2018 Houston Astros Season Thread

When the Abreu rumor was first mentioned, wasn’t there speculation they would see if he could handle LF?  This was before the Tucker call up and I think it was just wild speculation to begin with.

But yeah, agree with you that Abreu doesn’t fill a pressing need. Then again, we don’t have real pressing needs at the moment. Sure some more reliability out of the BP would lower my blood pressure but they have been pretty good lately... not outstanding but usually good enough.

A closer throwing strikes, that's allowed?!?

Giles has a walk rate lower than Rondon, it’s miniscule - .88BB/9. If anything, part of his issues this year stem from throwing too many strikes (he’s not getting whiffs on his slider like in years past).

Strange criticism.

It's a jab at Giles, but I think we all feel more comfortable with Rondong closing.

I get that, and I’m not even disagreeing considering the way both are pitching at the moment, even though the actual season long numbers are pretty funny here compared to perception (Rondon has fewer shutdowns, more meltdowns, and a lower clutch than Giles-but he wasn’t already a whipping boy, so...).

But the jabs are better if they’re rooted even a little bit in reality.

the only issues i really see (or potentially aided by trade deadline acquisitions) - a lefty hitter off the bench and a reliever who gets lefties out.

if correa is healthy and tucker is playing most everyday, then all of a sudden you get another lefty in the lineup, and likely have marwin/kemp coming off the bench, so that solves that problem.

and our bullpen has been pretty awesome, especially lately, so not sure what the ideal piece even looks like.  remember, with the schedules in the playoffs, we add at least one starter to the pen.  is that mccullers?  he's top 15 in the al in era, but probably has the best makeup for it.  does dk become a lefty specialist and we go with a 3 man rotation?

either way, as of now (assuming a 4 man rotation), the top guys in the bullpen for postseason are : mccullers (?), harris, devo, peacock, mchugh, rondon.  there are 6 i'm pretty happy with.  sipp is having a great year.  giles isn't as bad as many of you guys think he is.  joe smith apparently can get certain guys out a lot.  so you pick 6-7 out of those 9?  potentially 10 if we add someone?  pretty salty, and at least 2-3 guys who can go 2+ innings.

considering our rotation gets you thru the 6th in most games, that's a lot of guys to choose from for a small amount of innings.  just stay healthy.

I believe DK has only given up 3 ERs in about 18 innings since his 5 run first inning blow up against Toronto.

Even including that game against Toronto, where he gave up 6 ER's in 5 1/3 innings, he has an ERA of 2.59 and a record of 3-0 in his last 5 starts.

after 92 games:

61-31.  30 games over is the high water mark of the season.  on pace to win 107.4 games.  still one back of last year's current record, but whatevs.  run diff of +188, on pace to have the best run diff since the 1939 yankees.

13 game stretch heading into the asb where i wanted 9-4 is now off to a 6-0 start.  11-2 is certainly within reach, which would put us 33 over at the break, which is just crazytown.  4 home vs oak, 3 home vs det.  let's do this.

we now have an overall (not just starters) pitching era of 2.88 and a whip of 1.05 - let's put that in perspective.  charlie morton (who should be an all star) has an era of 2.83 and a whip of 1.12.  what we're doing is basically having 2018 morton pitch every single inning of every single game.  if our compiled stats was an actual person, he would be 7th in the al in era (behind 2 stros, so basically 5th), and 9th in whip (basically 7th) and just ahead of mccullers and morton.

our team era is better than james paxton's by over half a run.  our team whip is also better than paxton's (by 0.02), who's by far the best pitcher on the 4th best team in mlb.

Watching the Reds vs Cubs and a rightie hit a HR against Morrow to tie it up. Announcers said it was the first time a RH hitter got a HR off Morrow since 2015. Guess they don’t remember Springer’s Game 5 tying HR. Assholes.

Or Correa’s, five minutes later.

It depends on Tucker and Correa.  If Tucker needs more time at AAA, a 1 year rental corner outfielder wouldn't be a bad idea.  If Correa is out long term, a third baseman would be helpful.

Trade Correa for Machado straight up with a long term deal agreed to.  Gonna have to pay somebody and Machado doesn’t get his pussy hurt every two months

If he can truly be our go to closer then i don't think we have to make a trade at the deadline. Maybe find a lefthander for the bullpen, but i wouldn't give up anything of value.

Yep, certainly would not do another deal like last year where we gave up Teoscar for Liriano.

No thank you on DK
Still bad memories of 2015 ALDS game 5.
and that 9.00 1st inning ERA this year...

Maybe before he went 8 for 80 or whatever he deserved it.

Was hitting under .250 today

Maybe. Took him a hot streak to get to around .300 briefly, and then the massive tailspin. If he settled in at .280 for the year, I think we’d all be pretty happy.  I haven’t compared his numbers to those of OFs who didn’t get in, but I can’t imagine George would say he’s having a great year so far.

He was right there with Benintendi in the tier below Trout/Betts/Judge until the last 12 games or whatever. He'll probably do that thing where he hits 5 HR in the next 8 games and his numbers will be right there by the time the ASG comes around.

Hope you’re right. We’re on another level when he’s hot. True of a few others as well, but especially with him leading off.

But the Orioles aren't looking for a one-for-one trade.  Their problem is that they're already paying Chris Davis and Adam Jones more than Machado.  If they decide to invest that much in one player, which seems unlikely, they'll just keep him.

Giles has had solid numbers of late. But until further notice (which might never come), a lot of Houston fans are going to feel he’s just one critical appearance away from another Gerg-level meltdown. So some people are always going to hold their breaths and fear the worst. Any time Giles comes in and has an unclean inning, the doubts are going to resurface. And he seems to have quite a few innings that don’t look sharp, even if he escapes with a save.

Of course, what I just typed could, at one time or other, have been written of nearly every closer in history. But whether it’s due to his pitching, his mannerisms or some mix of both, Giles often seems especially unconfident. That, along with his 2017 playoff use, continues to fuel the belief he’s but a pitch of two away from disaster.

(I’d love to be able to look back on this post at year’s end and ask myself how anyone could have possibly doubted the guy.)

I posted this in the cord cutters thread, but will ask here too.

I have Dish and want to get the MLB.TV package for the Astros since I can't watch their games.  I have a PS3, but I believe you need a 4 for mlb.tv.  Is an amazon fire tv the best option for me?  I wouldn't mind a better option for watching amazon stuff on since I'm not crazy about the ps3 app that i use now.  I watch netflix through Dish and really wish Amazon would do something similar because it's much better than switching devices but in the meantime I'm guessing the fire tv would be a lot faster than what I have now.

NEWSFLASH - Our starting pitchers are pretty good. Here  are their rankings among American League pitchers:

ERA - (3) Verlander (8) Cole (9) Morton (13) McCullers (22) Keuchel

Innings - (2) Verlander (9) Cole (10) Keuchel (16) McCullers (17) Morton

Strikeouts - (2) Cole (4) Verlander (7) Morton (10) McCullers (27) Keuchel

WHIP - (1) Verlander (6) Cole (11) McCullers (12) Morton (33) Keuchel
