Right now our in-house options are Jonah Williams to replace Taafe and true frosh Zelus Hicks. 2nd string nickel is a walk-on who's major contribution is making the honor roll twice. In the Big 12. Obviously this exaggerates things because we can move guys around (Gerry and Bobby think Kobe Black goes to safety, for example), but I think it's going to be hard to recruit back-ups into programs, which basically means you're churning through portal dudes every season and selling them on playing in a rotation (and then they portal back out when it's clear they don't have the athleticism/experience to start). No one thinks Mack is a JAG. Williams on the other hand just isn't the player he used to be.

He’s slow to process things and has poor pocket awareness, but he’s also an elusive runner and has flashed an elite arm. I believe it was the Nebraska game, while getting hit he zipped an NFL-level throw to a tight end that was blanketed by an safety. Just a 20 yard completion in the box score but if I was a scout it’d get me interested for sure. 52 minutes ago, Vertigo said: He has the tools no doubt, but he absolutely hit a ceiling early in the season and really stopped getting better. December 11, 2025Dec 11 I am really surprised Neto isn't in the portal. I know his brother is on the team, but losing your presumptive starting spot to Connor Stroh, and then to a true freshman who quite literally could not pass block, has to be one of the biggest slaps in the face imaginable.

I had some of the same thoughts about Vasek, as he's come up some on here recently. Obviously there's injury concerns in his case, but to me that seems like a guy you'd like to keep around because you need depth that you feel good about playing. The roster can't just be badass starters, freshmen behind them, and nothing else. As you say, getting experienced guys out of the portal to fill out your 2nd string probably isn't going to be very easy.

Yeah, I think it unlikely, but possible that perhaps some reason set in that focusing on a degree given facts about one's career future. That or the self confidence (misplaced or not) that he can battle back are logical possibilities.
December 11, 2025Dec 11 We went to hilarious lengths to avoid playing Neto. Him sticking around would be bizarre.

I don't mean selling us on potential, because that shit doesn't pay the rent. How is this dude "depth" from your perspective? If Texas wants to add actual depth at Edge that has a history of production and, you know, being able to play in most games, they very well can sell their rotation to quality targets in the portal. The notion that they can't is flatly debunked by the reality that they have already done it. I'm not saying that anything is certain until someone actually gets in the motherfucker, but if Vasek has a 6 figure ask, I wouldn't blame Texas for encouraging him to go find it and then bringing in someone else in his stead. If the dude is free? Sure, keep him and get another guy anyway if you're worried about "depth". Texas will likely have 40+ guys on its roster from last season (2025) on there next season (2026), plus transfers and true freshmen. That's plenty of depth that isn't just "starters or true freshmen". Some of you guys are handwringing like middle managers who might have to fire someone for the first time.

December 11, 2025Dec 11 We're talking about portal! Not a game! Not a game! We're talking about portal! (Thurs. 12:05pm CST) By Gerry Hamilton We're talking about portal! Not a game! Not a game! We're talking about portal! Let's talk about portal to start Thursday morning. OTF takes a look at what positions of need there are. Quarterback Expected to return: Arch Manning and KJ Lacey. Incoming: Dia Bell Gone portaling: Trey Owens OTF: An experienced QB as a third teamer is something we are watching. KJ Lacey will be a solid No. 2. A redshirt is preferred and expected for Dia Bell. Doubtful Sark wants to be in a similar position as Missouri this season if the unthinkable happens. Running back Expected/possibility to return: James Simon, Christian Clark, Tre Wisner Incoming: Derreck Cooper and Jett Walker Still monitoring: Tre Wisner (NFL), Christian Clark Gone portaling: CJ Baxter, Jerrick Gibson. Rickey Stewart expected as well. OTF: An experienced and front line back is definitely on the wish list. Wide receiver Expected/eligble to return: Emmett Mosley, Parker Livingston, Ryan Wingo, Daylon McCutcheon, Deandre Moore, Jamie Ffrench, Kaliq Lockett Incoming: Jermaine Bishop Jr., Kohen Brown, Chris Stewart Still monitoring: Deandre Moore, and couple of others Gone portaling: Aaron Butler OTF: An impact wide receiver is definitely being monitored by OTF. Tight end Expected/possible to return: Jordan Washington, Nick Townsend, Emaree Winston and Spencer Shannon Incoming: Charlie Jilek Still monitoring: Jack Endries (NFL), and others OTF: A tight end is a possibility, and will be a need if Endries goes to the NFL or someone else hits the portal. Offensive line Starter expected to return: RT Brandon Baker Incoming: OT John Turntine III, OG Kaden Scherer, C/G Nicolas Robertson Still monitoring: OT Trevor Goosby (NFL), C Connor Robertson and others Gone portaling: LG Connor Stroh OTF: Three or four will be the number, depending on the NFL decision by Trevor Goosby. Right now, it's three interior players out of the portal. Defensive line Expected/eligible to return: Hero Kanu, Alex January, Maraad Watson, Josiah Sharma, Myron Charles, Justus Terry, Lavon Johnson Incoming: James Johnson and Jamarion Carlton Still monitoring: Hero Kanu (NFL) and Lavon Johnson. Gone portaling: Melvin Hills III OTF: Two over the ball players are possible. And not out of the question the number could reach three, but a third would be a 3-tech disruptor if anyone jumps in the portal. EDGE Expected/eligible to return: Colin Simmons, Lance Jackson, Zina Umeozulu, Brad Spence, Smith Orogbo, Colton Vasek Incoming: Richard Wesley Still monitoring: A couple. Gone portaling: OTF: One pass rusher is definitely possible. Linebacker Expected/eligible to return: Ty'Anthony Smith, Liona Lefau, Bo Barnes, Jonathan Cunningham Incoming: Tyler Atkinson, Rocky Cummings, hybrid LB/EDGE Kosi Okpala Still monitoring: Gone portaling: OTF: One 'backer is a definite. Defensive back Expected/eligible to return: Jelani McDonald, Kade Phillips, Xavier Filsaime, Graceson Littleton, Derek Williams Jr., Kobe Black, Warren Roberson, Jonah WIlliams, Jordon Johnson-Rubell, Wardell Mack, Zelus Hicks, Caleb Chester Incoming: CB Samari Matthews, N/S Yaheim Riley, S/DB Hayward Howard Jr., S Toray Davis Still monitoring: Malik Muhammad (NFL), Jelani McDonald (NFL), Wardell Mack and a couple of others. Gone portaling: Santana Wilson, Derrick Williams OTF: A combination of three at corner, safety and nickel are likely/definitely needed, and strong possibilities. Specialists Incoming: P Milkey Bukauskas, K Jake Collett, LS Trott O'Neal Gone portaling: K Will Stone OTF: An experienced kicker seems like a given, and experienced punter or LS is a possibility. If they feel like he's not over the injury stuff, or he's not actually good enough to hold the fort in the event of a Lance Jackson injury, then sure cut him loose. But it's interesting to me reading this thread and others around Surly, and you'll find damn near every player who isn't a surefire starter or a freshman discussed as a transfer possibility. And on an individual, player-to-player basis, that makes total sense. But we do have to fill out a depth chart, whether it's with guys that are already here or ones from the portal. I mentioned Vasek specifically because I was looking at our depth chart at edge the other day. You've got Simmons and Jackson as your starters. Great. Spence mixing in, that's good. Then Zina, who I feel like I haven't seen much about, and Orogbo who I'm almost certain I saw something along the lines of "promising but not ready". I'd say you need at least one more body in that mix. You can go to the portal and get the edge version of, I dunno, Cole Brevard, to come in and join the rotation and it likely works out OK. But it's not free; by definition you have to pay that guy more than what his current team is willing or able to pay him. Not to mention you don't really know what kind of guy he is, don't have a great handle on his medicals, etc. The post I responded to was concerned with losing the sort of "middle class" of our roster. Guys that probably ain't gonna end up stars but can fill out the depth chart. To be perfectly honest, I don't remember Vasek hardly at all this season but the official stats claim he played in all 12 games. Seems like he could fall into that category, unless, as you say, the ask is nonsense.
December 11, 2025Dec 11 Popular Post FCB with a few portal/roster notes -Texas wants Connor Robertson to return, but Robertson knows they are about to load up in the portal at OL so he is unsure what he wants to do for his final year. -"It might be unlikely for both Kobe Black and Warren Roberson to return. I'm hearing Black, who is coming off of a strong performance against Texas A&M, which included an interception, is leaning toward returning as long as his exit meeting with coaches goes well." -Wisner is leaning towards returning -Gibson did not like Chad Scott. December 11, 2025Dec 11 The problem about predicting OL numbers in the portal is that I keep wanting to say “… depending on what the coaches think about Kibble, the Colemans, etc” when they have already proven their evaluations based on practice are garbage. So can we count on those guys, Christian, Cruz, etc? I have no fucking clue. They could be decent or they could all be Strohs.
