The movie you just watched

Recommended Posts

I watched The Edge of 17 this weekend. Despite all of the teenage angst it was a good movie. I do not look forward to my daughter's teenage years.

Watched Downsizing this past weekend and boy was it awful. Such a clever concept, too bad they didn’t focus on the plot.

I saw Battle of the Sexes this weekend.  Damn good movie.  About half of it was a lesbian love story. But there were no boobs so I can't give it 3 thumbs up.  Emma Stone was good but Steve carell was spot on as Bobby Riggs and he stole the movie.  Yeah I'm just old enough to remember  Riggs. Interestingly they used the real Howard Cosell. I mean Carell and Stone did admiralble jobs of portraying their characters, but nobody could ever pull off Cosell except Cosell. So good choice. I have a thing for Sarah Silverman so I was happy to see her in the movie. Surprisingly she played a self professed Jew pretty well.

Overall the movie did a great job of telling the story from that time period and making it resonate with today's issue of equal pay for female athletes. Think US women's soccer,  or just recently when Martina Navratilova found out she was making less than John McEnroe for.commentating.

The only flaw other than no nudity was actually pretty glaring and it went the heart of the mythic quality of the event.  The problem with myths is of course the truth, the humdrum reality.  I've often said there will never be a new religion now that we have cell phones. Just imagine a myth maker saying that Mohammed had ascended into the sky on his horse, only to have some smartass say, "No he didnt; he had a heart attack and fell off. I've already snap chatted it. " Here's the reality of that match: Riggs threw it. He had to pay off Santo Traffiante and Carlos Marcello, two of the biggest names in mafia history. ESPN had reported this in 2013.  And the movie portrayed Riggs as an out of control gambler and hustler who was willing to bet on anything. So why did the makers of this movie gloss over this? The answer is obvious. They didn't want the truth. They wanted myth. Oh and the myth of that lesbian love storry soundracked to "Crimson and Clover"? It ended in real life as do most relationships: in litigation.

The reality was that the match  was a 1970s circus, like Evel Knievel, addressing important social in cartoon fashion with Howard Cosell as the carnival Barker. It was a show.  Billie Jean King became a heroine.  But Bobby took the money ran.  The movie was good myth, though.

Took my boys to see Pacific Rim 2 on Friday.  First half was decent, but the second half was terrible.  And this is coming from someone who really liked the first one.

Then watched The House on Saturday night.  Thought it was funny as shit and it definitely exceeded expectations.

"Come on, Bennett, throw away that chicken-shit gun. You don't just want to pull a trigger. Put the knife in me and look me in the eye and see what's going on in there when you turn it."

Saw Darkest Hour on the plane.  Amazing.  Aside from Oldman's epic performace, the camera moves and lighting in it were superb from the first shot.  Really well done from all fronts.

Finished up the flight with Casino before I landed.  Sharon Stone...what a bitch.

Took the hag to see Game Night. It was enjoyable.

Although Jason Bateman plays pretty much the same character in every movie he's in.

Saw A Wrinkle in Time today.  I read the book when I was a kid although I don’t remember anything. Son read the book.  Daughter loves all 5 of the books and has been begging.

Best way to put it is the slogan should have been “See it with your family. . .on acid.”

Such a weird fucking movie.  ABC after school special mixed with malarial fever dream.  Not too big of a spoiler but as an example - Reese Witherspoon turns into a giant flying leaf.

The Last Boy Scout came on HBO the other. Solid 90s movie.

I watched it last night. Been a long time. I forgot how much I liked Bruce Willis' character and his great one-liners.

All The Money In The World - Very well done.  Recommend.

Seven - Weird hearing Spacey call the one guy not only a drug dealer but a pederast.

Just viewed “McLaren” on Starz, a documentary film about the life of Bruce McLaren. Yes, that McLaren. I knew nothing of his story and found this engrossing. Very, very well done and highly recommended for gearheads and motoring enthusiasts.

Any thoughts on 12 Strong, want to watch this weekend.

I thought it was meh...  I would much rather watch something from the Western thread.  Just my opinion.

First time for Boondock Saints. Willem Dafoe was "fabulous" and didn't realize that was Norman Reedus until I went to IMDB.

So am I supposed to think that Da shot Rocco's finger off so he would be ineffectual in the gun battle because he wasn't in on the family relationship?

The Abyss - I was wanting to watch Sci-fi/Underwater.  If foot the bill.  At one time it was my favorite move.  It didn't hold up at all.

12 Strong - Sucked

Th Commuter - Sucked.  I just re watched a lot of Liam, but this is one of his worst.

Ready Player One - Like others stated.  It was good for what it was, but the book was so much more.

All The Money in The World - I love based on true stories and read up on the family...

Mollys Game - I liked it alot, but I really dig heist/whatever movies

My 3 favorite movies of last year were probably 3 Billboards, I, Tonya,  Get Out, and Wonder, SO 4.
