Fyi... Glad coaches kept Crawford off the field at safety in the 4th quarter.

Jalen Catalon, S

Unfortunately, Catalon was banged up again in the Iowa State game after he missed the four previous games due to a lower-body injury. Catalon only played six snaps against Iowa State before he reportedly (per CJ Vogel of TFB Texas) re-aggravated a shoulder injury he’s dealt with since preseason camp.

From what we tallied up during the Iowa State game last weekend, Catalon didn’t play any snaps in the second half.

Catalon has dealt with recurring injury issues throughout his career, dating back to his time with the Arkansas Razorbacks. He’s now missed roughly half of the Big 12 slate for the Longhorns this season due to the shoulder injury and a leg injury he suffered in the Red River Rivalry game on Oct. 7 against the Oklahoma Sooners in Dallas.

Redshirt sophomore safety Michael Taaffe has started every game in the secondary since Catalon suffered a leg injury against Oklahoma in Red River. Senior safeties Jerrin Thompson and Kitan Crawford have started the rest of the games at safety for the Longhorns in Catalon’s absence.

It’s noteworthy that Crawford also had limited snaps at safety late in the second half against Iowa State. While that might not be due to an injury issue (we don’t officially know why Crawford was on the sideline for the fourth quarter), Crawford didn’t take any defensive snaps at safety in the fourth quarter.

We’ll continue to monitor Catalon’s injury status heading into the regular season finale against Texas Tech. During his Monday press conference, Sark didn’t mention anything about his injury status.

Derek Williams Jr., S

Another safety who suffered an injury in the win over Iowa State in Week 12 was true freshman Derek Williams Jr. Williams suffered an upper-body injury (likely a shoulder stinger) on a hit in the second quarter on the ball carrier in pass coverage.

After Williams suffered the upper-body injury in the second quarter against Iowa State, he was taken to the sideline for further evaluation. But it wasn’t long before Williams had returned to live-game action on defense for Texas. Williams returned to play over a dozen defensive snaps in the second half at safety.

By the start of the fourth quarter, Texas was utilizing a three-man rotation at safety with Thompson, Taaffe, and Williams. This was after Catalon left the game due to an upper-body injury.

There is good news that Williams reportedly avoided a separated shoulder, which makes sense given that he was able to return to live-game action in the game last weekend. It sounds like Williams should be good to go for the Longhorns heading into the regular season finale on Nov. 24 against Texas Tech.

Given that Texas could be short Catalon in the regular season finale, and that something was wrong with Crawford late in the game against Iowa State, Williams being healthy for the Texas Tech game will be crucial.

Hope Worthy is good to go Friday.  🤘

Xavier Worthy, WR

The biggest late-game injury the Longhorns suffered in the win over Iowa State was dealt to junior wide receiver Xavier Worthy. Texas lost Worthy in the second half after he had a productive first half with some explosive plays on offense and special teams.

Worthy suffered the injury in the third quarter and was taken to the locker room for further evaluation. Early in the fourth quarter, Worthy was seen on the sideline in street clothes and missed the rest of the game along with Campbell.

It was reported during the broadcast on Saturday night that Worthy suffered a lower-leg injury. He was having trouble putting pressure on his left leg on the sideline in that game.

The good news regarding Worthy’s status is that Sark said he essentially expects Worthy to be good to go for the Texas Tech game on Black Friday. But it’s worth noting that Worthy could be limited in practice this week due to the injury he suffered in the Iowa State game last weekend.

Before Worthy suffered the injury in the second half against Iowa State, he looked to be on track for his second consecutive 100-receiving yard game. He reeled in four catches for 77 receiving yards in nearly three quarters of action in Week 12. Worthy also had one rush for 16 yards that resulted in a fumble within Iowa State’s 20-yard line.

Unfortunately, Worthy’s long punt return for a touchdown in the first half was called back on a block in the back foul.

After Worthy suffered the injury, the Longhorns gave true freshman wide receiver Johntay Cook II the reps at the field spot. But Cook was taken out of the game after just a handful of snaps at receiver after a snafu where he wasn’t lined up on the line of scrimmage, forcing Sark to take an abrupt timeout.

Sark utilized more two tight end sets against Iowa State in the fourth quarter due to a combination of the Cook mistake and Worthy’s injury.

JT has been banged up so much this year, wonder if he comes back for 2024 season ???

Ja’Tavion Sanders, TE

In the first half against Iowa State, junior tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders came up hobbled with an ankle injury after being tackled by an Iowa State defender on a passing play. Sanders got his ankle rolled up on during that tackle by the Iowa State defender in the first half.

Sanders limped back to the sideline for further treatment on the ankle after that play against Iowa State. But he later returned to the game and played nearly three dozen offensive snaps in the second half.

Fellow junior tight end Gunnar Helm received more targets in the passing game, with Sanders dealing with the lingering ankle injury in the second half. Helm was targeted twice in the passing game in the second half against Iowa State, resulting in two catches for 40 receiving yards and one touchdown.

One of Helm’s two catches resulted in the game-winning touchdown on a 31-yard hookup between him and Ewers early in the fourth quarter, which put the Longhorns up 23-9 at the time.

Sanders is expected to be good to go for the Longhorns in the Texas Tech game on Black Friday, as this ankle issue reportedly isn’t as serious as the one he suffered on Oct. 7 in Red River against Oklahoma.

DJ Campbell

One of the key starters on offense for the Longhorns, who suffered an injury in the win over Iowa State last weekend, was sophomore interior offensive lineman DJ Campbell. He suffered an apparent lower-body injury late in the first half against Iowa State that knocked him out for the rest of the game.

Hutson took the rest of the reps at right guard for Texas against Iowa State on Nov. 18. Sark commended Hutson, among the other Texas players who stepped up in the wake of injury issues surfacing last weekend.

“Ja’Tavion goes out, DJ Campbell goes out, Xavier goes out in the fourth quarter, and other guys were able to step up.”

It’s valuable for offensive line coach/offensive coordinator Kyle Flood and the Longhorns to have Hutson as the sixth guy along the offensive line to provide depth when injury issues surface, as they did against Iowa State. Hutson started over a dozen games for the Longhorns last season.

Hutson was stellar in run blocking and pass pro, given the situation he came into in the trenches in a raucous road environment. He didn’t allow a single quarterback pressure and was the second-highest-graded pass blocker for Texas in Week 12.

Regarding Campbell’s status heading into the Texas Tech game in Week 13, Sark said he “feels pretty good” in his Monday press conference and “doesn’t foresee” Campbell missing the finale on Black Friday.

No hyperbole: I dont remember a single Texas team more banged up than this one, this year
What's weird is that we came out of summer practice unscathed.

Feels like we usually have one major injury during August. I think we went into that Rice game with a full roster.

It’s a long season. This season has required the entire starting units to be on the field until end of 4th. The lack of blow outs and even with our depth injuries happen and the aggregate is showing up in the final game with what could be 3 more games to go.  Would be nice to go up by 40 and play the reserves longer instead of rotating starters in trying to save the season

Thanks captain obvious. Seems like we have it worse than most year in and year out. I think it is a question worth asking.

Heading into our final regular season game, we have two players listed on the injury report.

the strength and conditioning coach’s job is safe.

Steve Sarkisian Provides Updates on Longhorns Injured vs. Texas Tech

Story by Matt Galatzan  • 8h

AUSTIN, Texas -- The Texas Longhorns blew out the Texas Tech Red Raiders 57-7 on Friday night, cementing their spot in the Big 12 Championship Game.

However, that win did not come without cost, with multiple Horns being injured throughout the night.

The first Longhorn to go down was cornerback Ryan Watts, who was injured on the first play of the game when attempting to make a tackle on Texas Tech running back Tahj Brooks. Watts did not return to the game.

Sarkisian described Watts' injury as a back issue but did not provide a further update.

"We'll know more moving forward," Sarkisian said. "I just saw him in the locker room. He's in good spirits, so that's a positive."

Freshman Malik Muhammad replaced Watts, coming away with an interception.

The second notable injury came to starting running back CJ Baxter, who was already filling in for starter Jonathon Brooks and left early in the third quarter with an upper-body injury.

Baxter's injury was described by Sarkisian as a 'hip pointer', and noted that the team decided to hold out the freshman from the rest of the game as a precaution.

"I looked at the scoreboard and he could've gone back in," Sarkisian said. "(It was) more of a coach's decision."

The injury for Baxter gave way to Jaydon Blue to receive most of the carries, who had a 69-yard touchdown in the first half to help provide some early separation. Blue finished with 121 yards for the game, while the team as a whole ended with over 300 yards on the ground.

The final injury Sarkisian updated was that of backup quarterback Maalik Murphy, who he said was injured on the sideline after a collision during a kick return. Per Sarkisian, Murphy injured his 'non-throwing shoulder'

The injury to Murphy paved the way for Sarkisian to give Longhorns freshman Arch Manning to make his debut, with Manning leading a touchdown drive in the fourth quarter.

He was “taken” to the locker room for his “injury.” It seems like made up stuff to protect Maalik. But I think Maalik wasn’t too happy Arch was going in.

I don’t know. Sark says it’s happened during Keilans return

Who is playing notably hurt ? We have sanders and banks for sure and we do we have catalon back? What’s the full list?

I saw Catalon playing in the fourth quarter. I rewound it to confirm because I seems so weird that he didn’t get time early if he was healthy enough to go, but he’d get garbage time reps.

This is some next level fan fiction.

I’m pretty sure that was Allen Jr.

It was definitely Catalon. Probably just wanting to get him some live reps ahead of next week.

I still have no idea what his injury was. Hyperextended knee?

Catalon -  Last game vs cyclones reaggravated shoulder injury.  Prior to that, hyperextended knee.

Dude did not walk with seniors.  Possibly gonna try to play another year since he has COVID exemption???

Weird. No statement on Worthy.

The play he got rolled up on looked scary as hell but he’s lucky his foot didn’t get stuck in the turf. He came back after then got reinjured later and had to get carried to the locker room at half. Looked a little over dramatic given how fine he looked the rest of the game but painkillers are a hell of a drug.

Tech player that got taken off in a cart was released from hospital and flew back with the team thankfully. I can’t remember a game with more injuries everywhere than last night.
