glad someone else mentioned this. She spends paragraphs thanking Jesus and God but I haven’t seen anything from her thanking the doctors and nurses who are, literally, saving his life. (If she has, I retract this statement, somewhat.)

It's fine. Whatever gets them through it. I know how stressful and upseting this situation can be. I am sure when speaking to the doctors she is being gracious.

As far as Ship being MAGA...well I didn't need to know that. I can only hope he fully recovers and some day sees the error of his ways if that is the case.

I just like to point out that they must have prayed hard enough for the other team to be cursed. Can weird people out, but you ask them why God favored one team over another.

Kinda odd for them to assume the supreme being is that self-centered. And obviously only picks winners based on who "thanks" the hardest. As if every losing team in America has no believers. Pretty sure the God i believe in is above a hollow ego-trip, but that's just me....

Are you a sports superstar making millions? If not, maybe you're not praying hard enough.

just sayin GIF

The real answer is that a lot of these athletes don't believe in any of the shit they spout after a game, it's just whatever their agent told them to say. When you praise Jesus for a win with the cameras in your face, and 2 hours later you're doing cocaine off of a call girl's ass and an hour later trying to figure out what to do with a dead hooker, you're probably not all that big into the whole religion thing.

Why are you guys bent out of shape about this? If anything the God squads on football teams are much less obnoxious than they were decades ago.

Yeah I don't know for sure what any of these guys really believe but a lot of it is just something to say. That fucking sex creep coach at Michigan also said lots of God stuff. Just like people say thoughts and prayers when in fact not many of them are actually kneeling and praying about whatever it is they are saying they are praying for. It is just something you say.

It’s almost like they are completely full of shit and don’t believe in anything.

I roll my eyes when athletes paint eye black in the shape of a cross under each eye. Performative Christianity. If they think it will protect them and the other players from injury, I can imagine that God would laugh at them and ask why they didn’t use the common sense He provided them and not knock heads against someone else.

I just figure they'll end up in a rock band that does disco songs...

Braveheart, among other things, factors in with the facepainting. It is extremely prevalent in the academy teams, but to be fair, some of those fuckers will be painting their faces at their real job for a while after they graduate.

Edited by Iceman

I'm an atheist, but my understanding of the post-game "all glory to God" is just an acknowledgement and appreciation for God giving them the opportunity and ability to play, not literally for picking a winner.

The performative Christianity is definitely eyerolly but player interviews are about the dumbest thing in the world already. They are only watched because we (collectively) are too lazy to change the channel after the game.

You are right of course, but sadly what I have found is that very many MAGA true believers are decent human beings who simply do not see the connection between the politics they support and the consequences for the people they know and love, or even themselves.

I went to high school with the mother of a nonbinary teen. Her ex-husband and his family are fundamentalists who have mistreated the child and abused the mother. Both mother and child have been ridiculed and cyber bullied in their own exurban community, leading them back into Dallas proper and seeking fellowship and resources in the queer community. Which, of course, has received them with open arms. About half of the mom’s posts on social media are about acceptance and equality. The other half is stuff like this:

Yeah at a certain point the "stupid" explanation doesn't work anymore. That's just plain old hate if they keep getting the consequences of their choices and opinions shoved on their face, and they refuse to reconsider

I don’t think it’s hate- it’s just a tribal affinity like wearing a longhorn cap. They say the words and post the memes and vote Republican the same way I wear an orange sweatshirt.

They’ll say really over-the-top offensive shit in mixed company, and then get very hurt and surprised if anyone gets offended. “I didn’t mean you,” they say. “Why can’t we respect each other’s views?”

Inside their world that makes sense, because why would you be offended by a shirt. It’s like January 6th. Was that an attempt to overthrow the government? Or was it just a pep rally?

“I don’t mean you” is not just not a defense to supporting cruelty, it’s a lie. It’s a rot to the core. The only way to ever get past that much rot is for the whole forest to burn. They chose this.

And I will forever hate them for it. They took an amazing country, and burned it down. For no good reason.

I’m not making excuses, but it’s simply a fact that there is often a huge disconnect between their personal behaviors/values and their politics, and that gap has never been bigger.

Most people simply don’t think about politics beyond tribal membership.

In other words “They know not what they do.”

Taking this one separately because.

What is happening today is entirely continuous with eight years of Reagan and eight more of GW Bush. Trump has just taken the mask off.

So if you are going to say “they chose evil on purpose,” are you including yourself and the people around you who set this table? Did you not also make that choice?

The 2016 election happened. I said “this leads to fire and blood.” And it has, and there will be more, and I’m ready for that.

But I also think you are redeemable. And so are the people around you. And so are some of the people in MAGA today. And for that reason I’m not going to write them all off or pretend that they understand their own politics anymore than today’s ex-Republicans did 20-30 years ago.

But it's the mask that makes all the difference.

Elaborating. As I see it, the "excuse" you're making is that people a) have to accept a mixed bag of policies they agree with and disagree with from a party or candidate allegiance (true enough) and b) they don't delve too deeply into the distasteful policies because they're dumb or disengaged.

But when the hateful policies are front and center and impossible to ignore, it changes the game.

What drives the disconnect? Go talk to somebody who was involved in either side of the Rwandan genocide about that. I wouldn’t call it grace and I’m not excusing anything. The disconnect is just part of the human condition. You can accept that or not, but I’m sure if you ask them if “kid gloves” was the cause of the civil war they’ll have a lot to say about that one too.

I agree that there are plenty of people who just pull the lever every 4 years then completely check out of politics. And, yes, you can be completely oblivious and still be decent to those around you (but only those around you). No argument there. But you described a meme sharing January 6th denier. They're shit people, and if they can't even keep their offensive, conspiratorial rhetoric down in public, what do you think is really rattling around in their heads?

The only "decent" Trump voters left--and I have a few among friends and family that are good, normal people--choose to be willfully ignorant and woefully misinformed, usually with the rationale that they're above politics and everyone in Washington is all the same anyway. And they're still pretending it's 2017. "The media is out to get him. I don't like the guy, but some of his policies have been pretty good." And those "policies" usually boil down to some combination of these 4 idea:

1) Taxes are dumb, and I don't want to pay them.

2) I like guns.

3) Well, I'm Christian, so I vote Republican.

4) Did you hear what they're saying/doing/allowing/forcing in California? [insert socialism, homelessness, crime, transexual, immigration, taxes again, etc. grievance]

So at what level of selfishness and chosen ignorance to the plight of others do you stop being decent? And, in my case, these are people who have the means to not be so selfish.

Don’t let any maga friend or relative get away with being intentionally ignorant of the facts. If you mention how 2 of the 3 shots in MN were thru the drivers window therefore proving the ICE agent wasn’t being hit, don’t stop when they say they haven’t heard that. Show them the pictures and don’t let them change the topic.

And don’t let them stand on some story that the agent was previously hit by a car. If that truly traumatized him, then he shouldn’t be placed in the scenario where there are cars present. He can be in a office filling out paperwork.

Right, I wasn't and my excuse is that I was 14, which is pretty fucking valid, as I wouldn't be able to vote for four more years.

And I didn't have the internet to do a deep dive on what Reagan really stood for. Incidentally, I remain a big fan of federalism and often think that states should "act first" in matters of government rather than defer or default to the federal government, except in particular and relatively unique situations.

And the thing that made me not a Republican anymore was the increasing appearance of retrograde social and cultural conservatism. That angle caused me to delve deeper into more subtle bad policies.

But now the hate is in your face. It's impossible to ignore, as is the constant lying.

That’s a good question. I don’t think it’s a level but the capacity for cognitive dissonance. People in rural Texas have condemned their our communities to die. It’s not like they aren’t suffering too.

Shit got traction with him because he got the evangelicals on board, but I'd argue the evil in the modern conservative movement starts with Nixon.

  • Sabotaged peace talks with North Vietnam to influence the 1968 election.

  • Created an enemies list and spied on the American opposition.

  • Started the War on Drugs as a way to attack recently won civil rights.

  • Used corrupt campaign dollars through secret slush funds for illegal donations from corporations and the rich.

  • Obstructed justice by repeatedly defying special prosecutor and congressional subpoenas for the release of WH tapes. Watergate/Saturday Night Massacre.

Edit: I should add that the evil shit in the modern conservative movement was there before Nixon, but he was the first to gain power.

The environment has changed drastically. It is much harder to avoid politics now compared to 40 years ago.
