A very bad racket, I'm all for their asses being busted.  And, everyone has a strong cheater detection circuit thus broad interest in this story.

But, a few dozen people exchanging places within the elite pipeline strikes me as a bit of a diversion.  As bad as this was, solving it will not make a dent on the overall society.  Making a broadly better educated population will have an enormous benefit.

won't make a dent in overall society?  we're not saving the world.  we're throwing crooks in jail.

CDC was supposed to be traveling up to KC today with the basketball team and thinking about how to decide on the fate of Shaka Smart after the season ends.

Meanwhile, the tennis coach is like: hold my beer

Are recorded telephone calls where you admit to the whole scheme bad?  Because they seem bad.

. . . . I was calling you- I'm in Boston right now.

Ok.

But I was calling you, because I have a kid for potentially next year. He's a
2-3 star, so obviously he's not at the level of you guys.

Yeah.

And I was hoping that maybe we could, kinda, do what we did last time.
I'm not sure exactly what we actually did, but whatever that is, ifwe could
do something like that, that would be fabulous. Do you remember what we
did?

Yeah, I mean I signed him to "books."

Yeah. Ok.

And I got him in the school, you know, and then he -- then he :withdrew
from the team. I mean, does this kid wanna be on the team or does this kid
just wanna get into school?

... I think probably he could go either way.

Ok.

... he doesn't need to be on the team to be frank.

Ok.

But he can be, and he doesn't need the scholarship, so he can withdraw the
scholarship, right? You know, when school starts if you want that.

* * *

So, yeah, I mean, kinda think about what we did financially [for Applicant 1].

Ok.

'Cause I wanna make sure that that works for you as well again.

Yeah. Ok.

I remember that we met and, you know, part -- some of the money was
gonna go towards your -- was it your son's bar mitzvah?

Well, no. Well, we -- I put some money in towards that facility, to be honest
with you.

Ok. Ok.

You sent me a couple checks that I put towards the facility.

Right. Great.

And then I -- and then -- and then you came to Austin that one time.

Right.

So I think -- I think the total amount was, you know, in the nineties area, if
I remember correctly. Yeah.

Got it. Well you -- you let me know whatever that number is.

Ok.

And think about it, and--

Ok. Let me see what I can do. It's a little -- I gotta -- it's a little tight on
because -- ,you know, just even these book scholarships are ... you know
what I need to do, is just, if you could start with ... maybe just email me or
send me the kid's name, and--

Info and all that.

Or maybe -- yeah, yeah.

Let me do that. I'll do that.

So people from Hollywood used their status and privelige to get their kids into the right college? That’s rich. I won’t go cloak.

One of those indicted is "Elisabeth Kimmel" in the District of Nevada.

Jimmy Kimmel grew up in Las Vegas after age 9, but I can't find any reference to a relative named "Elisabeth".  How many unrelated Kimmels could there be in Nevada, though?  Doesn't seem like a common surname.

The kids are in on the conspiracy too.  They should be charged.

It'll be interesting to see if any get bounced if it is determined they were in on it. In some cases they for sure were. I wonder how many were oblivious. But what are you teaching your kids?

What’s nuts is aunt Becky paid 500k for her daughters to get to usc. It’s a private school.

I bet had she spoken to dean of admissions offered a 500k check she could have had them admitted that route via legal “bribery”

2019 coming in strong.  Robert Kraft's rubs and tugs and now Aunt Becky throwing out half million dollar bribes to college admission for her kid.

What federal laws were broken when a kid gets bag money, other than maybe paying the taxes on it?

You mean that isn’t enough?

WGAF on this front of academics?  These applicants are hardly the only qualified students who didn’t get into a prestigious university for some reason or another.

I just find it very fucking peculiar where we as a society draw the line... or move it.

At the press conference this morning, a lady from the IRS spoke. So yes, I’m sure some tax issue is involved.

It doesn't seem that hard to understand to me.  In one, an admin makes a decision that the school is better off with a $1MM donation to pay down whatever debt and a borderline applicant.  In the other, the Tennis Coach pockets a decent downpayment on a house by lying to the rest of the school.

Edit: never mind.  thought you were talking about the donor admittees.  I see you're talking about the atholeets.

Apparently the Texas tennis coach makes about $232k salary

This scheme was almost 40% of his base salary that he pocketed.

Not a bad side hustle.

The only way A&M makes that list is if somebody got caught paying 100K to ensure their kid didnt get accepted.

cool that UT was included in these elite places.  Notice A&M/OU are not on the list!  Hook'em!!!

It is some pretty good marketing.

DMN saying elite:

Charging documents saying "highly selective" and "top tennis team"

Quote

U-Texas is a highly selective public university located in Austin, Texas. The UTexas
men's tennis team competes at the Division I level of the National Collegiate Athletic
Association ("NCAA"), and is consistently ranked as one of the top tennis teams in the nation.

Everyone listing us beside Yale and Stanford

This lady reminding everyone we are rich.

I applaud our marketing group's outside the box thinking.

One of the cooperating witnesses, who has pled guilty, was the Director of College Entrance Exam Preparation at IMG Academy.
