Arch Manning: Doing his best JAG impression to fool scouts

To me it’s as simple as he is now QB1. He doesn’t have the luxury of being a backup anymore. This is his team. This is his season to prove he deserves to be worthy of expectations. He has to find a balance for dealing with his internal expectations coach and team expectations, and figure out how to play loose like he did last year.

This is what I don't get. He was nails last year in his 2 starts. Yeah those were weak opponents but so is UTEP.

Either he's hurt (doubtful), he has the mental yips (likely), or his mechanics got fucked up over the offseason (who knows).

Grasping at straws here, but did Arch attempt some kind of Tiger Woods-ish mechanics overhaul in the offseason? And he's struggling through it now? I don't know, nothing makes sense.

I swear every time Arch comes into the game, he is doing shit with his rotator cuffs. Is he just super stiff and he's constantly having to stretch them out. Could that be part of why he grimaces when he throws or side arms passes?

The calls for the backup to come in for Manning are funny.  sark will sacrifice this season, barring some Simms Colorado collapse.  It is all on Manning to get better or become Sam Ehlinger and see if we can ball control and D our way to some wins.   we cant score TD's even when the D gives us the ball in plus territory.

I will take "Ewers awful" for 500 Alex. 3-0 and headed back to the playoffs.

Does someone else post for you in Cloak Room? I always like your posts there.

Quinn didn’t suck. Fans who harassed Chris Simms, insult our players who read Surly Horns and make unsubstantiated rumors about our current QB (not saying you do that but others are already doing it) are the ones who suck.

I don't buy it either, but if it's not an injury then it's 100% a mental thing, that could, in theory, solve itself. Different than a QB who has never shown anything to be positive about. Of course, this could be a thing he can't shake in which case, we're proper fucked.

The problem is he’s getting worse with more reps.

Yeah, the Quinn Ewers sucked at Texas argument is odd.

That performance yesterday was basically another Simms against Colorado. Except at home against UTEP and they dropped 2-3 more INTs.

A silver lining here is that I don't think our QB needs to be a savior for Texas to be successful this year. We just need one that can be a threat to and actually complete passes. It doesnt need to be record setting numbers. Just decently good. That would have beat Ohio State.

I think Caldwell can be good enough if we have to go that route. Hopefully Arch figures out this week how to be decently good and we can put this madness behind us.

This may be right.

It's also part of why I'm in favor of him splitting series with another QB.  He seems to loosen up and have more success once we've got a lead.  So, if someone else can lead a TD drive (and if coach can help by taking some FG's), that could help him ease in.  He might also feel challenged, in a good way.

And if splitting time ruins his confidence or attitude, then he was never going to be the guy here anyway, as I said in the other thread.

All I know is this: we're not making the playoff if we keep banging our head against this wall.  It's time to try something different.

And, for the record, I still think Arch is going to do big things here.  But if he isn't ready yet, whether he's injured or it's in his head, and we blow up this season with stubbornness, that is coaching malpractice.  I like Sark, too, but he has to get this one right.

Agreed, at least for now.  His backups suck or are extremely inexperienced.  It's up to Sark and Arch to try and get this turned around and right.  Beyond his poor play -- can't see the field right now, late on everything, bad mechanics which creates inaccuracy, poor decision making, Sark needs to be way better.  And so does the OL.  The OL pretty much is mediocre or on the shitty side.  Our normal running game outside of Arch was 46 for 176 or 3.8 YPC.... against UTEP.  That fucking awful.  So, some of this starts upfront.  A lot is the game plan, as Sark wants to make this a running/PA team which is weird because the stats say Arch does better with a straight drop back.  And then the rest is Arch needs to be a lot better and get back his confidence.  If you go with a backup, it's because he's hurt or you lose 2 of the next 4 or 5 games and need to look to next year and get Lacey or Owens, probably Lacey some snaps....

The worst that can be said of Quinn Ewers is that he turned out to be about an 8, and we were hoping for a 9.5.  That's it.  Good kid, good leader, won a lot of games.

And I think the people who bag on Quinn are the same ones who bagged on Simms.  If you're expecting everyone to be VY or Colt, you just don't understand how special VY and Colt were.

Sam has multiple 400 yard passing games at Texas. This narrative he was some inept passing battering ram is weird.

When you’re a 1.000 graded recruit, those are the expectations. He underperformed period. It’s fine, but to pretend otherwise is disingenuous.

Arch has the yips.

He needs to see a sports psychologist asap. Maybe even reach out to Simone Biles for advice and a referral.

The good news is this can be addressed but he and/or Sark needs to do so asap.

Simone pulled herself from competition to get back on track.  Caeleb Dressel had to do the same thing.  Both pulled themselves mid game so to speak. If it’s mental issue it’s not going to heal overnight and playing him could make it worse.

Arch has never competitive at the level those two did but I do think the pressure on him is enormous.

UTEP wasn't really selling out to stop the run.  They started to compress the field as the game went on but this wasn't schematically UTEP trying to take away the run.  This was a mediocre line getting limited by a good but under talented DL or front 7.  UTEP's strength was their front 7 and Sark tried to run right at them and enforce Texas' identity as a physically dominant running team.  We failed until we got Arch into the running game and found James Simon and even then, it was just solid.  This OL is not really very good right now.  Not saying they're a shitshow but again, vs a team like UTEP, expectations should be YPC close or around 5.  Need better efficiency per play.  We didn't get it and with Sark's odd game plan, Arch was set up with a bunch of 3rd and 4th and long or mid in the first half, which is just fucking weird.  First 4 drives, every sequence of new downs began with a run except for 1..... the drive we scored a TD.  By the time we tried to force the ball downfield (with little to no creativity), Arch had already gotten in his head with that horrendous INT.

I’ll only add the five stars of this quarterback class are a complete train wreck.

I am convinced that COVID really fucked up the development and scouting of a lot of the HS school kids and the QBs got the worst of it. Looking back at the top 10 rankings of the QB’s from the 21-23 classes and it’s grim. There is two elite caliber QBs both in the 2021 class Caleb Williams and J.J McCarthy. Other than that it’s bunch of transfers and backs and serviceable starters. I know ranking players out of highschool is a crap shoot by going 2-28 is pretty terrible.

The last couple years we seem to struggle with undersized front 7 that are quick enough to beat us to our spots. Then we play Clemson and aggy and run all over them. I think the line doesn't know what to do with a squatty player that is hard to get leverage on. Interested to see how we look in SEC play.

Why, that’s fucking negligence to Mack Brown levels. This isn’t Kansas St, fuck the money. Throwing away this season and potentially losing to both aggy and Oklahoma gives away a huge gap we’ve gained over both of them and should put Sark on a warm seat in 2026. Honestly, this is retarded fucking logic. There is no sunken cost fallacy at Texas. We can absorb nearly any money loss.

The mannings gotta see it, right? Right?
Seeing it on tv I thought nahh may be over reaction.
But watchin it in person yesterday at DKR was just god awful. I heard some boos after a dud series late in the 4th. Was sitting in Section 14. Remonded me of Garrett Gilbert years. He missed or didnt see ton of open receivers as plays developed. I thought getting him out of the pocket may help but he missed there too. On that wingo fourth down shit throw play it looked like Wingo immediately ran off with a .. we all know this guy sux body language. To see that play in person and wingo not far way, the throw was just attrocious. Leaving I saw kids on LBJ Library grass hit that crossing route easy.
Whatever it is, is just sad. Looks like the Knoblach (sp? wgaf) yips.
Sark is in a shitstorm. And after the Alamo Bowl yellin at the security guy and the restroom vid comment this week, I hope hes not Herman 2.0. Sarks great anwering easy questions. But when it comes to tougher ones he hss answered he looks annoyed and seems to answer like a cunty karen. Bohls gonna make his life hell now that the shoes on the other foot.

I made the critical error yesterday of saying something similar about Sark. I shouldn’t have posted it. I don’t think unless we have real evidence of something affecting someone’s ability to do their job or to perform their role as a player should be talked about. My apologies for insinuating the same of Sark. Those things are hurtful. I think Arch is just trying to be a young man like everyone else, like his brother, and he has the weight of the world on his shoulders. I just wish those insiders who clearly spoke to a “bad week of practice that spilled onto the football field” for the game yesterday would provide more details.

what I posted was wrong in the game thread and it was reposted a bunch even tho I did delete my post. I put out something that is just a rumor without proof and I deserved my licks for that. I can do better. it’s also not as if other players didn’t or don’t also party if that is indeed the case. I’ve never heard anything other about Arch other than he takes all of this very seriously. If that turns out not to be the case so be it.

but that was my big knock on Ewers that when he came in he wasn’t “into the playbook” and most everyone absolutely flaming Arch now didn’t seem to have a problem with Ewers possibly not taking it all seriously when he first came here. In fact the exact opposite was said like “you can’t blame the guy” for not being into the playbook bc he’s a big stud on campus. Can’t have it both ways I guess. The truth is if his play was better no one would give a shit if Arch partied or not. I think he’s just trying to grow into those very very big shoes that have been telegraphed on him for his whole life. Jmo.

With all of the training and camps, there is no reason his feet are so bad. Look at that throw to the TE in the Twitter thread above. He should be turning and firing that over there. Instead, it’s a side arm pass with bad feet and no zip.

He moves well in the pocket, but never resets his feet when he moves, even when he has plenty of time. It’s just slop feet and trying to only use his arm.

There is no way he was taught that over the years of focused coaching he has had. It has to be mental. I hope it’s a hiccup and not just what he is.

Dante Moore is on the right track. He had to play immediately which is always tough, and did so on a medicore UCLA team, but he seems to be off and running at Oregon. Need to see him play higher level competiton of course.

The rest of them, I mean, woof.

Whatever is happening is real, mental goblins are hard to shake, but at some point you need to do the needful to get the help needed for someone and save the season. If we don't have a quarterback than can throw and things stay ugly, recruiting suffers. Damn near everyone in the SEC looked better than us in being able to score yesterday.

My son, who is a sophomore at UT, mentioned to me after the Ohio State game that maybe Arch needs to spend less time at the Fiji house or they need to stop letting him in. He clarified today that Arch has a "social bid" to Fiji, but he doesn't know how frequently he is partying there.

Guys this isn't the early 2000s or 90s. The nutrition and S&C teams have all kinds of sensor data and take all kinds of measurements and levels daily.

If Arch was hung over and fucked up all the time it would be showing up all over the place.

I can believe that he parties, but come on knock it off with that being why he can't hit the broad side of a barn and go 10 incompletions in a row against UTEP. Seriously shut it down on this angle.

So, I had this conversation with @Ldogg53yesterday (and may have posted it here). The two HS games I saw of Arch did not scream #1 overall recruit. I'm sure he has showed something somewhere (camps & other games). I expect him to be a better pro than college QB if the family tradition holds.
