Running thread of white people calling cops on people of color for everyday stuff...

Why would you assume that?

I assume that most people in leadership are not racists until they do something that is racist.  Do you start on the assumption that most people are racist and then change your mind when they are not?  That seems backwards.

Yeah the white guy should have ended the call to the cops but I can’t see any specific racism in this story or video. And I would assume that a YouTube exec wouldn’t be a racist but maybe he is. I don’t know.

But it’s also convenient that a self described activist runs into a “racist” calling the cops on him, and the activist decides for himself and apparently the internet that the white guy is a racist abd deserves to be punished.

I still can’t tell what the entire story or outrage is.

And again the heavy.com story is wrong to bring the young child into it.

Huh? You glossed over the specific act that is accused of being racist. Not 100% but it’s arguable he didn’t end it bc the dude was not white. Also, not 100% but arguable that if the dude waiting was white, guy never would have looked twice or called the cops (hint, thread title should have clue’d you in). So yeah take away the core issues, what’s the prob?! No shit.

agree slightly that the activist is “deciding” for us but again, please see thread title. Thread and last few posts would not exist if the people who had the cops called on them were not minorities. You can’t gloss over the Crux of the issue and say “I don’t see anything wrong”. That said, there might be legit reasons for calling cops on some of the folk but I highly doubt any of those kind of videos have been posted here. Least I don’t remember any of the top of my head

As do I. But most normal people I know also mind their own business, wouldn’t be calling the cops on anyone. This busy body shit seems specific to “oh, a black person is here? They obviously don’t belong, if they don’t answer my questions on why they’re here then call the cops!” Who the fuck are you civilian?! You have no right to question shit from me, bitch!

And that is the disconnect. And hence purpose of this thread. White peoples do shit normal people do, life goes on, cool. Minorities do the same but not only is it “okay” to question them  about the validity of their intentions, if the person doesn’t receive a satisfactory answer, call people who shoot to kill before risking breaking a nail? Get out my business.

Still not one video of the police caller being unfairly maligned, and this is a 23 page, fifty post per thread.

Do we actually know what occurred prior to the video?  My guess is that the white guy is asking the guy recording, who we assume must be black, that he, the black guy, needs to dial his friend in the building in order to get in.  And the black guy refuses to dial his friend but still wants to get into the building.

I believe that calling the police is a bit over the top but what is the best method to stop someone who appears to have no business in your building, or acts suspicious when called out. Do you physically restrain someone, do you follow them, do you shrug your shoulders hoping everything turns out ok, do you call security or the police.

I work in a small office building where only employees should be there, or visitors that have checked in.  If I see a non-employee (no badge) waiting for the door to be unlocked and they walk in, I’m supposed to escort them to the security.  If they refused to do that, I believe I’m supposed to get security or potentially call the police.  Is that racist, if the person is not white and I am?

I don’t assume anything about people based on the level of mediocrity they’ve achieved or the specific company they work for.

There have been racist presidents and non-racist homeless people.

My question wasn’t about the assumption of racism, my question was why would you make any personal assumptions based on their executive level, their industry, or more specifically as you stated, the company they work for?

We don’t know, that is true. Could the filmer been a major dick? Sure. But you are still skirting the issue that if the filmer wasn’t black, the dude would have just kept walking.

and maybe it is a building like your small office complex, definitely possible. See a non-employee, anyone at all, escort them. That’s fair. But... without more info, I’m guessing that is not the case. Anyone free to assume the opposite, logically.

Bc of business building restrictions like yours we might get perfectly fine situations accused of racism where there was no intent but none on this thread fit that description (so far). They might happen going forward, and maybe this specific one does, but I’m willing to give the filmer the benefit of the doubt without more info, but that’s just me. And more so, if only bc I personally believe that people Need to mind their own unless they’re the literal owners.

I wouldn’t think that a leader in a global tech company is racist.   I could be 100% wrong and this guy runs the Klan in SF.
Could a racist rise in the ranks to run a large organization today?  Possible but it’s most likely than not that he’s not a racist.

But why?

Tech is one of the whitest and malest industries around. Especially at the executive level.

You’re literally basing your assumption on some imaginary utopia.

No one is saying the dude is walking around Silicon Valley in a white hood.

But do I believe a TechBro could see a black guy standing outside his apartment building and think “he doesn’t belong” even though he knows nothing about the guy beyond what he looks like?

Yep.

Doesn’t mean he’s a klan member and calling people the N word. It means he made a snap judgment based on a racial stereotype.

And that’s shitty. And completely believable.

Part of the problem is the definition of racist.  There are those that actively pursue an agenda of subjugating people of color.  Then there are those that are racially insensitive, but don't actively wish harm on POC.  There are also those who may indulge subconscious racial stereotypes, but again don't actively wish harm on POC.  All of these can be called "racist."  Particularly on the last one, probably everybody is a little bit racist.

Some of these people are the first type, some are the last, some are somewhere in between.  It's unfortunate that a completely poisonous term is applied to all of them.

And yeah, you can't make any assumptions about who may demonstrate some racist tendencies or behavior.  Because everyone has it in them at some level; humans are hardwired that way, and it's difficult to completely eradicate.  And if you are in an environment that doesn't foster some self-examination on these issues, it's that much harder to eradicate.

That's not to excuse any of it.  The less active "racists" can be just as harmful and possibly moreso than the active ones, who are easily marginalized.  The subconscious "racists" won't realize that they are building bias into all kinds of systems.

Yes thank you! That’s what I’m getting at.

The hooded klan member who runs around screaming slurs is MUCH easier to deal with. Everyone agrees that he’s gross and very, very few people defend that behavior.

The quiet or passive racism is much harder to call out - like this example. You’ve got people giving him the benefit of the doubt solely based on assumption that a racist couldn’t possibly be a tech executive.

Which is bullshit.

The aforementioned screaming klan guy wouldn’t. But the quiet guy? Most definitely.

Maybe it’s the word “racist” that makes people so quick to defend these actions. That’s a big word.

It’s like when a man in a professional setting calls me “honey” - it’s not SEXIST but it’s sexist. And tiresome.

Calling the cops on black people minding their business is bigoted and prejudiced.

Stop with the stereotypes.  I assume that someone that moves up in an organization is smart and knows how to use their resources, including not using race to make decisions.  And besides I thought google was accused of being overly progressive from people on the right.  Now you’re arguing they’re racist and/or sexist.

I will admit that as a white guy, if I had some disagreement with someone that wasn’t white, and they pulled out their phone camera and accused me of racism, I’m running the other way.  Do whatever you want, I don’t want to be doxxed and called a racist.

Why does it matter that the kid appears in the video without his face blurred? I always see someone make that comment when a video is posted involving children but I don't understand it.

Because somewhere there is a pervert waiting for a kid to be on video to jerk off. That or it could cause the kid problems at school/life.

It's that damned word "racist."  We really need to come up with some rubric for the "accidental" racists that doesn't have quite the baggage of racist.

But yeah, some guy that comes up through finance/accounting, or even engineering, probably isn't going to have many opportunities to confront racism, his own or anyone else's, explicit or subtle/subconcious, so it might not be surprising for something to slip out.

If you aren’t an employee or aren’t sporting a visitor badge, you have no business on company property. All visitors sign in and get a pass. Everyone without that gets security or the police called on them.

And again, there might be legit situations. But almost all of the ones on this thread look like they involve some dude just hanging by a door waiting. That’s it. We can’t assume they  were there reading bible verses nor were they using a screw driver to crack the lock. Just sitting there is the baseline but they get questioned?! And if they don’t answer some random cunt, with usurped authority, they get trigger happy cops called? That’s fucked up!

each situation different but if you see someone doing fucked up shit, I think you’re ok asking. If you see someone just being a normal human being, might want to re-evaluate your outlook. This shit ain’t hard.

Yes that makes sense when applied across the board but THAT IS WHAT THIS THREAD is exactly about bc the premise is white folk would not have the visitor badge and probably just get in along fine. Deinfitely get in? Who knows but this THREAD EXISTS bc the minorities are getting fucking trigger happy cops called on them for shit that whites don’t. Both “breaking the rules” but only one group is threatened by busy bodies with guns and death. Why is that? Hmmm...

Yeah that’s a hard no.  And it’s typically an Ivory Coast immigrant at the shack telling you to get fucked if you don’t have your pass, and the secretary isn’t answering the verification call.  Guess he’s just racist against whites?

The office building is made up of one company. If you’re not an employee/contractor or not there to meet one, you don’t have any business being there.   And if you’re there to meet someone you have to remain in the “public” area at the security desk.

I’m not saying your building specific, i’m saying this building in question. You said criteria as if it was known, but since assuming none of us does know the criteria, why assume the filmer fit the criteria to not be there? Makes no sense

Not sure what you mean.  But they both spoke about an intercom system to reach out to residents or tenants, which strongly implies a locked front door requiring the tenant to buzz someone in.  Or do you think that it could imply something else?

Or is the story that a black guy was just standing outside a building when an exiting white guy with his son decided to call the police on him for the hell of it.    Maybe that is exactly how it went down but that’s a weird encounter.

Question for the crowd.  If your building has a policy to not allow strangers to follow tenants thru the secure door, is it your right as a tenant to prevent someone from doing so?   Now one path is to inform the stranger of the rule, and then go about your day. That is how I would handle it but I can see someone wondering if the stranger will just follow the next person in, who may not be diligent about the rules. Now if the stranger is already inside the building and won’t leave, I’m not sure of the next step to take.

i really can’t imagine calling the cops in this scenario, and I that is extreme which I know is the point of this thread.  I do think it’s fairly aggressive when someone starts to film an encounter. It would piss me off if someone accused me of racism and then started filming me.

i also would pause to call the cops on someone unless they are acting very suspiciously.

Could be wrong, sure. But please review the thread. I can’t think of a single post that I was like “yeah that person had a totally non racial reason for calling trigger happy cops”.  Setting aside the fact that one could talk it out, calling the cops to settle a non criminal matter where we know cops shoot minorities bc a day ends in y, if your building has a policy, is it your job? If ain’t, or has leeway on the policy, who the  lfuck are you to judge the criteria?! Agreed informing and moving on is best bet. Calling killer cops is not a good faith based option

What do you mean judge the criteria? I don’t know you mean by that?

For me, I would only call cops in a situation if I knew a crime had been committed or someone was acting suspiciously and I didn’t feel comfortable intervening myself.  Trespassing in a building with many tenants doesn’t seem to quite bit that level.  Obviously if someone barged past me into my own house and wouldn’t leave, then I wouldn’t have reservations about calling the cops to help me remove a stranger from my living room.

Now if the argument is that a non-white person should never have the cops called on them for any reason because the cops will kill that person, I don’t know what to say about that idea. It seems a bit extreme as well. Perhaps it should be included in the thought process.

We get schooled on this constantly where I work. No "tailgating", if you see someone with no badge ask them who they are etc... If you're uncomfortable with putting yourself into a position then at a minimum call security. All that said, confronting someone OUTSIDE of the building, referring to the apartment building, is going out of your way and not in a good way in my opinion but to each his own. Maybe the guy thought the right thing to do was to at least attempt to deny access at all. My personality is less confrontational, I'd have not argued or said a word if they tried to tailgate in but would have gone straight to security or called the cops once inside if I thought something was odd.

i'm not saying the last paragraph in the last post is accurate; not at all. i'm responding to the section in the first post. what is your criteria for determining "someone who appears to have no business in your building"? who has business there and who doesn't if someone is just standing there waiting? without knowing more (and i could be wrong since only going on the filmer's viewpoint), that the dude calling the cops in this situation had no basis for thinking the filmer had no business standing there aside from the fact the filmer was a minority. but yes, there is a lot of info missing before the video started. are there any news stories out there on this? would clear up some info for sure.

so i'm asking you, aside from your small business complex where any and all non-badge wearing people are obviously escorted everywhere regardless of their skin color and no badge equals automatic escort at all times, what should be done in most places that have more lax rules on what qualifies as someone having "no business in the building"? not every complex or building is like yours, rules vary as they are want to be. but you asked how to deal with unsavory characters so i'm asking you, how do you determine what is an unsavory character that has "no business in the building"? what separates those people from people who are just sitting there waiting for a friend who took a long poo? a friend that had a long phone call and will be down in a couple minutes? how do you determine that a person has no business there when the rules are not so clear cut?

as for acting suspicious, if you don't have a badge or name on the deed, i'll tell you to suck my dick 24/7, regardless of the situation. who the fuck are you (the royal you, not you the poster) to question why i'm there unless you are a cop or the owner?

Still not one video of the police caller being unfairly maligned, and this is a 23 page, fifty post per thread.

I’m not sure that I agree with you.

I have had several confrontations in my life. Some deserved, some blown out of proportion and some completely out of left field. Never once have I contemplated whipping out my phone to document the incident. That includes incidents that have occurred simply because a POC thought that I had “privilege” and has openly admitted that to being the root of the issue. I deal with it, shrug it off, perhaps stew on it and eventually move on. I think most people, regardless of color, take the same tact rather than claim to expose behaviors with the added benefit of internet fame. People suck.

We can ALL agree that POC have experienced prejudice and racism in 2019. What we are doing as a response is creating yet another category of hate and spite towards white people. If you disagree with a POC, you risk having your life ruined. If you suspect a POC of engaging in a potentially illegal or illicit act, falsely or accurately, you risk having your life ruined. The unanswerable question of whether or not a white person would have received the same treatment in the video is a hypothetical. We will never know if race was a factor. What we do know is the video taker actively seeks out “social injustice” to fan his own flames. Maybe he got lucky, maybe we are experiencing part of the problem or maybe we are seeing what he wants us to see. In either case, the narrative has been shifted: We are now judging white people by the color of their skin. I’m not sure that’s the best path to trying to level the playing field.

i'm not saying the last paragraph in the last post is accurate; not at all. i'm responding to the section in the first post. what is your criteria for determining "someone who appears to have no business in your building"? who has business there and who doesn't if someone is just standing there waiting? without knowing more (and i could be wrong since only going on the filmer's viewpoint), that the dude calling the cops in this situation had no basis for thinking the filmer had no business standing there aside from the fact the filmer was a minority. but yes, there is a lot of info missing before the video started. are there any news stories out there on this? would clear up some info for sure.

so i'm asking you, aside from your small business complex where any and all non-badge wearing people are obviously escorted everywhere regardless of their skin color and no badge equals automatic escort at all times, what should be done in most places that have more lax rules on what qualifies as someone having "no business in the building"? not every complex or building is like yours, rules vary as they are want to be. but you asked how to deal with unsavory characters so i'm asking you, how do you determine what is an unsavory character that has "no business in the building"? what separates those people from people who are just sitting there waiting for a friend who took a long poo? a friend that had a long phone call and will be down in a couple minutes? how do you determine that a person has no business there when the rules are not so clear cut?

as for acting suspicious, if you don't have a badge or name on the deed, i'll tell you to suck my dick 24/7, regardless of the situation. who the fuck are you (the royal you, not you the poster) to question why i'm there unless you are a cop or the owner?

If an unknown person tailgates their way into the building, then the tenant paying rent, or owner has a right to ask them if they are a tenant/owner or there to see someone else. If it’s the latter, it’s fair to ask them to call their friend/associate. If they refuse, then they can get the fuck out of the building as it’s not a public space. The color of their skin doesn’t matter. When you’re the visitor, you don’t have a right to tell the tenant/owner it’s none of their business because it’s the definition of their business on who you are there to see.

you don’t have a right to tailgate because a friend rents/owns a place.  Your friend has the right to be there.  100%.  You have a right to be buzzed or escorted in. And if someone calls you out because you tailgated your way in, then it’s fair to ask that person who they are, but it doesn’t change the fact you are breaking an obvious rule.

And even if the filming guy did the above and refused to leave the building, calling the cops is extreme.  However as we’ve all agreed, there is a huge amount of context missing in this story. We don’t know what was said or done prior to the video. Even the guy filming gave out little info, at least as of last night. His story is that a white guy called the cops on him for being a black guy waiting n a friend.  That’s not much detail. Now if that is the whole story, I’m on the side of the guy filming.

i am interested to see how google/YouTube respond to the story today. I guess they have to say something if this is taking on any traction.

so what did we decide?  is the youtube exec a full blown david duke racist or just a semi-racist asshole?

How about he was just a dumb jerk that let his unease with a black dude in his building escalate. His kid showed more sense then he did.
