I know Mateer likes the be called tbine but I’m calling him business decision from now on

I hate to ask, but why does Mateer like to be called "T-Bone" (assuming it's not t-bine)

Venables told the media yesterday that both Javonnie Gibson (WR from UAPB) and Eli Bowen (starting soph CB) have been practicing and both will be playing against Kent State next week. So while they do lose Mateer, which is huge, two major expected contributors will be expected to play, if not start, against Texas on 10/11.

I’m a little surprised there isn’t more jubilation over here about OU’s QB situation.

There were like 5 pages of jubilation on the tell me about ou thread.

So if Lebby were still there, with a backup qb playing, I'd assume that ou would make no attempt at achieving 1st downs, let alone scoring points and meekly take their beating.

I guess we'll see if Fatty Arbuckle is made of sterner stuff.  Or maybe it was orders from Venables all along.

What happened to Ott? They paid big money for 2 carries per game?

He was supposed to be a game changer lol

He’s in the doghouse for coach extraordinaire Demarco Murray. They think he’s a goldbricker. The emergence of Blaylock has empowered them to bury him on the depth chart. There’s an article on Sooners Illustrated arguing that Ott is key without Mateer, but I’m not sure if Murray actually reads SI or not.

OU is averaging 3.6 yards per carry.

And their leading rusher, QB Mateer, was averaging 4.4.  Of course, we know he is out.  Fwiw, they average 3.3 ypc w/o Mateer's stats.

Jordan Rodgers: John Mateer injury is 'devastating' for Oklahoma (0:44)

Jordan Rodgers explains why John Mateer's injury is a huge loss for Oklahoma. (0:44)

Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer on Thursday posted to social media that the procedure on a broken bone in his right hand was successful.

"Thank God for a successful procedure," Mateer posted to X. "Dr. Shin is the GOAT. BOOMER SOONER!!"

Dr. Steven Shin, one of the country's leading hand/wrist surgeons, performed the procedure in Los Angeles.

Sources told ESPN's Pete Thamel on Tuesday that Mateer, the early Heisman Trophy front-runner, will miss about a month after suffering the injury in Saturday's win over Auburn.

Mateer has completed 67.4% of his passes for 1,215 yards and six touchdowns this season. He's also the Sooners' leading rusher with 190 yards and five more touchdowns. Mateer ranks second nationally with 351.3 yards of total offense per game.

Oklahoma coach Brent Venables said sophomore Michael Hawkins Jr. will start the Sooners' next game -- against Kent State on Oct. 4 Hawkins started four games last season, passing for 783 yards and three touchdowns.

"He just has put together a really good body of work over the last several months, and he's always had a great work ethic and he's always been really coachable," Venables said of Hawkins. "He's hungry, he's humble and ultra talented."

Hawkins passed for 783 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 204 yards last season. One of his best highlights was a 48-yard touchdown run in a win at Auburn.

"He's a guy that understands that to play quarterback, you have to do a great job being good at just making layups," Venables said. "And don't try to win the game the first series of the game."

Receiver Deion Burks said Hawkins has matured since then and doesn't depend quite as much on his exceptional speed as in the past.

"He looks comfortable in the pocket," Burks said. "He trusts the O-line, so he's not quick to run. He's going to deliver the passes. If he scrambles, he's looking downfield to throw it. But he also can use his feet as well."

Oklahoma faces rival Texas on Oct. 11.

After a trip to South Carolina, the Sooners close out the regular season with five straight games against opponents that are currently ranked: No. 13 Ole Miss, at No. 15 Tennessee, at No. 18 Alabama, No. 20 Missouri and No. 4 LSU.

If I recall, they tried to do what Baylor did against us (and almost came back and won) in the Briles era after they went to their 3rd or 4th string (running wildcat with a skill position player).  I figured that was coming in the week leading up to it.  Clearly didn't surprise the staff either.    The actual backup that year may have been the worst QB I've ever seen take a snap at OU although Hawkins wasn't that much better last year.  Kent St. will actually be interesting to watch to see if he's developed at all as a passer.  I'm sure they will try to get him plenty of live throwing reps regardless of the score.  No doubt OU knows that if they don't have a passing threat against us they are fucked.

The okies have been saying since the spring that Hawkins looks much better with the learning experience of last year and the tutelage of Fatty Arbuckle. I don't see any reason to doubt that, as it makes basic sense. That said, the guy totally fucking sucked last year, so "much better" could mean mediocre or worse compared to other QBs. Who knows?

What I do know is that the OU OL is still dogshit. That's not going to be helpful for Hawkins. The fact that their RB room is loaded with some of the jaggiest jags who have ever jagged before, plus a few gimps and an apparent headcase, isn't going to be particularly helpful for them against the Texas D.

He’s moderately better than Sophie B. Hawkins.
