To Gerry’s defense Willliams very well could’ve been a first rounder (probably high) if he stayed and started at least two years

Williams barely got drafted. He was nowhere fucking near being a high first round pick even if he started two more years in college.

To be fair, he is in the same district as Turntine who won 1st team.

Yep, and here’s another thing people probably don’t realize. They fill out those “first teams” as entire rosters, not just a starting lineup, there’s like 50 spots. 11 OL made district 3-6A “first team” and Ojo wasn’t one of them. He’s all projection.

Elite recruits want max $$ and to play immediately. Teams now have positional multi-year budgets to balance and Baker is likely making 7 figures at tackle w/ at least 2 more seasons to go and Goosby will likely be a 3 year starter.

Ojo never made sense. Why would you pay 7 figures for 3 years for what is likely a 1 year starter(goes pro after JR/RS-SO year, and hell he might not ever start if both Baker and Goosby stay through SR years)?

Instead use that money to fill other positional needs next year, and get Brown, the top OT in 27.

Turntine was a need because Campbell's a senior.

Wesley was a need because Simmons will be going pro after 26.

Bell was a need because QB's need 2 years to develop.

This class will ultimately be viewed as underwhelming, but that's only due to how stacked the team is QB/WR/OT/EDGE/DT/MLB/CB through 2027. The only potential needs are IOL, TE, WILL & maybe safety/nickel. Everywhere else is loaded with 5* underclassmen and paying a freshman OL 7 figures to sit for 2+ years is just a dumb allocation of resources

Goosby could easily be gone after this season, if he’s as good as he was in his spot duty last year.

baker is in year 2 so if he’s is good this year and next he could be gone as well.

I don’t think we are trying to replace those guys in this class, we are trying to get the guys that replace the guys that replace this year’s starters.

oh and turntine isn’t replacing Campbell next year.

He was being talked nationally and was in a lot of mocks in the 1st round.  He put out lots of good things and also bad things on tape which isn’t surprising for a first year starter.  He fell bc of his lack of experience and bc he couldn’t test due to his injuries.  He still went in the 5th round.  Had he come back, worked on his weaknesses and had another year of tape, he very likely would have been a top 2 round pick.

A little early for that bit of speculation, friendo.

How many Bama, Georgia, OSU top three classes in a row have there been over the years?

We can and should do the same.

And welcome to our gaggle of miscreants.

Think about the type of player you’re getting at Tech if he’s been money whipped extravagantly to go there of all places.

He’s someone who doesn’t care that much about championships. He’s someone who doesn’t care that much or believe that he can be developed into a much better player in college.

He’s someone who isn’t thinking about how to properly position himself best for the nfl. He’s taking the short cut of just getting as much money as possible right away and then just assuming the nfl is waiting with open arms.

These are low IQ players, jumping at whatever money they can get and probably don’t have the work ethic, focus, or intelligence to really succeed and exceed.

I see the whole scenario as a way for Texas to weed out pretenders. Now losing players to LSU, OSU, etc is a different matter. But Tech? Pfffft.

I don't know his thoughts on anything to know his IQ, other than he's a high school kid getting a lot of money thrown at him, but don't discount handlers--family and agents.

Edit: NM, was already solidly stated upthread.

They’re going to play him as a true freshman. That money doesn’t sit the bench. He’s not going to get any time to develop and he’s technically terrible with no hip flexibility. He’s probably ruined his career by making the choice he’s made, so hopefully he’s careful with that $3+M that he winds up with after taxes.

I watched his tape and was shocked at how tight his hips are and his lack in movement.  He’s a statue. A lot of these kids are just bigger and stronger than the kids they play in HS so it’s a big shock when they have to go against a grown ass man who has 3 years in the program for the first time. Iron sharpens iron but it also cuts paper.  Unless he gains strength, movement and flexibility, he won’t make it past Tech.  But at least he can join the Micah Hudson support group for 5 stars that chose Tech and sucked as freshman.

Oof. The reps against KJ Ford and Jake Kreul were brutal. I know it's only a handful of highlights of one day of drills - but I think maybe the top tackle overall shouldn't get reverse pancaked by a guy half his size in absolutely humiliating fashion like that

The real concern here shouldn't be about Ojo or even this class as of July. The concern is that the paradigm has shifted and Texas appears to no longer be playing the same game as other schools. Before House settlement, Texas was the one doing the money-whipping. Now it seems to have reversed.

Several people on here/9.95ers supposedly in the know have alluded to some schools not stopping at the settlement cap through various means. Maybe the current admin/staff will be different but pre-NIL Texas liked to play by the books. That means going back a similar disadvantage Texas faced against bag gamers.

All that being said - I always believed the House Settlement would even the playing field in a negative way for Texas. Even if everyone were strictly compliant, the financial advantage Texas previously had is now much smaller on a relative basis.

Many here know this better than I, but I don't think there is a HS recruit now that will start for Texas as a true freshman, certainly not Day 1. Not being able to offer starter time is an undeniable fact that will hinder Texas in signing top recruits at every position.

Bobby: "Ojo's gonna be ranked outside the top 100 in a week or two."

I'll say it here, Ojo doesn't sign with TTech on signing day. His rating will fall, he coasts his senior year and gets whipped on the field, and he just isn't worth $5 MM.  Whatever he signed is predicated on him signing with TTech, no signature, money.

He’s a tackle.  Gerry is adamant about it.  He has seen Turntine numerous times for years and is a much better evaluator than the guys running the recruiting services.  He’s said he has tackle wing span and may be the most athletic lineman in the last two OL classes.  He’s also ranked in the top 10 in his high school class academically and has tremendous work ethic.  He’s said multiple times that Turntine has been at the top of the Texas board for years.  Flood has been recruiting him for 3 or so years as a tackle.  He will probably be the most ready tackle prospect from a technique and feet standpoint since Banks.  He simply has to put on about 30 pounds.  That is probably the only thing holding him back.  Gerry said he is already squatting a ridiculous amount at his current weight.

Thank you. good post.

Banks came into a wide open OL room. He was a stud and played at a high level right out of the gate, but I'm not sure he would be a day 1 starter today. Maybe, but he was going to start the day he signed.

If not TTU prolly aggy. They prolly won't give him $5 MM but enough to have him end up there.

I just don't see the resources being available for the 26 class to be elite. Too much quality depth & money are tied up in 24-25, the needs were/are QB/IOL/EDGE/Safety and maybe RB. But paying a 5* freshman RB to sit doesn't make sense either, they're day 1 starters and at minimum Wisner/Gibson will be back for 26. I think it will be a mediocre class simply due to how good/stacked the 24-25 classes are. And honestly overpaying for a nfl-quality veteran OT in the portal is a much better option than paying a 5* freshman to sit and develop for 2 years

He got his ass whooped by others at the camp. Usually when you see a OL get dominated at these types of settings it’s from a bull rush. He not only got shit on by a bull rush but got shit on vs speed, got shit on vs technique/finess.

Your take is a class that ends outside of what…the top 3, top 5, is mediocre? What about the #8 class? Define “mediocre?”

I think a lot of people are hung up on the old concept of the Mega Class that Bama, UGA as OSU used to sign back before NIL.  Where the gap between #5 and #6 was bigger than the gap between #6 and # 12

Mediocre for Texas, probably ends up ~10-15. A lot of depth/high upside multi-year "projects" that don't command serious NIL money, 26 will kind of end up a gap year imo. 27 & 28  will be the foundation around Bell

We could have paid for all of these dudes and we didn’t. What we are doing is paying extreme attention to culture and development. Why pay Ojo 5m to sit for two years? Why pay Guervil 2m or whatever when we dont have to?

Keep the ones we have healthy and happy.
Develop them.
Pay out the wazzoo for a one year rental from the portal.

As I watch all of this play out - it is apparent Sark is managing this really really well.

You guys know there’s no salary caps right? There’s no budget? All this talk of “tying up money” in recruits is nonsense. We have almost unlimited money to spend and we should start acting like it. Do the Dodgers give a shit how much money they have tied up in Ohtani or Betts or Kershaw or anyone else? Do they let it stop them from signing more stars? No.

That's true, last year the consensus was we needed to land one of fasusi or Turntine to be an anchor left tackle. And that was before we had Nick Brooks and he apparently showed out as the next LT after Goosby.

They're still on track, just need to finish with a couple more developmental OL. The NFL draft is littered with 3 and low 4 star OL every year. They need to get the right guys that will sit a couple of years and develop.

There is a cap. It’s internal and unknown. The problem you don’t understand is how NIL for recruits impacts those already in the system. You can’t just keep upping the package for every recruit- that won’t end well for you.

Pick your battles
Get them in the system
Develop them
Get them drafted

One other thing-
Keeping our powder dry for talent acquisition on the back end of the season seems like a really smart play. What if some of the guys coming in aren’t what we thought they were? Let’s say we see issues with WR’s - now we need to reset the board and apply pressure to that pain point.

We saw what happened prior to last season when we lost 2 RB’s with season ending injuries. Luckily we were fairly deep there but combine that with maybe 1 or 2 that you see aren’t going to pan out and maybe we take 1 more there last class.
