It's the same now as it always has been: You watch and hope that ou, aggy, and ND get boat-raced. I mean, they get their shit pushed in in supremely embarrassing fashion on national TV. I don't ever want to see any one of those cocksuckers ever win another game. Ever

How do you do that when Aggy and OU are playing each other, you failed to explain that scenario.

That was the question.

As much as I like watching the early OOC marquee games, Texas needs to eliminate them going forward.  With the SEC going to a 9 game conference schedule, there is too much downside and not enough upside to making one of your OOC a 50/50 game.  With 9 conference games in the SEC, coming out the other side with 1-2 losses is going to be tough and will almost always be enough to get a Texas in the CFP regardless of OOC quality.  There will be situations where a big marquee OOC win could be a different maker to make the CFP, but I think it's much more likely a loss OOC keeps you out like this year.

For all the simpletons saying the Florida game kept us out rather than the OSU game, that's a dumb take IMO.  All 3 of our losses kept us out.  We are 100% in the CFP with a win in any of those games.  The difference is that we had to play Florida and GA this year while OSU was our choice.  It's easy to say "just beat a bad Florida team", but this is college football and those kind of losses aren't going away and even the best teams often drop silly games (particularly against dangerous and talented "bad" teams which make up half of the SEC).

Again, there is a lot to hate about dropping the early OOC marquee match ups.  But it's just not worth it when the current system values the W/L record so highly.  I'd rather increase the odds of watching multiple CFP marquee match ups at the end of the season vs. 1 marquee match up early in the season.

One possible solution that would encourage more early marquee games - make the first 2 games of the year meaningless pre season bowl games that must be OOC.  You play whoever you want or maybe they formally move bowls to the beginning of the year and the bowls pick.  Bragging rights still on the line, but those games don't count toward your record that is evaluated for post season play.  Those games would certainly get a lot more viewership than the current post season bowl games with everyone sitting out and nobody cares about watching anything outside the playoffs.  After the 2 preseason "bowls", every game after that must be either conference opponent or P4 OOC (sorry G5).  Those 10 games (or 11 if CCG still exists) would be used to determine who gets in the CFP.  It would be more like most of the other sports where early season results aren't that important and they use that time to schedule the hardest opponents possible to figure out where the team is and make adjustments before conference play starts.

My money is on JFF to whip Pavia’s ass, but then for Pavia’s family to come out of the stands and jump JFF. When they are finally done beating his ass, Michael Sam will come sack him.

Only two that should play this mythical 13th game are Miami and Notre Dame. There is no guarantee for Notre Dame that a side by side Miami would not get put ahead of them and Miami has nothing to lose.

Lots of people in this thread making lots of assumptions about the future of the CFP. Aligned to those assumptions, they are also making a lot of calls on what Texas should do regarding future scheduling.

Every year since the CFP has begun, the next year has been extremely different. Assuming that suddenly all aspects are going to remain static moving forward is frankly just naive.

Right now eyeball test and w/l column plus bias towards helmetology and the committee members own motivations.

Its fucked and ND over Miami and Texas being out despite having head to head vs 2 teams IN screams for masssive changes. Even better, the current system is going to punish the itself for bullshit like G5 team admission, not valuing head to head and other nonsense.

Declaring what a university should do about future scheduling with zero clue or insight other than guaranteed change forthcoming is... certainly a take.

This. My kids would ask me what happened to a player after he graduated from Texas and I'd tell them he'd been sent to live on a big farm in the country where he could run around outside all day long and do fun football-things.

This is a big problem.  Right now 2 of the committee members are the AD of Nebraska and the AD of Arkansas....I'm sure they just set everything aside when it comes to Texas.

Edit and another one if a FORMER AD for Arkansas and another one is a FORMER Nebraska coach.

Jesus how do those two shit ass programs have that much clout in this thing.

💯

Its a massive issue. So is zero structure on what they are REQUIRED to prioritize.

Head to head is not among the priorities. What kind of shit ball game is it when the most important stat, Score mother fucking board is basically ignored for whatever the fuck they chose. Which... we dont even officially know as they don't even have to say HOW or WHY the came up with what.

One change I can see is that all conference champs have to be in the top 25 for the AQ and if a champ ends up unraked (i.e., if Duke were to win), it opens up another at-large spot (which would likely be Miami ironically depsite losing the ACC 2nd place tiebreaker).

I'm riffing some from Klatt and some myself.

1) Fuck G5, they dont belong in a 8, 12 or 16 playoff against the P4 fuck em.

2) Go to a play in weekend rather than a committee selection. See the Klatt link for details around min 32

3) If 2 is out create a clear and specific criteria that the committee must prioritize in the selection process.

4) Make the committee validate their process against #3. Show your fucking work.

5) Form a committee that isn't directly tied to specific universities with biases and agendas. Get some MIT and Rice nerds who give zero shits about football or rivalries and form a mathematical, debate committee. Yes eyeball test is out with this approach, math is in. Eyeball test is extremely subjective so fuck it.

Klatt breaks it down pretty well and that in his version of a playoff that Miami and Texas would be in.

He talks of how to fix this current terrible playoff system.

Bruce Feldman was on cc show and basically said Texas needs to shut up and they are not deserving of the playoff because check notes…
they lost to Florida who is the worse team in all of college football

they played some games that were close with very bad teams lmao

and they aren’t good this year and next year is the year they’ll be good.

whether he is right or wrong I’m assuming that’s how the committee thinks. My problem is, are we the only ones getting held to this standard wtf?  Do they even watch any other games? he should just say they lost 3 games and call it a day but he layed it off that we suck.

Florida played 5 playoff contenders and was within a possession with every single one of them going into the 4thQ. I feel like the “4-8 Florida” thing requires some context. They have elite players at premium positions that would start for a lot of these fraud playoff squads.

It was crazy to hear because that about wraps it up for any miracle for Texas to get in. We pretty much need chaos and uproar from the media to have a chance.

And no I bet most of the clowns  on the committee didn't watch every game from start to finish.    How did the Arkansas AD do all this at the same time finalizing a coaching search?

Hell nah. I’m pretty sure when the committee is saying we have the worst loss of any team in playoff discussion at Florida , and that is holding us out. Alabama with 3 losses will actually have the worst loss, if they lose to Georgia. Let’s see if they bring that up like they do Texas.

It matters when that third loss happens, if it does.

Alabama through 12 games: two losses

Texas through 12 games: three losses

Florida had a legit shot at beating UGA but the SEC Refs came in as usual and helped save the day for UGA.

That’s what is irritating about the whole deal. Why is anyone saying in the media or committee about how and who we played whether we won or lost. Just say it’s the 3 losses and that’s it. They’re saying it’s about losing to Florida and playing close games. It’s stupid because what if we lost to ou instead of Florida would that have been better.

Riffing (borrowing your term) off of your #4, and taking into consideration the ACC's experiment with allowing viewers to listen in on the on-field ref's conversations with the replay officials, how about televising the CFP Committee's deliberations? Let's let everybody hear the reasoning and the debate. I realize, of course that that can't happen for obvious reasons (not the least of which is the time said deliberations take), but wouldn't it be kind of nice to listen in, to see the sausage being made, as it were?

I’m not surprised at all and fully expect to be out. It’s pissing me off that Texas is getting drug through the mud as if we’re the only ones playing close games and we suck balls. Eyeball tests and close games/scored truly matter, except when they don't, apparently.

I was confident Texas was out a long time ago. That said, my main issue is the extreme inconsistencies.

Sometimes it's eyeball test, sometimes head to head, sometimes win/loss, never apparently SOS, or losing a head coach. It's mind numbingly subjective and clear that biases and personal motivations play a much bigger part than any metric.

Tell me something I did not know, maybe I should have said it as follows:

Based on the bullshit from the committee ND should not take the risk of Miami jumping them and Miami should assure themselves of a spot by beating ND again. It is the only way that a 13th game would benefit anyone by taking it out of the committees hands.

P.S. Even us if there is a major injury to the winning team😉

I have hardly heard one peep about Bama's LOSS to OU who Texas beat by 3 scores.

And the idiot Chair of the committee made Bama's win on Saturday looked like a signature win against Auburn when Bama got out of their  just as lucky as we did with our games against UK and MSU.

When Bama is sitting with three loses on Saturday and it the loss to UGA is ugly, the H2H against OU SHOULD be an issue and they need to totally relook at their crap effort against Auburn.

And we need not forget Bama had to comeback and beat a shitty South Carolina too 29-22 and and held on for a close one against Mizzou who fizzled as the season went on.

Yea, Bama is getting special treatment this year because the media narrative is they got screwed last year.  Committee is making it up to them.

Per NCAA rules a 13th game can be played in Hawaii or Alaska (source below). Hawaii should host a 3 game showcase slate every conference championship weekend and charge $1 million/team. To make this feasible the committee should move their penultimate rankings to Sunday to give these teams a chance to actually prepare for a game.

This years slate could be.

#12 Miami vs #13 Texas

#14 Vandy vs #15 Utah

#16 USC vs #18 Arizona

Spoiler

FBS teams can play a maximum of 12 regular-season games each year, per Bylaw 17.12.6.1. However, Bylaw 17.12.6.2.1 (f) permits any football games played in Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico to not count against the maximum number of contests.

Have you ever heard of BYU? They play in a “P4”  conference and won 11 games and they aren’t in the playoff.

If Texas played their schedule and had the same results, Texas would be Top5 right now.
