A close friend of Scott invited me to go with them to a game in Fort Worth against TCU several years ago.   We rode in his Cadillac.  The only necessities were a big bucket of fried chicken and lots of whiskey.  During the game, some TCU pricks had broken the horns off the hood of the car.   I was the only one sober enough to drive us back to Austin.  He wanted the Doug Supernaw song "Red and Rio Grande" on a loop all the way home.   When we got back, Scott gave me a t-shirt that said, "I drove the caddy home."  That was my first and only trip with them, but it was a blast. I hope he has a speedy recovery.

Red and Rio Grande should be played at every home game.

Give em hell Scott

RIP Supe

Scott hates TCU with a passion.  Don’t think this was his only misadventure with the toads.

Great article on Scott from The Daily Texan...

https://thedailytexan.com/2018/07/17/ultimate-longhorn-baseball-fan-continues-to-cheer-on-texas/

I loved "The Wild Bunch" -- always remember a guy coming into the Texas baseball games wearing a President Nixon mask and always accompanied by some Secret Service guys... 😂😂😂😂😂😂

I was a kid at a baseball game when the Houston Cougar players climbed into the stands and went after "The Wild Bunch" after one of the Coog players girlfriend threw a Coke on "The Wild Bunch".

Pretty sure a guy in " The Wild Bunch" retaliated by throwing his spitcup contents back on her.  My Dad and I were sitting only a few rows behind what went down.   It was...

giphy.gif

This is a pretty accurate account of what happened. The guy that got the Coke thrown on him is also the one that retaliated with what was handy which was his spitcup. It was about to get ugly when the UT cops made the scene and broke it up. That guy with the spitcup went on to graduate from UT Law School and became the assistant DA for a county in East Texas. I'm not sure if he has retired or not, but I know the good folks there do not know of his sordid past. So, I will not reveal his name here.

Wilson was of course in that Nixon mask and yes some of us had to be the Secret Service guys. This was called the "State of the Rag Address" he gave each year at the start of the season. It mimicked the State of the Union Address given by the President each year. Sometimes one of us would stand at the top of the steps and introduce him like they do the President in the House Chamber. Trying to remember what year he finally quit doing it. He did stop wearing the Nixon mask while doing it and then it stopped all together. That bit got kind of stale and others took on more timely things would take its place. Such as the refs marching in throwing flags after that fateful Cotton Bowl game with all the personal fouls and unsportsman like conduct penalties against Miami. I think I still have frostbite from the weather and the score from that game.

FYI, the reason Scott can’t speak right now is the sedation.  They will take the breathing apparatus out in the morning and they will drop the sedation.  Doctors have assured that normal functions will resume at that time.  He has a long recovery ahead, including more stents in a different artery.  That will occur in Austin after recovering from this one.

As mentioned, great treatment at the airport & UF Downtown Hospital were vital to his pulling through.  Thoughts & prayers are appreciated and a win tomorrow would lift his spirits too.

🤘🤘🤘

A win would please Wilson and everybody else. Bad news did come down after his surgery to put in the two stents, which went well. He is under strict doctors' orders I have been told by people on scene at the hospital that he not be allowed to watch the game tomorrow, as no undue stress is allowed at this point.

I’m no doctor, but do they know who they’re dealing with here? The stress of not being able to watch the game might be more than whatever he deals with watching the game.

this was going to be game 597.   so, due to the obvious hospitalization it will end at 596

baseball is 1500+    He missed a series back in 1999 or 2000 otherwise that streak would have been close to 3,000

It doesn’t count  if you miss a game because of a heart attack…..

Fuck.  I never took a class at Texas, but I spent time with Wilson on more than one occasion.  He and I went drinking in San Diego before a Holiday Bowl, and he totally cockblocked me with the beautiful bartender.  I'm not kidding.  What a cool cat.  I hope he's OK.  He always drove to Cali in an old Ford Pickup that looked like it had seen better days.

He burned my foam finger with a black and mild when I was about 10 or so. And he offered me a beer and a black and mild when I was about 18. HookEm Wilson.

I have told some of the stories in various UT Baseball threads and some included Scott, such as the picture I posted of several of us with a hog head before a game with Arkansas in Omaha. I

"Send the Hogs home!! Send the Hogs home!!"

I was in that line that marched into Rosenblatt behind the pig's head on a spike. Good times. I thought that the head had wound up on top of the bat rack in the Texas dugout.

Any updates?

from Sissy:

Good morning, Sis here.
Scott Wilson is still in CICU in NE Florida’s #1 trauma unit. He has a team as big as Texas checking and working with him. He is still sedated and intubated and running fever. Folks are asking about his return to Austin. There is no timetable at all for that.
Today’s nurse suggested “stubborn old man” as part of his reactions and behavior even sedated. I’m sure many of you would agree with her. I am truly grateful for each and every one of you who have reached out in love.

Sissy is Scott's sister.

Fever means infection, right? Fuck.

Having a kid who went to work this summer as a nurse in a CVICU after graduating UT and hearing some of her stories could mean that.  Could also be a lot of other things related to inflammatory responses post surgery, reactions to meds, etc etc.

Statesman article on Scott:

Texas Longhorns superfan Scott Wilson hospitalized while traveling for Texas-Florida game

A legendary Texas Longhorns fan who has followed the team around the country, literally, missed his first UT football game in decades because of a health scare last week.

Scott Wilson, one of the most loyal Texas football and baseball supporters to don the burnt orange, remains hospitalized after suffering a medical emergency at the Jacksonville, Fla., airport. Bob Ballou, the sports director of CBS Austin, posted on social media last Friday that Wilson was on his way to Florida.

"Scott was on our flight to Jacksonville yesterday - where they celebrated his celebrity status right before takeoff," the Friday post read. "It was a really cool moment. He had a medical incident when we got to baggage claim and thank the Good Lord for the quick reaction from medical personnel. They performed CPR as they rushed him out of the airport and that likely saved his life."

A Facebook post from a Scott Wilson account asked for prayers and said he was taken to a Florida medical facility where he remained this week. Wilson was “sedated and intubated” as of Monday, according to a post apparently penned by his sister, Nancy.

Scott Wilson is perhaps the most dedicated UT fan you'll ever come across. He lives in a modest northeast Austin home that is filled from wall to ceiling with loads of Texas' memorabilia as well as other sports he favors too.

“Good morning, Sis here," the post reads. "... (Scott) has a team as big as Texas checking and working with him. Folks are asking about his return to Austin. There is no timetable at all for that. I appreciate your prayers of healing for him and prayers of gratitude for his medical team.”

Wilson, a longtime Texas football fan, had planned to attend the Longhorns' SEC matchup against Florida, which they lost 29-21. The ESPN broadcast team Saturday gave a shoutout to Wilson in the second half of the game.

"We want to send our best to Scott Wilson," play-by-play announcer Bob Wischusen said. "... He is a Texas superfan. He is known for his incredible attendance, I mean since the days of Earl Campbell."

Wilson is also an avid follower of the Texas baseball team. Now in his 60s, the former attorney earlier this year reached the milestone of attending 1,500 consecutive Longhorn baseball games at home, on the road and in the postseason.

The Texas Ex (Class of 1972) even has his own seat engraved at UFCU Disch-Falk Field, the Longhorns' baseball stadium. The American-Statesman in 2016 visited his Austin home, where he showed off his impressive Texas memorabilia collection that includes hundreds of hats.

"I've missed three (baseball) games since '81, I think," Wilson said in an April interview with D1Baseball reporter Jack DeLongchamps. "And I hadn't missed any since April 2000. ... The kids, they know me. They all know me."

Wilson has traveled to dozens of states to watch Texas compete, and even win national titles, in football, baseball, golf, volleyball and track and field, according to a 2016 Statesman story.

The ESPN broadcast Saturday said he'd been to over 500 consecutive Texas football games. In 2016, that streak was at 473 games, per Statesman archives. He told D1Baseball this spring that the last time he missed a football game, home or away, was 1977.

"Scott Wilson, from all of us... get well soon," Wischusen said.God speed Scott.
