Say, I'd bet the environmental impact on those protected wetlands is pretty fucking bad from getting covered with pulverized rocket part bits. Powderized silica from the heat tiles is a wonderful way to spread cancer over a region

gotta say, NASASpaceflight on youtube got a GREAT shot with their telephoto camera in starbase. The crazy thing - it detonated like this WHILE FUELING! It wasn't even firing any engines!

The video has some really pretty explosion porn though. Slo-motion and everything

Reminds me of the time as an 11 year old when I tried to make a warhead out of the nose cone of an Estes model rocket with potassium nitrate and black powder.

What if we think of SpaceX as a fireworks company?

Kind of a short presentation.

we’re gonna have to upgrade tariffs on all the Chinese fireworks even more to get this American manufacturer a level playing field.

It was an anomaly.

With Starship blowing up yesterday, and Robotaxi coming Sunday, it's got to be a little bit stressful for Leon.  Wonder if there's anything he can turn to, to help with that.

Sounds awesome!

Not really.  There was a construction attempt, but my older brother (lets call him "Chet") kept calling it the "Polish Nuke" then told on me before I could launch and I got a parental beat down.  Chet probably saved a few of my digits, tho.

For those of you not in the Austin area, Waymo is all over west campus and up and down Lamar.  I used to see 1-2 per day but it's now up to 7-10 per day.  A few days ago, I was stopped at a light on 29th st behind two Waymos, and a Waymo passed us going the other direction.  Unlike human drivers in Austin, the Waymo goes when the light turns green because the robot is not doing the Wordle while waiting at the red light.

The hell? Who does Wordle at a red light? If you're not doing it while driving, you're doing it wrong. Just like Snake in the old days.

Eh... O'Dowd got to to play his gotcha card, but like so many "gotchas" it's a surface-level critique that ignores nuance and important facts.  It ignores the "why" question.

Musk's 2019 statement alludes to the fact that Waymo's solution will not work outside of a geo-fenced area.  Their system will only work in meticulously mapped areas.

Re: the current statement - Tesla's robotaxi will use geo-fencing for two purposes:

  1. Keep vehicles inside of approved test area.
  2. Avoid intersections and interchanges that are more likely to cause issues with the system.

The important question and distinction is why each of these systems use geo-fencing.  Waymo uses it because their system literally cannot work outside of the geo-fenced areas.  Tesla is using it to limit the operation of the vehicles to an approved test region and to maximize the system's opportunity for success within the test region.

Oh please. Tesla is doing this because FSD the way they are making it cannot work period. They are picking "safe" areas because they are the ones they are training ultra highly on. This is simply moving the goalposts AGAIN.

Elon's drug habit?

But seriously - given how he throws money around, them burning through that kind of cash is not that crazy. I mean that crazy big data center powered by portable generators. The fact that he probably is paying the hell out of his team, even if they are substandard (see Meta offering $100 Million to Open AI employees)
https://ca.finance.yahoo.com/news/sam-altman-says-meta-offered-013520184.html

Them lighting cash on fire wouldn't shock me in the least.

If Elon hadn't seemingly trashed his relationship with Trump, I'm not sure xAI would be a bad financial bet.  An unregulated, uncensored AI with manipulated training data and market dominance would be a huge tool for authoritarianism and really help cement whatever narrative you wanted to prevail into the foreseeable future.  The big beautiful bill already is providing the unregulated part.  Elon is already happily providing the (somewhat) uncensored w/manipulated data part.  If he can stay/return to Trump's good graces and have xAI be used throughout the federal government and otherwise be given competitive advantages against other options, he could achieve a market dominance.  We are still in the VHS/Betamax phase with AI.  A thumb on the market's table could certainly increase an AI platform's odds of being a winner.

That assumes that AI ends up being a major profit vehicle. It could just be too foundational a product that the benefits are reaped by society and while some businesses make some money, the bulk go by the wayside.

Think Airlines - Where are Continental, Pan Am, NWA, Eastern, etc

Think Computers - Where are Gateway, Compaq (ok, HP, but still), etc?

There are many others.

Good listen presenting this thesis - https://www.profgalloway.com/a-new-ai-world/

Is it right? Maybe, maybe not, but when all of the AI companies can do just about the same things, there might not be a winner but the people.
