Star Wars Episode IX

Red Five

I can't imagine any one at Disney being stupid enough to actually green-light a trilogy from Johnson into production and release.  Kennedy probably is that stupid, but someone higher up at Disney must have seen that the uproar in the fanbase after TLJ directly led to Solo "underperforming" at the box office.

Yup.  Disney was not anticipating the massive box office declines in both the sequel trilogy and anthology films.  Solo may have actually lost money which Disney never even contemplated as a possibility.  The ancillary income has been a disaster and the theme park attendance for the Star Wars lands has been underwhelming.  They simply can't fuck up the next trilogy.

TFA $2.068 billion

TLJ 1.333 billion

Rogue One $1.056 billion

Solo $392.9 million

Has it ever been stated whey they released Solo in May instead of December?  It seemed like the original plan was to release "Saga" films every two years and "anthology" films in the off-years - all in December, but then it inexplicably changed for Solo:

  • TFA: December 2015
  • Rogue One: December 2016
  • TLJ: December 2017
  • Solo: May 2018 (?)
  • TROS: December 2019

Rogue One was unquestionably a better film than Solo, but honestly ... Solo is a pretty fun little film.  It seems like it suffered from some TLJ hangover and maybe some Star Wars fatigue just by being released only 5 months after TLJ instead of one year.  I think it would have done much better had it been released in December 2018 on the "normal" schedule.

agree on the fatigue.  i don't know if it was that specific timing that was the cause, but i knew when it came out i couldn't stomach going to the theaters for it for whatever reason.

re: darth maul in solo.  maybe that was planted in there as a seed for having the emperor come back in TROS.  sorta like the rogue one did with hyperspace tracking.  pre-planting stuff to pretend like there is cohesiveness.

Fatigue is maybe a part of it combined with bitterness/disappointment over TLJ but I think Solo also suffered from being a story that really didn't need to be told. I thoroughly enjoyed it but I don't think most people needed or wanted to see how Han Solo became the character we see in the first Star Wars film. You release Solo as a Disney+ movie and I think people would've been more excited.

Solo was the first one I haven't seen in theaters, however, I really enjoyed it when I watched it on netflix.  I enjoyed TFA enough, and I really liked R1, and if they had released Solo in TLJ's spot, I probably would have gone to see it even though it didn't seem like it needed to be made.

A contrarian!  Rogue One is Episode 3.5.  Solo is peripheral.

Rogue One was an absolute snoozefest until the final act. Wooden performances by store mannequins Felicity Jones and Diego Luna. A total fucking waste of Forest Whitaker's time.

An awesome droid, a fantastic climactic battle and an appearance by Vader that was not part of Gareth Edwards original plan were the only redeeming qualities.

Solo was the superior movie.

Could be; but Darth Maul had already returned in the Star Wars canon way before Solo. He had an extensive story line in both Clone Wars and Rebels.  If you're a big SW fan, you owe it to yourself to watch Rebels.  It's absolutely fantastic.

Honestly neither story "needed" to be told, but I quite enjoyed both of them. I prefer Rogue One because of it's OT "feel."  And I totally disagree that it's a "snoozefest."  It's probably the SW film I enjoy the most on re-watch, after ESB.

Of course. We are in agreement on that. It should've been JJ the whole time just like it was Lucas the whole time but he handed off directing duties to others. Or have Kasdan write all three. The problem was Disney rushing the first one out and not taking their time to build the entire story. But let's be honest, Snoke was a taller Emperor clone. We've discussed the JJ hanging threads before. Just silly to not have a cohesive message from one writer to the next. I tease those on here who seem bitter about the ST but I get it. I'd rather have more Rogue Ones than sequels. I'm thrilled for The Mandalorian, just from the perspective of it will be something completely new and not Jedi related.

Agree. The continuity between TFA and TLJ reminds me of the early internet tandem writing assignment below.

In-class Assignment for Wednesday

Today we will experiment with a new form called the tandem story. The process is simple. Each person will pair off with the person sitting to his or her immediate right. One of you will then write the first paragraph of a short story. The partner will read the first paragraph and then add another paragraph to the story. The first person will then add a third paragraph, and so on back and forth. Remember to reread what has been written each time in order to keep the story coherent. The story is over when both agree a conclusion has been reached.

At first, Laurie couldn’t decide which kind of tea she wanted. The camomile, which used to be her favorite for lazy evenings at home, now reminded her too much of Carl, who once said, in happier times, that he liked camomile. But she felt she must now, at all costs, keep her mind off Carl. His possessiveness was suffocating, and if she thought about him too much her asthma started acting up again. So camomile was out of the question.

Meanwhile,

Advance Sergeant Carl Harris, leader of the attack squadron now in orbit over Skylon 4, had more important things to think about than the neuroses of an air-headed bimbo named Laurie with whom he had spent one sweaty night over a year ago. “A.S. Harris to Geostation 17,” he said into his transgalactic communicator. “Polar orbit established. No sign of resistance so far…” But before he could sign off a bluish particle beam flashed out of nowhere and blasted a hole through his ship’s cargo bay. The jolt from the direct hit sent him flying out of his seat and across the cockpit.

He bumped his head and died almost immediately, but not before he felt one last pang of regret for psychically brutalizing the one woman who had ever had feelings for him. Soon afterwards, Earth stopped its pointless hostilities towards the peaceful farmers of Skylon 4.“Congress Passes Law Permanently Abolishing War and Space Travel,” Laurie read in her newspaper one morning. The news simultaneously excited her and bored her. She stared out the window, dreaming of her youth — when the days had passed unhurriedly and carefree, with no newspapers to read, no television to distract her from her sense of innocent wonder at all the beautiful things around her. “Why must one lose one’s innocence to become a woman?” she pondered wistfully.

Little did she know, but she has less than 10 seconds to live. Thousands of miles above the city, the Anu’udrian mothership launched the first of its lithium fusion missiles. The dim-witted wimpy peaceniks who pushed the Unilateral Aerospace Disarmament Treaty through Congress had left Earth a defenseless target for the hostile alien empires who were determined to destroy the human race. Within two hours after the passage of the treaty the Anu’udrian ships were on course for Earth, carrying enough firepower to pulverize the entire planet. With no one to stop them they swiftly initiated their diabolical plan. The lithium fusion missile entered the atmosphere unimpeded. The President, in his top-secret mobile submarine headquarters on the ocean floor off the coast of Guam, felt the inconceivably massive explosion which vaporized Laurie and 85 million other Americans. The President slammed his fist on the conference table. “We can’t allow this! I’m going to veto that treaty! Let’s blow ’em out of the sky!”

This is absurd. I refuse to continue this mockery of literature. My writing partner is a violent, chauvinistic, semi-literate adolescent.

Yeah? Well, you’re a self-centered tedious neurotic whose attempts at writing are the literary equivalent of Valium.

You total $*&.

Stupid %&#$!.

In all reality, Kathleen Kennedy should be gored just for letting this get out from underneath her, regardless of the fact that she should’ve been hung for allowing Rian Johnson to perform abortion on a $20bn franchise JJ Abrams to throw together a fan service movie that destroys the happy ending of IV, while not providing a roadmap for 8 and 9.

Fixed.

[redundant take] Rogue One felt like OT in style and content. It was very good. Solo had good and questionable content, but was enjoyable. It definitely suffered from fan rage over Rian Johnson’s shit pile, coming out only 6 months after it, and not being a main “Episode”. Solo was better than AOTC and TLJ.

Is Rebels available to stream anywhere? I can get season 4 on YTTV but I don’t see the other seasons on Netflix or Prime. I guess I’ll have to wait for D+

Correct.

You'll have to wait a week or so for Disney+.  Should be worth it just for The Mandalorian.  And Rebels is fucking awesome if you haven't seen it.

Theres two things I love about this thread

1.  It will always be better than the fucking movie.

2.  The comment I made about drew fucking an ewok 10 years ago has become Shaggy/Surly cannon.

Lies, damned lies.  You're the one in love with Ewoks.  That's the main reason I have that movie lower than most.

quick aside, how is Resistance compared to Rebels? honestly my list of shows to watch has been growing faster than my list of shows I've watched for awhile now.

It's not as good so far.  Considering there's only going to be 2 seasons of Resistance, it probably won't get close to as good.  Like with Clone Wars and Rebels there are some clunkers, and silly episodes...but when it stays in narrative and follows the same line as the movies that are happening at the same time, it can be really good(the season finale was pretty well done IMO.)

Rebels is just so darn good though.

Or Hamill's being his normal troll self on Twitter.

or hamill is being honest with his troll job.

Hamill’s tweet about skipping Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in theaters comes shortly after rumors indicated there were multiple versions of the film created following terrible test screenings.

In fact, according to these rumors the test screenings were so bad on the original cut of the film that Disney CEO Bob Iger personally stepped in, in order to try and right the ship of Star Wars. And while his test screening fared better than the previous film, it was still met with rather lukewarm scores.

A third version of the film would be created with Disney bringing in George Lucas to create a “secret Skywalker.” This version was met with much better scores. It’s unclear which version Disney will go with, but the source of the rumor indicates Disney will more than likely go with George Lucas’ version of the film.

Yeah, you're basing all this on stupid rumors from shady sources but go right ahead. Hamill was joking with the guy but if you think Hamill is actively telling people to stay home and not see the movie then okay.

i forgot whom i was arguing with. you liked and fanboyishly defended the last jedi. go on with your fanboy self.

Ha ha. Okay. Hopefully the movie sucks just like you hope it will. I mean no other reputable site is saying anything about 3 edits but okay.

To Kermit: reshoots happen and with JJ there's always extra scenes and things he cuts out. The entire reason Leia is in this film is due to extra footage he shot from TFA. Outside of some YouTube turd, I don't see anyone else running with this. Similar to how Kathleen Kennedy was fired last year yet she's still there to torment them.
