LG, C and RT are bottom quartile in FBS and have been dogshit against both Group of 5 and Power 5 opp.  OU’s DL is elite with multiple NFL players who will destroy that LG/C gap.  The matchup is awful.

OU’s OL and RBs are relatively pedestrian. Our DL held up fine against in Columbus and should be able to compete in Dallas. If they don’t, 5-7 is realistic.

The DT recruiting is another example of Sark’s mismanagement.  They bought lots of the available portal talent but they clearly weren’t up to the task in Gainesville.

I rewatched the first half. You guys are vastly overstating the issues on the OL. A lot of it looks like it's scheme confusion and missed assignments. When the line is doing simple shit and crashing or getting push it's fine, there is no point of attack here and their gap spacing is so fucked up they are letting dudes slip in virtually unblocked. Its not like Florida was just shedding blocks at will or getting massive penetration when engaged. They were coming in mostly untouched because the OL or blocking assignment wasn't clear. To me it looks like a non-veteran center and a line that hasn't gotten on the same page with eachother on how to give up assignments or hand them off either vocally or with hand signals etc. They are out there playing exactly the play that's called instead of working together as a unit.

You are all vastly understating the problems with the IDL, the interior Defensive line at Florida was possibly the worst I can remember watching any Texas football team, ever. Its fucking atrocious. Absolutely no push, no disruption, these guys are being put where the OL wants them to be put and are making 0 issues for Florida in the backfield or otherwise. They are fully engaged and stood up in blocks, most of the time they aren't even trying to shed or use the block to clog a lane they are just in a 1 on 1 with the guy in front of them not paying attention to anything that's going on with the play.

The EDGE play was okay, but a lot of the IDL just sucking shit makes it a lot easier for them to just seal that off. There is also a lot of designed patience or zone built in to the scheme that changed later and was significantly more effective.

Wisner needs to understand the difference in hard nosed running and the finesse long break game. Not every run is supposed to break, sometimes you just gotta run with both arms on the ball and push the fucking pile. I saw a lot of times where he's looking for something that isn't gonna develop and instead of hitting the fucking hole that hesitation is turning into a no gain short gain when someone sheds a block and makes contact with no momentum.

The problems I'm seeing are mental, except the IDL, those guys are JAG as fuck I cannot believe they didn't go harder in the portal and WTF is this coach teaching / doing

They got a former rotational player from Ohio State, an effective NT from Purdue, freshman AA, a former 5 star who was on the upswing, and Lavon Johnson. Alex January was also on the upswing. Obviously heavy investment in recruiting as well. Swung out on Lee Hunter.

The inputs are greater than the current output. They also likely spent much of the offseason abusing this IOL, so they didn't realize they weren't going hard enough for average P4 OLs.

Appreciate the positivity (IDL comments aside) and I choose to believe what you’re putting down because I want to have hope.

I would just add that numerous times on tape a UF defender would line up over someone and he would be untouched by that OL. That needs to change and should be a simple fix. Hit the damn guy across from you no matter if your assignment is to protect a different gap than the one that DL is trying to attack. Hit him then slide.

I did not see the OL completely whiffing on blocks as a half glass full moment.

Some of the EDGE issues was the odd decision to use containment rushes vs a hobbled QB, like they were practicing for Mateer. Though Moore getting locked up by TE  1 on 1 should not happen under any circumstance.

I think asking Wisner to bury his head and get 1-2 yards is just asking him to do something he isnt suited for. I will say was to leave your 2 most physical RBs on the bench vs Florida. Perhaps that was about blocking, but RBs did not block particularly well. Though hard to really say Gibson and Simon did not get a chance, when RBs got 9 attempts on the game. Sark panicked on that.

I wonder how much of that is a function of the terrible “containment” strategy we seemed to have last Saturday where the line seemed preoccupied with standing up and looking for the QB to run, rather than shooting gaps and trying to penetrate with quickness. Maybe this bunch is better suited to the latter, although I had thought Cole Brevard was better at the point of attack than this.

I do think its possible we played like shit in multiple spots against UF. Its a really really hard place to play, and I dont think its an overstatement to say playing against a Manning gets their blood going. It was rocking. I didnt go but my buddy told me it was as intimidating as anywhere hes been. Sometimes you fly halfway across the country and get buzzsawed.

Of course I believe there are multiple units that have season long deficiencies, especially on the left interior of the o line. I also agree its looking like we might not get the production we paid for on the interior d line. However I believe with this line, Vegas is telling us:

1. They dont think we will play as bad in the RRS as we did in the swamp.

2. OU has plenty of flaws across the roster.

3. We still have plenty of athletes, especially on defense.

I'm all for shitting on this staff, but who were the better IDL options in the portal, other than Lee Hunter? When you're filling up that position group with 5-6 guys from the portal, you're bound to get some JAGs. I think the bigger failure is that January is the only playable homegrown player on the roster. That is insane.

There is a good argument that Florida gameplans were among the worst this staff has put together. Maybe the hope is the staff overlooked Florida and we will see a different Texas vs OU.

I went there for the 1995 Tennessee game with Peyton. Loudest place I’ve ever been. The bottom half is sunk into the earth so it really holds the noise.

It was pretty shockingly bad across the board. Game plan, coaching, effort, execution, leadership. I bet its not the last time we see all of these things this year, the question is will we see it this week. Would be a massive indictment of the staff if we do.

It is an indictment on coaching, not the coaches personnel choices. These guys straight up don't know how to play IDL and are nowhere near being good enough to be playing IDL at Texas. They suck. They are being physically dominated. This isn't mental stuff like the OL, this is unfixable shit that we are just going to have to pray that the ILB can bridge while we give up a soft middle. It would have been so much worse had our linebacking corps and secondary not been so fucking good.

I think the half full comes from these guys aren't pussies or just losers who are getting blown up. They are playing like shit, full stop. It's a lot harder to fix being put on your ass or defenders just shedding you at will than it is to fix who to block and when in a protection scheme. You can simplify schemes and do the hit man in front of you and be pretty dang effective. You can't do that if your OL is soft as Charmin and getting pushed back 5 yards like they aren't there and that's not what's happening.

We also scored from the 1. OL got push, it was better than last season.

That last line is where I've been.

This isn't the players. It's coaching a significant amount of talent to get consistent results, or it's recognizing if perhaps a lack of talent exists, how it can be schemed around and not completely screw up the entire season. Which may already be too late at this point.

Sark stubbornly repeats failures. The deep pass for example. Quinn couldn't hit it for shit, yet it happened every damn game over and over. Arch actually can hit it, but the running game and OL is so bad it doesn't matter. Or Arch locks up.

All of that is coaching. And Sark for all the great he's done here is revealing more and more he's not a particularly great coach and doesn't get the best out of players.

Or his coordinators don't and he's not organizationally recognizing it and repairing it. It falls on Sark. PK is clearly great, Florida notwithstanding. Everyone else on the staff? Not much evidence to support it.

Sark's inflection point is now, or already underway. The 2-8 vs Top 10 opponents out front should also have told you.

The OU "In the weeds" guys did some tape breakdown of how teams are scheming three-one sets or motioning TEs to take Anthony Hill out of the box so that they deal with less linebackers and only the IDL guys. By doing so teams are making sure the ILB is the focus of the blocking to make sure he cannot bridge the gap. I need to stop watching these breakdowns because it just makes everything we are seeing in real-time even more frustrating because we are being out coached on top just our play.

Perspectives.   I’m not sure OU is THAT much better on D compared to Florida.   OU has played dogshit to date which includes a Michigan team that is average (maybe a carbon copy of us) to a TD margin of victory and an Auburn team which is likely to finish below us with an offense that makes ours look awesome.

A healthy Florida defense is far better than our offense.  By a bunch.

you should watch this, because Scip is talking about the protection scheme issue that you are talking about and the individual breakdowns on blocking. His conclusion is the schemes and individual OL are both faulty.

I'm going to assume our OL looks like dogshit against OU, just like we did against Florida. But I also know that the OU OL will look nothing like Florida's OL and will look more like ours. Therefore, we have two dogshit OLs going against pretty stout defenses. The game will come down to who wants it more and changes in momentum due to mistakes. Both teams have a real chance of taking this game or giving it away. Should be a game that's fun and full of anxiety to watch. But there's no doubt that Fuck OU is in my heart, and I hope we stomp them and obliterate their ass because that always brings joy.

I suppose we could catch them for a couple of big plays down the field, but my expectations on the positive side for this game look a lot like the games in 1990 and 1991, where we eked out 14-13 and 10-7 wins.

Friday

Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer was upgraded to “probable” last night. That decreases the chances of a Longhorn victory IMO.

But it simultaneously increases the odds that the Longhorns are going to be pushed to fight as hard as they can on every play. That they’ll play with an unbridled passion and focus.

Unfortunately, we haven’t seen a level of consistent focus and passion this year.

Maybe this game, maybe Mateer, shakes the cobwebs loose.

**

I hope folks realize the indictment of what I wrote above really is.

Right now, this team is not playing well on a number of levels. The offensive line looks lost against pressure. The interior defensive line is not getting much of a push in the pass rush. And the offense seems to lack the punch it had a year ago.

**

The bottom line:

We need to see something different in the Cotton Bowl tomorrow. If that game doesn’t get you amped up and focused as a team, then you may not have a pulse this season.

**

Despite Mateer, I’m still picking the Horns.

I have faith that the Texas defense will come to play, and Sark and Manning will find a soft spot - at least enough of one - somewhere in that OU defense.

Hook’Em!

**

(Added from Thursday Night)

No change for the Texas Longhorns on their Thursday evening availability report.

CB Malik Muhammad and WR Parker Livingstone remain PROBABLE.

RB CJ Baxter remains DOUBTFUL.

Arch is probably third on the list of issues on this offense behind the OL sieve and the JAG corps at RB but he’s still an issue.

i've grown to love your takes from our years together in the 'other' football (soccer) forum

i rarely diverge from your opinion on anything

that said i don't think we have any idea about the jag-rating of the RBs or the WRs because of the o-line

and i liked what i saw from arch last week - if he had anything more advanced than empty air protecting his left side, his accuracy, decisions and speed of thought would improve with every game

likewise the RBs - how can we say they are jaggy when sark sends them in to a collapsing trench on 1st down every series and the defense knows exactly what's coming
