Tankers Afire in Gulf of Oman

The whole thing is just nuts.  Iran is the last country that wants a shooting war with the US.  Israel would be more subtle.
This feels like the Saudis - it's about as clumsy as kidnapping a journalist, cutting him up in an embassy, and sending the remains out in diplomatic pouches.

Like that would ever happen.

Latest news has them being placed on the ships with drones.  Crews claimed to have seen "flying objects" just before explosions.

That sounds even more ginned up.   My brother-in-law has a couple of drones that he uses for photography/surveying stuff - they use a fancy camera (fancy being a DSLR), and it takes something like a 25 pound drone to carry a 4 or 5 pound DSLR.  And they are still pretty tight on the range.

I would imagine a drone capable of carrying a limpet mine would be Pretty Fucking Big.

Yutaka Katada, chief executive of the Japanese company operating the ship called Kokuka Courageous, one of two vessels attacked near the Strait of Hormuzon Thursday, said the damage could not have been caused by mines or torpedos that are shot underwater, since the damage was reportedly above the ship’s waterline.

If this is some sort of a false flag it isn't intended to start a shooting war....it's intent is to further isolate Iran form the rest of humanity.

And yes.....if it is it's pretty clumsy

Even though I agree with alot of whats been said it’s probably time to move this thread to CR.

Possibly but that’s like having a conversation in the Living Room and suggesting everyone go sit in the septic tank.

We have never used a false flag of attack to engage in a war. Well, except the Gulf of Tonkin and Vietnam but most Americans who remember that are dead. So carry on Mr. Bolton!

Don't forget war against Iraq

Putting aside that it’s the US reporting this, why do this:

He said that the placement of the mines above the Japanese tanker’s water line, however, suggested that the intention was not to sink the vessel.

That part of the world, with those actors, there’s not a whole lot of difference between punching somebody in the face and giving them a black eye, and punching somebody in the face, knocking out teeth, breaking their nose and giving them a concussion.   It’s n act of war.

Oh, and as the article mentions, or one of the others, Iran has sold/exported these for a while.
