I appreciate the insight, but I think everyone who has been paying attention has pieced together that (1) Arch's problems are mental, and (2) that they are only showing up on game day. I'm not trying to write a dissertation here, Sydney.

That is surprisingly philosophical for you.

I'm not really looking for answers to why it's happening, I just want to know that something is being done. From what insiders have said, it sounds like the staff is being shockingly laissez faire about a big fucking deal. I don't need to know their plan, but it would be nice to know that they are taking it seriously and doing something about it. For example, CTJ's 4th paragraph in the post above is at least some kind of analysis. That's more than we've heard from the staff or our insiders.

To be clear, I am 100% on board with Sark as a coach. I have a lot of faith in him and his staff, although my estimation of Milwee and Flood is somewhat lowered. I just would like some indication that they are taking this as seriously as we are. For fuck's same, Immamac is making "should we bench Arch" polls. That's a sign of a fanbase that's on the ledge.

I get that I'm being somewhat alarmist and this sentiment is not really directed at you. But there has been so much excitement and expectation for Manning since he committed and the whole thing is imploding. It is one of the biggest disappointments I've ever experienced as a fan.

SureAboutThat.gif? This post is so long it could be one of mine.

as for the rest of your post, what do you suggest the staff do to fix the yips? Act more serious to the media and say if he doesn’t come out hot this weekend he’s going to get the hook? Because I’m pretty sure the attitude sark is taking externally, and maybe internally, is about the only attitude that makes sense with a situation where the player is mentally pressing. heaping more pressure on the guy seems like a bad idea. Uou act confident and breezy, otherwise you’ve got not no shot at a reclamation.

Funny thing about Arch. I trust him more to hit a 30 yard route, than a 10 yard route. It makes no sense, but the numbers bear it out.

Outfield throw vs infield throw

He can throw hard in a straight line. He has no feel on any pass with an arch, short, medium, or deep.

It’s like a chip shot follow-thru. Your instinct is to slow it down upon strike so you dont hit it too far. Same thing.

Right now he’s throwing the football like I play golf. Not good.

I understand that insiders are dealing with a kind of tension. Their job is to tell us what is actually going on - that's what we pay them for. But they can't tell us everything relayed in confidence, because that could cost them their access. That's not an easy line to walk and I am sympathetic. But don't piss on my neck and tell me it's raining. I've got eyes and I'm not dumb.

To be clear, however, I'm not just talking about Bobby. He's in the same jackpot as the rest of them, but he usually shoots it pretty straight and will tell you what he really thinks.

You asked "what is actually going on?" and got responses to that question. "what is the staff doing about it?" is a different question. Also, expecting the staff to comment on anything regarding Yips Manning's treatment is a level of naivete I wouldn't have otherwise attributed to you.

The truth is that the coaches and players are as confused by Farce Manning's in-game collapses as anyone else. He's looked great in practices for years and looked great in the fall camp run up to Ohio State, right until he bounced the ball to Moore on the first pass.

Do you think reporters like Burton can publicly say that? It's hardly productive for even me to say that, but I'm kind of sick of the middling discussion you guys are all having about the coaching staff as it relates to Arch Ankiel.

There's no grand conspiracy to elevate a guy because of his name. He's not losing practices. Other guys aren't performing better. The guy looks fine and then is going out in games and melting all the fucking way down. Maybe he's always wanted to be in theatre and this is his grand interview as performance art in an effort to gain entry to Juilliard and then he can put this whole football thing behind him? This is just bizarre shit.

I do think one of the biggest things Sarkisian can help course correct on is removing 3rd and 4th reads for a bit. Sounds absurd, but that's an issue, from my perspective. He needs to be: primary, secondary, check down/run/throw it away - 1, 2, 3. Dude is taking too long to go through progressions and then panic throwing.

I listened to Klatt earlier today and he's theory is game is moving too fast for him so he's processing too quickly/not letting the play to develop.  I.e., moving on from his first read too soon before it opens up then pressing resulting in his mechanics getting all out of sorts.   He talked about it for a few minutes in more detail but it was a plausible theory.

WTF.  You are actually expecting Sark and/or the staff to either panic publicly or leak that they're fucking panicking through insiders?  You think because they aren't throwing stones at players or projecting panic that the offensive staff is not taking the offensive collapse seriously?  They are doing and saying exactly any competent or rational person would expect them to say under the circumstances.  Nobody is going to tell you exactly what is being said behind closed doors in meetings nor should they. Two of the least satisfying Texas wins I've ever seen were against UTEP.  I really don't want to look up who was the coach on that last game.

Honestly, we just need to let Arch do his thing...

I know that Sark has built up a lot of goodwill with our insiders. And that goodwill is more than justified. But it seems like they've abandoned a lot of the critical thinking skills they developed when we had shittier coaches.

The offense is alarmingly bad right now. The fact that the staff doesn't seem to be pissed off about it is even more alarming. I would hope they are as shocked about this situation as we are.

You must be watching very different press conferences than I have been.

I don't think anyone is unaware of how bad our offense has been in terms of on-field production. The only long-term things I'm concerned with are red zone offense and stupid penalties; those have been more it less constant throughout Sark's tenure, and they ARE concerns.

But most of the REST of the concerns the fans have seem to be more based on stupidly unrealistic expectations for our QB, WRs and OL. What CTJ said about Parker Livingstone - that if he's our best WR, we're in trouble - is haunting us; we've given him crap because Jaggy HAS been our best WR, but the other side of that coin is... where's the other guys?

Arch has the yips. Psychologists understand it better now. A few billable hours with a therapist, and there's nothing to worry about.

Yeah, that's fair. I don't expect the staff to give a detailed presentation about what they're doing to fix it. My hope is more to get some kind of insight from our insiders based on their experience. For example, it's obvious that the coaches are taking this situation seriously because how could they not. But I'm tired of hearing our insiders just repeat the line that the problem is temporary and that it will take care of itself. I would like to hear what Gerry and Bobby think about what the staff is doing.

I agree that you can't heap more pressure on the kid, but what are your options then? I like CTJ's suggestion of reducing the number of reads and just telling him to pull the trigger sooner. You could also take a Bull Durham approach and give him permission to fuck up - just start throwing the ball more and don't worry about being perfect.

I coached baseball and we had a kid who's dad had fucked up his swing. The boy was constantly worrying about where his feet were, where his hands were, keeping his elbow tight on his side. And he couldn't hit the ball. Eventually he stopped actually swinging the bat and started placing it in front of the ball, almost like a bunt or a cricket bat, because he was so petrified of missing. I took him aside and told him to just swing the bat as hard as he could. I don't care where your hands or feet are, I don't care where your elbows go. Just eyes on the ball, and swing as hard as you physically can. And of course, the kid immediately started hammering dingers (otherwise I wouldn't be telling this story).

I don't know what the equivalent of that advice is to a high level QB. But I would like to think that Sark does.

And goddamnit, but you fucking got me to write a dissertation, didn't you.

I mean, by my count, you've now written 2 dissertations.

If I were a head coach, and I had a great relationship with 995ers, and shared info, there is still a 100% chance that under no circumstances would I tell Bobby, or Gerry, or fucking ANYONE other than the company line of "This will fix itself and the offense is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO close." Because that's it, that's the message externally, while you fix shit internally. Some shit you just don't talk about outside the facility, no matter how good your relationship with a "journalist" is, generally. Because any other message gets out and then a player's parent hears it, tells his kid, who tells Arch, and then you're back at square one. Nope.

I don't want to hear what Gerry and Bobby think the staff is doing, because it's 100% made up and irrelevant, and also for those guys guessing and putting out bad information does nothing but potentially sour my relationship with the staff, on top of seeing my point above and being further damaging to the player. "I heard they have Arch switching his pronouns so it's not actually him out there playing, it's someone else who can complete passes" would go over really well.

If you trust that sark has that kind of proper advice for the QB, why don't you trust he's actually doing it and instead bleeding out over here dEmANdINg ANswErS?

I said this before, what is the drill to fix the Arch's mental state? I have 0 idea. I think Arch needs to fix Arch. This is one reason why I have hammered the other ugly aspects of the offense. I feel like there is a lot of improvement to be had across the offense. Those other aspects can be improved with accountability and practice. I am not sure you can say that for Arch. Even outside of Arch, I feel like the majority of the offense performs their responsibility at a reasonable level about 75% of the time. 10 players running at 75% means there is around a 5-6% chance they all do their job on any given play, which sadly does not feel too far off.

OL is a mess. They looked lost running OZ vs UTEP. How the hell is that possible, given it has been the core running play for the offense the last few years? Lot of new starters, but what the hell did they practice the last few years? Plenty more I can come up with there. See PFF grades

I watched Arch make a good read and throw to Winston only to have Nibblet come across the field and lay a nice hit on Winston breaking up the pass. How the fuck does that happen?

I watched the OL do a great job on split zone and Clark decides to try and bust it outside and turn a 7+ yard gain into a 1 yard gain.

How about WR/TE blocking? Niblett struggles to block for screens. Are we sure that is a Niblett issue or coaches asking him to do something he is really not suited for? Thought I saw a play where 2 TEs ran into each other vs UTEP.

The offense is OU 2024 bad right now. Sark needs to cull the playbook. Focus on few things the entire offense can execute at a reasonable level. Right now Arch running the football is the best aspect of the offense. He has been solid with the deep ball. GT counter seems to be the one of the better runs for the OL. How about using those things as a foundation? Perhaps if the offense gets a couple concepts they can execute consistently, it will help Arch regain his confidence.

QUICK FINAL THOUGHTS

Can we blame the offensive line for at least some portion of the offense's struggles thus far in 2025?

We know we're not going to convince anyone who's watched Texas closely to start the 2025 season that Arch Manning is blameless here; as even he would tell you (and has told you) that he absolutely needs to play better. The question isn't whether Manning has struggled, but one question that many have is ... why?

A lack of weapons? Something in his head? The yips? The offensive line? The playcalling? An undependable run game? Bert Auburn?

Thus far in 2025 among starting Texas offensive linemen, 41% of disruption allowed has come in the passing game (sacks, QB hits and QB pressures allowed), 39% has come in the running game (TFLs and run-stuffs allowed), and 20% has come via accepted penalties among the offensive line.

In 2024, 46% of the disruption came in the passing game (56 combined sacks, QB hits and QB pressures allowed); 30% came in the run game (37 total combined TFLs and run-stuffs allowed); and 24% came via accepted penalties along the offensive line (29 total).

So, the offensive line as a unit this year is generally more likely to allow disruptive plays in the run game than they did last year, and less likely to allow QB disruption on any given down. It doesn't necessarily mean that the unit is a better pass-pro unit than it was last year, it only means that this group, in this year, has thus far had a lower percentage of its disruptive plays come via disruption of the QB.

With that said, we all know that the offensive line this season is not as good as it was last season. It was never going to be, and was never predicted to be. It's just a fact of life when you lose 4 of five starters to the NFL. Through three games, the average Deep Dig grade for offensive linemen this season has been 77.52, whereas in 2024, it was 79.46. We know that might not seem like a lot, but in the Deep Dig scale, that is the difference between a serviceable-to-good unit overall and a unit whose average is bordering on the level of a possible NFL prospect collectively. So, we have that out of the way, the offensive line is not as good.

But, let's circle back to what we just said. That the difference has been between a monster OL in 2024 and one that is grading out at a serviceable-to-good level. The Texas 2025 OL, despite it's mish-mash of characters (DJ Campbell is an enigma from down-to down who grades out all like an All-Pro on one play and a disaster on the next; Connor Stroh is the most unlikely starter at Texas we can remember given the circumstances; Brandon Baker came in as a total mystery box and Cole Hutson's best attribute is that he knows the offense better than anyone else) has operated at a level that should not inhibit a college football gameplan. It's what the Deep Dig scale (linked above) literally says:

"GAMES IN THIS AREA REPRESENT GOOD TO VERY GOOD DIVISION I PLAY AND TEAMS WITH AN ENTIRE OFFENSIVE LINE OPERATING IN THIS AREA OVER THE COURSE OF THE GAME SHOULD EXPERIENCE NO DETRIMENT TO OFFENSIVE GAME PLAN DUE TO THE OFFENSIVE LINE."

If you look at the overall average of starters and major contributors in snaps-per-disruption-allowed, the average number of snaps among this 2025 group (not counting Conner Robertson whose sample seems too small to throw in, but who would elevate the number if we did) is 30.69. In 2024 it was 31.38. Practically the same. However, thus far in 2025, you'd be right to say that it doesn't really track to measure things in this way because Trevor Goosby is juicing the average big-time with his (probably unsustainable) 66.67 s/dis number while the others are much further down, unlike 2024 where the group was more evenly distributed. And that is true.

So let's just look at the numbers in totality and not at the per-player averages: In 2024 of the 3,863 offensive line snaps charted, disruption was allowed every 31.66 of them. Of the 1,030 snaps once every 26.4 of them. Perfectly acceptable. Not 2024 good, but fine. So much better than we've seen over the recent decade, just not the best of the best. All things considered, the "drop-off" that we're seeing from the Texas offensive line in 2025 should be considered on the level of what should have been a "glass-half-full" preseason projection of the unit.

Arch Manning needs to play better, and we think he will. He doesn't even need to improve from what we saw in his 2024 starts -- heck, we'd take 2024 Arch in a millisecond at this point. That QB in this offense, with this defense on the other side of the football can go win at an extremely high level.

We need to see CJ Baxter and Tre Wisner get healthy, because an offense cannot make a living running Christian Clark and Jerick Gibson between the tackles. James Simon has shown some nice flashes in this regard but he is a true freshman. Clark can be an explosive piece in the receiving game as his open-field vision is great after-catch -- much, much more so than it is behind the line of scrimmage diagnosing run blocks at this point.

And, in the end, we simply need Arch Manning, the CEO of the on-field product, to play at what was previously considered to be his minimum baseline level. All things that are attainable. But we can't blame the offensive line.

Onward to Sam Houston.

Just shut the fuck up if your argument, declaratively, is “Stroh must be the option, trust the coaches”. No thanks. We are witnessing one of the worst OL performances at the P4 level, ever, if they continue to play Stroh. He’s not just incompetent, he’s harmful. I don’t remember seeing anything this bad with guys playing under Tim Nunez and Mac McWhorter, which is stunning.

There’s something emotional going on with some decisions being made right now. Anyone trying to reason their way out of this is incorrect and can get fucked.

I stated in the SJST game thread, and repeated here afterwards, that in pre-game warmups he was winding up and releasing his throws faster than I’ve ever seen a QB do that, to the point where it seemed like a drill. It was Uncle Rico like. It would be great if some early arrivers to the game could watch him in warmups to see if he does that again.

I think that is a big part of the problem. I think Sark is running TOO many concepts. Its not an offense, it is a playbook. GT counter has probably looked the best to me. That is just off casual watching. Zone looked to really bad. Sark needs to pare the offense down. Focus on a couple concepts and drill the shit out of them. Its a young team. They have shown they cannot handle an NFL playbook. Find a couple runs that the OL can execute and build an offense around it.

Sark being upbeat isn't a surprise. Mack told a story about none other than Barry Switzer. Mack said that as OC for OU, his team was performing poorly against Tulsa or a similar opponent. At halftime, he lit into his offense. They ended up losing, and as he started to apologize to Switzer, Switzer told him, 'I knew we were going to lose because you convinced the offense they couldn't perform, and they were going to lose. Next time, figure out how to lift their spirits and get them to perform.

Yips aka "Steve Sax Syndrome"  😬

I actually suffered the yips throwing a baseball when I was playing in my 20s in men’s league ball. I couldn’t throw the ball during warm ups. I would chunk it straight into the ground. The only time I could throw normally was from the outfield when I would just uncork it. But warming up, I had to just throw against the fence. It was so weird. Lasted a couple of months and actually didn’t get better until I switched to beer league softball. It was all in my head and I couldn’t shake it until I stopped thinking.

Chance Mock was suggesting to have Arch roll out, as it takes away the thinking aspect and just allows him to play ball.

IDGAF what the answer is, anything to remove the chaos in his head.
