Wow, I truly didn't see Heuple on the hot seat averaging 9 wins a season since he got to Knoxville. They were hovering just above .500 for 15 year prior to his arrival. That one really suprises me, and he peaked at 11 wins which was their best record in 20+ years. I guess the wind is blowing that direction this year. That or losing to the newcomers in OU really chapped some hides in Knoxville. Well, that and consistently losing to Georgia and Alabama.

Lots of Bama gear running around in Tennessee..

"AAC Burner"?

Looks like a parody account, based on his posts. At least it's mildly amusing.

Have you happened to pay attention to surlyhorns.com throughout this season? Not so hard to image such a situation.

Heupel at Tennessee is the James Franklin of Matt Rhules.

I agree and will die on this hill: Franklin is in the top tier of coaches actually available to hire and is better than several hot names.

To your point, VaTech or Maryland will be a good fit for him. Now it comes down to who can afford to pay him more?

Probably UMD?

Lower-tier P4 teams have to be thinking they'll take a retread if they're jumping in this year. I don't see any other logic. And there will be plenty available.

With all the chatter on sitting HCs, they could go for an up and coming coordinator.

Looks like the UMD news was bad info (and the Terps would be foolish to jump into this). So Tech looks more likely and I think he’ll do very well there.

Jeff Traylor is known as a "program builder"?  He's only been a head coach at one college program.

Kent State already made their hire.

Michigan State is approaching on the clock status. Dave Doeren might have just saved his job in Raleigh.

If Michigan State pulls the plug on their coach, does he just go back to his alma mater, where he never should have left in the first place?

Coaching contracts and their role in coaching the carousel this season.

Signed-

Curt Cignetti signed an eight-year, $93 million extension last month. $15 million if he were to leave

Matt Rhule signed extension through 2032 with an AAV of $11.7 million. $15 million if he were to leave

Yet to sign-

Lane Kiffin- Currently at $9 million with a revolving 6 year deal that ranks 10th in the country and 5th in the SEC. With LSU and Florida interested an extension should be announce before the end of the year in the $11-13 million range. $3 million buyout if he left. Currently connected with every job open.

Eliah Drinkwitz- Just signed an extension through 2029 at $9 million. $5 million buyout if he left. With a strong finish him and his agent will be winners of the Kiffin runner up sweepstakes.

Josh Huepel- Signed the same extension as Drink. If he leaves before Dec 15th the buyout is $8 million and $6 million after. LSU and Tennessee boards believe he is in play.

Jedd Fish- Signed a 7 year deal worth $7.75 million in 2024. Buyout to leave before next season is $10 million. Florida Alum and known job hopper.

Kenny Dillingham- Signed through 2029 at $5.8 million. Buyout to leave is $4 million after Dec 1. ASU alum but will be highly sought after with another strong finish.

Jeff Brohm- Signed through 2029 at $5.9 million. $1 million dollar buyout if he were to leave. Louisville alum but has been linked to PSU.

Mike Elko- Signed through 2029 at $7 million base (heavy incentives and 1 year added for playoffs). Buyout if he were to leave $5.5 or $6 million. Still linked to PSU and will have the aggie faithful begging for an extension before the end of the year.

Brent Key- Signed through 2029 at $4.5 million. TBD on buyout to leave. He is a GT alum but being interviewed allegedly by PSU this week.

Setting aside Cignetti who's already got his pound of flesh, I really think Elko and Kiffen stand to profit the most out of all this insanity. Others will too, but I think both their current employers are likely to go all in on contracts to keep them. Both can leverage that power to stay put or move on.

What's the status of the Mel Tucker termination lawsuit?  If he prevails, that buyout is gargantuan.  If they settle, it'll still be in the tens of millions.

Zero chance. Only a big pocket blue blood with a good NIL and money situation is gonna even peak his interest. I think he will eventually get plucked but its gonna be really lucrative and big time.

None of those aspects apply to Auburn. (Sorry Surly AU fans)

The only reason to go there is to get paid, because they will definitely do that for you.

I think Kiffin to Florida simply makes too much sense for it not to happen. That said I think Fisch might be the best option.

The bloom is off the rose for Heupel after home losses to Georgia and OU.

aggy is going to have to give Elko a Jimbo-style contract to keep him.

We will see about that. They were so proud of their incentive laden contract and would not be shocked to see them balk at paying $12 million to Elko and $7.5 to Jimbo

Sumerall is an Alabama native and did well at Troy. Or they can talk themselves in to Jimbo, who could be looking at a $15 million per year all in salary with the aggy buyout still on the books.

Where Dillingham ends up, I am particularly curious about.

Maybe they are moreso than I am aware, but I am surprised that more contracts aren't more heavily incentive-based.

I found a few incentive laden contracts but in Elkos case he would need to make the playoffs and a semi final every year to make the same money as Deion Sanders does for going 4-8. Those deals break down quickly when another school offers $100 million guaranteed.

I will add to the Elko contract that only 75% is of the contract is guaranteed. Penn State could/should put pressure on them with that lopsided deal favoring the school.

I don't think being fiscally responsible cost them those coaches.

Without knowledge of the accompanying NIL promises and their veracity, how is anyone supposed to actually differentiate between a lot of these jobs?

LSU - no AD, no university president and a meddlesome governor is running the goat rodeo and threatening to have the state AG approve the contract

Auburn - boosters will make up a fake scandal to get you fired

Florida - shitty AD and no permanent university president

What are the NIL situations at these jobs? Thats 10x more important than anything else in this environment.

LSU is such a mess that it very well might impact who they can hire.  I think most potential coaches will overlook Florida's issues.

Excluding NIL, it’s def Florida at the top. The other 2 depends - is the money and NIL worth the headache of rogue boosters or having the governor breathing down your neck

Posted

I’m not saying ole miss and auburn are top 5 jobs but why can’t they keep/get a good coach? Don’t they have the resources? I just remember both schools, when they were able to cheat, make it hard for us to get the same recruits.

Is it because they can’t cheat anymore and it’s NIL?

Didn’t kiffin have the number 1 class last year from the portal? I guess I’m not understanding why kiffin would go to LSU or florida if he had the resources for the portal last year. I mean, i get it those schools are bigger and better but when ole miss/auburn use to cheat they could get anyone.

Auburn may be a cesspool but LSU doesn’t sound any better right now with the governor involved.
