Junior Miller of The Ticket did a story this morning talking about how the A’s purposely tanked so that they could move the franchise to Las Vegas. I’ll spare you the details of it, but basically their playbook sounds suspiciously like what the Mavs ownership is doing.
While I originally questioned this conspiracy theory, they pointed out that the Adelsons have withdrawn their casino support for Dallas and New Jersey, and have ramped up spending in Vegas. This theory has some legs.

I heard that too. The A’s have been trying to leave Oakland for damn near 20 years. There is no parallel to the Mavericks. I say that but there’s no telling what that cunt Miriam Adelson is thinking. I can’t believe the league would let the Mavs leave Dallas.

I'll defer to @Skipper on this but I will say that anyone that's clinging to the "top 5 market" shit is fucking naive. Especially throwing out the fact that Vegas is the 40th market. Bitch please. Right after the fucking NFL expands there. It's not like they know what the fuck they're doing though lol.

Junior Miller is about the last person I would think has absolutely any fucking idea what he's talking about.  Is there a world where things get bad enough that the NBA lets Adelson move the team?  Maybe.  And I suspect it would be paired with a new franchise at or near the same time.  The NBA is not going to just give up the Dallas market.  I'm extremely confident this wasn't some 4D chess tank job to move the team at the time of the trade.  I've seen chatter about Junior's rant but won't listen to it, because outside of cycling nonsense, he doesn't really know what the fuck he is talking about these days.    Rarely listen to the musers at all anymore.   It's not in the same universe of the A's as that has been a bottom of the barrel franchise for decades.

If the Adelson's make a play to move the team, it will be because they inadvertently irreparably destroyed the fandom and their revenue stream, and can't get a deal done for a new arena.  Even then, I think more likely they would just sell the team as it would immediately become more valuable the minute ownership changed hands.

Oh I agree. I don't even know what Junior said, nor do I give a shit (about anything he says). I just think to say there's no way they'd move the team is short-sighted. Also agree the NBA isn't giving up DFW.

They can fucking move for all I care.  Between that and rooting for a team owned by that family for the next 20 years, give me the former, 100%. Just leave the name.

Jesus Christ we're Cleveland.

Yeah, it's just annoying (and fitting) that Junior decided to put on his tin foil hat to fill air time months after the fact and months after voluminous reporting explaining in detail exactly how this played out.  The time to do this was in the days after the trade when everyone was in shock and all theories were plausible.   It's pretty clear considering the consistent insider sourcing as to what led to this for anyone that put in the effort to read/listen (which clearly disqualifies the musers as they have been mailing it in for years now).

At this point the conspiracy theory and the incompetence theory converge into a single outcome.

So why would a new buyer pay the premium when a change of ownership is the thing that creates the additional equity?
If the Adelsons can’t get a stadium deal done in Dallas or Irving with a casino/resort attached or heavy taxpayer subsidies the franchise would be worth more to the Adelsons in a new arena in Las Vegas.

The number of times the league has stopped a team from moving when they can’t get a new arena built is zero.

I'm just saying the theory that they traded Luka with the goal of moving to Vegas is ridiculous.   I'm not discounting that the net effect of that incompetence could land in the same place.  I don't think it would be easy though unless it combined with expansion.   When has the NBA ever let a team leave a market like Dallas?  Seattle probably closest I recall and not remotely the same.  Metroplex is just way too big/valuable to not have an NBA team.

The Mavs seeking a basketball only arena in fucking Irving would make me significantly less invested as a fan regardless of who owns the team it that were to happen.  So tired of this decision making. I'll never understand why owners in this city have a fixation with making it a pain in the ass for fans to attend games.

I agree. They would probably force them to sell before they allowed them to leave for Vegas.

The NBA is a global brand. DFW aint shit. The Mavs aint shit. The Rockets, Thunder and Spurs would dance on their grave. Then NBA just creates a new expansion team later. All transactional and disposable.

Because voters in Arlington keep voting to give billionaire owners handouts.

Sure buddy.  Markets don't matter.  No correlation at all between size of the market and franchise value since a 'global brand'.   The bottom 10 on this list all just a complete coincidence.

CNBC's Official NBA Team Valuations 2025: Here's how the 30 franchises stack up

You are insane if you don't think market size correlates to how the NBA collectively views franchises.

Yeah, "I'll never understand why" was not the correct phrasing. I completely understand why.  And it pisses me off.

I've been saying that since the beginning. Next thing will be wanting a new stadium that cost extravagant dollars.

Because they don't wanna add 2 more teams and dilute the payout from TV.

The next TV contract for the NBA is gonna be a fucking trainwreck disaster. The ratings are ass.

Use your words. The Adelsons couldnt alienate the fanbase anymore if they tied Dirk to a bed at halfcourt and hit him in the gut with a pillow case full of oranges. Nothing makes sense and the NBA will not prevent an owner from moving the Mavs out of DFW.

Is this the thread where people that don't know anything about the NBA confidently comment about the NBA?

The current playoffs are doing very good numbers and are delivering an excellent product.

They just signed a new media rights deal less than 12 months ago.  It went well for them.

The NBA will do fine with temporarily losing a team in DFW. What you have is an owner with one foot out the door. Each owner needs to be a strong advocate for their team. I don’t see that being the case here.

Do you take the opposite position that, come hell or high water, the Adlesons will keep the team in DFW? Or, that the NBA will make the unprecedented move of forcing a team to stay in a market? Use your words.

Can't wait to see the upcoming arena demands at the foot of the taxpayer that will not want to pay it because they traded Luka. Then they'll say that you didn't want us here so we want to relocate to Vegas where the owners stand to make more money.

Yeah. About that…Last in the league is good right?

Since Allegient stadium opened the Raiders have been top 5 in revenue generated by ticket sales. That is more important to this ownership group than butts in the seats, having the Mavs move to Vegas with a brand new stadium will generate more money than being in Dallas.

Will be interesting to see the data once the A's stadium is open.

For sure. Thats all true. But more butts in seats also means more revenue. They have a 65,000 seat stadium and average 61,000 attendance. That extra 4k fans would mean 5-8% more money.

Bottom line.

They didn’t do the trade to move to Vegas. They did the trade because Nico and Luka had a bad relationship and Nico and AD had a good one. Nico thinks he is the smartest guy in the room and convinced his newbie boss that this was true.

There are some legendary franchises within the bottom ten in home attendance

It's pretty damn interesting that they are bottom 5 in stadium capacity but top 5 in revenue for tickets. Premium and luxury seating probably pushes their value more with concessions, caterings, and amenities than nose bleed fans, yeah?

I watched both games last night.  I love college basketball, but what I watched last night was a shit product.  For all of the talk about inadequacies of the WNBA game, which I do not watch; that crap in the NBA is basically unwatchable 3 bombs and just...I don't know what the hell to call it.  I have zero inclination/ desire to watch more.  I was just with Nugget fans/ family who wanted to do so.  There's also no fucking way I'm watching regular season games either, and I loved basketball growing up/ early adulthood.  The game play was trash and not compelling at all.

Three point contest - only hitting 25%? Shoot 20 more!

FT contest - baiting and flopping; refs have entirely too much control over the game

It's not the prettiest brand of ball that the NBA has going, but the big 20-point comebacks are fun to watch.

It’s the euro style that took over a long time ago. 5 out offenses with a ton of threes was more appealing(supposedly) to the fans than the old 90’s game of dump into the post(Barkley and shaq) and let them slowly back it down trying to get an illegal defense call or taking a shot with 3 seconds in the shot clock.

Now it’s all the way down into high school offenses. Pace, Space, and shoot. It can get ugly but so can the slow it down 15 passes to shoot offense I grew up in. At the end of the day I’d say a balance is what is best and a team that’s building their system around their roster so you can see what a good system looks like when it has the right personnel.

I think we can safely assume that former mayor Tom Leppert speaks for the establishment and business community of Dallas and North Texas, whose support is required for a new stadium or anything else.

The last line is the kill shot.

 off the top rope!

Quote

But like so many Mavs fans, I’m still deeply frustrated personally by the trade of Luka Doncic. And as a former mayor and a business leader in our city, I know it is going to keep hurting because it came at an enormous long-term cost to Dallas.

For me, having led this city, I think this comes down to the importance of engaged and committed local ownership in our sports franchises. What I’ve seen since Patrick Dumont and the Adelson family took over the Mavs suggests a lack of interest in the basketball operations and this community. From where I sit, the priority is clear: use this asset to further the family’s casino business,

Dumont approved a trade that it’s hard to believe any local owner would have accepted; it gutted the team’s identity and shattered a deep bond with its fans. It was apathy or a lack of understanding about Luka and the Dallas fan base that gave Harrison the authority to carry out his trade plan — regardless of the damage done.

Absenteeism has cost Dallas dearly. Hopefully, our public officials will remember this when the prospect of gambling is next raised.

What was it that stood out to you about the style of play in the 80s that’s missing today?

80's & 90's

1. Real defense

2. Pick & roll game also the Center/ pivot based schemes on offense.  IDGAF of your big man likes launching 3's

3. 3Pt shot not the focal point of the offense  It COULD be a feature, but it was rare

4. no load management

5. Don't like today's defensive rules and certainly don't believe they improved the game.

I'd also posit the bigtime stars during those days made you root harder for/ against individual teams. Now, I really DGAF. To be fair, my views on this front also apply to the NFL and to a  certain degree- NHL & MLB. I support the players getting paid, but it does change the dynamics of fandom as well. I miss George Springer being an Astro, I can't root for the Blue Jays though either.

Missed shots might bolster your case, if you're in to that kind of thing. We had 45missed 3's by one team in a playoff game the other night.  Maybe that's a draw.  It is not to me.

Additionally, my opinions are just that. Doesn't make em right or wrong.

No - because they're actually playing much better defense - they're just up against better offense.

Bill Lambier would get played off the floor in today's game. So would a bunch of the dudes that the Bulls ran out there around MJ and Pippen.

Watch any of the games the Warriors have played this playoffs against either HOU or MIN. The collective team D is off the charts.

I'm not saying the product is better when it comes to entertainment but this playoffs especially so far has been extremely physical and very low-scoring for this current era. I've watched some atrocious stretches of basketball this playoffs but we've also seen a bunch of amazing games.

I will 2nd that I'm not a fan of the games where there are 100 combined 3PAs. It can be an ass-whipping to watch. But that isn't every game. Wolves/Ws tonight one team was 13/34 from 3 one team was 10/23.

I have a theory that it’s because a lot of the players who were “friends” and etc all retired or not in playoffs at the moment.
