What the fuck is wrong with you, Austin?

You know, all bad jokes aside...think about how amazing it is that the UT community including campus proper and west campus with faculty and staff is about 75,000+ people.  And that we don't lose more than, on average 1-2, per year.  That's be a shining example to America if it were its own stand-alone city.  All those young people, all that real estate, all those drugs, all that booze.  It's fucking stunning to me that more deaths don't occur.  Obviously this recent one is tragic and saddening.  And yes, I did not have homeless machete-wielding lunatic turns to arson while multiple car dealer inheritance kids also turn to murder was not on my Austin bingo card.  But I think "On the brink of disaster" is a tad misleading.

Then again, Nicole's still getting prettied up for a night on Rainey Street.  Day ain't over yet..../curly

Yet…you still don’t see the folly in doing one extreme or the other.
“Law and order! War on drugs!” didn’t fucking work.
Decriminalization alone isn’t working/wont work.
So, the logical answer is just to lurch back and forth between those two things that don’t work. Fucking hell.

Or…and just go with me here…we could stop using “drug crime” to create a massive “criminal class” and instead devote resources to mental health and addiction treatment, with law enforcement protecting public safety and order from those who refuse to be helped?

Naaah. That’s either pussy liberal socialist shit, or working hand-in-hand with the Gestapo, depending on who you’re listening to. Instead, let’s just vehemently insist on doing things that don’t work.

I don’t disagree. The other day a group of teachers got a car for their school janitor who walked to work every day. Austin would probably just make the sidewalk wider for him.

I dislike both extremes. We need more help funneled into the right areas. But I don’t think implementing failed solutions regarding  certain societal problems just because a certain class of people is more affected is bullshit.

I’d legalize marijuana and the sale of it and pour money into the communities that most need financial assistance. I’d use the taxes to protect our border but also to allow for humanitarian aid there. More processors to find out who people are. Who we are letting in. I’d make a realistic path to citizenship. I wouldn’t call them new comers/immigrants/illegals and so on. I would refer to each person as a citizen of whatever their country of origin is. Seeing them as one group all the same with all the same intentions is a fallacy. Because we are letting in some bad apples with a lot of the good ones. Those bad apples are committing real crimes like murder and rape. Those bad apples do not represent all of the individuals that come over here. However they come over. 1 million people can’t all claim asylum here. We can’t take on millions and millions. There has to be some limit. No other country would allow this. None. We don’t owe millions and millions of people south of the border citizenship in the United States. Any more than Canada owes some of us who’d like to flee our oppressive states in the US citizenship.

As far as the homeless population in Austin I’d follow as an example places like Finland or Houston or San Antonio that have had success with their homeless populations and follow a program that has proven to work. You shouldn’t go to jail for selling a little weed. If you’re a cartel that’s different. Gangbanger that’s a little different. Rolling around doing other crimes. That’s different. Decriminalization only works if the people you intend to help accept a little personal responsibility.

The truth is: I have a lot of regrets. Things I look back on and wish I did something different. Said something or helped in some way. I don’t need more shit piled onto the shit I pile on top of myself on the daily. If we all tired a lot harder to first take care of our own messes and see our own actions kind of led us to where we are as well as other factors life would be a lot different. We would be better able to care for those among us who are unable to. If the ones of us with ability would all fix the shit in our own backyard and ask for help for the stuff we can’t fix life would be a lot different. It won’t change.

Things won’t change because the ones who have power won’t give it up and the ones who don’t have power want that power. We all look at each other as the enemy. I can’t take on the responsibility of anyone else’s blame or guilt or shame any more than I would ask someone to take on mine. If we’d take care of our own bullshit we’d be able to fix a lot of problems. Pointing the finger and blame hasn’t worked either. Bringing up the last 200 plus years has nothing to do with me. I didn’t create that. I am not going to shoulder that and I don’t think 60% of American people should have to or want to shoulder the sins of America’s from its origins.

All this breeds is more hatred, guilty, shame and entitlement and division. We are more separated than ever. We see people in a group. As part a group. We don’t see individual people. It sucks and makes me sad. I have a lot of regrets. I have a lot I can do and should do and am trying to do. I am not responsible for anything more than that. I sure as shit am not responsible for how someone’s life in Podunk Idaho turned out.

We want 100% alignment with everyone on every issue and solution or we get triggered or go ballistic. No middle ground. No compromise. It’s a mess. Austin is becoming a bigger mess because of this same thing. We don’t take care of our own messes and it bleeds into everything. Bigger messes and we think the best thing to do is make easier for people to create even bigger messes without supervision.

Not the right thread, but would love your take on Humanitarian assistance to those down south.

Folks in Atlanta (if she is really there), I think Nicole found some Zima. Stay away from rivers and ponds.

Proud to still be sober. I do gummies though. For my arthritis. From a store. They rule. Fuck Zima. When I donate I do local charities and then Chef Jose’ Andres’ charity for feeding the world. He was on tv talking about food to Gaza. Said doesn’t matter how it gets there they need food. We need humanitarian aid on the border. It would be great if we could fund this with the taxes from selling weed. That would be cool. Get some doctors and nurses to see people. Maybe even help build a train to get across all of south, Central America and Mexico. Provide food and aid. Move a lot of factories and manufacturing plants there. We are at a breaking point in Austin. We were not meant have this many fucking people. We can’t sustain this. However they are coming here. It’s too many people. And we have fewer and fewer police and horrible traffic. Water issues in the horizon. It’s too much. We are going to be in a real mess in a decade. A huge mess. And people are worried about shit that might happen in 200 years to the climate. We may just run out of water and be fucked.

Tan My around the corner is much better, it's actually the best pho in Austin.  When I heard a car had run through a pho place in North Austin near the Target at Ohlen Road, I was screaming in my head "NOOOOO, please don't let it be Tan My."

I mean, it still sucks for Pho Van of course, but ya know...

I’m going to have to disagree with you.

Pho Phung Luu is the best pho in Austin.

I doubt it but I'll give it a try.  Every time someone suggests a place I haven't tried, I'm always willing to try it, but inevitably when I go there I'm disappointed and wish I'd just gone to Tan My instead.

If you're using gummies, you aren't sober.

I get that. They are non-TCH ones for pain and such. I am proud not to have taken a drink since April 24, 2022. I wish I had the same luck with cigarettes. That’s harder to quit. I miss them more than alcohol. But yeah I get the sober/not sober thing. I’m just a hell of a lot happier and functional.

The real question (didn’t want to start a thread) is where is Kate Middleton? Maybe she is hiding out in Austin?

That whole story is odd af. Hasn’t been seen or heard from since January 16th for a planned abdominal surgery and isn’t going to make an appearance until after Easter. Bizarre. The internet is full of the best memes. story is really catching fire and the palace keeps saying fuck off we told you she ain’t coming back until after Easter. Meanwhile Charles has actual cancer and is making appearances. Odd shit. Maybe she’s the Rainey ripper?

My wife is Vietnamese and has been here in US for 5 years.  She swears that this is better than most places back in Vietnam.

Austin is dumb. Let’s try shit that ain’t working other places like with the police or be a sanctuary city or do this or that. Or fuck up I35 or go crazy vet bike lanes and other transit that isn’t going to work and have a ramped homeless issue and have more people than resources like water!

Yet they still prosecute the shit out of DUIs.

Thank goodness everyone made it out! Fuck. No alarms. wtf?

AUSTIN (KXAN) — People who lost their homes in a Feb. 1 apartment fire in south Austin are sharing their story about that night, as the city’s fire department is providing more details about why it never received reports of the smoke alarms sounding off during the blaze.

On the morning of the fire, many residents said they did not hear the smoke alarms ringing to alert them about the fire. Many people were woken up by either their neighbors or first responders slamming on their doors.

That’s how Ali Shammar was awoken that early morning. “I just heard someone knocking on the door. I didn’t hear anything I was just sleeping,” Shammar explained.

I think you're responsible for keeping fresh batteries in your apartment smoke detectors.

Those fucking things do an amazingly annoying job of reminding you when they are low on battery. Either the detectors were defective or the people somehow miraculously lived for weeks (I'm guessing weeks, don't know because that shit makes me change the batteries immediately) through the constant beeping.

If it was something “real” I think they would put it out like Charles, at least at a high level.

My thought is it is something like a tummy tuck and skin or fat removal.   Not sure after pregnancies if she returned to prior size and shape, but those surgeries take a lot of recovery and you are laid up for a while to recover.  And they can be done in stages if needed including follow up cosmetic surgery if needed which makes recovery longer.

No shame in getting it for most people who don’t have to pretend to be an icon,  but it is elective and I can see people jumping on her for it otherwise.

All I know is that William has been able to hang out and enjoy some guilt-free pegging from his mistress while Kate's away, so good for Will!

Sorry for your loss, but I mean c'mon...the train joke was right there.

csb/ My mom was just here for the first time in about a year.  And she's having memory issues but was actually more cognitive than the last time I saw her but physically worse.  Anyway, like a lotta folks her age...she can remember these random facts or events from decades ago but can't remember what happened an hour ago.  But she was actually doing better this time because her last visit in 2023, she screamed at me that I was born on May 21st.  "I know when you were born, I gave birth to you!"  I was born on May 27, or so the Germans would have us believe.  Anyway, she visited the girls a lot over the years whenever her health and schedule would allow from Chicago.  So he brings up, "Hey, what ever happened to that little train they used to have in the park?"  Now she never went on it with our girls because we only took the oldest on there once or twice, just the wife and I.  Then it was shut down after we had our youngest plus Covid plus just City of Austin fuckups.  So I'm genuinely wishing that maybe later in 2024, Grandma can come down and ride it with the girls.  But then I remembered, we're in Austin.  We'll fuck it up again.

I know what sight I am on. Don't live in Austin anymore so did not know about this shit. Replacing the old little one? Why not the trams as well?

How is it powered? Patchouli oil? Or a modern version of this bad ass?

Old timey train >> new boring train
Who's idea was it to make the new one look like a utilitarian modern freight train engine.

The same people’s idea who couldn’t figure out how to build and operate a miniature train.

Okay.....so in the various state house races, which are the GQP races that we should watch to see if the nutbar Paxton/MAGA challengers take out incumbents?  I know to watch Dade Phelan's race, but which others should I be watching?

Also, I'll be watching the three TX Ct of Criminal Appeals races to see how the incumbents do because Paxton is made at them for following the law.

Probably a better thread for your question?

Anyone voting the Austin DA race will be voting on the dem ballot.
