Trump claiming we control Venezuela is like me or Brisket claiming we are dating Sela Ward.

Yeah, sure, there's a problem that she's still happily married, lives in New York and that we are legally obligated to remain at least 500 feet away from her and are required to report to authorities when we are going to be in the same city as she is, but other than that, yeah, Sela and I are dating while Brisket watches.

And hell, when Trump pardons Maduro, he's liable to end right back up there.

zero chance IMO.

As already stated and on record out on the internet, Maduro has been given a long leash of multiple exile and soft landing options and it's been the worst kept secret of an open negotiation (with Russia and China being involved in some aspects as well) for the last six months. This happened because of some combination of USA losing patience and Maduro mocking Trump and just sped up his permanent removal.

Investors and oil companies face difficult questions before rushing to profit from Venezuela’s vast hydrocarbon reserves. Those that do will need patience and considerable upfront capital.

Venezuela’s infrastructure is broken. It could take years to repair looted pipes, abandoned rigs and a mismanaged, corrupt industry, analysts say. Despite an estimated 300 billion barrels of proven oil reserves, Venezuela’s output has plummeted to about 900,000 barrels a day from about 3.5 million barrels a day in 1997. About one-third of it is pumped by Chevron.

You think?

Last night, Trump was still claiming that we are in charge, even though we don't have any boots on the ground, and the VP was sworn in by the VZ courts. That's not control.

This wasn't regime change; this wasn't even regime decapitation. This is a continuation of the Maduro regime.

And hell, when Trump pardons Maduro, he's liable to end right back up there.

There have been intel elements in Venezuela for a while that helped coordinate and make this such a clean operation. I think it’s safe to assume they are there and still active in steering things along.

I’m pretty confident that the VP will fall in line. She saw what landed her in this position. Any rhetoric to the contrary is for Venezuela’s domestic consumption.

Yeah that was a particularly hilarious take. And why stop at a cruise line. How about if another country performed missile strikes on American fishing boats. I'm sure we'd all be fine with that, right? Or how about a strike on a US warship in intl waters? I mean, it'd be all good 'because international waters', right?

JFC, the shit these people come up with.

I would not support conquering and taking either of those countries. Greenland isn’t happening because of NATO. Mexico has not been hostile to us or allying with our adversaries. I could see us pushing harder on Mexico about the cartels or perhaps hitting the cartels directly if things don’t progress the way we want. Whether I would support that would depend on how that’s carried out, and the events leading up to it.

The obvious ones that need to worry are Cuba and Colombia.

I’m glad critics have moved on from the “legality” of it to the wisdom of attempting a regime change, although the VP taking over makes this a bit different situation.

Insane take. That it would blow up NATO makes it more likely to happen, not less likely, as everyone in this White House hates NATO and wants to destroy it.

Seriously. It's a perfect shortcut to killing NATO dead. That gives 90% of this regime a huge boner, stroked by Putin as he works on his own boner.

And then the EU cuts some/all trade with us and our economy craters. The tariffs have already caused us problems as it is.

Trump is definitely trying to cause a lot of unnecessary drama with the Greenland shit, probably at Putin's nudging (he seems to be using Russian ships as a reason), but attacking a NATO member that we've been allied with for 80+ years, who was there with us in Afghanistan would be too far.

Look, there are already plenty on the right uncomfortable with the Venezuela stuff, because all of that vagueness that Rubio and Trump are spouting and how it was handled. Trump still can't come up with a coherent answer about how we are now "running" Venezuela as it is.

The foreign policy of the entire fucking United States at present boils down to this: whatever the most deranged, psychotic, unbalanced, narcissist piece of shit to have ever walked the earth wants at a particular instant in time. That's it. If he wants to hit Canada with a salvo of nukes after lunch today, he will, and nobody will lift a finger to stop him. And the scenario I suggested has a non-zero chance of happening. No matter how low that chance is....it's fucking madness that it's even true.

I bet it polls extremely well nationally with people on the right and the left because it was a tactical win that makes the military look badass. People like a badass military and don't give a shit about Venezuela or any other brown foreigners. Especially commie brown foreigners.

Long term strategy in Latin America isn't something that the average person cares about, hell they can't even point out Venezuela on the map.

Will the federal government dictate public companies take government money and spend it on a flyer? Seems like they did something like that before.

Giving banks money to loan to consumers is a bit different than forcing them to invest moneys on a high risk venture with a 5-10 year investment profile and 10-20 year payout period. BP's one well "Oops!!" cost them ~ $60 Billion; Are the feds going to backstop that possibility? Not to mention, similar assets have been nationalized before. Twice.

The bulk of TARP proceeds went to banks that bought other failing banks. I can see some producers playing ball with Trump given certain caveats. But it won’t reverse the condition of their oil fields in the near-term. In fact if I were Trump I would absolutely engage American companies with certain guarantees.

That is so ridiculous and literally cannot believed you typed it without a second thought. Every republican of note spent the weekend felating dear leader for his bravery and for ending the war on drugs and saving oil and gas and whatever else they put out there as the excuse to launch an illegal war. Seriously, just take a quick look. Even if some had reservations (i.e., Susan Collins "concern"), remeber that trans people still exist and where they take a piss is the defining issue of our time. It overrides everything else including illegal wars, kidnappings, pedophelia, the economy, etc., etc., etc. They could nuke LA and the electorate would be okay with it because at least the public schools aren't performing transition surgeries anymore after recess.

We live under a personalist regime that’s only interested in power and enrichment for the regime. Congress has rejected its war powers and power of the purse, but that’s not entirely accurate- GOP in Congress who refuse to uphold their Constitutional mandate are a major reason why there’s no consistent adherence to the rule of law

We are a country world that is now deeply entrenched in the attention economy:

Maduro’s arrest is connected to a new kind of politics I’ve spent the last year struggling to describe. A profoundly embarrassing collision of violent nationalism, illiterate social chatter, and memetic fascism that’s been spreading across the globe since the pandemic. We’ve seen hints for years now that the elites of the world are just as addicted to — and dependent on — the same social platforms that we are. Ignoring the near-constant public embarrassments of our shitposter ruling class that play out on platforms like X every day, our leaders are also digitally networking with each other behind closed doors. There’s Chatham House, the group chat that fried the minds of Silicon Valley’s most reactionary CEOs like Marc Andreessen, that’s been running since COVID started. Which is adjacent to the text message network of powerful men that convinced Elon Musk to buy Twitter in 2022. Last year, the Trump administration was caught planning out airstrikes in a Signal group. And days before the campaign in Venezuela, Republican operatives secretly teamed up with a far-right YouTuber to storm daycares in Minnesota. You take all of that and throw in last year’s Discord-based election in Nepal, the international white nationalist incel terror cells spreading across Telegram, and the fact Charlie Kirk’s killer allegedly carried out the attack for the members of his Discord channel and the picture couldn’t be clearer: Politics — and political violence — is now something performed, first and foremost, for an online audience. It almost doesn’t matter what happens irl if it makes noise online.

The other big winner of the Maduro arrest was Nike, who sold out of the tracksuit Ma duro was photographed wearing.

LOL, yeah, starting a new war without consulting Congress, kidnapping its leader, and doing it solely to take over it's petroleum reserves is a non-event. Is it now US policy to overthrow every bad leader or just the ones sitting on oil reserves? No, lol, and Trump has been exceedingly more active in 12 months than his last 48 combined. I was speaking of our innate ability to fuck up foreign policy regardless of continent. This could manifest in several ways. Nothing will happen to Maduro whatsoever. But for example, do we neglect leadership and let it devolve? Probably. Do we let any subsequent oil investment wither when they decide to nationalize again? Probably.

O'rly, then why is the President of the Unites States saying from a podium that we're gonna "run" Venezuala? Oh yeah, he said something different later, as did his other mouthpieces. We're all supposed to stop criticizing what he says because reasons. I have my doubts about that. It’s going to take years of investments to really increase output, and won’t pay off until after Trump is out of office, and there’s always a populist leader who will happily run on a premise of “they’re stealin’ our oil!” and then things are nationalized again.

And how many years of American troops guarding pipelines and facilities will we tolerate? I’m guessing up until the next administration takes office, or January 2027.

There is a reason Trump and Rubio were vague about plans after Maduro, and most likely because they thought they had deals cut with various people that maybe aren’t deals anymore.

We stop being a global superpower to a massive regional superpower with a ton of military resources wrapped up in the Americas, leaving the door open for China to try shit elsewhere, or at the least fill in the soft-power vacuum that we leave around the world.

It is not his style to care about Venezuela, so long as he is informed it’s running well. It should not deter whatever his China policy is. Russia is a lesser concern than China.
