Running thread of white people calling cops on people of color for everyday stuff...

Question for the crowd.  If your building has a policy to not allow strangers to follow tenants thru the secure door, is it your right as a tenant to prevent someone from doing so?   Now one path is to inform the stranger of the rule, and then go about your day. That is how I would handle it but I can see someone wondering if the stranger will just follow the next person in, who may not be diligent about the rules. Now if the stranger is already inside the building and won’t leave, I’m not sure of the next step to take.

i really can’t imagine calling the cops in this scenario, and I that is extreme which I know is the point of this thread.  I do think it’s fairly aggressive when someone starts to film an encounter. It would piss me off if someone accused me of racism and then started filming me.

i also would pause to call the cops on someone unless they are acting very suspiciously.

i don't know. how about mind your own fucking business. i mean, if someone is trying to jimmy open the mailboxes, yeah, call the cops. that's suspicious activity. standing in a lobby? fuck that shit. i ain't got time for 20 questions with someone just standing in an atrium.

this dude called the cops on a guy because the guy didn't want to buzz his friend or disclose her name to a stranger. fuck that guy. his poor son. that was heartbreaking.

the nerve of that building to have a locked door. why is it the tenant's and owners' business who wants to wait in the secure lobby. bunch of racists.

seriously. why give a fuck?

the other day, a buddy of mine and i were trying to gain access to a secure building to visit a friend's apartment. we were expected, but couldn't remember the code. phoned the friend, no answer - friend was busy cooking. so we waited and tried to find the code in old text messages, with no success.

other residents came and opened the door for us, and let us in. nobody tried to call the cops on us for accessing the building.

of course, we are white dudes, so...

I just don't think anyone appreciates how hard it is to be a white man in America. Thank god there are safe spaces like this thread where we can all bitch and moan about how powerful the minorities are and that they are all out to get us.

Or is the story that a black guy was just standing outside a building when an exiting white guy with his son decided to call the police on him for the hell of it.    Maybe that is exactly how it went down but that’s a weird encounter.

That's exactly what the story says happened. Why are you railing about your secure office building and people who want to enter without a badge? That's not what happened here. Guy is standing outside the building waiting on a friend. White guy interrogates him, and tells him to push the call button to the friends apartment (which makes no sense since he said the friend was coming to meet him there). Guy keeps interrogating for no reason whatsoever. Then calls the cops and says there is a "trespasser" even though they are still outside the building. Friend shows up and asks wtf? Have you read a story of different events, or are you just inserting hypotheticals for the sake of argument? Because if he had forced his way into the building without a code and without the friend, things would be very different.

Also, this thread is entirely about these types of encounters, which you call "weird," because they should be weird. But they happen a lot to minorities, for no good reason. Do you think you have the right to interrogate someone on the street outside your building just because you feel suspicious? The first question would probably be fine. Why did he not accept the explanation "I'm waiting for my friend who lives here?" Why is that not good enough? And to tell the cops that he's a "trespasser" even though they're still outside? Seriously, fuck this guy. I don't know if you're really trying to stand up for him or if you are just going off on something else for another reason.

Actually the facts are not well known. We can only infer what happened but it appears that the guy filming tailgated into the building and the white guy wanted him to either leave or call his friend. The guy filming, who I assume must be black based on who posted it, said he didn't have to.  Yes, ultimately the encounters ends up outside but that isn't how it started.

I agree the white guy overreacted and should have moved on.  BUT this isn't a story about a black guy standing on the sidewalk being harassed for being black.  So STFU that I'm saying this was ok because I've said nothing except the opposite.

I have had several confrontations in my life. Some deserved, some blown out of proportion and some completely out of left field. Never once have I contemplated whipping out my phone to document the incident. That includes incidents that have occurred simply because a POC thought that I had “privilege” and has openly admitted that to being the root of the issue. I deal with it, shrug it off, perhaps stew on it and eventually move on. I think most people, regardless of color, take the same tact rather than claim to expose behaviors with the added benefit of internet fame. People suck.

We can ALL agree that POC have experienced prejudice and racism in 2019. What we are doing as a response is creating yet another category of hate and spite towards white people. If you disagree with a POC, you risk having your life ruined. If you suspect a POC of engaging in a potentially illegal or illicit act, falsely or accurately, you risk having your life ruined. The unanswerable question of whether or not a white person would have received the same treatment in the video is a hypothetical. We will never know if race was a factor. What we do know is the video taker actively seeks out “social injustice” to fan his own flames. Maybe he got lucky, maybe we are experiencing part of the problem or maybe we are seeing what he wants us to see. In either case, the narrative has been shifted: We are now judging white people by the color of their skin. I’m not sure that’s the best path to trying to level the playing field.

first paragraph, yes people suck. of all creeds colors and races, no disagreement there. and i too have been in sorta the same situations, but opposite end. you know how many times white people ask for info at restaurants or bars simply cause i'm mexican?! i could have a drink in my hand or just been staring at the overhead menu, nope, see my skin color and bam assume i'm working. but i shrug and walk away although it happens once every couple months. hell, this past friday during my lunch break this liquor store owner, to be fair he was south asian but i couldn't tell you from where exactly, sorta kept eyeing me while i looked through his bourbon collection on park and 23rd.  casual friday, you know the city was hot and humid, so i wore shorts and a tshirt to work. i'm minding my own but dude keeps asking if i'm looking for anything in particular and i'm not since his collection was sub-par and anything good was astronomically priced. anyway, as i'm about to head out he goes, "hey you need a job? you got any friends that do? if you do let me know, can always need a guy or friends like you". so yeah, shit happens. although if he had better prices or selection, shit i might take him up on a 5hr work week, fucking bourbon prices are insane in the city.

as to your second paragraph, you've been saying the same thing since the onset of the thread (or damn near the beginning). don't think it was true then and still don't see a video here to support that "narrative shift".  I will say that you have a valid viewpoint that may be considered down the road since i personally don't want to be part of a group think that creates "yet another category of hate and spite towards" anyone, but i stand by the assertion that we aren't there yet. Twenty four pages of vids and mostly surly bs, and still not aware of any of those vids were the "filmee" was unfairly maligned. You raise a point that I think should be considered but that is also not even close to being near its tipping point IMO.

If an unknown person tailgates their way into the building, then the tenant paying rent, or owner has a right to ask them if they are a tenant/owner or there to see someone else. If it’s the latter, it’s fair to ask them to call their friend/associate. If they refuse, then they can get the fuck out of the building as it’s not a public space. The color of their skin doesn’t matter. When you’re the visitor, you don’t have a right to tell the tenant/owner it’s none of their business because it’s the definition of their business on who you are there to see.

you don’t have a right to tailgate because a friend rents/owns a place.  Your friend has the right to be there.  100%.  You have a right to be buzzed or escorted in. And if someone calls you out because you tailgated your way in, then it’s fair to ask that person who they are, but it doesn’t change the fact you are breaking an obvious rule.

And even if the filming guy did the above and refused to leave the building, calling the cops is extreme.  However as we’ve all agreed, there is a huge amount of context missing in this story. We don’t know what was said or done prior to the video. Even the guy filming gave out little info, at least as of last night. His story is that a white guy called the cops on him for being a black guy waiting n a friend.  That’s not much detail. Now if that is the whole story, I’m on the side of the guy filming.

i am interested to see how google/YouTube respond to the story today. I guess they have to say something if this is taking on any traction.

agree to disagree on whether a tenant has the right to ask. this might be an nyc thing so an owner, i'll give some more leeway. (i say some cause not sure i run into too many building owners. you mean like a condo?). for a doorman, i will definitely answer no hesitation. but a tenant, not so much. maybe in the rest of the country i guess the tenant can ask if they suddenly get some kind of unassigned self bestowed sense of ownership in common areas but if the entering person gives a general normal answer, seems like most level headed folk should let it go IMO.  Otherwise, this dude is veering close to that crazy psycho blonde bitch who stood in the doorway, followed the dude to his apartment, and still hounded him after HE PUT IN HIS APT KEY. honestly, that chick and this dude are both on the same spectrum of "fucked up" as tenants. she had no right and without more info i'm leaning hard towards most tenants don't either in normal circumstances. Sure context matters but in most cases i'm going with people should mind their business.

as for specifically people tailgating in, maybe i'd feel different if i wasn't in nyc, but there are too many people going in and out of most non-doorman buildings. and buildings with doorman, if a tenant gave me any kind of question...oh boy. phone would be out on the quickness. maybe cause its nyc or i just don't really hit up condo buildings but unless you are doing suspicious shit, people generally know better (although there was that one chick in bk a couple months back). but hey, maybe its different around the country with different time priorities and communities. I think i see where you're coming from on tailgating but in a city that is always in a hurry, with deliveries of all kinds at all hours of the day, if a non doorman tried to stop me from going in, almost definitely I'm going to think bc of the color of my skin. A doorman asks, sure no problem sir, here is my info, name, ID if you need it, whatever. but a tenant? hell nah. it aint there fucking job.

yeah, any more info on this story? i saw it hit most outlets like yahoo, google news, etc but no real follow up.

My personal experiences with events that ended up in the news cycle was that what actually happened had six degrees of separation from what was reported. It's really difficult to report what happened, and if you bring less than a thorough devotion to the who, what, when, where, and why of the event, then shit gets out of hand quickly.

So this Cukor fellow thought he was a potential murderer (according to him) and decided to stand there and argue with him with his child nearby.

My father was murdered outside his home by a trespasser who he confronted alone. For my child’s safety, my safety and that of the building, I felt it was necessary to get help in this situation. Furthermore, I’ve encountered trespassers in my building and we’ve been robbed several times. This is not uncommon in San Francisco and the bad actors are all different colors.

so....your unique history is that your father was murdered by a trespasser who he confronted alone?

so your course of action in this situation, when you encounter a black man at your building, who you surmise MIGHT be a murderer or a robber, is to CONFRONT HIM ALONE WITH YOUR CHILD?

sorry, dude, that doesn't work for me. you think danger is imminent you don't stand there and argue with danger while your kid is standing right there.

unless you want to turn your kid into batman, i guess.

the thing is, it's not that unbelievable a story, if he was acting at all frightened, instead of a smug douchebag. nothing about his demeanor indicated that he thought he was in danger. everything about that whole video was "i'm going to show this guy."

More "facts" are produced:

  • As discussed, the guy filming did try to enter the building by bypassing the security door.  He tailgated into the building and didn't want to be called out about it.
  • sounds like the filmer was friends of a guest of the resident of the building and the resident wasn't expecting him.  (did he even know the name of the resident?)

https://medium.com/@chriscukor/one-conversation-two-histories-my-perspective-on-an-incident-in-a-san-francisco-doorway-ad2a5a1701d

I get that some cities or neighborhoods may have people commonly bypass security by tailgating but that doesn't mean every building norm allows it. And it's bs for anyone to say that a resident can't ask questions of someone that bypassed security.  Or ask them to follow the rules that the residents agreed to.  It's not minding your own business when your home security is at stake.

While the white guy overreacted with the cops, it started with someone that didn't want to follow the security rules of a building, and when called out about it, he refused to act mature about it. We've all intentionally or accidentally cut in a line. If called out, I think most of us comply with the group and not call the other person a racist and create a scene. Hopefully the filmer has learned a life lesson about this.

Irrational?

Unnecessary?

Bullshit?

Irrational, yes. Unnecessary, yes. Bullshit, maybe, I can believe the part about him trying to enter behind someone. Calling the cops and claiming he's a trespasser is the problem. There are a number of other ways to handle it. Is he racist? Maybe. Maybe it's some implicit bias that he's not willing to admit. There is no way to know if he would act the same way if the guy was white. In my opinion, the odds are pretty good that if it were a white guy the beginning of the interaction might be the same but there would be no cop calls and accusations of trespassing.

I've worked in and live in buildings that had locked/secure doors. There's a general expectation to not let "shady looking" people into the building if they don't have a fob/card. The problem with that is "shady" for most means obviously homeless. But for many others "shady" refers to the shade of the person's skin. I bet that 98% of white people who weren't dressed like homeless dudes would be let in by people standing in the lobby, and no one would even think to ask "who are you here to visit?".

Even if you think that this guy is trying to sneak through and is up to no good, there are more polite ways of addressing it. He could have said "hey man, i hate to do this to you, and please don't take offense, but we're not supposed to let people in. Do you mind waiting for whoever it is you're going to see outside, or for them to buzz you up?" instead of calling the cops and characterizing him as a "tresspasser".

Well except he didn’t initially call the cops. The guy filming refused to go back outside or call a resident.  Then after he refused to leave the building, the white guy called the cops. I think that was extreme but if there isn’t onsite security, your only other options are to let it go or physically toss the guy out. the latter is a horrible option regardless whether you can overpower someone or not.

Minding your business is so damn hard.

Had an incident in my building a week ago. I am waiting in the lobby for some food to be delivered while swiping on tinder, minding my business. Some lady walks by and starts firmly telling me not to prop the door open, not quite a yell but louder than normal tone. I reply "what". She comes over and shuts the door firmly and asks what am I doing. I said waiting for food and it isn't your business. Still sitting down waiting and she just stood there wasting her time asking me if I lived there and when I moved in type of bullshit. I said yea I live here and chill out I didn't prop the door open so go on her way. I left my keys in place because I was just gonna wait for a minute so I couldn't show her that. She gets all pissed and calls security. We have a cop on premise so he comes and we know each other cause he is from the grove also. He tells her to stop bothering me and go on her way. She then asks if he is gonna verify my info and walk to my apt to verify. WTF lady.

tldr: nosy white people love being nosy white people and I have no doubt that if some dorky ass white dude like Vic was there she wouldn't have said shit

Holy shit, a white security guard who has probably harassed multiple blacks and hispanics in the past is about to go to prison for pulling a gun on a black man.  Plus he looks like he can handle himself in a brawl about as well as Stephen Hawking.  What awaits this guy in prison is punishment enough.  He's half-cop, half-racist, and fully stupid.  He's gonna get the shit beat and raped out of him every single week for the next 5-10 years.

How the fuck did that get a gun to begin with?  And that cop is so cool about it, by the elevator-he could have easily grabbed that asshole and beat the fuck out of him and been perfectly within his rights to do so.  Shit he could have tased the kid in the balls and then let the elevator continuously hit his scrotum over and over again until help arrived.

lulz at this one.  rent-a-cop draws down on (black) actual cop because actual cop has a gun.

Well, that’s on the cop. You’d think he’d have learned, from his police training, rule #1: don’t be black. So, it’s clearly his fault.

The real crime there was committed by Blart’s boss. He should be charged as an accessory for hiring an unqualified to possess a firearm person.

Yeah, and his job training regiment appears to have consisted of, "And if anybody suspicious looking comes near the wall of pre-printed forms, unholster your service weapon!  Those are our only copies, we can't just print more or send electronic versions to people.  Defend the Document Wall!  Wall of Docs or Death!"
