What a strange town.   Lots of multi-story apartments in such a small area.

Eastern Europe. Saw that shit across the balkans. Farmers and factory workers have to live somewhere. Centralize it and keep infrastructure costs down.

@956 Worldwide  Ever read Imperium by Kapuchinski? I think you would like it. @atomheartbevo you as well.

Spoke with a Bosnian buddy who now works for DOS. Fucker hates the Russians more than he hates the Serbs. Same doctrine, all that shit. Predicts Ukraine wins. He line that had me laughing was we beat Serbian Armor with Uzi's. And NATO was not with us. We only had the UN.

Anyways, a good read by a polish author.

I haven’t, have read some of his other stuff though. It sucks to be at a place where I realize I’ll never catch up on my reading.

He’s distancing himself and Ukraine more from Russia and the USSR/Russian WWII narrative. The second surrender ceremony in Berlin took place on the 8th, but it was already the 9th in Moscow. So the Soviets made 9 May Victory Day and made all the Pact nations celebrate 9 May, too.

Very healthy to put the Russian 9 May cult in the past and mark VE Day instead.

Yeah, I picked up on that. Move towards EU/Allies and meanwhile remembers the Ukraine provided a lot of first line forces for the USSR. Well done.

I think he is speaking more to Eastern Europe than the west. Notice the use of the We clause.

This was the Soviet model of development. Remember that even farms in the Soviet Union were collectivized, there was no need to stay on “your” plot of land. Soviet city planning preferred space for leisure and activity to be public, not private, allegedly to foster a sense of solidarity and community. They had to allow a small nod to individual space in the form of the dacha— a small cottage with no electricity or water and a plot for a garden. This was mostly to relieve pressure on a planned economy that could not provide enough food via the kolkhoz system. These buildings are khrushchevki or brezhnevki, pre-fab concrete panel blocks of apartments built to respond to union wide housing shortages and a drive to remake cities and villages along a more modern “Soviet” model of big grid avenues, neighbourhood parks, all connected by rail and highway. Eastern European towns occupy a much smaller footprint than American towns of a similar size. But they feel more inhuman than similar size Central or Western European towns with private homes ringing public squares with churches and few lower-rise apartments for town dwellers. The Commies erected similar eyesores outside town centers around the former Pact in a drive to create “new” towns allegedly superior to the old ones.

And, this method of village and town planning is indicative of the ways Russian imperialism imposed itself on Ukrainian’s physical space. Russia, pre-Revolution, had a real tradition of non-state collective farming among free peasants, a reaction to the tougher growing conditions and more hostile environment.  This was foreign to Ukraine, where free peasants almost always had their own land to work.

Thanks for the reply.   I was used to seeing this in larger cities in eastern Europe, especially those who suffered significant damage in WWII.   Didn't occur to me that the Soviets did it EVERYWHERE.

Yep, including Central Asia where they REALLY are out of place. It’s a defining feature of the post-Soviet space.

And although it’s shorthand to call these blocks “Stalinist,” they came later. Stalinist architecture gave much more of a nod to a (type of) aesthetic and Stalinky are better built and more comfortable to boot. Stalinist apartments are in great demand. Krushschev slammed them as “excessive”.

Man, if I could get one with the big corner windows pouring in light, no telling how much Socialist Realism art I could crank out. Would just have to get the damn ballerinas to quit jumping around.

I guess this can go here, watch until the end.

explanation in one of the first few comments

Quote

The reporter was talking about the celbrations, a drunk VDV (airborne forces) stepped into the frame and started yelling “MY COUNTRY CYKA BLYAT (doesn’t need translation) WE WILL CONQUER UKRAINE BLYAT…”, the reporter asked him not to interrupt and got punched in the face because “HOW DARE YOU TALK TO ME LIKE THAT?” Funnily enough, even on propagandist Russian state TV the report was titled “The spill of the blue” where “blue” is a common term to refer to alcohol/alcoholism. Important context: it’s very common in Russia for VDV veterans to get absolutely shitfaced and swim in a public fountain on the VDV day (you can even see it in the clip). Here’s a longer [clip](https://youtu.be/IHYiy7B71H4).

Re: 25m troops.

Up to 34 million soldiers served in the Red Army during World War II, 8 million of which were non-Slavic minorities. Officially, the Red Army lost 6,329,600 killed in action (KIA), 555,400 deaths by disease and 4,559,000 missing in action (MIA) (mostly captured).

Three Day Special Military Operation only needs to be the size of WWII for them to meet their goals.

I lived in one in Ostrava, CZ. It was part of Nova hut which was a large steel factory that employed roughly 60,000. I was in a penthouse of an all white cement hug apartment complex near the factory. The complex served meals in a cafeteria. They had management that wouldn't allow people to stay over. I had a girlfriend who would get me in trouble but I think they were a little more lenient because I was American and it was too hard for them to argue with me.  The penthouse was nice enough but I have a feeling that the other apartments weren't too great. The management seemed to be unfriendly towards me because I was in the nice section.

Housing I was talking about upthread. I think they have been converted from worker housing to a hotel but my Czech is special needs.

These are called panelaki (panel buildings) in Czech and Slovak. Same principle, a bit better made. Same idea of the housing estate.

This goes back to even (at least) Roman times. One big reason that the Legions rolled over not just barbarians, but more sophisticated foes, was that every night they bedded down in a familiar, orderly, temporarily fortified camp where they ate and went to sleep while their opponents shivered in the cold.  Roman generals factored in the time and supplies to build a camp when campaigning.

Plus, when the Romans fucked up, as even Caesar sometimes did, they usually managed to jump back into the fortified camp to sort things out for another day, instead of getting chased through the fields for 20 miles getting pig-stuck by the opposing cavalry, which was the fate of those who broke.

From my Estonian buddy on another forum, it seems Russia is quite dedicated to their propaganda game.  They cleared out trees, leveled the ground, built a stage, and will blast their Victory Day concert across the river.

Quote

A square has been built on the Russian side of the Narva River for the purpose of organizing a concert tomorrow, May 9. The Russian-language Delfi has already reported that the Ivangorod city government plans to organize a concert and show it on a big screen so that Narva residents can see it.

Left side of river is EU & NATO (Estonia), right side is Russia.

Translation:

Spoiler

A square has been built on the Russian side of the Narva River for the purpose of organizing a concert tomorrow, May 9. The Russian-language Delfi has already reported that the Ivangorod city government plans to organize a concert and show it on a big screen so that Narva residents can see it.
Kalmer Janno, a representative of the Narva police, answered a few days ago the question whether the police are going to do something if there is a concert like this with a big screen and loud sound, because nothing is being built on the river bank near the Ivangorod fortress. But now the trees have been taken down and the square leveled, and the metal structure for the big stage has also been erected. The police have not yet responded.

In Ivangorod, patriotic concerts have also been organized on the river bank on May 9. For example, last year, people stood on Narva promenade with flowers and listened to war songs. Such interest was probably caused by the fact that public events are prohibited in Estonia on May 9.

This year, the people of Narva are actively commenting on the news about the concert in various groups on social media and on their pages, who post photos from the Ivangorod side of the river. Some joke that all Narva residents who go to Ivangorod will be recorded with a camera and they will lose their residence permit, some express regret that Ivangorod wastes money on such a play, instead of improving the lives of the townspeople, some recall Russia's previous propaganda achievements, some claim that the promenade will be closed , that there would be no audience at the concert. It is generally seen as trolling by the neighboring country, while others are waiting with interest to see what will actually happen at the Friendship Bridge on May 9. There are also those who support Russia's idea of celebrating the holiday on such a large scale.

In any case, the police act within the framework of the law. If concert-goers create a chaotic gathering with speeches supporting an aggressive regime, they will be detained. Unless something illegal is being done, the police are not going to get involved.
