The book is still being written on his place in Longhorn lore, but given the circumstances, 4th and 13 is probably one of the top 5 greatest passes in program history.

Well, let's see:

  1. You got that pass back in the '40s to Noble Doss
  2. The tipped pass game winner against UCLA
  3. The 4th down against Arkansas
  4. The 4th down against Notre Dame
  5. The game winner to Cash v. OU in 1989

Others receiving votes: Johnny Walker v. Arkansas in 1987ish, Applewhite to McGarrity for 97 yards.   What else?

Seriously dude. Those were fun plays.

This one saved the fucking game that would have ended the season and kept National Championship chances alive.

It’s more significant than 3, 4 and 5 plus your Honorable Mentions combined, x’s 1,000

You can contribute by adding to the list.  Also, we don't win the MNC in 1969 without 3 & 4.  Did you know that? Thanks.

My mistake…I had the wrong Arkansas game. Was thinking Tony Jones.  And was thinking 18 Wheeler Notre Dame not Cotton Bowl.

We all agree that the top 3 are ‘69 Arkansas ‘70 Cotton Bowl and ‘06 Rose.

4th and 13 was the most significant since then and at least to date, belongs on that Rushmore

Disagree and these were on the last page

Colt to Crosby 2009 Fiesta Bowl 16 second left. I could see putting last night above this one, but I think it's debatable.

VY to Limas Sweed last minute at #3 OSU. This was basically a playoff game and OSU only lost to PSU #4 at end of season. Texas went on the win the National Championship. If Ewers beats OSU and win the National championship, these are 4A and 4B, but not until he does.

I’ll give you Sweed…even though that was September with the rest of the season to play

And loved Colt to Quan of course but the stakes were higher yesterday so this already surpasses that at least in my book.

Yesterday, that play fails the season is unequivocally OVER. That sets it apart from a lot of other contenders

If Riley Leonard was our QB we would've missed the 3 kicks, not gotten any of those turnovers, and our defense would be allowing Stockton to move the ball up and down the field on us.

Notre Dame is much better than we are at converting red zone trips into touchdowns, so technically they wouldn’t have to rely on their kicker as much as we do.

Texas had been FUPM 10 win season teams since 2005 prior to the Fiesta Bowl. We needed that game badly and it set up next year's run. It was over win or lose. So I'll call it a push.

As for the OSU game, Texas loses and there is zero chance OSU with a single lost to PSU and the B1G championship doesn't get in over Texas. So, in effect while earlier in season it was a play off game, against the #3 team (then and at end of season) team that had been second only to USC in domination. With the world as it was then it definitely was a playoff level win against a better opponent at their house that nobody thought Texas would win.

I put that above victory over a good but not great ASU team particularly since the book isn't written on this season yet. That last aspect is why I currently put the OSU victory by Colt ahead of a playoff win. The ASU play will surpass Colts play if we make the Final, imo.

No offense but you are old.

It's 2024 , I'm no spring chicken (42) and I barely remember Ricky winning the Heisman.

At my age group it's

1. 4th and 5

2. Walk off field goal vs A&M

3. Wait 1 second Nebraska

4. 4th and 13

5. Bevo nearly spearing Ugga and the ensuing beat down

QB game winning passes is the subject. Further more, the field goal against Michigan in the Rose Bowl by Dusty Mangum is absolutely ahead of the win over aggie. Get your history book open, take notes and please try and keep up.

If number 2 is about the 1970 UCLA game there was no “tipped” pass.

It was a perfect throw from Phillips to Speyer on a crossing route.

It was never tipped.

That's Quinn and Sark killing it, imo. That it was an audible option, Sark. That Quinn read the coverage, called the audible and executed it flawlessly, 100% Quinn.

Not many people who criticize Ewers here disagree with that take. While I do agree, it doesn't mean he's not without his flaws. I reserve the right to point them out. I've also leaned into the aspect/thought that some of Quinns issues might be in part due to Sark's management of the offense and Quinn.

The only thing that hampers our offense is a lack of a consistent running game.

Quinn was able to overcome that against ASU but if we can run it we are hard to beat.

Well there's the rub, I think part of our issues running is the play calling based on our QB's limitations that allows DCs to scheme and stop our run. Part of it the blocking scheme, part is the running plays called, part of it is what throws our HC trusts our QB to make, part of it is our OL performance, part of it is our RBs, part of it is what throws our QB is comfortable making, part of it is what throws our QB is "allowed" to make by the HC/OC, part of it is the QB's ability to read the defense, part of it is a lack of a truly mobile QB, part of it is our QB's comfort in calling audibles (or potential the HC's limitations placed on the QB's ability to audible), and part on the HC/OC's adjustment to the DCs game plan based on all these factors.

It's normal for people to want a simple answer to complex issues. To point to a single aspect and say this is why or this is why not.

When you do so, it never really allows for discussion of the complex nuance that is any complex topic and a football offense is a complex topic that can't be boiled down to simply Quinn sucks, our running game sucks our RBs suck or our OL sucks. None of those are correct in and of themselves. It's a combination of factors.

Yes it is a combination of factors but Sark is 25-4 over the last two seasons and has now reached the final four in consecutive years.

It is fine to criticize and nitpick him but you will be hard pressed to convince me he doesn’t know what he is doing.

There is not another coach in the country I would rather have.

Please point out where in that post, this thread or any thread I've said Sark doesn't know what he's doing, much less suggest I want to get rid of sark outside of game thread venting where I've never said we should fire Sark.

Moreover, I was talking about Quinn and his limitations. However, this particular dialog between us started with me actually giving a compliment to BOTH Quinn and Sark. Let's pause there a minute.

I was complimenting our QB and our HC.

Then you decided it was important to point out that's why Quinn was playing QB for Texas as well as noting he gives us our best chance to win.

After I complemented Quinn. I agreed but noted I reserved the right to point out issues in Quinn performance.

To which you responded that a lack of running performance is the only thing that hampers this offense.

That leads me to believe that your position is that any offensive issues we have are based purely on the run game and Quinn and the OC have zero culpability when teams scheme to stop Texas run game, force us to pass and succeed. We've struggled against every team that has a good defense and they scheme specifically to limit our run and force Quinn and thereby Sark to throw.

So, if Sark and Quinn can't overcome a defensive strategy to stop our run and force us to pass, the liability is purely on the offensive line and RBs. The HC/OC and QB are not culpable in any way? Is that accurate?

It's not the blocking scheme our HC/OC draws up? It's never the running plays our HC/OC draws up? It's never Quinn's fragile physicality? It's never Quinn’s lack of speed? It's never Quinn’s misread of a D? It's never a lack of adjustments by the HC to attack a D scheme set up to challenge us to throw? It's never Quinn's read of the DBs? It's never the passes Quinn throws? It's never Quinn's check downs passes? It's never Quinn not feeling pressure in the pocket?

Historically that isn't remotely the case for a Sark offense. It is inside zone his offense typically revolves around.

well you might want to tell Sark that

https://www.si.com/college/texas/football/everything-texas-longhorns-coach-steve-sarkisian-said-ahead-of-sec-championship-game-01jecacr3dvy

SARKISIAN: Well, I think the one thing for the run game, so much of what we do comes off of the outside zone scheme. As I touched on about a month ago, we were just off. Our landmarks weren't great, the O-line and the running back. Our timing was off. Our run timing was off of when blocks were being made, where the runner was making his cut. We were getting some holding penalties. If we could get that rectified, the other runs that come off of that would benefit from that. I think that's been the case.

you guys want to tell me what colt has done that is so far beyond what Quinn has?

Took Texas to National Championship. That edges out Ewers accomplishments so far.

That scenario, not 4th and 13, but 3rd and medium or 3rd and long at that part of the field, long FG range….in the past the blitz comes, protection doesn’t hold up and Quinn takes a sack that moves you out of FG range.  When I saw the defense creeping up I thought, we’re fucked.
That was amazing.  We’ve been on the other side of that.  (Fuck you Joe Burrows.)  To have converted that 4th down, it’s still hard to believe.

Yeah man, Sark was always IZ based until he couldn't run it and then we switched to OZ. We can't come off the ball and move people at the guard and center spot. No one gets to the second level and so OZ is what we hang our hat on now. Trust me though. If Sark had a couple maulers inside he would switch back to IZ in a second. There is so much more you can do off of IZ. More importantly, play fakes off of OZ leave your quarterback exposed on the backside as the O-line dances to the left or right. If the ball doesn't come out right now the QB is just standing there with little to no protection. Even when you fake a stretch play and boot out the back a smart DE/Nickel can put a lot of pressure on you. That's what happened in the Vandy game. They kept firing the nickel while we were in play fake mode and caught us once on the boot and he tipped the ball leading to an int.

This is not to come at you just noting that Sark used to be an IZ guy.

Sark has always been a big IZ guy. He loves it for the RPO game. (see here for example).  Also, we ran a ton more IZ with Brooks last year.

I think our move to OZ is due as much to our backs this year as our OL.

I've said for a while now that our run blocking next year will be far better than this year but our pass blocking will be slightly worse.

I've been a big Majors hater early on but he's arguably our second best OL and does well at center. The issue is our LG is complete fucking liability.

I'd bet if Texas ended up losing big to OSU due primarily to QB play you certainly would.
