Русский корабль - иди нахуй

Of course that assumes that they actually succeed in taking Sievierodonetsk - if not then they will be in the second scenario regardless.

I think your scenario #2 is it.  Russians are succeeding by really concentrating a lot of their troops on small areas, but concentrating a bunch of troops in one area frees up other areas for Ukraine's taking (which appears to be happening).  And because Ukraine is pressing in other areas, even if Russia takes Sievierodonetsk, they are now vulnerable in other areas that they would need to hold to sue for peace.

And it feels like Ukrainian forces have, in some areas, went pseudo-silent on their activities (fewer videos, etc.), which is making everybody wonder if they are putting in additional OPSEC as they mass/move forces around.  When they were on the defensive, they could put out videos like nobody's business, not caring if the OSINT people were geolocating everything within hours, if not minutes, because the Russians clearly couldn't benefit much from the geolocation data.

I can't put my finger on it, and videos and photos are still coming out, but it just seems like things have slightly tapered off here and there on the social media front.

I am past the point of attributing clever strategery to Putin.  He may have some, but it will be in fits and starts, and being deluded and stupid is an equal -- if not greater -- likelihood.

Putin really aggyed things up by letting his people go out there on the state media TV shows and talk about how after Ukraine, they need to deal with Moldova, Georgia, and need to address Romania/Poland/Baltics/Sweden/Finland.

That was really fucking stupid because A) Russia can't even win their division in Ukraine, let alone win the conference in that part of Europe and B) It hardened NATO's resolve as outside of a few members like Hungary, everybody else realized that Putin was making it clear that he simply will not stop unless he loses in Ukraine.

It's extremely aggy-like to not even be close to winning in Ukraine while still shit-talking other countries and telling them that you are coming for them after you defeat Ukraine.  It's like aggy being up by a touchdown on Alabama in the first quarter, and saying that everybody should go ahead and start making aggy SECSECSEC conference championship t-shirts.

I assume there’s more populated areas at some distance that we don’t want to give them the ability to reach, so there’s no chance of an oopsy?

Yeah it's called "don't give them something that could hit Moscow from Ukraine".

Do you think anything has to do with the fact that there just isn't as much Russian equipment around to target?

If you look at the heat maps (which I tried to find but couldn't), in February there was heat everywhere.  Now it's mainly focused in the Donbas.  So you have a more limited front upon which to draw those vids.

OSINT people do some insane photo searches/recognition stuff.

Russians have no pride in multi-million dollar systems, they just fucking spray paint the Z shit on anywhere.  But it makes me wonder if they are doing it so blatantly on their aircraft, if there is a serious problem with Ukrainian aircraft in the area.

This is what they'd do vs the Germans, while successfully making it look as if they still had piles of troops in other areas they might have picked clean to use in the one offensive. The silly Krauts had been overly clever building that Secret Nazi Moonbase when all they really needed was some spy satellites.

Yeah, Ukraine has so many drones, plus information from NATO, etc., and I'd bet that is why they are willing to try and tie the Russians down to those pockets.

I've never looked much at the reporting from WWII, but I'm picturing Russians like this just looting the shit out of everything, even in Soviet territories.

Like fucking Oompa Loompas got tanks and went looting.

This is a fantastic way to continue keeping NATO/EU amped up against Russia.  I kinda of think the flow of weapons would increase even more than it already has been.  And EU/NATO nations may decide to start sending in military escorts, who would definitely wreck any attempted Russian kidnapping schemes.

🪖 Society, we decided to prepare a small illustration showing the artillery already handed over to us from Western partners and their characteristics.

💬 Sincere thanks to Western partners, and

Wonder why Putin has left Navalnyi alive, since he's in Russian custody.

Is it because he doesn't feel like he could pull off murdering him in prison, that it wouldn't go over with the Russian people?  That he would become a martyr?

Or is it because leaving Navalnyi alive gives Putin's opposition a single person to unify around, making it easier to for Putin to keep the opposition under surveillance (or makes it easier to round them up)?

I'm betting the Z's have a lot more to do with the fact that the Russians and Ukrainians are flying the same aircraft and getting misidentified by ground forces.  In other words, their own people are shooting at them.

Keep in mind, that during WWII, when we used P-47s as our primary ground attack aircraft, not only did we paint stripes on them, we painted not 1, but two oversized roundels on them to keep our boys from shooting down our planes.  And that was with a much slower plane with a unique silhouette.  How difficult must it be for both sides to determine whose plane of the same type is shooting at them?

Why the fuck did Navalnyi go back after he barely got out with his life? I get showing bravery and/or doing what you think is right, but damn, it would be great to have him on RFE and others blasting the message 24/7.

I'm sure it's been mentioned many times in this thread but if you haven't seen the documentary on HBO, go watch it.

If you watch the video, you can see how impossible it is to make out the Z on the tail.  Very likely that it once served a purpose as a unit marker along with Vs, boxes, etc. Its value now is wholly propagandistic. They painted the Zs on them airplanes for the video.

My guess is that Russia doesn’t give much of a shit what Westerners see on social media these days. Their propaganda on YouTube, Facebook, etc is mostly aimed at audiences in places like India, the ME, South America, etc.

And Africa. There is a full court, mostly successful propaganda war on there. Russia wants to starve Africa, and convince Africa it is Europe’s fault. And they also want a migrant wave to Europe.  Get the world spun up about the cruelty of Europeans to Black migrants and Europe spun up about how many are coming.  The migrant crisis of 2014-2015 was real, but it was also in large part prodded by Russia in Syria. And the dialogue about it in Europe was largely exploited and shaped by Kremlin-friendly propagandists. This is how you get more Orbans in place.

This.  Want to write the Great Big Book of Fucking Around and Finding Out?  That would be an opening line on par with "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times."  "It was the Fucking Around of times, and man, was it the fucking Finding Out of times."

Still rocking the iron sights.

Not rare. if sights are not centered, no matter what type, you are probably not hitting shit. saw a lot of this with security teams in Afghanistan. All the cool gear, little prep. I can hit pretty damn well over iron sights.
