If he wants to play, which he does, and the Clippers want to pay him to play, which they do, good for him.

Also, I assume this is his last season.  Future front office move for the Clippers?  I could see him doing that or on TV

Why not?   Still get paid significant money to do something that you still love and can do at a relatively high level

He’s a declining player. 40 years old, doesn’t shoot anymore, hasn’t made All NBA since 2022, and his career earnings exceed $400 million. This isn’t a LeBron situation where he can still play at a high level.

Well, they're not paying him to be LeBron. They're paying him to help out a bench unit for 20 minutes a game.

I'd also say to provide veteran leadership but at this point, if the Clippers have anything, it's veterans.

But the vets they have aint the type of guys you want leading.   CP does resolve that.

They better not let Daugherty do any Cavs games - he's almost as homerific as Tom Heinsohn was for the Celtics in the 80s.

She said no, despite the implications.
That's her right. It's also his right to leave without her. Did she really go on a trip like that with no money in case of an emergency?

What exactly is a "high level" to you? He was 38% from 3 last season, 7th in the league in assists per game with just 1.6 turnovers, played all 82 games and had a ton of huge 4th quarters and clutch moments. Per minute and going by on/off data he was one of the best PGs in the league.

I'd much rather have Paul than fucking Bradley Beal.

Much like Morey's resume, this makes me laugh from the article. Emphasis mine.

Quote

In 2006, Morey took over as assistant general manager for the Houston Rockets. He was promoted a year later to general manager. The Rockets reached the playoffs multiple times but could never get to the Finals. Morey did win Executive of the Year in the 2017-2018 season, though.

Now he serves as the President of Basketball Operations for the 76ers, who haven't reached the conference finals since he got there in 2020.

Because he is actually accessible and talks to people about lots of different topics, so he has made a lot of friends in the media. I think he gets a lot of friendly coverage from that, plus he's been a successful GM for his career. Lots of GMs avoid anything other than the interviews they are legally obligated to do and are mostly unknown outside of boring press conferences.

Talking about ringless players

Richard Jefferson explains why Tracy McGrady is not the most talented ringless player - Basketball Network - Your daily dose of basketball

NBACentral @TheDunkCentral

Richard Jefferson says he’d choose Karl Malone over Charles Barkley because Malone was more professional, while Barkley had off-court partying issues and didn’t want to be a role model “The reason why I would pick Karl Malone over Charles is because of the level of professionalism that Karl Malone always approached. So when I look at Karl Malone versus Charles — when Charles was in Philly, he was in and out of shape, and then he would — some of his off-the-court partying that we knew about…I'm saying Charles was a rebel. He's not a role model. So I'm not taking shots at him. But I'm saying, when you look at a guy like Karl Malone who trained for eight hours a day, he played for 19 years. He was second in scoring. And if his body would have held up, he probably would have been the all-time leading scorer,"

Wow, that Fox extension is expensive. I thought he would give the Spurs a discount, since he wanted to go there and made that his trade destination. They have a lot of guards to work with, but figuring out the balance is going to be difficult.

Like I said in the spurs thread, the Fox extension was assuredly negotiated before they made the trade. It’s a lot easier to swallow while Wemby, Castle and Harper are on rookie contracts. The Keldon Johnson and Devin Vassell contracts are probably worse deals if you want to criticize the Spurs front office.

Probably. but that was before lottery luck and not expecting to land anywhere in the top 2 of the draft where the 2nd best player is a PG. Hes still going to be paid top 10 money for maybe being a top 30 player. ick

Vassell yea, gross. Johnson aint as bad. He doesnt miss a shot vs the Wolves so i can allow it

So basically they promised Fox/Clutch the super max, and then of course they drafted the better player in Harper.

I wouldn’t call it tripping over own dick as a poster did upthread, but it’s unenviable pact made with the Prince of Darkness/Adele’s boyfriend. The mistake they made is letting Clutch in the door.

First, it's not the super max, it's the max. Huge difference. And if you will notice, every all star level player (and some non all stars) is getting the max these days. You see the comparisons to Luka's salary over the next three years. Well, when Luka comes up in 3 years, the Lakers are going to have pay him something like $83 million a year. I promise you Fox's next contract (if he's even still on the team) will look much differently. Secondly, Harper is 19 years old and has never played a minute of an NBA game.  I doubt he's one of the best 25-30 players in the league right off the bat like Fox is, and there's almost zero chance he's the better player right now. The Spurs are trying to compete for the playoffs right now.

Also, they just locked up Fox for the absolute prime years of his career (age 28-32) and he has no option in year 4. If Harper turns out to be that much better than him and Fox becomes disposable, he's still a tradeable asset. And again, it doesn't blow their cap because the rest of their core is on rookie deals. Worst case is that they end up in the tax one season when Harper's extension kicks in but that's four years down the road.

With regard to Clutch... you also need to consider what the Spurs had to give up to get Fox, which was hardly anything for an all star point guard in his prime. Look what Orlando gave up for Bane. Look what the Knicks gave up for Bridges. You gotta give Clutch some credit for the way they played their hand in Sacramento. The Spurs gave back a highly protected Chicago FRP that was likely never to convey. They gave up an even more protected Charlotte FRP that ended up converting into two seconds. They gave up their own 2027 pick which should be in the 20's if Wemby can stay healthy. They gave up the Minnesota unprotected in 2031. They didn't even have to give Sac their own FRP pick back that they fleeced them out of to facilitate the Derozan/Barnes trade. And they got to unload Zach Collins and his shitty contract on top of that.

Would I have liked Fox to sign for less? Sure, but this is just the way business is done in the NBA today. I don't get the criticism at all. And like I said, I promise this extension was baked into the deal in the beginning when they made the trade. Now, I don't know that they make the trade in hindsight if they knew they were going to luck into the number 2 pick in the draft, but so what? Hindsight is 20/20. That they got Harper is gravy and yet another asset.
