This is very much along the lines that I've been thinking.

Spoiler

I would also add that because of the limitations of interstellar communications, they won’t know if there’s any problems until they show up in the solar system. They can’t risk showing up to a hostile species, so it has to be hardcoded that they do not kill or harm.  I think that’s why the human hive mind considers those 12 to be broken, well that and the fact that they can’t join the hive mind

All interesting theories but in an interview the lead actress said that no matter what you think, the story isn’t what you think it is. So we’ll see.

It does seem like almost a billion deaths is a lot. Could there really have been that many people who were in precarious situations when it all happened? How long were the people incapacitated, like five minutes? That wouldn’t have crashed all the airplanes and not every car accident would have been fatal.

The other allegory that I was thinking about is that this is what the world would be like when AI is everywhere. Just a bunch of sycophants trying to make you happy all the time.

The elderly freezing up and falling over, that's going to be some.  Car crashes, airplane crashes, maybe somebody eating something chokes. Maybe the militaries of the world dropping a bunch of stuff trying to stop it at the last minute (that could certainly ratchet things up).

But yeah, that doesn't quite feel like almost a billion deaths. However, it could be that a bunch could not handle it and it killed them. Maybe that was by design, to eliminate those who couldn't handle the assimilation.

Watched episode 2 tonight.  That was fun.  It had a lot of the Will Forte show Last Man on Earth energy.

Spoiler

I hope the twist is that there are no aliens coming other than the virus itself.  Once it takes over the dominant life form on the planet it commandeers resources to beam its genetic code to the next planet of suckers, thus spreading across the galaxy.

Or, closely related, the virus is a tool of a very advanced civilization to contain potential threats before their technology advances to the point they can exit their solar system.  Kind of cribbing off of Three Body Problem and Foundation ideas.

Either way Carol is kind of screwed.

Watched the first 2 episodes and I like it so far. The premise reminds me a little bit of The Leftovers in the sense that an extreme supernatural event happens to the entire world in a short time period, and now we have to see how the survivors react.

I like how feisty Carol is. She isn't settling for anyone's bullshit and it created some interesting conversations with the group of other anomalous humans.

No idea where this goes, but I'd like to eventually see a scenario where they discover a way of converting some people back to normal.

Feisty makes sense but she’s kind of an asshole. She doesn’t seem to understand that for a huge portion of the global population, this new world would be a vast improvement.

She also doesn’t seem to have a single friend or loved one in her life besides her dead girlfriend. If this happened and everyone you ever knew (minus 1/8th of the world) was telling you it was awesome you’d be curious.

While I’m sure Diabete is having fun banging out models on Air Force One, he must understand his mother is part of the hive mind. He was at the lunch in Bilbao. He heard Carol’s point about the shared consciousness.

Ick dude.

Instantly know how to fly an F-18 with the caveat being having to know every single passing thought that ever bounced around in your guys' minds.

Or even worse, your parents’ minds.

I would get over all of that pretty fucking fast.

"I swear to you, I will fight all of you until my last dying breath."

"We've got Sydney Sweeney on the next flight to Austin, Red Five. She is very eager to please you."

"Perhaps I was too harsh...."

Are the hive individuals going to procreate?

because this is also a good way to sunset humans over a period of around a hundred years.
