my behind. I bet there are way more memorable ones than these out there.

As far as functionality, it would be pretty simple to create something that works well for all platforms.

Springtown takes on EP Riverside Saturday. Springtown has a super young QB that is very, very prone to making unwise decisions that lead to turnovers. He’s done better as of late and he has the ability to air it out, but still he worries me. Springtown D has been very opportunistic lately and created a lot of turnovers.

Still missing 3 starters will be hard to overcome for a team that has absolutely no depth, to the point that they have 2 two-way starters and several others that get a lot of action on both side of the ball. Riverside has a QB that throws like Stephen Hawking but runs like Forest Gump. So much so that he was running on the final day at state meet last year in the 300 hurdles. Springtown doesn’t have anyone that can catch him if he gets loose, but Cedar Hill in 2009 had 17 D-1 athletes and lost to Abilene high and their one D-1 athlete because good coaching and discipline make up for a lot at this level. Springtown wins the turnover battle and they’ll win the game.

I wanted to give a more in depth review of Jim Ned vs Brock, but the above was way too wordy so I’ll just say that JN has heart….and Xavier Wishert and Brock has twatface Billy Mathis. Indians 23-16.

Stephenville takes Argyle. 42-28

Albany runs wild over Muenster. 49-not a lot.
